The movie you're thinking of is Say Anything, which I highly recommend. It was filmed when Seattle was still beautiful. John Hughs was THE director for realistic (ish) teen movies. We loved him because he didn't talk down to us, or shy away from uncomfortable things. Gen X really had the good life, but it wasn't perfect. We didn't always have great home lives, our teachers rarely cared if we were bullied or sexually harassed, even if it happened in front of them, and we were left to figure out a lot on our own. Maybe thats why kids today are a little soft, because we wanted to make a bit easier on them. I wish I could say kids werent verbally abused and threatened by teachers in the 80s, but it was very common and they very rarely punished for it.
This was the classic 80s film about teenage problems. John Hughes was one of the best writer directors from 1980 to 1995. Many of his movies is about the high school experience. Must see John Hughes movies including this one are Ferris Bueller's day off, Some Kind of Wonderful, Pretty in Pink, Uncle Buck. Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Home Alone.

one of my top movies. So many feels, graduated at that time so I can identify with their feelings and some of the stories so well. This cannot, and must never be remade. It would be a movie of a group of self focused teens in detention. All staring at their phones the entire time.

I got busted smoking in the girls room a lot. Slap on the wrist compared to today. This movie is my generations library and diary. Exagerrated for Hollywood but all the underlying issues are spot on. ✌
Haha I love hearing about those days and it's interesting to see how things have changed. When I was in highschool we had a smoking area and smoked weed there all the time as well, but trying smoke in the school would have got me expelled. 😂

Glad you enjoyed it. One comment: it's not actually a "weird" movie with regards to the dynamic of the characters. It's very realistic in the way the mood can shift so suddenly. After all, the saying "Truth is stranger than fiction" has to be based on something, right? That's how life usually is, and that's why movies with tonal shifts stand out and relate with the viewer. Also, dark humor often comes right after something dark, and the situation of the Breakfast Club is kind of bleak (weekend detention, personal problems, peer pressure and friction). I think that it's actually modern Hollywood that has a very "on rails" character development now, with predictable situations and dialogues.
COOL FACTS about this school and John Hughs Movies. In the beginning of this movie they show some School Pictures of Students and one of those Pictures is of CARL THE JANITOR ( with Long full Hair ) He actually went to this school as a student and was voted Most Likely To Succeed and ironically he is the Janitor in this movie but was a successful Hollywood Actor. This school was a Closed School and John Hughs ( being from that area ) was allowed to use this school for this production and other movie productions. The GYMNASIUM was actually used for the part of the Movie Set of John Hughs HOME ALONE.. The HOME ALONE House INTERIOR was built inside the Gym of this school and the offices and classrooms were used as Production Office Space and Props and wardrobe Space. ANOTHER FUN FACT is that BRIAN came to school brought by his mother and little sister ( YOU FIND A WAY TO STUDY MISTER ) in FACT that mom and sister was actually his real mother and real little sister. At the end of the movie BRIAN is picked up from school by his father and IN FACT the father is played by JOHN HUGH's Himself.

I've only seen a clip from it (from a video called How To Fall in Love with Judd Nelson). Apparently John Hughes saw Judd Nelson in that and wanted him to portray John Bender 😊
I've always said, regarding this film, that, if you see it as a teen, you'll love it forever. If you see it after, you'll never appreciate it in the same way.

My school tried Saturday school for about 3 months after this movie came out. Stopped it when there was push back from teachers not wanting to do it and realizing it wasn't stopping students like me from getting in trouble. For the 3 months I was in there every Saturday but 2. I was pretty much Bender.
The Vernon character is what happens when teachers remain in the profession too long. He probably started out a great teacher, but after dealing with students who really are problematic sucking up the staff's energy and occasional teachers who don't care and parents who care even less, he became the type of bully he'd been struggling with. Teaching is a demoralizing career path.
Let me be clear, to when you said they should snitch on bender, as a genXer, you NEVER snitch. Only acceptable snitch would be on a sibling to the parental units (tho depends on infraction. Was that your first John Hughes film? If so, you def have to check out Planes, Trains, and Automobiles -- that might be the perfect comedy (and one of the few Hughes films that feels timeless and not locked in the 80s).
I've seen Ferris Bueller but I don't remember much and I have seen Planes, Trains and Automobiles but I was really young. I loved John Candy as a kid so that and Uncle Buck I'd watch but don't really remember either.

