- South African president Cyril Ramaphosa’s African peace mission to Ukraine and Russia has begun on a sour note. Ramaphosa's head of security Major General Wally Rhoode has accused the Polish government of “racism and sabotage.”
Gen. Rhoode accused the Polish authorities of holding up the plane carrying the South African president’s security detail, media contingent and weapons. He said that Ramaphosa’s security detail and journalists were not allowed to disembark from the South African Airways (SAA) A340 chartered plane.
While the security plane remained stuck, Ramaphosa disembarked, met the Polish President Andrzej Duda and left for south Poland on his official plane.

Get the facts straight. They had valid passports & visas so were free to disembark. The problem was all the weapons they had on board did not have required paperwork to take into Poland. But they refused to leave their weapons on the aircraft. Their suffering was self inflicted.

The BBC reported about 120 people, security and media, on the aircraft. It would be interesting to know how the size of that retinue stacks up against those of other leaders who have visited Ukraine. When we send our Australian PM off to bother other countries we usually just give him a packed lunch and some cheap aftershave for self-defence.

There were hazardous materials on board the plane, which the South African representatives did not have permission to bring in. In addition, there were persons on board the plane who had not been previously notified to the Polish side. The South African side was informed of all necessary formalities for the delegation's entry into Poland and the required transport permits.

I only got the South African perspective. There is nothing on the Polish news channels (that I can find). As a Pole living in Poland, I trust the border police to have followed their procedures correctly. I hope that they translated their permits into Polish, which is the official language here.
