It really is a shame that so many old lines have disappeared. The government could really do with expanding the railway network. I think it was a mistake going ahead with HS2; the money going to that should really have been spent on building/re-instating/upgrading branch lines etc.

@@westcountryexplorer Yes, I think we did! I think it may have been a lockdown thing! Mine was in early February of 2021, when I was living in South Devon. I live in Gloucestershire now, but, like you, I try and cover as much of the wider Westcountry that I can. I do walks, history, canals, railways, coast, beaches, etc.

I wish they could reinstate these old railway lines instead of building brand new ones. Apologies if I've said this before. 🙄 Would be brilliant to catch a train from Bournemouth to Bath without faffing about changing trains and lines.

I did go back and set the bird free; I couldn't let it stay trapped in there.
It was very interesting, walking along where trains used to run

Question: What society do we live in when we leave a distressed animal trapped? My conscience, Christian or otherwise would not have allowed me to witness this and walk on by. No wild bird deserves to be trapped in its own environment. WE, MAN, HUMANITY are raping the countryside for development, destroying many natural habits of animals and birds, removing them from their homes. Not only would I have released the bird, I'd have jumped on the cage. Being human means exhibiting compassion towards others.

On my way back I did stop and manage to release it. Does that make up for the fact I initially walked by? Not really. I do sometimes have a 'Don't get involved' attitude; that's an attitude I need to keep challenging. It's not a good attitude.
In answer to your question; it's not a brilliant society that leaves distressed animals trapped. Humanity can be (And is being.) cruel and insensitive to nature in many ways.
