Steampianist - Ang Cariñosa - feat. Gumi
- Inspired by a kundiman song called Ako'y Iniwan Mo
"The song is about a woman who is left behind by her lover for another woman
and halfway through the song there is a spokenword section where its a letter
by the unfaithful dude and it's like telling the listener to feel bad for the guy
and probably forgive him. i find it weird why a song would want us to empathize/sympathize
with a cheater and i've come to the conclusion its probably due to the composer's
roman catholic values, forgiveness and all, the thought irritated me a bit so i've
decided to make a tagalog song where the opposite happens and have a bloody ending"

Lyrics
Sabi mo ako'y ang tanging iibigin
Salungat ang aking nadama
Patuloy-tuloy pa rin ang aking puso
Naniwala sa ating sumpaan
Pre-Chorus
Bathala bakit nagkaganyan
Ako bang may sala
Parang ako'y pinagtampuhan
Panalangin ng aking katinuan
Nawa ay hinding siphayo ang aking mapala
Chorus
Dibale, O aking sinta ika'y pinatawad
'Di na kailangan magpaliwanag pa
Mahal pa din kita
Chorus
Tiwalang iningatang iyong pinatay
Bridge
Bahay kubo dahil maliit

HI LOLA!!!

For those wondering what those "Mirror with an Eye" are, those are Lover's Eye. Those aren't mirrors... In Europe back during Regency & the Early Victorian period, there was a love trend that I don't doubt was also known in the Philippines (which I wish to see someday cause I doubt our country hasn't tried that sh*t yet even in a short period of time). This love trend is to have someone or yourself paint a miniature portrait of your lover's eye and have your friends guess who it is...
At the last part, she really went all in with the crimson paint.

Is this it, Cariñosa one of the most beloved Filipino folk dance, gonna be covered by SteamPianist? And has lyrics inspired by Ako'y Iniwan Mo!

@@acebessie I didn't know that. Neat
Yo I love Filipino regards from malaysian!
@@tritondemius3723 I didn't know too, I only know just now when he use tagalog on live chat.
I'm Pinoy
I love it when you listen closely at 3:05 you can hear "bahay kubo" as she says "nipa hut" it's a very nice detail!
I really like how some parts of the tune actually include the same melody used in the Cariñosa dance, just in a more "sinister" tone to signify that this is a dark and one sided love song.
I also especially loved the part where it started playing a sinister version of bahay kubo, another childhood folk song thats very popular in the Philippines. You really know your stuff and I like that alot!!
This is such a dark yet charming song man. If only you could get more listeners from the Philippines
I feel like the mirrors mean something-they signify the emotions that the woman felt during the course of events in this song.
Black tears mean she’s sad, grieving or sorrowful. Having discovered her (presumably) husband’s escapades (2:25), the tears started to run down when she realized that he broke her trust. The eyes kept crying for the remainder of the song up to the part where she finally did what she wanted to do (4:34).
The cracks in the mirror mean that she’s furious. The first time they appear is when she’s cursing the woman whom the husband had an affair with (3:28) and the second time is when she finally killed him. No sadness at that point, just pure hatred (4:34).
The red eyes symbolize her murderous intent, which first appeared when she sang about the limbs barely fitting inside the nipa hut (3:09). Notice how she decided to hold the dagger until the end, except for the times where she had to conceal it whenever he’s around (4:01). Just like the tears suddenly disappearing, the eyes go back to brown once she takes his life.
That’s just my interpretation though!!! Feel free to reply with your insights and suggestions ahah✨
(Oh my god I haven’t checked the comments section since this song came out on Spotify😭 Thanks guys! Today I learned that those mirrors are actually pieces of lover’s eye jewelry and she starts holding the knife at 2:25… probably means that killing was just a fleeting thought on the back of her mind at first upon immediately seeing him.)
This was a really good interpretation ! Also i didn't know that it was mirrors tho.
I'm surprised that no one has said anything about the pair of mirrors and good interpretation btw i can totally see that
They're not mirrors actually they're called Lover's Eyes
@@Steampianist Lover's Eyes ? So, is that her eyes ?

