This is literally the first song I learned "for real" and because of that it's also the song I first practiced ghost notes with (a lot). I play guitar as my first instrument, 20 years almost. But I started to drum a little over 6 years ago and Fool in the Rain was not a good first song but it was a great first song at the same time.
Soul Vaccination and Oakland Stroke by the Tower Of Power are really great for learning ghost notes/accent patterns. David Garibaldi is the master of the ghost notes :)
One of THE most ignored ghost note grooves is in Boz Scaggs' "Miss Sun". Many will mention "Fool in the Rain" or "Rosanna" in most conversations and rarely -- if ever -- bring up "Miss Sun" in a discussion. The ghost note placement and use is so subtle and sublime, many who've listened to the song for decades are amazed when they listen for the ghost notes. Don't believe me? Check out anyone doing a drum cover of the song. No one gets the ghost notes right or don't play them at all. And it is this subtlety that causes it to slip under even seasoned drummers' radars. And who is the drummer of this gem? None other than the virtuosity himself, Jeff Porcaro. Note: Even Jeff Pocaro doesn't get Jeff Pocaro's ghost notes right. Toto does a cover of "Miss Sun" where he doesn't play the song quite the same.
A quick throw out track I recommend for learning, is always gunna be the 2nd track(first actual song after the intro) from limp bizkits significant other.john Otto is a killer groove player. That tracks more basic but any level drummer could benefit from locking that beat down to 100%
If you listen to Alanis morrissette's live version of "hand In my pocket" in Paris 96 Taylor Hawkins on the drums does a great job...great ghost notes. I didn't even know he played for her b4 the Foo till I saw that video. He does an amazing version of that song into the 2nd verse deff changes it up for the better! Check it out!
Andi, very nice video , great instruction. I play "ghost" notes without even realizing it :):) But not as good as you. I'm watching many YT videos to hone my drumming abilities. I am 70 yo retired guy, a resurrected drummer after 50 years (1969), who learned basically by ear (alright, I had maybe 8 lessons in 1966). I have been "practicing" for about an hour a day , playing to My Music. As another poster so eloquently stated... Miss Sun, Fool In the Rain, and Rosanna are great examples of Ghost Note playing. There are few others that don't fully come to mind right now (Doobie Bros. songs), but it is apparent that the strokes are Moeller strokes which I never practiced nor was that stroke technique instructed way back when. I intend to give this Ghost Note playing a whirl. THX again for your time to make this video. Happy Drumming All. PS... For Reference to the Young folks out there, in my day, after first learning the basic Jazz and Rock beats, it became a passion to pursue Syncopation. My Fav drummers in no specific order: Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Jon Bonham {I can't touch him], Dino Danelli [Rascals, check him out form his early days], Steely Dan's Drummer, Allman Bros Drummer, Steve Gaad (I didn't know who he was playing for Paul Simon and others, until recently, Kenny Aronoff [John Mellencamp], Charlie Watts , Ringo and so many others.
OH Sorry! The song with the ghost note groove is called "Never Land" by Marillion - See the "live" studio version. Both songs "Estonia" & "Never Land" are awesome!
Yes because what the world wants and needs right now is more programmed drums. So glad you're spending your practice time doing something a computer program can do automatically now. Such a useful skill to have, must be why every single song these days has the same programmed beats. Because they are just THAT GOOD!!! Groove, feel and pocket are for the birds what I really want is ultra quantization. So inspiring......
"Fool in the Rain" by Led Zeppelin is another great half-time shuffle with ghost notes.
Definitely!

Love it!
Good call!!! I actually practice to that song all the time
Do you play a paradiddle on the breakdown or a paradiddle diddle?
the shuffle triplet groove has baffled me for some time now.. thanks for spelling it out.!
The Purdie Shuffle! Check out Bernard Purdie’s breakdown on this, you won’t regret it
that break down at the 9:00 minute helps so much
What a fantastic setting/background you have! Really cool, as is your lesson. Thanks!
Soul Vaccination and Oakland Stroke by the Tower Of Power are really great for learning ghost notes/accent patterns. David Garibaldi is the master of the ghost notes :)
YES
Oakland Stroke is mad hard though
I play ghost notes all the time. A few people have commented on how cool it is, but I mainly use them as a crutch to help me keep time 😏
Best ghost note lesson I’ve ever have. Answered every question I have with all the ghosts note grooves. Thanks a lot !
Yeah! Thanks for yout feedback.
Great to hear you liked it.
David Garibaldi is legendary when it comes to ghost notes.
Jeff Porcaro on Al Jerreau's Breaking Away is sublime!!
The guitar really locks with the ghost notes. Almost overpowers them in the mix. Bring Porcaro up!👍
@@DNixon845 It is quite subtle but the dynamics are also very consistent. I dig it though.
The groove from Snowblind by Black Sabbath is one of my favorite grooves utilizing ghost notes
excellent, you sound great

Excellent reply
Awesome! Love the muffled tone. Gonna check out the platform!