Thanks Jay, I love Breakfast Club mainly because I relate. I had detention and corporal punishment most days in high school, and I don't look back on it negatively. And yes peer pressure was a nightmare in the eighties, not that its any less now.
I remember having to go to school on a Saturday a few times.. 2 maybe 3 times. Where I'm from, back in the day it was called Saturday SAC.. if you had gotten in trouble during the week for something that didn't warrant a suspension this where you ended up for punishment.. some of your offenses could consis of either being insubordent, rude with a teacher, excessive tardiness or got into fight/tussle that didn't get too out of hand or broken up quickly.. you had to come to school on a Saturday like a normal school day during the week.. for us, we didn't sit in the Library, they had us in the Cafeteria and the teacher or diciplinary officer stayed there with us.. everyone sat at their own table, was to be quiet and was suppose to do school work for the duration.. we didn't do an essay.. if you didn't bring anything to work on, you were suppose to copy the dictionary.. I remember for me, I spent most of the time just drawing graffitti sketches and practicing my tagging alphabets.. there sure wasn't any weed circle therapy bonding sessions like the Breakfast Club.
I love how Brian was so shocked bender had weed but was like the second one to go over to smoke it. As someone who went to junior high and high school in the 80’s this movie perfectly captures the cliques and what it was like. I don’t understand why younger people hate this movie and find it so problematic.
I think this is a movie reminding us to imagine other people as being just as complex as we are ourselves and having their own turmoil and issues, especially those who are so different from us that we rarely otherwise interact with them. I think that message is even more true today, when we often tend to imagine people in other "tribes" as being a combination of stupid and/or evil, depending on what suits us better at the moment. I also think this movie should never be remade. The people who feel nostalgia for it will hate the remake for not scratching that itch, and the people who don't have any nostalgia for it won't care about a remake. Plus, if they remade it, it would have to have a more diverse cast. That's fine by me, but about 40% of the potential audience would hate that on principle and decide without ever seeing the film that the producers are woke and therefore stupid and/or evil.
Back when we took our teens to see the underrated horror/sci fi film "The Faculty", I eliminated all the stereotypes from this movie (jock, princess, nerd, criminal, weirdo) to ferret out the one kid in their group who was probably the alien monster. Highly recommended!

Yes - we had school detention on Saturdays (getting in trouble at school didn't get you out of school). We also had summer school for those who were flunking and/or needing to make up school for other reasons. Mom used to send us to summer school just to keep us learning. So we'd go in the mornings and then walk up to the pool afterwards. As far as serious to joking to serious - humor/joking is a defense mechanism. And just with all defense mechanisms, it can be healthy but also cross into unhealthy.

I've thoroughly enjoyed your new reaction channel - sorry I got here a bit late (as usual). I watched TBC dozens of times in HS - recorded it on VHS off HBO as soon as it came to the home mkt and then wore that tape out. It holds a special place in my heart as it came out my sophomore year at a time when my parents were going through divorce and I was living alone for a bit and then with my grandmother. While some references are a bit dated, i think it still holds up pretty well given its universal and enduring themes (bullying, teen angst, peer pressure, etc). As you noted, most of the weirdness comes from the casual misogyny and following up heavy issues with punchlines (the gun/flare gun thing... though still funny). I got my rising 8th grader to watch it with me on the plane home from our recent trip, and she really liked it even though she, like you, thought it was weird in places. I hadn't seen it since college and was surprised at how many F-bombs they drop throughout. I really only remembered the one when the vice principal leaves the library after Bender gets two more months of detention and shouts it as the door slams. So many references/quotable lines from this, just like all John Hughes movies - such a classic. Surprised you don't recognize his name from his many other hits he either directed or wrote or both (Sixteen Candles, Uncle Buck, Pretty in Pink, Weird Science, Some Kind of Wonderful, Home Alone, Planes Trains & Automobiles, Mr Mom, Vacation, etc etc etc). The themes would definitely resonate a bit more had I watched in highschool but overall it still had a place of nostalgia to some degree of just highschool life. John Hughes is a name I've heard but literally had never seen a movie of his before so this is a journey!
To me the random happy,sad and random questions about life and stuff felt realistic to me just because they’re teenagers and unpredictable sometimes like honestly if someone said they had a flare gun in there locker honestly I know people including me will laugh but I would steal feel bad because it is sad but shocking at the same time it’s just something that makes you laugh even if it’s a serious matter, I feel like teenagers would do in a sense like laugh uncomfortably in serious situations to some degree
My high school actually had Saturday detention. It was called Saturday School, and it was in 4 hour increments. So if you had two Saturday schools you could either go for 4 hours one week and the next week or do both the same day so yeah it was 8 hours. You could do homework or just sit there. It was in the cafeteria. The worst though was in school suspension, you had to go to the separate classroom for the whole day instead of your classes and the desks were all up against the wall with dividers in between and you just had to sit quietly and do your assignments from your classes. It was sooooo long and boring.
Oh wow, that sounds brutal. Especially as a teen. The last place you want to be on Saturday is school. I guess it would make me smarten up a bit though or just get more crafty at evading detention. 😂

