Verwood to Bornemouth took 20 minutes at most in 1880.

Another great video, and a local one for me. Rumour has is that occasionally squaddies got off the train at Alderholt Station asking for directions to the barracks, so it's alleged that it was renamed to Daggons Road Station to avoid some confusion with Aldershot.
My great grand-aunt ran the Station Hotel in Verwood (now The Albion) at the time of WW1. My grandmother also worked there and rumour has it that she met my grandfather, who was stationed at Blandford, when he used to march his troops past the pub
As a lifelong railway enthusiast I find these explorations of yours fascinating ,particularly when they cover lines that I either travelled on or was aware of e.g. the S & D, the Waverley route plus others. I left the U.K in 1973 dismayed at the destruction of the railways & other things for South Africa which still had a highly functioning predominantly steam loco. worked system only to see the same pattern repeated here from the late 1980’s onward. Great video Paul & Rebecca, I know the line (what's left of it anyway) quite well and can give you a little more information on both the Railway Hotel in Fordingbridge, and the station at Breamore (actually pronounced Bremmer for accuracy).
I’m from Downton originally, nice to see you back there, currently living between Breamore & Fordingbridge stations you visited, would have been great to bump into you 2 if I’d known you were in the area, been binge watching your back catalogue of videos for a fair while now, thanks again, a few bits I don’t know about the history of the line in this one.

@@pwhitewick well as you started this one at Verwood, you need to start the Castleman at Ringwood, onto West Moors, Wimborne, Broadstone and Hamworthy.
Your videos help me, not only to know better about some of the dismantled railways that I have visited, you two bring a sense of me getting away from the stress humdrum of life for those valuable 15 minutes or so, to which I heartily thank you. Again a lovely video.

I have family members that live in Verwood near the Albion. I must take a look at that at some point!
My Mother's family is from Breamore, there's a whole lot of them in the graveyard and on the war memorials, and the locals pronounce it Bremmer!
People from Uttoxeter pronounce it "Utchutta"
People from Wilnecote pronounce it "Wincut"
People from Leicester pronounce it "less-tar"
and so on and so on.....

As a kid I helped restore Four Marks Station on the Watercress Line
Ah, "my" local railway, the Salisbury & Dorset Junc Rly! Opened 1866, closed 1964, surviving for only 98 years. At its southernmost point it had a junction with Castleman's Southampton & Dorchester Rly at West Moors, the northern end joined the Salisbury to Southampton Rly, trains then running on those metals to terminate at Salisbury station in a bay. Earlier in the mid-1840s a scheme to link the Dorset coast with Bristol and the Midlands was mooted. The first was the Salisbury & Dorsetshire Railway, announced in 1844 but never built. The Salisbury & Dorset Junc Rly (built 1866) was sadly just the stump of this first ambitious railway and linking the two LSWR main routes. A little story, the elderly couple still living, after the lines closure, at Daggons Road station (Alderholt), the lady used to catch the train to Fordingbridge of an evening to buy fish & chips then returning on the last train; she was often the only person on it! All the gas lamps were shut off after the last train had left but on a very rough night they would blow out and the station would be in darkness. Daggons Road stn was built after the opening of the railway, some 10 years later. By the way chaps - Breamore, a slightly odd name, which, by the locals (who know) is pronounced "Bremmer" - so there we are, mispronounce it at your peril.

I remember when the line was in use, and watched it get torn up. I use to live in Alderholt, was 6 years old when it closed
The Railway Hotel at Fordingbridge has bedrooms named, and decorated, in the style of famous express trains such as Orient Express, etc. And the beer is good.

How funny, i live in Salisbury, have road on my bike down that path, accessing via Oddstock. Now it makes sense what it was :-)
Really enjoyed this one. When I was a nipper [I'm old now], our family got the train from Andover to Weymouth [for a very wet week in a little caravan] and here's the itinerary. Andover>Salisbury / Salisbury>Poole / Poole>Weymouth. Salisbury>Poole can only be the route you are featuring today.

Have you found any remains of the tunnel between Alderbury and Downton? I believe it was used for landfill over 40 years ago.
Great little video, I know your first stop very well, the Albion pub at Verwood, with the old bridge next to it, some years ago, we often stayed at the nearby campsite, just a few yards to the west, you might even have walked by it!
Oh no! You missed the wonderful bridge just a bit further north!! If you’re local then it is worth going back to see it!

A bit of a coincidence, since it mentioned an historic train crash at a junction in the Salisbury area, in a similar situation where one train hits the side of another one.
@@NOWThatsRichyNow they are blaming it on low adhesion and the train skidding. Leaves on the line?- I bet the Downton line had its trees kept pruned to stop that sort of thing.

Boston has a dirt rail trail called reformatory branch that runs between Boston and Concord on former B&M RR. It is on MBTA oldest commuter system in USA
Great video. My childhood (90's) was spent in Moot Lane, Downton. I grew up with stories of the line from elderly neighbours. It had always captivated my imagination and in adulthood researched it heavily. In fact the reason I found your channel was the old Tunnel video. Thank you for the great content and hard work. The line closed 57 years ago, so would have been buried a bit more recently than 80 years ago 👍🏼

Exploring old railways is a hobby of mine. The Didcot to Newbury is an interesting old railway to explore.
I was born in Fordingbridge less than a year after the station closed. I remember the A338 Salisbury road crossing over the railway at Burgate but there’s no trace of the bridge or even the track bed there now.
Oh and Breamore is pronounced Bremmer, like the impressionist Rory Bremner without the N.
And a sad coincidence that you released this video, describing these rail accidents, on the very day of the Salisbury rail crash in the Fisherton Tunnel, beneath St Marks.
I must have driven under at least one of those road bridges on holidays etc to the west country in pre motorway days or exploring the area generally. fordingbridge and verwood could find a rail connection useful, especially those housing estates that have been built

Hi. Nice to find out that you are locals. There are disused sidings that used to serve the chalk? pits at Wilton Road Salisbury. The Royal Train parked there overnight when the Queen visited a few years back.
Hi you two I loved this vid very well filmed (By two lovely presenters) and very informative as always. Id love you two to come to Chesterfield and do what's left of the old GCR Chesterfield loop as there is loads of it and nearly (not all) of it and it's walkable as far as Rother Valley country park. I would love to do the walk as a guest.

Loved this! Yes 'brem' not 'breem'. Railway Hotel Fordingbridge is recently restored to it's original by a local businessman. Opposite F/B station, houses have been built over where the track was though beyond them is a section of path and a bridge. This section was quite a cutting and has been filled in - you can see the level difference either side of the main drag. F/B station building and the cutting was still there when I moved to the area mid 70s. I walked the section downton-alderbury some decades ago - have photos though don't suppose its changed much.
Great Video which brings back a lot of memories. I lived in Downton in the 70's and I remember walking through the Downton Tunnel with my mates it may have only been 90yds but it seemed to take ages. In those days the station at Downton was still there. oh and I also lived in Breamore which is actually pronounced Bremmer.
Another great video. On your walks I often wonder how many miles you travel. This one looked quite lengthy.
