  • Here, I'm demonstrating a very rare example of a 1966 Sola Sound Mk 1.5 Tonebender. This model was only made for a few months in the one year, so original items are very hard to come by. This one belonged to my Grandad that he had from new. Audibly, it is similar to a Fuzz Face. If you compare the two to amplifiers, the Fuzz Face has the 'American' sound (big low end with mids held back) while the Tonebender has a more present, honky midrange and a tighter low end, similar to the British amps of the day.
Certainly a unique and wonderful box. I hope you enjoy this demonstration!

I agree with you on most counts, but I don't hear any Solasound MKII Tonebender on the second album, but it is indeed the main lead tone on key parts of the first album ("Dazed..." and "HMMT"). Rhythm sounds seem to be the amp sound and of course various solos on Zep I did not use the Tonebender at all. The second album is, to my ear, mainly Vox UL7120 and it's built in fuzz (on 'WLL") and Marshalls ("Bring It On Home", "WIAWSNB", etc.).

My dream pedal...There is something unique about the '66 versions, whether 1.5 or MKII. I'm convinced Page's Yardbirds and Zep I Tonebender(s) were likely '66 1.5 or MKII. I know for a fact that Alan Parker used a Tonebender purchased in 1966 from Macari's on the "Hurdy Gurdy Man" electric lead and rhythm and yours definitely has the flavor of that. Very nice.

Great demo video of an awesome sounding pedal. Sad that you had to sell it when it was passed to you by your grandfather

There are 4 parts that differ in value between a fuzz face and a Sola MK 1.5, and really, they don't contribute to much. Some of these changes are 100% unnoticeable. On paper, the Sola MK 1.5 should have a bit more bass, as the input cap is bigger, but that's assuming the smaller cap on the FF isn't already letting all of the guitar signal through (it basically is, iirc).
The one described in the video as having "more mids" sounds like the Vox Tonebender. The Vox one is the one that has a much smaller capacitors, which lowers the bass, which makes is sound as if it has more mid-range. That one would definitely have noticable bass cut.
The Sola and FF though? Practically the same. Some builds show them sounding absolutely identical.
The germanium lottery will have plenty to do with the sound as well, though. Different batches of transistors will have different gain and leakage....even one pedal within a company can vary in sound. It's never ending with GE fuzzes!

Some of the early Fuzz Faces actually came with 5μF input caps, and some of the earlier MK1.5's (e.g. the unit in this video) actually came with 500kΩ level pots. The MK1.5 and the Fuzz Face are much more similar than most people assume :)

... nice observation garbeaj... The 7120 is a cool amp ... think it was the Paperback Writer fuzz amp too. Impressive w/ it's hybrid circuit (later found in Music Man amps of the '70s) .. extremely rare & pricey though...

... the light & spitty low-end fuzz of this particular model Tonebender nails that Zep I & II sound. I hate the fact most guitarists generally don't hear that characteristic & tend to use the heavier, higher-gain silicon Fuzz-Face/Big Muff boxes to play early Zep... but they're idiots anyway...
