    I hope you liked this video! These are what I would consider *big tips* as opposed to the smaller more detailed tips I generally give so it's a bit of a different video for me. Please give it a thumbs up if it was helpful or send it to a friend 💕 ALSO, leave any video requests you have below!

      okay SO. just two weeks ago i was the person who had work hair ties, home hair ties, and car hair ties. i typically buy a pack of 20 hair ties maybe... 3 or 4 times a year. not the WORST (considering my friends' habits) but its definitely not good. i am typically a bit of a germophobe but because of one of your recent videos where you said that you picked a hairtie up off the ground, disinfected it and reused it for over a year. i decided to try and reduce! ive made it a sort of challenge but im super happy to say for an entire week i have not reached into my hairtie drawer to get a new one and i have just kept the same one and washed it every time i've washed my hair. oddly, this has really worked for me! just wanted to share some good news and say that this really only occurred because i saw your recent video! so thank you! i know its small now, but i hope to make larger changes in the future!

    "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. " It's amazing how many resources, especially money, are saved by following this little rhyme. I've also made it a point to train my mind to look at something I'm throwing out and ask myself if I have another use for it. A lot of the time I do but sometimes I just don't.

    I actually double-dip with my climate offsets! I pay Go Climate Neutral for a full offset every month, but then I also pay Tree-Nation $11 every month to plant enough trees to absorb my calculated output. Thanks for the video!

      @@wiktoriakusak3280 I get emails from them every month about what species got planted, where they were planted, and what projects they were planted with. I can log in and see a dashboard of all my trees planted since the start of my membership. Searching "tree nation scam" doesn't turn up anything on Ecosia.

    This is a baby step, but buying used stuff has been a big one for me - and it's also really accessible since it's cheaper than buying new clothes/furniture/whatever - sometimes a LOT cheaper.

    Buying quality wardrobe staples instead of trendy fast fashion clothes has been the biggest step for me in becoming a more conscious human.
    It really makes me think before I purchase an item, because each piece is now an investment.

    • @karolynanderson2033
      @karolynanderson2033 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gabbybennett36 I'm so sorry I missed this initially! I find it helpful to research the website or brand if I'm not familiar with it... even something as simple as checking the brand on GoodOnYou or simply Googling "is BLANK sustainable/ethical?".
      Most legit brands will have an "About Us" or "Our Story" tab on their website. If they're using ethical and sustainable methods of production, chances are good they'll mention that there!

    i used to buy a lot of stuff (esp. makeup and stuff like that), but a while ago i set myself the rule that i can only buy something new if i've used up the older products and because of that i've been buying a lot fewer things - also i rebuy products that i've used and liked before instead of trying out new stuff all the time, because as you said, if you love something you own, you will want to reuse it all the time :)

    One thing that changed my life forever is making my own soap with coconut oil. I use it in the shower as a body soap and as a shampoo bar, I know exactly what ingredients are in it, it has no smell and it makes me more conscientious about how long each bar lasts. Plus, my skin and my hair now look AMAZING!

    Keeping track of how long you have had certain things is such a smart idea! Never thought of it like that before.
    I've never been interested in clothes/fashion so I've always bought cheaper stuff just because I don't care but I've come to realise quality over quantity is sooo important and it makes me appreciate the more expensive things I buy more. Less really IS more, who knew ;)

    I've found waiting before I buy stuff has been one of my most life-changing habits. You mentioned in a few of your videos that you have an instagram account for things you want - since then I made an album on my phone where if I want to buy something I take a screenshot and store it there, then when I get paid I look at that album and see if I really do still want that thing. Having that distance helps so much with the spur of the moment "I want it right now" feeling and has honestly stopped me buying so many clothes!

    I've been listening to The Story of Stuff, and I'm really enjoying it. I am pleasantly surprised at how familiar the content is. I went to school for socio-cultural anthropology, and I covered the majority of the case studies mentioned in this book through my coursework. It's crazy how probably 10 grand worth of courses was condensed into this one book! Calling the history of the west taking advantage of the global south through capitalism The Story of Stuff...is such a concise (and painfully impossible to ignore) way of putting it.

    Love your channel so, so much but I have a request/critique. The last couple videos you've been using a loud sound in your editing to cut to clips from past videos. I have a hearing condition and that loud tone causes legit pain and ringing. Could you please pick a softer tone or dramatically lower the volume? Normally on TH-cam the loud shifts are from intros and such so I can predict it and mute strategically. These don't. I really don't want to have to watch you on mute with captions or stop watching. I hope I haven't offended you as I love your message and your channel. Also, your blog is fantastic and you should totally promote it more : )

