Fantastic DIY video. Thanks for the detail and fast-forwarding through the actual work when the detail was unnecessary. Steve makes it look very easy too.
My father's a carpenter and I've been at a realty company that puts little time towards ensuring a products comes out properly. It's refreshing to see all the plotting and stages of work here. I actually like to use the screw method to hold things myself.
Thank you, our philosophy is to explore all different options and do the best to install them properly. VIM has a solid product, the prep is very important
I bought a 60" X 42" TileRedi shower-pan with a linear drain that's on a short end on the long end is the CURB (I should have kept my mouth shut) but I had to brag to my little princess! Now she's decided that I want a curbless walk-in shower! Now I'm hoping you would be so kind as to assist me in this endeavor? By the way I have several subscriptions to different u-tub channels, but I was so impressed by your vidios that lm going to purchase a 65" LG TV.
The VIM system looks like a good quality shower pan. I like the way Steve reinforced the floor and how the shower pan is screwed down and thinseted around the perimeter and drain. Very well supported.
Yes, the VIM pan isn't going anywhere...unless the house shifts. Once the pan and bathroom floor are waterproofed this system is super solid, looks very much like a swimming pool
So a case study in why to use Schlueter, respect for the meticulous work but my God is this an involved and labour intensive process. Have you switched to Schlueter yet?
Wish I had this a year ago! I used the trudeck arc system which is similar. I’m a dyier in Cleveland. The carpenters tips are great. What about the rest of the subfloor being level? Did you use self leveling? That’s the problem I had. I ended up jus t using vinyl for the floor and using a transition strip to the shower pan. I didn’t want to install the tile on a uneven subfloor. The pan I got exactly level. . Not exactly no curb but still pretty good and solid
Had this floor not been level we would have self-leveled it or adjusted the joists using the sister method, similar to what was done in the shower area.
What’s the smallest dimension bathroom that you think you could fit a curbless shower? I have a half bath id like to add a shower in to. Traditional shower wouldn’t fit but thinking curbless could
I want to use use system. I'm gonna lay new ceramic tiles over existing ceramic floor. So would i be bringing this pan up flush to existing floor right.
Would realy like to do a curbless waterproof bathroom like this but can i build my own pan with oatley? How would that be done. Does the felt go over the oatley instead of 2 inches of mortor?
Not trying to be negative, but dang I hope the owner addressed the incorrectly installed insulation in the walls! It's like there's nothing there near the studs. If this is an exterior wall, expect condensation in the wall which will lead to mold.
Truedeck pan was crazy expensive! prefab presloped fiberglass pan for over 1k! But, it worked because of the mechanicals underneath the shower so we were unable to lower the subfloor. Great video by the way!
Question Can you simply install the curbless shower pan on top of the existing plywood floor in the shower area , and raise the floor outside the shower area to meet the pan
With a tub to shower conversion I assume that after the tub is removed the old PVC tub drain would have to be moved to the center by a plumber before this pan/system could be used?
I just had someone completed my shower room. But it come out different what I wanted . I don't know how discribe it. I am frustrated because what I want curbless walk in shower but it out different.
Great system. I’m going to use it for my DIY. I would like to use the ditra heat floor heating on the entire floor. And just for leveling purposes, the shower too. Any thoughts as where in the process to add the ditra heat? Straight to the sub floor and shower pan? Thanks!!
Just to clarify, the VIM pan is pitched for proper water drainage, so it shouldn’t be level. That said, if you want to use Ditra-Heat in that shower we recommend contacting VIM.
He didn’t. He recessed the additional supporting so that when he cut out the plywood pieces (the inlays) it all matched up to the existing Joyce nice and even....
Much easier to do a conventional shower floor, I think. This looks like a real pain in the arse. I don't think I'd trust that drain arrangement to not leak.
The beveled edge of the caulkless gasket goes down into the matching beveled PVC cup! Then the square threaded ring gets tightened down to squeeze & expand the rubber against the pipe & cup drain.
@@HomeRepairTutor I am a contractor and if my next quote is for curbless, I will definitely consider this system. BTW how is the pricing of this system?
VIM is on par with other systems, slightly better in some respects. Our next video will show how to waterproof the pan and walls. Hydro Ban Board was used for this installation and we really liked it. That also is competitively priced and fast to install
@@businessman5894 it should pass but double check your local codes. All Curbless showers require either recessed dimensional lumber or a recess kit so that you can add your 3/4” plywood flush with the joists. From there, add your tray then backer boards and waterproof according to the manufacturer specs
OK I plan on using the VIM curb-less shower system for a new bathroom -- But has anyone used this system in a HOME LAUNDRY AREA ? My laundry area will be build on the second floor and I want to have a protection system in case of a water accident.... Would a VIM shower base work under or near the washer and dryer? IF they are a stacked unit, would the weight of the stacked Washer/Dryer be too much on the VIM materials and ceramic tile? Anyone?? I sent the question to VIM but they never reply?
I do tons of showers! 1. How much is the curbles pan kit... ( currently watching video) 2. I dont do any of the plumbing work ( other than the drain) do I need a plumbing license to install shower valves??
I was thinking about installing it in my RV travel trailer but I think I’ll make my own out of plywood and Self-leveling Epoxy I have a wheel well I have to come off the wall about 7 inches down 4 inches down to the drain And I could do a lot cheaper But I like what you do but for an RV/travel trailer you don’t have much of a choice I want a bigger So I’m getting rid of the sink so all that will be in there is a shower and toilet. But when I do my house again someday I’ll think about it
Cutting the factory edges going in towards the drain may be necessary for the tray to fit into your shower floor dimension. The problem I see in doing this is that you create a "smiley face" shaped edge instead of having that nice flat, level edge. Your wall tile cuts at the floor will have to be curved to shape that "smiley face" also. This needs to be remedied
Gee, this looks like it's more trouble than doing it the conventional way with a floated pre-sloped bed of mortar, vinyl liner, then floating the final floor. It's not hard.
I cringe every time I see him use his THIGH as the support for his circular saw. NOT safe people! A trip to the emergency room is expensive and time consuming.
the point wasn't to emphasize the shower draining to a 3" or 4" pipe, it's that the drain cover is larger than typical covers. Plumbing codes require certain size pipes, so most people are constrained by that. As far as the used car salesman, you're implying we somehow deceived people. That's simply not the case, we do our best to explain what we like about different systems. And if you notice, we discuss many shower systems from Schluter, Wedi, KBRS, VIM, etc. Education is important and since we don't make shower systems we try to share all the different ones so people can then decide which is best for them.

I wished I’d would have used a nailer the screws kept sucking the 2xs out of level. Probably was doing it wrong.

Shouldn't that subfloor be primed before thinnest?

Really great vid!
The water doesn't migrate out to the bathroom floor?
I would preassemble the framing around the drain and lay in space 3/4” below joist tops as one unit. Easier to assemble and install.

Does this system (pan) require addition supporting, or alternate leveling with engineered joist?
Would Kerdi Board be a product you could use in place of the Hydro Ban Board in Ontario Canada when we can't buy this product?

is this possible to do with a right side drain?

He recessed the additional supporting so that when he cut out the plywood pieces (the inlays) it all matched up to the existing Joyce nice and even....