Judd nelson was in a movie prior to breakfast club where he's in a red suit from top to bottom carrying a transistor radio walking into a school. I've only seen a clip from it (from a video called How To Fall in Love with Judd Nelson). Apparently John Hughes saw Judd Nelson in that and wanted him to portray John Bender 😊
I was in high school when this movie came out it is a great representation of Our Generation.

I've always said, regarding this film, that, if you see it as a teen, you'll love it forever. If you see it after, you'll never appreciate it in the same way.

But glad you enjoyed it once! Throughout the decades, I've always loved the Ally Sheedy character, and still do.
My school tried Saturday school for about 3 months after this movie came out. Stopped it when there was push back from teachers not wanting to do it and realizing it wasn't stopping students like me from getting in trouble. For the 3 months I was in there every Saturday but 2. I was pretty much Bender.

The Vernon character is what happens when teachers remain in the profession too long. He probably started out a great teacher, but after dealing with students who really are problematic sucking up the staff's energy and occasional teachers who don't care and parents who care even less, he became the type of bully he'd been struggling with.
Teaching is a demoralizing career path.

Let me be clear, to when you said they should snitch on bender, as a genXer, you NEVER snitch. Only acceptable snitch would be on a sibling to the parental units (tho depends on infraction. The more serious the misdeed the more likely you are to NOT snitch), and MAYBE a bully but that usually would bite you in the ass. Other than that, never. And the 5 kids were meant to repesent everyone in their boxes and showing to venture out of that comfort zone and realize we have more in common with the other types than we think. Was that your first John Hughes film? If so, you def have to check out Planes, Trains, and Automobiles -- that might be the perfect comedy (and one of the few Hughes films that feels timeless and not locked in the 80s).
I've seen Ferris Bueller but I don't remember much and I have seen Planes, Trains and Automobiles but I was really young. I loved John Candy as a kid so that and Uncle Buck I'd watch but don't really remember either.

Thanks Jay, I love Breakfast Club mainly because I relate. I had detention and corporal punishment most days in high school, and I don't look back on it negatively. And yes peer pressure was a nightmare in the eighties, not that its any less now.

I remember having to go to school on a Saturday a few times.. 2 maybe 3 times. Where I'm from, back in the day it was called Saturday SAC.. if you had gotten in trouble during the week for something that didn't warrant a suspension this where you ended up for punishment.. some of your offenses could consis of either being insubordent, rude with a teacher, excessive tardiness or got into fight/tussle that didn't get too out of hand or broken up quickly.. you had to come to school on a Saturday like a normal school day during the week.. for us, we didn't sit in the Library, they had us in the Cafeteria and the teacher or diciplinary officer stayed there with us.. everyone sat at their own table, was to be quiet and was suppose to do school work for the duration.. we didn't do an essay.. if you didn't bring anything to work on, you were suppose to copy the dictionary.. I remember for me, I spent most of the time just drawing graffitti sketches and practicing my tagging alphabets.. there sure wasn't any weed circle therapy bonding sessions like the Breakfast Club.