For people who don't know, the Carinosa is a Filipino folk dance that tells of the courtship and love (traditionally) between a man and a woman, and the dance steps express the playful love they have for each other. HAHAHA I LOVE THIS COMMENT LOL
"Bahay kubo, balikat ulo~"
Here's the story from what I've figured from the lyrics in the song.
Our singer is a young woman who is in a relationship (from what I believe, they are married, note the "Remember our promises," line, which most likely means wedding vows.) After some time, the woman began to doubt her partners faith to her, and begins to question him. (The main chorus reflects this thought of mine.) At first she isn't in too big trouble in doubting her partners faith, however when she asks him one day, he grows furious and hits her. (Note, "this purple blooming on my face" signifies a bruise given to her by her lover.) It is assumed that the following night, she'd see him with another woman. Upset beyond belief, rage begins to boil up inside, and she grows to plot her lovers demise. As days go by she would curse the woman who took her partner from her, and after some time, she confronts her partner and kills him. (I believe she cut out his heart, based off of the ending lyrics. The idea of her believing it's rightfully hers goes literally, I suppose.)
If this is wrong, do correct me. I'm German American and I don't know the full history behind this song. It's a beautifully composed piece as always and I enjoy listening to it! :]
The word "gigil" doesn't have a direct translation in english, the purple blooming in her face is a metaphor. Gigil is that intense feeling that could be negative or positive, but in this one its negative
You're the only one who got that purple blooming on her face! :D Can confirm that the guy hit her when she once asked him to stop being a fuckboi
filipino here ! this is how i understood it based from the tagalog lyrics.
she doubted her husband but resulted in forgiving him and gave him the benefit of the doubt. "the purple blooming in her face" is just a metaphor for a rlly intense feeling as user kocchanbinch said. the husband did not hit her in any kind.
and when she finally spotted him with another woman irl, her line of trust snapped. she became angry at the woman (she insults the woman and called her a hag and told her that the husband didn't belong to the hag lmao) and heartbroken at the husband. (she monologues abt how the husband promised her that he'll always love her which yknow was a lie) then in a fit of rage, she murdered them both then and there in the bahay kubo (a traditional house in the Philippines) she spotted them in - that didn't even belong to either of them- this created a mess in the hut with their bodies mangled ; body parts scattered around the floor and walls.
and as you said, the heart that is now in her hands as the husband promised it would always be in.
fun fact! there's a certain law in the Philippines that makes it legal for a legally married woman to kill her husband and the person he's cheating with as long as she flees from the location she killed them in/where the couple lives in.
this is a rlly good translation, i loved the way how you articulated the story !!

Bravo! Honestly the implementation of the folk songs are very spot on. Still sticking with the dark theme as you have always been doing. As a Filipino, the accent was pretty good actually, could definitely use some small changes but damn was that an amazing piece showcasing a modernized take on our folk songs.
Edit: Been listening nonstop for about an hour now, the slow descent into madness and then the breaking point. This is just perfection you can really feel how intense the feelings that are being conveyed.

Kawaii Kurun Ahhhh! Thanks!
My analysis on this (by listening to the original song) compared to your description is that I don't think sympathy for the cheater is the focus here. I interpret the song is about the woman receiving and reading a letter at her desk from her ex some day who had disappeared for a long time for another woman with the reason that he couldn't resist her.
Perhaps... The point is that the composer didn't mean to convince the listener to sympathize the cheater but rather the composer wanted you to be in the perspective of the cheated woman reading the letter and how heart struck, confused, and irritated it must've been if some day you were in the same scenario where you've been sent a text message by your lover for the same thing. The composer wanted to make you feel and think what the cheated woman feels. That's my subjective interpretation of the song.
Just to clarify its not really a cover of anything it's just that because of "Ako'y iniwan mo" i was motivated to write Ang Cariñosa
And you might be right about the intentions of the composer
@@Steampianist Ah, well either way. You made a wonderful mix between the two songs ("Ako'y iniwan mo" and "Cariñosa") with your own dark twist which is really cool. And with the modern music we have rn, it's not everyday to hear cultural music to be put to use which I think is a great source of interpolation (borrowing a melody of a song but with your own rendition) besides Electro Swing music (using 30s swing music mixed with electronic music). Yep! The accent was strong in this one. Hiraya is a better voice bank for Filipino since it’s especially made for the language, so the accent is on point and clearer.

I waited forever for this! I love it! Especially the idea of a yandere maria clara. The tone is amazing and I really like that there was even a 'Bahay Kubo' piece in the song.
Ang galing mo talaga. Salamat po!
It makes me remember that one Luka song "The tailor of enbizaka". So cool
I love Mothy
same, I'm having that same vibe even I'm literally Filipino
Same vibe but different story. The tailor did it for revenge because kaito killed her husband and child so she did the same. She's envious that his family is whole, happy, and alive while hers is not.
Same vibe as Kikuo - Love me Love me Love me and some elements that are most likely inspired from it
@@saavii1934 agreed
Honestly the Philippines has one of the darkest folklores around the world so dark vocaloid songs fits it really well
Steampianist: "So I found a song that's sympathetic to a cheater, and it pissed me off...so I made this for you!"
I didn't even realize this song was in Tagalog. This was great , I'm glad I caught it live

