I was completely dumbfounded when I reached the "twist" of this case. Holy God that takes dedication to another level. John was completely mental and manipulative while Mark was really gullible. I hope he learned his lesson after this.
I’ve heard about a case or two where someone hires a hitman to kill him, as in suicide by hitman… one case he went broke and wanted his family to get the insurance money.
@@GenetMJF the hitman was like 10k whereas his life insurance payout was in the hundreds of thousands, close to a million if I remember correctly. When I say broke, I mean that basically he knew that he wasn’t going to continue to be able to afford to take care of his family, even if he was able to scrape together 10k he knew that wasn’t enough to sustain his family for very long and I guess he thought it would be better for them if he spent the remainder of his money on this plot to kiII himself so they could get the insurance payout.
@xbox gamer nope, after the guy was found murdered in his car, the police discovered the real plot when they tracked down the “hitman” who confessed, which voided the policy. I tried finding the case just now, I watched a show on the ID channel about it maybe 5 or so years back, but when I searched all I could find was a very similar case that happened a year ago with a guy from South Carolina arranging his own murder so his son could collect the insurance.

I call solve at 13:42 16:12 kevin knew because mark was on the chat all day ,what he wore, where he was etc ,.. mark didn't know this "possible kevin was ghosting lurking in chat without being seen... or john is actually the catfisher and has played him all along "he's the only one that could have known all the daily onmark if the catfisher wasn't gleaning the info from ghosting. 17:36 abort code 6969 ,.. possible kevin viewed this as a prank ,.. the code allowing him to stop it from actually happening " hmm perhaps his way to end the sick game and he lost connection or couldn't complete the 6969 part so the attempted murder continued? REVEAL yes it was John "I'm guessing marks attack surprised him before he could orchestrate the 69 69 abort lie. lol p.s. I'll take a half credit on this one,.. i was surprised it was actually john but I had listed as a possibility in my process. dayum now I'm 4-1-1
@@MYshamanEYE he literally set the whole thing up he knew at every moment what was gonna happen. As soon as mark asked him to go to the alley he knew what it was. If he didn’t wanna get hurt he would have said the code then. For me the only way your logic would make sense is if he wanted to literally get it down to the last second while mark pulls his knife he says the code and it turns marks world upside down. The whole thing would literally be for that moment and to see the look on marks face bewildered asf.
That is downright some matrix stuff, how just how do INCITE your own murder. This sounds like there was john from another universe trying to kill his past self but was arrested by the future government of trying to end his own life. 😭😭

I've heard of some bizarre cases but I genuinely had no clue where this was going. The situation went from sad to weird to confusing do downright hilarious. Aside from the mental trauma it seems both sides got a slap on the wrist and the judges were like "IDEK man, just stop talking to each other and I swear if you're on chat rooms again..."
Would have loved to have a window into the mind of the judge in this case....people do some strange stuff. After what I have seen done online I'm scared of humanity.
It's more likely because a) they were minors and b) the British justice system is EXTREMELY lenient in comparison to other countries like the US. I live in England and a life sentence here is I think 25 years and you can be let out after about 12 years with good behaviour.
This story kind of reminds me of that detective who would call fast food chains and tell them their pretty teenage employees were being investigated and he needed the managers of that restaurant to detain her and read her rights, which then he would tell them to strip search them for him then he would make them do cavity searches on these girls, and so on and so on. Of course, he wasn't a real detective, he was just a pervert with a power complex making prank calls and getting off on making people sexually assault teenage girls for him. Even got turned into a movie. Not sure if Ballen's ever covered this story, but if you're reading this, Sir, and you haven't then I'd recommend looking into the details for another video. Just look up Donna Jean Summers, Louise Obgorn or Walter Nix. Or look up the movie Compliance. Story's freakin' crazy.
There was the movie and also an episode of Law and Order: SVU that used that as part of the plot of an episode. Robin Williams guest starred as the guy who made the call. I remember when the story was in the news, though. I'd rather lose my job than strip for a manager who says the cop on the phone said to. I probably wouldn't have been as assertive as a teen, though...
@@hprotz6600 I forgot about that episode! Which is odd because Robin Williams' darker roles are so memorable. One Hour Photo gave me chills. Yeah, it's unbelievable this was able to happen. I mean, as a teen, what can you do? The manager wouldn't let you leave if they are thinking police are coming for you, so I get that they probably knew they were in a hopeless situation. What gets me is how did the managers fall for this? What cop would tell people over a phone to do their job for them, with no regards to the girl being read her rights? I mean, it didn't seem odd to them that the cop or any other officer wasn't there in person to arrest her or even show them an ID to confirm? I can be naive but even I know a citizen can't just be strip searched without being read their rights. Maybe the manager was afraid of getting in trouble too. Or perhaps it could've just been a power thing. The "cop" gave them a sense of really being in charge of someone and they took it. That's even more disturbing.
@@chelseabellamy6993I remembered the episode because I recently rewatched it, tbh. And One Hour Photo was amazing and creepy. It's because most people will defer to authority over their own good sense too often. The Milgram Experiment, Stanford Prison Experiment, and Third Wave Experiment all show that. And those are the relatively controlled examples. People in Nazi Germany went along with that to avoid repercussions, same during American slavery and the Civil Rights movement. Especially if you've been conditioned to respect/obey authority or that those in authority have more knowledge than you do, you're likely to go along with things. It doesn't help that lots of people don't know their own rights, so wouldn't know *to* argue against what happened with those teens...The human mind is both amazing and terrifying in what it can be convinced of. (ETA: The guy calling the restaurants wasn't actually a cop, just impersonated one...)

