It's hilarious to watch how paralleled your repairs and experience are to my own v70r I bought early last year. AWD issue, SAS repair, PCV, brakes, so many things I've done just to see a video from you a few weeks after. Important note, the listed way in VIDA to bleed the brakes is actually opposite the normal bleed process, starting with front left inner caliper, then going inner to outter caliper on each, finishing on the rear right. Something that also helped my pedal feel was "burping" the abs/bcm. Build pressure with the pedal same as bleeding the brakes, then crack the lines going to the bcm. I think there was a good video on here from Peppermint of the process
It is fun working on old Volvos with a great community behind it. I just replaced rusted calipers, rotors, pads and front brake lines for 10 hours on Saturday. As bad as it was, it was fun to do on a 1995 T5R.
Hey cool cat, you can put the hood into service position. There is a stop on each hinge that you can flip out of the way and the hood will swing up to a 90 degree position.
Taking the turbo out of my Focus ST (with a Volvo engine) I had to take out one of the driveshafts for clearance to drop it out of the bottom. The turbo itself was integrated into the exhaust manifold so I had to undo the whole thing from the block. Bought a new core and rebuilt turbo myself. Saved a lot over buying a whole unit. Works great.
Ah yes, good to see Volvo haven't really changed much in 30 or so years. My father-in-law had a Volvo 940 SE Turbo, 2.3 ltr engine with the low pressure turbo. Great car, but as soon as it started drinking oil, and the electrics started going in various areas, and the airbag warning lights started coming on (they need to be replaced every 10 years) we knew its time had come. We had that car for about 12 years, we used it a lot for towing boats and horse boxes. It had done about 130,000 miles by the time we sold it. Around town its fuel economy was awufl, but on a motorway I could get it into the high 30's MPG wise. Great videos, its great to watch, your uncle is brilliant too. Keep up the great work!

If it has an intercooler , you had better take it out and clean it out, because the oil will usually be from the inlet side seeing the higher pressure is on the exhaust side.
The good news is, there's always a silver lining, the Maserati has seemed downright reliable, easy to maintain, and cheap when comparing it to the Volvo!

One thing you are going to learn soon is that a Volvo is never not broken. An example is the ‘98 V70 GLT parked in front of my house. It is on it’s third transmission, has a headliner that doesn’t exist, and the bolts holding the AC condenser fell out while driving one day so the AC doesn’t work. Elliot, the access to the turbo is MUCH better when the Angle gear is removed.....and yes I realize that the prop shaft and right side axle have to come out to get the angle gear out, but I wouldn't attempt to do the turbo without removing it. I think when you go to reinstall, you will find it is harder yet to work in the cramped space, and do a proper job. Also, there is a coolant drain petcock on the back of the motor on the coolant piping, which would have made this project less messy.
Note on the brakes in the R: they are not immediate but they should feel linear. If you steep on it, you're going through the windshield, there should be some travel at the top, once you press a little more you'll stop a little more. Also, the video suggests that all that was done was bleeding out any air in the system when it really needed ALL the fluid replacing given the colour of the original fluid.

I've been looking at it all wrong, I'm not suffering from the sound of money leaving my wallet as I drain coolant. I'm being awarded with the sweet ambiance of Volvos very own relaxation waterfall. Loved the video, good job its harder than it looks for sure!
FyI Volvo P2s are supposed to bled opposite, closest wheel first. My V70 has been a constant problem everytime I fux one thing something else breaks. I still love it.
@@ElliottAlvis something to do with the massive volume if fluid in the system. It's in the Vida service procedure, also it shouldn't have green coolant.
Way to go Elliot and crew! I have a 2004 V70R and it too has been very expensive to own. I am following this series with great interest to see what might be in store for me next. I have a few things done on my car that might be beneficial for yours. As others have mentioned, stainless steel brake lines make all the difference in brake pedal feel on my car. The pedal travel is half of what it is on my other P2 Volvos (S80/XC90) and the pedal is very firm. I also noticed that your A pillar trim is shedding the fabric. You can easily replace that trim with the same part from the base model V70-it is simple molded plastic and very cheap via junk yards. Keep up the great work and I hope that the turbo install goes faster than the removal.
The good thing about having my engine out to replace the block, is the access to the turbo. Mine wasn't leaking oil past the seals, but I'm debating whether or not to rebuild it before sending the subframe back into it's cave. There are kits to rebuild the K24 too if you are so inclined. Pretty simple if you're careful and index the compressor wheel to the turbine shaft as to not upset the balance. Also, look for cracks in the turbine housing around the wastegate. Common, but not too serious.