Gosh, this- this is the one. This gave me the chills. Everything was executed so perfectly from start to end.
I love the Filipino folk song instrumental which is so well put and alluring to hear, to top it off with the amazing lyrics that tell a disturbing and pitiful perspective of the young lady as she slowly goes into madness by love, jealousy, obsession and rage. Along with that, there's the details of the art and animation that completes everything with the story and is eye opening to the lyrics.
i remember when this was played instead of the actual cariñosa during our practice awhile ago 😭
I really like the detail where her lover stops "breathing" and moving like she does once she's taken his heart, her still idly moving body versus his faint hand movements, as if he's trying to grasp for something in his last moments.
Ugh I just get so hyped when I read lyrics in my own language but with a vocaloid as vocals. And just in time for Buwan ng Wika lol
Edit: My mom suddenly came in my room and danced while not realizing the lyrics speak of severed heads and limbs 🤣
Lol
AYYY we also got buwan ng wika and it's bEAUTIFUL
Bro we celebrate buwan ng wika on our school today. What a coincidence
bruh, I'm in college there is no buwan ng wika T_T
I just moved to a different country and to a new school. but I miss celebrating buwan ng wika in my old school :(
Please let this become a thing. This is so good. There is so much potential in this fusion of genres
Fun fact: Cariñosa actually means, affectionate or Loving, and the Cariñosa filipino folk dance is used in the intents of flirting or courtship, usually, filipino girls are depicted as shy or "Maria Clara" 's in filipino songs but apparently not in this one
(I was in school learning about filipino folk dances while watching this lmao)
Every time I see Eleanor's art on a steampianist song, I know it's gunna be a bop!
This is so artistic. It makes you feel like you're in an old and possibly haunted Filipino manor and you stay there for a few days or so and you find this old portrait of the lady and the baron and as the housekeeper tells you their story, this song plays
in the Philippines divorce is illegal however if you catch your spouse cheating on you and kill them, you won't go to jail. You'll suffer "destierro", a banishment or only a prohibition from residing within the radius of 25 kilometers from the actual residence of the accused for a specified length of time.
so you (living in baguio) can kill your cheating spouse who lives in manila without suffering much consequence?? (aside from social and other stuff)
This could be a soundtrack for a Filipino television series about murder/thriller drama set in the fourth quarter of Spanish colonial era.
As a Filipino, I'm very happy cause I never thought that you would make a cover for this- This is really good though.
Its not really a cover
The verses, chorus melody and the loud bridge are original
I just incorporared and reharmonize the theme of cariñosa
@@Steampianist My mistake then, you did really great though :D

I want to learn Tagalog just so I can sing this
good luck! no, seriously. I'm super happy you have an interest in the language but gosh. Even as a native speaker, I'd say it's hard
Even though I grew up around the language starting when I was 6 (moved back to the Philippines, was an immigrant in another country before that hence why English became my first language, it didn't help how I studied at a school that had English as its primary language)
I still tend to make mistakes when trying to figure out which suffixes to add to a verb (ex: Kailangan kong MAGtulog, MAtulog o tUMulog?) and aaahhhhhh my goddd it's frustrating. I can't imagine being completely new to the language and having to figure all of this out from nothing!!
But people still manage to do it, which is, y'know, such a flex. Tagalog's ranked at a 3 for its learning difficulty by the FSI which isn't all too far from the highest ranking of 4 which only contains 4 languages: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. I'd bet that if we kept our precolonial writing script of Baybayin, it'd probably be ranked higher.
@@lx3ctcountrybadsaladman205 same tayo.....jgfnjkesnfskgg
nakakagigil talaga kapag wrong grammar T ^ T
Funfact and cool detail i noticed: in the "oh god, tell me how did it come to this?", the filipino lyrics doesnt use "Diyos" which what we commonly call jesus or a god in general, instead it used "Bathala", a god of creation in filipino mythology
Its so rare to find dark filipino songs... and the first one I found is also a traditional song? This is legit the best. The fact that cariñosa is a song of love and this version is the opposite is just, chef's kiss, great work :D
-a filipino
Hearing this in our language is just very satisfying 〜(꒪꒳꒪)〜 really like the yandere maria clara hahahahaha
Omg I just realized you're the reason why I had nightmares back then!!! (I listen to that shit when I was still new to vocaloid imagine the trauma it caused me. 😭) To be fair my introduction to vocaloid was the messed up side with all the gore etc. Until today I'm still scared of listening to secrets of wisteria. Wtf.
I love playing the octavina as a child, this song was my favorite song to play seeing as the story has a much more deeper meaning to it. I like old Filipino folk songs.
better than the New ones

Woah hearing this send shivers down my spine. Didn't know that hearing a composition by Steampianist covering our Traditional language would be so amazing. The way the ending of the song you can hear the heartbeats fading away truly fits the bloody ending of the lyrics and the song (in which case the woman kills the cheater and takes his heart away) just WOW

How great this song is a filipino folk song style yet it is dark, but still upbeating despite it is on a minor key. I love how it portray the melody in a mysterious way but still retains the sound in filipino culture, and this given me a new experience.

idk if its my eyes being goofy as hell but during the first parts of the song, you can see the lover also swaying, which becomes less noticeable and slower when he's killed at around 4:34
