    A note on food storage: If you not sure what should be stored where (fridge vs. pantry, etc.) just look at your local grocery store for guidance! Grocery stores have to store tons of fresh produce as efficiently as possible; they know what will rot when refrigerated and what will thrive

    Thredup is great and all, but I'm a little annoyed that they dont have a men's section, only women's and children's clothes. It feels a little exclusive.
    There are men in this movement that want to have access to second hand clothes too. And there are gender non conforming people that want to buy less "feminine" clothes online as well.

      I think it's that way just because they don't get enough men clothes sent to them. Men from experience they use their clothes until they die out. That's my guess it's that way.

      Actually, you should try looking into Plato's Closet. My local store doesn't have online shopping, but there's another a little further away that does still offer online. They're a franchise, so that's very much going to depend on what your local one does, but they should have a men's section. Both of the ones I mentioned do. If your local one doesn't offer online then I suppose it might be an option whenever we get to the other side of the pandemic.

    Oooooh girl you're in for a treat! :) I used to hate tomatoes until I found out that you're not supposed to refrigerate them because that takes away their flavor. Now I eat tomatoes raw as a snack all the time because they retain all their delicious flavor, especially when you grow them yourself (or your generous neighbor grows them in my case lol)

  • @knz730
    @knz730 4 ปีที่แล้ว +65

    Not only can you leave tomatoes out of the fridge, you should never refrigerate tomatoes! The cold causes a conversion of sugars that changes their flavour forever, even if you later pull them out of the fridge. If you’ve got tomatoes going bad, cook them down and freeze them as a “sauce” of just tomatoes that you can use in place of canned tomatoes.

    • @mirelala25
      @mirelala25 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I found in an article that it really just depends on the stage that the life cycle of the tomato is in. I think this is really just a preference for flavor. If the tomato is not yet ripe, it can be left out until ripe, then put into the refrigerator to help slow down the rotting process and help retain some of the tomato's ripe qualities for longer until you decide to eat them. Unless you bought them unripe, it's not always best to leave them out unless you are going to eat them soon. Again, it's all based on the kind of tomatoes you buy, and whether or not you care about retaining it's flavor.

    My understanding of tomato storage is that storing them outside of the fridge helps prevent "mealiness" in terms of the texture. I have experimented with storing tomatoes both ways and have found they last longer in the fridge.

    Im sorry I keep commenting this, but Maddison is literally just like my husband. He made me carry around a mug from our house to take to a restaurant, because of the virus they serve drinks in styrofoam cups. Oooo I didn't know what the point of the sliding knobs on my fridge drawers meant either! I've noticed recently how some produce needs humidity more than others and now I have to figure out exactly which ones and pick drawers for them! On the veggie bags, a friend has one she keeps baby greens and herbs in and it's basically a Terry cloth bag. I imagine you could DIY your own from an old towel or even a thrifted sweatshirt or sweatpants!

    • @elliewinthrop5087
      @elliewinthrop5087 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      A good rule of thumb is "rot low, wilt high." If the stuff in the drawer is leafy and likely to wilt, slide it to the higher side. If it's more likely to get squishy and then rot, slide the knob to the lower side.

  • @kirstnmichelle
    @kirstnmichelle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Along with tomato's - avacados too (people around here keep their avacados in the fridge too) the best rule of thumb- if it's not cold in the store it shouldn't be in the fridge!

    • @mary.w.
      @mary.w. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      In America it is normal to shop monthly. When I lived in Germany, I remember shopping every 3 or so days. This is why I think there is such a difference in fridge size. Also, the size of houses could also contribute as we have too big of houses and Europe tends to have smaller, cozy homes.

      Same here! Like I could fit in her fridge. My fiancé and his family lived in Seattle for a while and they didn’t know what to do with such a big fridge. I think in Europe is more common to shop weekly, since we don’t have those huge houses and everything in general is smaller a🙆🏻‍♀️

      @thatjillgirl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As others are saying, whenever I've been in Europe, I've gotten the impression that most Europeans buy groceries a lot more frequently. Americans tend to favor grocery shopping less often and just having more food storage space. At my peak, I was grocery shopping only once a month (I hate grocery shopping and try hard to not have to do it often). Needed plenty of room to keep things in order to make that possible.

    I remember learning about the tomato thing a few years back. Basically. We should be taking notes to how the produce section in the stores are laid out. All the fruits and veggies that are in the middle of the produce sections should be left out on counters or in baskets or in a cool, dry place. (Unless they’re starting to over ripen then I toss them in the fridge or freezer to help it last a bit longer) and then all the food in the crisper sections should go in the fridge. But for some reason we all like to just toss everything into the fridge then wonder why things to bad or lose flavor or just don’t fit. 😂

    💓apple sauce only works as an egg substitute when it’s used for moisture for something that needs less structure like a cake or bread. but for cookies or crusts you would still need a binder or levain to assist the baking powder/soda. you can do this by adding more baking powder, adding baking soda, or using 1 tbls cornstarch + 3 tbls water for every egg! thats my favorite sub for every recipe. hope this helps someone!💓

    When you mentioned Raid hours I had to pause the video and go tell my boyfriend I was so excited! Playing Pokemon go, watching your videos and trying to go eco-friendly is pretty much all I do during quarantine so to see that you enjoy Pokemon too just makes me feel that much closer to you! How fun!

    I've been keeping my greens in a damp hand towel for a couple of years now. Great tip! Also, celery and carrots stay crispy longer if you store them in water. That's been a game changer!

    I haven't pulled the trigger on buying on thred up. I am a cheap af person so I usually buy clothes for a quarter at yard sales or for a few dollars at a thrift store, so even though thred up offers a great discount, I am saving up for it. Plus we shouldn't be yard saleing or thrifting in store right now and that kills me 😢😢

    I really appreciate the ThredUP tips. I have been trying to use it but I really struggle to online shop because my body portions are all over the place and every company has different measurements and sizing for women (makes no sense) but I would love to see an entire ThredUP tutorial video! I’ll keep giving it a shot. Love the premise and everything you get looks amazing on you! Love your style. :)

    I remember when I visited San Antonio and the weather was insane!
    But I love everything there even if I hadn't be able to adapt myself to the weather 😅.

      A lot of my fam lives down San Antonio it’s hot but the humidity is not that bad . I live I. Maryland and the humidity is so bad up here that 90 degrees feels worse then San Antonio’s 100 degrees . I have family in Monterrey , Mexico and they said America felt hotter then Mexico

    Another great way to store your herbs is trimming a little off the bottom and placing them in a cup of water. Each time you use some, it’s best to trim a little off the bottom and put fresh water in the cup. I started doing this and it helps herbs last a couple weeks

I'd love to see a vlog of cleaning the coils. I have never done it so it'd be cool to see a demonstration.