Bought my -06 V70 2.4 last May. I've gotten 2 low oil level warnings but I've found that to be quite common in Volvo in general. I've used about 4 liters of oil in the last 11 months but I've also driven over 30 000km (20k miles) with it.
Keep at it Elliott!! The cat is counting on you so he can take Spaceball One for a drive soon!! LOL Seriously, LOTS of work I never ever want to do/try myself. Thanks for reminding me why I pay a professional to do this kind of work (ok, any kind of work) on my rides. Haha. Until the turbo returns.....
Bad bad practice to pump to the floor on a used master cylinder. The piston travels into a normally unused area in the bore where there is debris and will accelerate seal failure. You should only pump about half way or use a cheap vacuum bleeder. Also, it’s a good idea to perform an ABS bleed procedure on a car with an uncertain history or if the system has been opened or air has entered before the modulator
Yeah I had a bit of a soft pedal so I went out on a private road and did a few hard braking stops where the abs would trigger and it started to feel different. I bleed them again and it got more air out and felt better. It’s been much better since . I change my brake fluid every few years since they weren’t maintained before but luckily no signs of rust or leaks so far in the hardline when I replaced one (the soft lines had links at the fittings so I replaced them and one was seized on the hardline but the lines are on separate sections)
My xc90 turbo lost the wastegate and the blow off burst but it never smoked. It would not come out the top. Had to pull the AWD and drop it down. Firewall is different I think. Once AWD is out, the turbo is a breeze. Bolts weren't that cranky though.
Well done and great content again... Mine has only done 70k so have all this to come soon... I've probably already sent more than the car is worth.. I just love my volvo and will be with me for ever.... 👍
When I had that car new it had a little oil in the charge pipe. I took it to the dealer under warranty and they swore it was normal. Talking with other owners I found it was common. Never seen that on any of my other Turbos. While you've got it out, you should replace the engine bushings. I got a nice set of polyurethane ones from IPD.
I have a "95 850R and "00 S70R my first cars I ever bought. I feel the pain had to replace both volvo's turbos. Just to get space to get them out was a lego nightmare 😄
This was one of the first jobs I did on my 98' V70 xc. Went no better than you guys. Also would not recommend doing this in an old barn with bad lighting like I did.
Greetings Mr Motary Notary, the brake bleed went well, removing the turbo looked to be very tedious, at least you had the relaxing ambiance of the stream of coolant trickling down!!! It kinda sounded like someone taking a wiz but that's just me!!! I think that after this the Volvo should be in top shape. It was good to see the Maserati, even if for a moment!! Thanks for sharing your latest adventure!! 👍👍
Thanks Christopher! The turbo job was much more tedious than the video showed. But I didn't want to make the video horribly boring either. And I agree, its always good to see the Maserati!
I'm sure the turbo could use a service but this problem reminds me of a Volvo I worked on years ago. It was a turbo that was smoking really bad and all it was was a clogged port where that vacuum line attaches at the middle of the turbo. It got clogged up.
Dropping the whole suspension with engine/trans attach might be the way to go here. That is certainly how I've done engine swaps, with a lift, it really isn't hard to do, just the electrical connectors can be frustrating to disconnect when some just come right off, others...
Love it! But do note! I think P2 Volvo brakes are bled in reverse order! Check service manual. I think on P2 Volvo, the wheel CLOSEST to driver is the first to be bled (left on LHD and right on RHD) :D
I am spoiled from watching all the TH-camrs with vacuum bleeders. I'll probably end up buying one before doing brakes or brake fluid for the first time. Kind of surprising to see the "old fashioned way" 😁. Junkyard Digs got some fancy thing to automate the old fashioned way: a rod/prop to push and release the brake pedal, by remote control
I thought I had a blown turbo in my V70T5… it was just a torn charge pipe and a cracked vacuum hose. Fairly reliable systems when maintained… great cars.
Positioning the exhaust manifold and turbo towards the firewall makes it worse than a hassle. Remember my old Saabs, had it the opposite way, much easier working on the turbo!
10:47 Elliott, you are a phlebotomist's dream! Really great video today with the "final" V70R's repair job. Thank you so much for sharing this excellent series of videos.
In order to take out turbo from this volvo, i would take off right drive shaft - then angle gear - then its a childs play. And by taking off angle gear - you could check out the state of drive coupler between gearbox and angle gear, check out oil level and seal condition in angle gear, if needed, then make some preventive repair. And for easier work i would take off that turbo with all exhaust manifold and slide it out through the bottom. Its just easier in that way in my opinion. Sometimes i even take engine out to make a big maintenance - , timing belt with water pump, valve seals, turbo, clutch and other repairs....all in one repair and good to go. For this volvo engine out job is about 2 to 3 hours, so i kind a dont understand what you did there for 2 to 3 days 😆😆
Finally caught up with you...man, what an awful location for the turbo. Glad I never had to work on one of those! Its gonna be a great car once its done!