Even though mark was manipulated, I still think it’s weird he got off that easy. He was literally prepared to kill a friend because a random person on the Internet told him to, seems kinda dangerous.
Well yes, but also a child that's been groomed for sex would need to get a sentence in your theory... So no, not really... "John" should've gotten a worse sentence for taking advantage, then coarsing for murder, then attempted murder... Which should've landed him with a good few years behind bars..
Haha what you've failed to see, is unless you've met or video chatted with a person on multiple occasions. Its possible All of them were just 1 stalker lol
Yeah, It’s been years since I have really participated in a chatroom but I grew up in sort of the golden era of dial up and AOL and chatrooms. They were very exciting back in the day and like most kids who were 10 in the year 2000 a big part of adolescence was going online and messing around in chatrooms… It really was the wild west back then. probably around 2003ish we went from dial up to a dedicated connection where I could be online whenever I wanted without disturbing the phone line. I was young and obviously more naive but it does not take a rocket scientist to quickly figure out that people lie in chatrooms and send fake pictures, never assume anyone is who they say they are. I actually ended up getting in quite a bit of trouble for some “hacking” type of shenanigans I was involved in. I kind of joined this collective of other young people interested in hacking and I was sort of known for being pretty good at “social engineering” where you basically trick humans to gain access into things. It’s just another form of hacking… you can spend a weekend trying to crack a password using code and various programs or you could just straight up try to trick the target into giving it to you. So I made this fake AIM Account called Eric Wilmaz AIM - a completely fake name and idk why I remember it damn near 20 years later. I would send a message to the target and also there was a a command to insert these really official looking lines into messages… it was like shift + s or something but it would insert a big bold line in the body of the message. I would make it sound more professional but I would send a message along the lines of hey at 8:47:22 PM we detected a login from your account in Laredo Texas 000.000.0.0 (fake IP address) please confirm you are the correct user. please type your password case exact as you entered it to log in. I swear I am not exaggerating when I say this had like a 40% success rate. I would astounded how well this worked and I will admit I was a little asshole but I also would log into peoples accounts and boot them off, then change their password but I never really did anything malicious… maybe I might send a message to someone on their buddy list and say like haha I stole your friends account… often the owner of the account would message me through an alt screename or a friends account and ask me to please give them their account back and I would proceed to share with them what I changed the password to, give them a little lecture about security and be on my way allowing them to take the account back. I say all that to say that some people (especially kids) were EXTREMELY GULLIBLE especially in the earlier days of the internet… I worked with a guy who shared a story about how a few years ago he thought he was talking to a girl and proceeds to send a dick pic with his face included. This “girl” who was actually some scammer type he was talking too proceeds to blackmail him threatening to send the picture to all his facebook friends… he actually complied with the demands and sent them $250… of course a day later they turn around and demand more money and he ends up refusing the demands and they went and sent this picture to like 50+ facebook connections he had. This happened in 2015 to a guy in his mid 20’s lol.
Can someone explain tho? I don't really understand the ending...So the person who got arrested was the person that got stabbed? Didn't Mark get any jail time for stabbing someone? I'm sooo confused by this story, please help me understand lol
John really should have worn a bullet proof vest that could deflect a knife blade. And when Mark realized he couldn't kill him, John would say "You've completed the test! You weren't supposed to kill me. But Rachel is a double-agent and we set up a trap to catch her. It also confirmed your ability to carry out missions that may require terminating someone." From there, John could keep up the ruse and have Mark go on a multitude of missions.
I don't actually think bullet proof vests could stop knives. I don't know what they're made out of now but from what I remember a knife could stab through. The vest only slows and weakens the impact of the bullet so it doesn't pierce your skin.
@@onewaystaircase they can but the plates are designed to break apart so depending on the force am the knife it may not work but we had some really dumb privates in the army that tried to stab each other so I've seen it work
@@onewaystaircase they work pretty well on knives. even the ones without plates. The design of bulletproof vests is to stop something from penetrating all the way through them, if a bullet cant penetrate all the way through, a knife blade from a stab will also have ALOT of trouble. you would still be hurt some from the force of the stab, but you wouldn't be cut. but there is also such a thing as stab-proof vests.
I guess he just mainly faked the accounts in their "private chat room". Rachel, Kevin and the agent. Everything else would not be possible to execute believable.
I actually fully expected rachel and kevin and janet to all be one person from the beginning, but I didn't know it was all john, that was such a good plot twist
@@zeearts9484 3 months?! WAAAAAY more than that. And Mark shouldn't get any time at all. His only crime was being stupid. John was full out gaslighting the dude. Since the only person he hurt was the guy gaslighting and manipulating him he should have gotten off while John got attempted murder.

