Each of the five kids is being abused in some way, and they’re starting to act out those toxic behavior patterns towards their peers. By spending time together and letting down their guard, they’re slowly able to start seeing each other as real individuals rather than caricatures of their cliques. Those were the same cliques and the same abusive patterns that existed in pretty much every US high school in the eighties. Hughes captured it so perfectly.

"she likes him, but he's an asshole" -- every straight girl's problem, the cute bad boy. I love that you love Ally Sheedy's character. She didn't need a makeover imo. She was goth before her time.

    • @filmgirlLisa
      @filmgirlLisa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Yeah I always wonder whether Ally Sheedy needed a makeover but then I think a lot of girls in school were goth-ish but didn't really want to be bc they didn't know how to be like the "popular" ones. She got to be that for one day anyway.

"We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all."
Fun Fact: The scene in which all characters sit in a circle on the floor in the library and tell stories about why they were in detention was not scripted. Writer and director John Hughes told them all to ad-lib.
Iconic Defiance Fact: Judd Nelson improvised the part at the closing of the film where Bender raises his fist in defiance. He was supposed to just walk into the sunset, so to speak, and John Hughes asked him to play around with a few actions. When he was done and they were finishing up, Nelson threw his fist up without running it by anyone. Everyone loved it, and it has also become an iconic symbol of the 1980s as well as cinema history.
Music Enthusiast Fact: "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds, was written for the film by Keith Forsey. It was a number one hit for Simple Minds. Billy Idol and Bryan Ferry turned down offers to record it first (although in 2001, Billy Idol recorded a version as a bonus track for his Greatest Hits album). The song was also turned down by Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, who then suggested they offer it to the band fronted by her husband at the time, Simple Minds.

    • @danieldietrich9969
      @danieldietrich9969 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

To add to your music fact, Simple Minds also initially turned down the song because they didn't like the idea of recording a song they themselves didn't write. It is the only song of theirs that wasn't written by them. But they were eventually convinced to do the song.

The Breakfast Club came out the year after I graduated H.S. Those kids accurately represent the "cliques" and drama we had in school back then. That saying that the wrestler said "2 hits, me hitting you, you hitting the floor", was a very popular saying back then.

As a GenX’er, this movie, and it’s theme song, are basically the prime examples of the GenX (65-80) period. Being alive and unnoticed was the teenage angst of my generation. Many members of Generation X were latchkey kids with long hours of unsupervised, solitary time while single/both parents worked. We were the forgotten due to a change in traditional ideals, more women than ever joined the workforce and divorce increased dramatically, peaking in the United States during the late ’70s and early ’80s which lead to unprecedented incidence of broken homes, drug abuse, and record rates of teen suicide. The play-date, helicopter-parent, child-centered attitude of the Millennial era was a thing of the future. The social higher-achy clics in schools were the worst thing that could happen to a GenXer and this movie made it seem like there was always a chance to pull down the barriers. Ally Sheedy killed it in this movie!! As always, another outstanding reaction to a classic and one of the films I grew up with. Nothing but Love and Respect!

I’m a teacher and the students who are considered the “bad” kids love me. I listen to them, I let petty stuff go, I give second chances. Just last night I was at the mall by myself, ran into three of my students and I bought them sodas because they ran out of money and they were sharing a drink. Teachers like Vernon, as a colleague, I avoid like the plague. Every kid needs one adult who will believe in them. Bender would have loved my class.

And yas Jaaay! I love Allison too, btw! Kleptomania & dandruff-eating aside, she's pretty much me in HS loooool.
(My favorite little bit is that after mutliple viewings, you notice how Allison is the only one in there that Bender actually respects... he never harassed her, he spoke up for her when she clammed up at the teacher's probing, he passed her the soda because she was too far back, and mostly just left her alone 🤗 I really appreciate that and it's cool how all those moments were subtly shown to us.
He probably saw her going through similar challenges at home and at school like himself, so he treats her as if he gets it.)

Great choice for a reaction! John Hughes was in his mid-30s when he made this movie, and though he wasn’t a teenager in the 80s, he had a knack for communicating with and portraying us in a way that didn’t come off as condescending or out of touch. I came to realize that goes beyond us when I started to introduce this and some other of his movies to Gen Ys and Zs, and hearing that they felt like that as well.