Shouldn't affect pcv much. Small restrictive lines is what screws the pooch on that. Try using 5/8 hose and a catch can in between the oil trap and turbo inlet. You can drain it from the water pipe as well since removing turbo. The seals also leak the other way into the exhaust not always into the charge pipes. If your burning it through the motor not through the exhaust i would pull and clean the charge pipes and maybe the intercooler. Some brake clean and compressed air usually does the trick. Just keep it off the rubber parts. Have never seen a banjo bolt so tight!! Thats crazy someone got a bit muscle happy on assembly there. Could also unhook the feed line from its rubber counterpart and remove the turbo with the feed line.
Also, now would be a great time to potentially upgrade the turbo, while its out! Perhaps not so much to need to tune the ECU for it, but maybe a little more pep in it's step!
@@autobahnproven not many tbh, I did one on c70, one on V70 and 2x V40 (4 banger but still a whiteblock engine). Never tried taking just the turbo off but looks like a major pain especially without wobble sockets, long spanners and other special tools.

Stainless steel break lines will greatly improve pedal feel as those lines are 15+ years old and not up to the task anymore that plus’s a full break fluid flush will be great
Good work!! At least you didn't need to remove the angle gear to get access to the oil and cooling lines to the turbo I have to replace the gasket since i had a oil leak.. Replace the gaskets for originals from volvo.. they cost 5 dollars... Now OUT WITH THE OLD ONE (DONE!) IN WITH THE NEW ONE!!

That's interesting about the bleeding procedure. Any idea why that is?
@@ElliottAlvis something to do with the massive volume if fluid in the system. It's in the Vida service procedure, also it shouldn't have green coolant.
@@E1320_ I was going to comment on the coolant as well. Erik, you are 100% correct, someone put the incorrect coolant in this car.
Can’t wait to see it sorted out and painted! Don’t give up! Keeping her going says a lot about your character in my opinion, dedication
Bought my -06 V70 2.4 last May. I've gotten 2 low oil level warnings but I've found that to be quite common in Volvo in general. I've used about 4 liters of oil in the last 11 months but I've also driven over 30 000km (20k miles) with it.
Elliott, never underestimate older man strength.
Cool video glad to see you doing videos again
Keep at it Elliott!! The cat is counting on you so he can take Spaceball One for a drive soon!! LOL Seriously, LOTS of work I never ever want to do/try myself. Thanks for reminding me why I pay a professional to do this kind of work (ok, any kind of work) on my rides. Haha. Until the turbo returns.....
Same here! My new daily is in the shop right now getting some love because I don’t trust myself to mess with it and not screw it up. 😆
I love the positive attitude. Almost to 50k subscribers. Keep up the good work.
My xc90 turbo lost the wastegate and the blow off burst but it never smoked. It would not come out the top. Had to pull the AWD and drop it down. Firewall is different I think. Once AWD is out, the turbo is a breeze. Bolts weren't that cranky though.
I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Easter 🐣 Sunday. Nice to see you and your Uncle.
That lift is basically a Car Trek lift before the Volvo went up.. the Maserati and the Diesel Benz Wagon!
Remember to drain the intercooler for oil before you start up and give it some boost.
Good idea!
Well done and great content again... Mine has only done 70k so have all this to come soon... I've probably already sent more than the car is worth.. I just love my volvo and will be with me for ever.... 👍
"Sent"? You know what they say; "Volvo bills for life!" Lol
Do not forget to clean out the intercooler. That oil being passed went straight into it.
Good call!
This was one of the first jobs I did on my 98' V70 xc. Went no better than you guys. Also would not recommend doing this in an old barn with bad lighting like I did.
The way your going you’ll technically end up with a new car with all the parts you’re changing 😂😂😂
It sure feels like it!
6:37 AMONGUS
Sorry I had to. great video as always Elliot
😂😂😂
Dropping the whole suspension with engine/trans attach might be the way to go here. That is certainly how I've done engine swaps, with a lift, it really isn't hard to do, just the electrical connectors can be frustrating to disconnect when some just come right off, others...
Elliot lucky to have your uncle
Love it! But do note! I think P2 Volvo brakes are bled in reverse order! Check service manual. I think on P2 Volvo, the wheel CLOSEST to driver is the first to be bled (left on LHD and right on RHD) :D
Yes and for me. I'd have pulled almost all of that bottle through the system to flush out the fluid.