As someone who went to junior high and high school in the 80’s this movie perfectly captures the cliques and what it was like. I don’t understand why younger people hate this movie and find it so problematic.
I haven't seen people say they hate this or that it's problematic but that seems weird to me as well.
I think this is a movie reminding us to imagine other people as being just as complex as we are ourselves and having their own turmoil and issues, especially those who are so different from us that we rarely otherwise interact with them. I think that message is even more true today, when we often tend to imagine people in other "tribes" as being a combination of stupid and/or evil, depending on what suits us better at the moment. I also think this movie should never be remade. The people who feel nostalgia for it will hate the remake for not scratching that itch, and the people who don't have any nostalgia for it won't care about a remake. Plus, if they remade it, it would have to have a more diverse cast. That's fine by me, but about 40% of the potential audience would hate that on principle and decide without ever seeing the film that the producers are woke and therefore stupid and/or evil.
As a person who served one, Saturday detentions are a thing. I don't even remember what i did, all i remember doing in it was reading my book

Back when we took our teens to see the underrated horror/sci fi film "The Faculty", I eliminated all the stereotypes from this movie (jock, princess, nerd, criminal, weirdo) to ferret out the one kid in their group who was probably the alien monster. Highly recommended!

Yes - we had school detention on Saturdays (getting in trouble at school didn't get you out of school). We also had summer school for those who were flunking and/or needing to make up school for other reasons. Mom used to send us to summer school just to keep us learning. So we'd go in the mornings and then walk up to the pool afterwards.
As far as serious to joking to serious - humor/joking is a defense mechanism. And just with all defense mechanisms, it can be healthy but also cross into unhealthy.
I joined a chess club. Got defeated in 4 moves. Never went back. Got detention once. For singing. AFTER THE BELL HAD RUNG. Guilt-tripped the teacher into letting me go ("my grandmother's outside waiting to take me clothes shopping! She needs me to see the labels!"). I was six.

I've thoroughly enjoyed your new reaction channel - sorry I got here a bit late (as usual). I watched TBC dozens of times in HS - recorded it on VHS off HBO as soon as it came to the home mkt and then wore that tape out. It holds a special place in my heart as it came out my sophomore year at a time when my parents were going through divorce and I was living alone for a bit and then with my grandmother. While some references are a bit dated, i think it still holds up pretty well given its universal and enduring themes (bullying, teen angst, peer pressure, etc). As you noted, most of the weirdness comes from the casual misogyny and following up heavy issues with punchlines (the gun/flare gun thing... though still funny). I got my rising 8th grader to watch it with me on the plane home from our recent trip, and she really liked it even though she, like you, thought it was weird in places. I hadn't seen it since college and was surprised at how many F-bombs they drop throughout. I really only remembered the one when the vice principal leaves the library after Bender gets two more months of detention and shouts it as the door slams. So many references/quotable lines from this, just like all John Hughes movies - such a classic. Surprised you don't recognize his name from his many other hits he either directed or wrote or both (Sixteen Candles, Uncle Buck, Pretty in Pink, Weird Science, Some Kind of Wonderful, Home Alone, Planes Trains & Automobiles, Mr Mom, Vacation, etc etc etc). Glad you finally watched it... and hope you take on more of his library. Peace!
The themes would definitely resonate a bit more had I watched in highschool but overall it still had a place of nostalgia to some degree of just highschool life. John Hughes is a name I've heard but literally had never seen a movie of his before so this is a journey!

To me the random happy,sad and random questions about life and stuff felt realistic to me just because they’re teenagers and unpredictable sometimes like honestly if someone said they had a flare gun in there locker honestly I know people including me will laugh but I would steal feel bad because it is sad but shocking at the same time it’s just something that makes you laugh even if it’s a serious matter, I feel like teenagers would do in a sense like laugh uncomfortably in serious situations to some degree
My high school actually had Saturday detention. It was called Saturday School, and it was in 4 hour increments. So if you had two Saturday schools you could either go for 4 hours one week and the next week or do both the same day so yeah it was 8 hours. You could do homework or just sit there. It was in the cafeteria. The worst though was in school suspension, you had to go to the separate classroom for the whole day instead of your classes and the desks were all up against the wall with dividers in between and you just had to sit quietly and do your assignments from your classes. It was sooooo long and boring.
Oh wow, that sounds brutal. Especially as a teen. The last place you want to be on Saturday is school. I guess it would make me smarten up a bit though or just get more crafty at evading detention. 😂