Ian Mosley of Marillion ghost note groove on the song "Estonia" is one of my favorites to share with everyone.

I have been into ghost notes since 1980. My teachers have been Bernard Purdie, Jeff Porcaro and John Bonham.
Man. I’m callin’ the ghost busters.
The lesson I've been looking for
Great lesson!!!
Thank u very much.
The snare sounds sweet(:
Thank you!

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. Happy you got something out of this video! Have fun playing around with those ideas.
My best ghost notes are when I miss the backbeat! Lol 😆. Great video!
Good Material Bro... Keep Posting. Thanks..
I hear the Rosanna shuffle from the beginning of the video
Bei dem Akzent dachte ich mir doch schon das es ein Deutscher sein muss👌🏼 weiter so👌🏼💪🏼
Thanks for that great instructional video, very helpful. Regards, Bob M. South Wales
GREAT. THANKS!
Amazing video! Could u guys do a drum sound series with George Daniel from 1975?
Deftones have some of my favorite ghost note drum beats, check out digital bath
Bad dreams by phantogram. Currently learning that beat!
Excelente video !’n🙏🙏
Well taught maestro!

Srsly.. he popularized it in the first place.
Excellent 👌
OH Sorry! The song with the ghost note groove is called "Never Land" by Marillion - See the "live" studio version. Both songs "Estonia" & "Never Land" are awesome!
Damn you’re good 👍
Favorite grooves with ghost notes? Jungle grooves at 160-180 bpm
I’ve never heard someone say, “Your ghost notes are too soft.”
this video is very instructive simply to just program better drums
😊

I just "buzz" the snare . Even easier with "tradicional" grip
what model hats please?, I've got K 16" light but there is a tiny bit of dirt to these which I really dig,
Simply check the video description for the complete equipment list 👍🏻 Those are 14“ Avedis Hats
Ian Mosley de Marillion - Sounds that can´t be made
Hi. What’s that beautiful blue set behind?
That‘s a Pearl President Deluxe kit.
We also did a review video about this one here: th-cam.com/video/4dbZyiVhy5Y/w-d-xo.html 👍🏻
Nice! Hey what hats are you using? thx.
Zildjian Kerope in 15“
What is the ring and cloth on your snare?
On the Rosanna groove he missed the Bo Diddley stomp on the last BD note...Da Da Da Da Da
7:03 got this from yussef dayes
Do you change the hand positions for the hi hat figures?
Thanks.
Depending on the figure i switch between french and german grip yes. It depends if I want to use my fingers or play the figure with my wrist 👍🏻
You used the vulfpeck kit didn't ya?
The best!
Yes 😄
We liked the setting and the kit so much that we had to film another video with it 👍🏻
@@ArtOfDrumming One day if you teach us how to play drum and bass, use the funky drummer kit!
Deal!
Rosanna?
Alguien de esta comunidad me ayudaria a encontrar ese muteador que tiene el redoblante?? por favor
How did you do the fill on 1:23?
Hope you notice my comment
Hey Andi, I don't think you got a big enough pillow for that kick. Maybe go for obscenely large next time. /s
What is on the snare??
I second this question, I like the sound of the snare. What is the black and white plaid circle over your snare head?
It’s a muffin made by mr muff. mistermuff.de/shop/muffin-set/
@@ArtOfDrumming lol
Got a big enough pillow lol
It would be useful, if you put notation there.
That into sounds familiar.
It’s Rosanna by Toto
@@ChiefCast i think he meant another intro 😂
Why am I hearing ph intro at the begining xD
Good question 😄
Did not play that one 🤷🏼♂️
the hihat is a Kerope and not an Avedis as described
Right, our fault Kerope 15“
“Detroit Rock City” uses ghost notes well…
👍🏻💯
And Parasite!
@@CrazyLG72 how stupid of me !! Love that song and you’re right ! Big time !
@@JoeyP322 glad to hear from another Kiss fan!
GOT MUFFLING?
sounds good though!! :)
ghost notes are notes that are stroked but not played. it comes from drum corps. they are GRACE NOTES. my goad that snare sounds like ass.
I have never seen a bass drum so stuffed with pillows before.