@@StuEvans I agree, you’re already there and it would only take another few minutes to do. 🤷🏻♂️
Yup, just did this a few weeks ago. Listed process in vida (volvo oem diag tool) starts front left
I thought ABS systems shouldn’t be bled the pedal way and should use a pump ?
Slide a hose over the water pipe drain and crack it loose. Even draining rad petcock still will hold some in the water pipe on the back of the block.
A leak in the brakebooster is a known fail on the volvo V70 S60. Got the same problem
I just love your videos about this car and love seeing you two working together!
Well thanks!
Your uncle enjoys this Volvo as much as you do Elliott!
18:44 Elliott creates the next exercise craze, "Turbo Curls"!
Here's hoping that Turbo Curls catch on!
@@ElliottAlvis I believe that they will, Elliott!
I thought I had a blown turbo in my V70T5… it was just a torn charge pipe and a cracked vacuum hose. Fairly reliable systems when maintained… great cars.
What were your symptoms?
Love seeing you guys working on the Volvo, looking forward to the refit and painting the bonnet.
Positioning the exhaust manifold and turbo towards the firewall makes it worse than a hassle.
Remember my old Saabs, had it the opposite way, much easier working on the turbo!
I have only ever really worked on a Volvo 440. Absolute nightmare of a thing. You have to move the engine to change the water pump.
10:47 Elliott, you are a phlebotomist's dream! Really great video today with the "final" V70R's repair job. Thank you so much for sharing this excellent series of videos.
Thanks Mitchell. I'm glad you liked it!
@@ElliottAlvis Yes sir!
Haha, yeah… Let’s hope!
Hey Elliott, you actually bleed from the CLOSEST caliper first on this car
And the fun Yellow Corvette sits on the rack !!!!!! Please summer is coming lets have some Vette Road Trip Content !!!!!!!
Gonna be so worth it once everything is sorted!
Sure hoping so! 😂
I always remove the turbo with the exhaust manifold still attached to it on these.
I wonder if that would've made it easier!
Sounds like we could learn from you 👍 About how many have you done?
@@autobahnproven not many tbh, I did one on c70, one on V70 and 2x V40 (4 banger but still a whiteblock engine). Never tried taking just the turbo off but looks like a major pain especially without wobble sockets, long spanners and other special tools.
@@szczepansopur6003 Thanks. I plan on keeping my car for a while. You've done more than the zero I've done. Great to have you sharing your experiences here 👍
I’m planning to put mid length headers on my car this summer and was curious how you get the manifold off. Mine is 23 years old and I’m scared to break a stud off. Best luck with heat? Impact? Penetrant?
Jeez what a task that was! I don't envy you on this one, Elliott! But it's out, and on its way! I'm just glad you didn't drop it at the end!
Not dropping the turbo is always a bonus! Thanks for watching as always Bunker!
"Final issue om this car"...
Famous last words.
Shouldn't have said that 😂
Stainless steel break lines will greatly improve pedal feel as those lines are 15+ years old and not up to the task anymore that plus’s a full break fluid flush will be great
What a pain this has become. My Volvo V70 blew up on the highway on Christmas Eve! My 5th Volvo. Love them, but I'm done.
Oh my goodness. I can understand why you're over them!
Good work!!
At least you didn't need to remove the angle gear to get access to the oil and cooling lines to the turbo
I have to replace the gasket since i had a oil leak..
Replace the gaskets for originals from volvo.. they cost 5 dollars...
Now OUT WITH THE OLD ONE (DONE!) IN WITH THE NEW ONE!!
I’m dreading this on my car. It’s doing the same thing as yours was. I literally 007 anybody I pass! I want to put a hybrid back in its place
That car has been a F ing nightmare from the get go. WOW!
It totally was the impact gun! That IR gun is mean!
I always enjoy a Volvo video. Keep up the good work Elliot!
Thanks Ian!
You’re lucky to have your uncle help you,I’ve only ever had it the other way round with three of them 😂
I just came across your video.. might be 2 late but here goes.. as far as the hood.. you can swap it out with any black S60 V70 or xc70.. I got one for my R .. 50$ from the junkyard
If you haven't done so already, try properly bedding in the brakes (there's a million articles and videos on how best to do that). Once that's done, chances are you'll feel a significant improvement in braking power.
Wow! That looked like an ordeal!! And, you've still got to get the turbo back in once it's back. I'm really looking forward to seeing it running the way it should and excited to see it painted and looking fresh. I still think it deserves a Volvo touring car racer livery 😁