It’s easy to say that Bender is just a big mouthed coward.
I think at one point that was my initial assessment.
Having seen this movie multiple times, and now viewing it as an adult:
I think that terrified look in his eyes at the moment Principal Vernon is threatening him is John’s PTSD kicking in from the abuse he suffers at home with his father, an adult figure who is supposed to be taking care of and watching out for him, and here is another one that is now in his face intimidating him, threatening harm. The look in his eyes at that moment, says he’s at home with his father all over again.

Maaaaan, comparing these average minor attitudes to personal crisis kids as if equal to the TRULY uncontrolled kids from TK to 12+ regular classrooms today...
      Not even close.
And if any Admin or teacher could not deal with the low-key bs of the 70s 80s 90s 00s and even into the 10s without turning toxic abd a threat- then NO they got no business working with kids.
      Today?
      Nah.
Last decade of changed rules and codes and parenting and the utter lack of even considering removing from regular classes of legit mentally incapable to psychotic kids magnifies the chaotic violent mess of public schools now.

What's scary about Vernon is that anyone can turn into him - probably faster now than 40 ago considering the decay of public education. You could enter the teaching profession with the highest ideals and dreams in the world, wanting to be a role-model to all the kids ... and after years of dealing with disruptive students, entitled parents, exhausted coworkers, and corrupt administrators/politicians/unions - you become your own worst enemy.

Love your emotional reaction to this film, and how it truly won you over by the end!
This gem has amazing writing, fantastic cast and an incredible director. It makes us laugh, but it’s really about the human experience and how we may be different, but we share similar experiences. We all have this human experience. And each one of us can relate to each other when we look.
It also does a good job of explaining what it feels like to be a teen and feel so invisible and misunderstood. How it seems as if adults forgot what it’s like to be young, but when you’re young you don’t know how to articulate that fact, despite seeing it for yourself in your own parents and the way they are oblivious to what or who you are.
It’s not a shock you’re going to rewatch this one. I go back to it all the time. It hits so many emotional beats and it almost never gets old.

It’s so nice to see you genuinely ENJOYING a movie again, with no violence and nothing nauseating (except a little spit and a weird lunch with a Pixie Stix/Captain Crunch on White Bread sandwich). There are many more movies with nothing upsetting or disgusting in them. I hope the next year finds you enjoying those movies.

I was 12 years old when this movie was released, and it became an instant favorite of mine. I've seen it more times than I can count. I know so many people my age (myself included) who can recite the lines right along with the movie. We saw ourselves and our peers in this film in one way or another. Like you said, each character was a real person. John Hughes was the father of teen movies in the 80s. I think you'll like most of his library. Great reaction, great channel! Love watching you!

"I need her to get more camera time. She's weird, but I like her!"
Ally Sheedy is the best character, and doesn't say a word until 'Vodka'...
For more of 80's Ally - Short Circuit and Only The Lonely. She's adorable.
She's also great in the underrated 1990 Fear (not the one with Marky Mark)

Great reaction. All these characters remind me of specific people I went to high school with. A great film you'd really like about a different era if high school students graduating and their last night of summer is George Lucas's AMERICAN GRAFFITI (1973). There's also the excellent 1982 film FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH.

One of my favorites, so glad you reacted to it. I classified myself as a nerd in high school but I talked to many different cliques. Didn't have the school shooting problems back then, from bullying. Communication is the issue; not just in schools, but work as well. Many students just take it in, instead of talking to a superintendent. That person needs to listen and make actual action. I was bullied, but had a great superintendent to resolve issues. She cared and had us all talk, together. She made it clear that I didn't say it was that student that was bullying me.
It was bad; not being able to get a job, as every place required me to be 18. No heat during the winter and power going out, constantly. My mom was stressed with her job and upset with my grades. Multiple times of thinking, 'maybe I shouldn't be here. My mom is upset and others want me gone.' Suicide isn't the answer, neither is shooting. It will get better.

(Graduated 2014 for reference) I started high school like Brian and left like a hybrid between Bender and Brian. I was still a nerd but I stopped caring, skipped, drugs, drank all the fun stuff to keep me alive. Still passed every class with an A or B except for math and foreign language. I got sent to the principal's office one time for smiling at a teacher. we had a stare-down, he told me to put the Ipad away so I closed it but did not put it away and looked up at him, said nothing, and just smiled. We stared at each other and the whole class was silent, you could hear a pin drop, after a few seconds he asks if I thought this was funny so I smiled bigger and he told me to get out
