- The BMW M340i got an LCI for the '23 model year! It now has idrive 8, slightly revised fascias, and a new shifter. I took it for a drive in the California canyons to see what it was all about!

@@DailyMotor yeah my cousin has an x5 M and he said they made it feel like it drives like a car and being in that 600hp beast i agree, the strut bars make it have like car level body roll instead of suv for an SUV that size

I hit this route in my ZL1 a year ago….phenomenal drive when there no traffic.
Spectacular landscape. A well-chosen scenery to get a taste of this piece of machinery.
This gen of the 3 series looks great. No ugly, disproportionate grille. Everything looks perfect.

Charlie wasn’t holding back! This car is such a sweet spot. It’s a shame all the pops and bangs are done through the speakers on the LCI models. Definitely needs a Remus exhaust
These seem like such a sweet spot in the sports sedan segment. I just reviewed one of these recently and I’m very impressed by it. Great review!
For daily driving purposes like for work and once a month long driving, which one would you prefer? M340i or z4 m40i?

Picking up mine tomorrow night. Fired up. Sad to trade in my Mustang GT PP but looking for a year round daily and also enthusiastic car. This engine seems more than fun. Nice exotic sound. I was pleased with the test drive.

The new 2023 m340i is just more impressive im going towards this car and will buy it soon bmws are just different in looks, and the power and grip that they got

the old shift lever can be retrofitted onto the new one. but yes the new one sucks

I would have liked to hear your opinions on how the M340i felt in comparison to the M3 comp. Oh well
Speed- not noticeably different until above around 70-80mph, then the M3 has more power at the top end.
Steering- M3 has more feedback and is more communicative, both are very precise, but the M340i is a bit hard to tell on center/feel understeer. Both are vague compared to the best of the best like McLaren or Porsche.
Suspension- honestly not appreciably different. The M340i settles just as well as the M3 and feels like it has the same amount of grip. The M3 is more firm in day to day driving, but I honestly do not notice a difference on track.
Brakes- the same in day to day driving, but the M340i’s brakes are more sensitive to heat on track. Both are brake by wire so there’s not much pedal feel in either.
Verdict- I’d go with the M340i, it is 20-30k cheaper, looks way better, and comes very close to the M3 in terms of performance. Unless you are looking for a dedicated track car, it is not worth spending the extra money for the M3 (and if you are looking for a dedicated track car for 80-90k, I’d recommend a Cayman instead).

@@connorscanlon6289 The S58 in the M3 is literally the better version of the B58 in the m340 . To say it’s close in performance is just misinformation, S58 has stronger internals , better cooling , also is twin turbocharged instead the single turbo in the m340 . The looks are subjective ,personally I don’t think the g80 is ugly at all and it looks more aggressive than a m340 for sure .

About them getting rid of the shifter. Why? BMW was making cool shifters in recent years.

I know it's something simple, but I really can't get past the loss of the gear shift handle, in any car, not just the bmw. Simple little thing, but I have nothing to rest my hand on and it's maddening to me.

iDrive 8 is a Mongolian clusterfuck. And the tacked-on giant screen compounds the problem. Such a shame - outstanding drivetrain, ruined by video game instrument cluster, tacked-on widescreen insanity.
oh come on, it might not be the best dash aesthetics, but it doesn't 'ruin' the car either. I do prefer the previous version though of course, as I have in my own car with idrive 7 and a normal dash but still the B58 and its 382 hp
@@MrTresto "Might not be the best" is just a milder way of me saying "Mongolian clusterfuck". And yeah it does indeed ruin the car for me. They'll fix it eventually - a redesigned dash will come along at some point that actually looks like it was meant for this giant screen. Until then - full stop.
If thats an X7 M60i it can definitely hang with and perhaps outpace a M340i...despite the weight disadvantage tgat M60 has almost 170 more hp n 170 more tq

@@Stevie4171 In a 50 mile radius of where I live (Carolinas), there's only two for sale -- a 2018 340i and a 2019 M340i.
I'm not a fan of the idrive 8 screen, but I'll get past it because it drives so well.

@@mischaraine1645 no one is talking about the car. only the entertainement system. both are LCD/led screens with a software that perform the same task. open and close apps. Its called "tech". i dont think the screen affects the drive of the fcking car.

Ahhh the IconicSound making that fake popping noise and fart shifts. Fun to hear through speakers, even though you cant hear all that outside.
Can you turn it off?
@@manuelmartens you can turn it off in the drive settings, but I believe the IconicSound makes the actual exhaust louder in sport plus mode. But inside the cabin you’ll hear more pops and the “fart” shifting, but the it doesn’t sound like that outside.
What are you talking about? These are real shift sounds and you can hear the pops and bangs outside super evidently. Stop disinforming people 😂 BMW IconicSound applies to electric models.
@@DMCarReviews I'm telling you those are not real pops and bang sounds from the outside. You only get a little bit of it from the outside. From the inside through the speakers are overrun...I own one....IconicSound is on in the driving settings> drivetrain and chassis> iconicsoud...go look for it turn it off and see if you hear the "fart" shifting, pops and bangs..
@@j_y48 That is false information. I have an X4 M40i, and my friend is M340i and there is plenty of sound outside IconicSound only existent in electric models.

When it comes to overall package - which one is the more fun car to drive? The powerful BMW with its butter smooth B58 or the engaging FWD Type R with its manual transmission and its superior handling? Thx for a short feedback!

I haven't driven the new Type R yet, but it's really gonna depend on what you want to do with the car! Honestly for a canyon road like that, I'd rather be in a CTR, but for daily driving, and long open roads, give me the M340i!

The X7 is driving real hard (for a big SUV like a X7) and the M340i is not even close to the limit.