    calculating cost per wear/use is such a good habit goal. I struggled to buy the expensive full priced baby carrier when my first was born I bought structured one when I was pregnant because I was living with my sister who hada two year old and had got rid of the carrier which was expensive but not ergonomical made kid feel heavier not lighter but I had wore a baby before I knew about ergos all my friends had them I knew it was worth getting and I had got it at a huge once a year half off an item that never goes on sale and by the fallowing year I would already need to have one so I got it super early. but it was hard to justify buying another carrier for only a few weeks or months so I went cheap it was safe of course but it wasn't well fitting it didn't work and my first baby wouldn't let me put her down the second I picked her up she was happy this was at less than a week no trickery no spoiling she just needed to be vertical and cuddleded all day. I ended up getting the other most popular brand one that I knew I could trust and it really wasn't that much money. I was thinking about days and weeks and months and it seemed so short and never considered hours per day. I never considered factoring in that I was wearing it three and four hours a day for 2 to 3 months times 2 kids with the moby wrap $40 instead of $24 and then multiple years for the ergo. $70 on sale normally $120+ used almost daily for three years before having to replace. so maybe 1,000 days. 2 cents an hour the other one the other likely having close to a ten cent per hour I have fewer pairs of shoes than clothes to wear I haven't been tracking accuratly but buying quality shoes you can' get a lot of cost per wear but fashion dress shoes how often can you wear that shoe. creating somewhat of a capsule or a dress code or uniform or color pallet paramats has helped me. everything should mostly go with everything. and my shoe would go with almost everything I owned I like chocoas I feel I can wear them with anything and for years I stuck with black and black and dark grey became my nutruals then I decided since Imoved to an area wear it is really hot in the summer and also since I am not as fearful of light colors now that i have a more saustainable more reliable period products I changed what color of chocoas I get but still try to think what goes witheverything. when I have to get closed toe shoes I get them second hand

      Every few years is still way better than what most people do! I myself tend to buy at least a few items *every* year. I definitely make them last (I have some clothing items that are over ten years old). But buying thing once every few years is really not bad at all, and probably better than what I'm doing.

    HUGE FAVOR: what were those sneakers called that you tested and loved?! You showed it in this video, I remember you saying they're so soft you don't have to wear socks. For the life of me I can't remember what video you talked about it in and I want to order a pair. I'm a nurse so I'm still working right now, and my feet are killing me!! Thank you in advance.
    Second: Something I started doing was shopping with the "Dollar Method" (Not sure if this is an actual thing, just something I do) for me, each use/wear is $1. Example, there's a super cute dress I want, I think its perfect but its $50. Would I wear it 50 times ($1 each wear). If I can't see myself doing it, I won't buy it!! This has helped me save so much money & encourages me to shop second hand to find something I want/need for a lower cost!

    • @gettintherejanice6216
      @gettintherejanice6216 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      that is very simular to calculating cost per wear. just backwards. the only problem I see with that is fast fashion finding a cheap something for $8 fast fashion and saying oh I woulld wear that 8 times. but maybe not there are so many pop up holiday fashion things that I see and think how many times could a person even wear that how many days of the year can the person wear that holiday thing really some things I can't imagine wearing more than 3 times and that is sad. I like 40 to 50 wears out of a second hand item meaning roughly weekly for a year or 2 years for seasonal. I rearily make it that far with everything but that is the goal.

    I drink wine fairly regularly. This means we have a lot of glass wine bottles leaving the house and into the recycling bin. Is there a more sustainable way to handle this? I've googled "how to reuse wine bottles" and all I seem to find are for decorative purposes. I dont know that I want my whole house covered in wine bottles for decoration.....family may send me to meetings. Haha. I dont know that there are refillable options in the US.....thoughts?

    I’m just starting my zero-ish low waste journey, and I’d love a video on how to be more sustainable when recycling isn’t a priority where you live. My city stopped recycling last year for some reason (contractor issues?) which is dumb. I was going to take my plastic and paper to Target, but they have removed their bins for the coronavirus. I just now found out a about TerraCycle and some of those boxes cost so much money for my household. However, I see that TerraCycle does partner with some brands so that you don’t have to pay for packaging. Would it be the worst thing if I still used plastic, say, from Tom’s of Maine, because they take things back for free? I also have been using Josie Maran products for quite sometime, and will continue to because she participates in TerraCycle.
    TL;DR-What options are there for people in rural cities (lol yes) with little to no recycling resources? Should we support brands who TerraCycle even if they may be using plastic?
    Love your stuff! Thank you for all of your info!

    For me it's cyceling and using public transport in Europe. I cycle everywhere in the city and it's ridiculous how cheap public transport in Vienna is. It costs 1€/day for me to use all public transport in Vienna for 365 days. Frees up so much time to read, or with cyceling do sports and think in 1!

    • @theresalwayssomethingtobui944
      @theresalwayssomethingtobui944 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@juliaa.9870 If you do a single trip its the same price here. For 24hours it's 8,50€. Still worth it rather quickly. The 1€ is just if you have a year round ticket. As student you pay even less during the semester (75€/5 months). In other cities in Austria it is a lot more tough. Vienna is special in this regard. Still, there is a project going on to have a yearly ticket for 365€ for 1 federal state, 700€ for transport in 2 federal states and 1100€ to use transport in 3 federal states (123ticket). So it is getting cheaper.

    The Story of Stuff was an awesome book. It has definitely made me think before buying things, especially clothing and electronics. For example, I need to buy a printer. I know printers are very resource intensive. I am buying the most expensive, heavy duty laser printer I can afford that has great reviews from a brand that can last 10+ years. It is more expensive in the up front, but how many cheap printers do people go through and throw away? I know I have in the past.
