    "The Art of Bop Drumming" by John Riley is in my top 3 method books of all time. If jazz drumming is something you either do or plan on doing buy that book now. Riley is a master that can also communicate well, a rare and priceless thing. Thanks for this video!

      I'm sure one of them is syncopation for the modern drummer

    • @rhythmetist
      @rhythmetist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@dwarselars Yes, Jose Perez is right : Ted Reed's "Syncopation" book is a gold mine, but unlike John Riley's books Syncopation requires a teacher to guide you through it to get the full value. Riley's books on the other hand are expertly written, just follow directions and you are set. For a third book it depends on where you want to go with your playing: if you want a well rounded approach Jimmy Branly's "New Method for Afro-Cuban Drumming" is excellent. But if you want to focus all on swing then I recommend Riley's 2nd book "Beyond Bop Drumming" which has, among other things, excellent left foot patterns that will free up all 3 limbs to creatively comp against your ride cymbal ostinato.

    • @rileyjohnriley
      @rileyjohnriley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The ride is a 22 K Constantinople that Henry Cole picked at the factory and he decided it wasn't for him but he thought I would like it so he gave it to me and I do. The 20 is also a K Con that Paul Francis made for me based on an older 20 K Con I've been playing at the Vanguard for years. Glad you like them.

    • @jamarathonpolygon7735
      @jamarathonpolygon7735 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think that all great players could definitely feather if they wanted to, but a lot of players, especially in the mid-60s and later, didn’t always do it.

    • @YanickDrums
      @YanickDrums 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me being able to play faster then i have to helps alot. For example playing a 16th note groove with 1 hand at 90 bpm i get it up to 95 bpm and that helps to make 90 bpm alot more fomcortable to play at, even fills and stuff.

      Hey Kyle
      All mics used in this video are Beyerdynamic microphones..
      The individual mics are: M99TG on the bassdrum, M201 on the snare, 2x M160 as overheads and another M160 to support the floortom.