What kind of adult is John going to become? Hopefully he's under some sort of psychiatric supervision/monitoring.

"I want to meet up and give you a hug? I'm so sorry your embarrassed" hmm that sounds right coming from someone just "released" from being held hostage...
Court system justice is dumb. It’s more important to find culpability and punish than to actually help the involved parties. In this case one kid got attempted murder charge on his record for wanting to feel loved (I understand he almost killed someone who wanted to die) and the mastermind got off with less than a slap on the wrist. In my opinion this did not deserve any charges on either party but instead years of psychiatric therapy.

Reminds of the time I was moderating a forum, back in the days. There were two members (Mephisto and Faust) who hated each other. They were always looking each other up to throw insults at one another. They were both quite entertaining with their insults: comedy gold. At the beginning. After some time the funny insults became darker, spiraling out of control into actual death threats. So with Faust being the more reasonable one, we moderators decided to ban Mephisto from the forum. Years later Faust - you guessed it - admitted that he and Mephisto were the same person. We had a good laugh about it but I remember that he said something that I found weird at the time. He said that, at one point, when Mephisto was insulting Faust to the bone, it made him/Faust feel angry. That feeling was too weird even for him and that was the reason he started Mephisto to threaten his life, so we had no choice than to ban the latter. Apparently, taking on different personas messes with your brain. At one point they become (almost) real in your head. I believe that's what happened to John.

im 4 and 1 so far
MY SOLVE/ OR FAIL NARRATIVE THOUGHT PROCESS.
6:05 RED FLAG possible catfishing
6:53 more convinced of catfishing ,..ol i don't he a cam line.
8:02 new arrival Kevin is actually the catfishing person?
9:24 convinced kevin is Rachel ,.. trying to lure the boy mark to a place to kill him perhaps.
12:31 kevin returns,.. the give away ,.. he is trying to hard to make a difference in the way the text he writes is written,.. people faking multiple accounts often do this ,.. all capos for 1 identity ,.. all pink in this case ,.. this is so they can keep them organized intheir own mind as much as it is to mislead others.
2 people may type that way but most don't ,.. 3 in a row is an action
much like anything else in life my thinking is always 1st-time coincidence, second-time happenstance, the third time a clear tell of intent.
13:42 kevin aka mystery woman ,.. sets mark up to kill people claiming it is part of the test for him to be an agent ,.. I call solve at 13:42
16:12 kevin knew because mark was on the chat all day ,what he wore, where he was etc ,.. mark didn't know this "possible kevin was ghosting lurking in chat without being seen... or john is actually the catfisher and has played him all along "he's the only one that could have known all the daily onmark if the catfisher wasn't gleaning the info from ghosting.
17:36 abort code 6969 ,.. possible kevin viewed this as a prank ,.. the code allowing him to stop it from actually happening " hmm perhaps his way to end the sick game and he lost connection or couldn't complete the 6969 part so the attempted murder continued?
REVEAL yes it was John
"I'm guessing marks attack surprised him before he could orchestrate the 69 69 abort lie. lol

😄🤣😅
I'm surprised either one wasn't forced to go into therapy. WTH?
It a movie
The movie is called “Compliance”.
Wtf 😲

As someone with over a decade of experience in chatrooms, I saw red flags *everywhere*
What I wasn't expecting was the twist at the end.
Same. At first I thought Rachel was Kevin and just wanted attention.
Haha what you've failed to see, is unless you've met or video chatted with a person on multiple occasions.
Its possible All of them were just 1 stalker lol
Having no multiple accts doesn’t make you a stalker 🤣
You font need to be a member of a chatroom to see these red flags. They were all very obvious, with the exception of John being behind it all.
This is one of the weirdest stories I've ever heard.

It really is like wtf😳
Right! Wtf was all I could say
It still doesnt feel real, it feels like it didnt happen in real life
Can someone explain tho? I don't really understand the ending...So the person who got arrested was the person that got stabbed? Didn't Mark get any jail time for stabbing someone? I'm sooo confused by this story, please help me understand lol
John really should have worn a bullet proof vest that could deflect a knife blade. And when Mark realized he couldn't kill him, John would say "You've completed the test! You weren't supposed to kill me. But Rachel is a double-agent and we set up a trap to catch her. It also confirmed your ability to carry out missions that may require terminating someone." From there, John could keep up the ruse and have Mark go on a multitude of missions.
that actually wouldve been so cool
I don't actually think bullet proof vests could stop knives. I don't know what they're made out of now but from what I remember a knife could stab through. The vest only slows and weakens the impact of the bullet so it doesn't pierce your skin.
@@onewaystaircase they can but the plates are designed to break apart so depending on the force am the knife it may not work but we had some really dumb privates in the army that tried to stab each other so I've seen it work
🤣
@@onewaystaircase they work pretty well on knives. even the ones without plates. The design of bulletproof vests is to stop something from penetrating all the way through them, if a bullet cant penetrate all the way through, a knife blade from a stab will also have ALOT of trouble. you would still be hurt some from the force of the stab, but you wouldn't be cut.
but there is also such a thing as stab-proof vests.

Court system justice is dumb. It’s more important to find culpability and punish than to actually help the involved parties. In this case one kid got attempted murder charge on his record for wanting to feel loved (I understand he almost killed someone who wanted to die) and the mastermind got off with less than a slap on the wrist.

@A Z yeah i kind of assumed rachel was still a real person but is a scammer or abducter or something. I didnt expect LITERALLY EVERYONE IN THE CHAT ROOM was john LOL
all john but you see, they were also allll cake!!
ikr i physically gasped
Yo I had to pause the damn video! I never would have suspected him.
And the fact that something very similar to this happened to me before. It didnt end up in murder but bruh i cant believe i was dumb enough to believe that.

that's like committing suicide and then being posthumously charged with murder!
@@dazbeal5438 weirdly enough i had a friend who tried to commit suicide.... he was sent to jail for murder charges.... what is weird is that i found 15 corpses of children in his backyard!

I like how Mark never thought it was weird that Rachel didn’t go to the police after she was abducted. Instead she went to Mark and wanted a hug 😂
@Dave DDM No its not. Its a real case.
@@pegleg2959 because the movie is based on a true story
Not gonna lie I didn't even think of that
@@justanothergaming2086 oh hey Mark good to meet you!
Of course he didn't. After all, this is the same guy who thought he would unlock a chest on the seafloor with a dead body and get rich.

when you're too shy to tell a guy you love him and he's too stupid to know you're impersonating a spy.
When your smurf account plots to murder you.
Haha maybe Mark just wasn’t gay
@@Alienspecies635 Penetration by any means necessary.
Sounds like an anime plot
Right?? Who would believe all of this shit??? I’m amazed at how ppl can be so gullible. I’m so happy that I have trust issues.
Mark's gullibility is hilarious enough, but you'd think surely by the time they got to Janet he would realize something was up. 'I'm a secret agent and you'll be one of us and **I'll be your girlfriend** if you complete this mission''.
When I was young, my dad and I went on a chatroom together so he could show me how creepy and gross people were. He said "are these the type of people you want showing up at our house?" I said "No," and that's how I never trusted people online.
Your dad’s the real man!! Idk why my parents would never do that even if it makes me learn a valuable lesson, and they just expect me to go out there online and explore on my own hoping that I’m smart enough to not find any sort of trouble while being there...
thats actually a genius idea, your dad sounds like a smart man. probably the best parenting tip ive ever seen lol
@@Archerdon88 He also taught me me to defend myself with any item, mainly a sharp pencil because I was allowed to carry one around everywhere. He said he didn't want me being those dumb girls that die in the beginning of horror movies. 😂

Loved this, crazy story. And what's even crazier is how this guy was able to manipulate that many accounts.
Dude, I know right. HOW? I’m like thinking,The amount of time that must have taken. That is actually sick. He could have actually done a lot of good with the time he spent doing that.
@@cassiecraft8856 Yeah. He should have been committed to a treatment facility at least.
Seriously. 180 accounts. Who has the time to manipulate that many accounts it’s obscene to me.
Would be really interesting too see where these two are now.
This story is like something right out of a thriller movie. Wow!
" Not even fiction writers could come up with something like this "
Fiction writers; Hold my alien ✍
that's because the details of the story are so ludicrous. the fact that such nonsense actually happened is what makes it _amazing_
Lol..love it
If someone did write something like this, people will be quick to call plot hole or question how far people are willing to suspend their disbelief to accept that people are this gullible.
