28 yrs in the trades and it’s always refreshing to see the artistry of a professional that enjoys his craft.
Cutting studs at different lengths for longer spanning repairs to avoid a hinge joint is a REALLY GOOD TIP. Always learn a lot with your content. I will try, if my older brain can do it, to file that one away.

Thank you. This video gave a visual to a customer who wasn't understanding why I would have to lower the subfloor to install a curbless shower. Saved my bid and let them see that the other bidders were actually not going to solve the problem at hand.
That's a unique solution to the flooring. You have just proved that nobody has a monopoly on great ideas.
When this is all done, see if mom won't get you a pair of pants that hasn't been mended in the posterior. You deserve that ... and a hug, you deserve that too!
Climbing into attics is why you hang onto and mend those workpants, so you don't create a new pair with a hole as well!

That dewalt oscillating tool is by far one of the most useful and versatile tools I own. It just makes many jobs way easier.
I regret not buying one when they where on sale a couple months ago for 99$
When I first got into DIY I never thought the oscillating tool would be the most useful and versatile item in my toolbox. It's genuinely a lifesaver.
The Dewalt Oscillating tool has become a real go to tool for me. It is a must have for doing any remodeling. I just wish blades weren't so dang expensive; and that they lasted longer.
@@chuckburns3633 Try Harbor Freight or Grizzly for those. If you are just going for wood blades they can be gotten for about $6-$8 each. They aren't as good as the Fein blades for $16-$20 each, but almost so. Also try buying them in bulk. The expensive ones dull when you hit metal just like the cheap ones do, so why spend more? When it's important I always use a new one anyway and save the old ones for non-important cuts.
I’ve been in the business for nearly 20 years and I still watched the full video. I like that you considered plywood in joist bays to gain more integrity in the framing 👌🏼

I work in mold remediation and I can say there is a big difference between mold (growth) and staining. Often times what people think is mold is simply water stains. The only way to know for sure is to have it tested.

When I used to do jobs like this ,I got more satisfaction from the re-framing than the finished product. Had that same feeling looking at the stud's work !

My other weekness is starting to be my body…but I bought 2 cnc machines and learning that so I can keep pushing.
I love the way you walk us through seemingly impossible situations. With rot like that I would have given up and called in the pros, but you take us step-by-step through the how and the why of the repair.
No idea if it's too late - having had an elderly parent live with me - as they get to a point where they need assistance in a shower, a hand-held shower head for the Carer to use on the patient, is key! I put both a fixed and 'head on a hose' with a diverter tap. So when she was having a good day she could do it herself and when she had a bad day the carer could shower her.
And it always makes cleaning the shower easier!

The wall is definitely a good choice. More surface area for grab bars, yet still enough room to get a chair in and out. I’m a contractor & CNA. I really like your positivity and flow of delivery. Good video!
I get a feeling that Stud Pack is happiest when he is framing. Those pro tips on the hinge effect and pressure treated vs kiln dried lumber were pure gold! Great job as always.

This reminds me of my grandpa and I. He had the same positive demeanor as you both and taught me so much. He passed a couple years ago but as I remodel my kitchen I find myself wishing I could ask him questions and this channel has been nothing but an amazing resource. You two are awesome!

Really like the shower valve on the opposite wall from the shower head! No more getting wet turning on the shower. Pretty slick
And mum can't accidentally grab it for stability and unintentionally turn the temperature up!

Lots of work in a short time! Great job on the floor design! At 91,im certain that "Mom" will appreciate the privacy the wall gives, and glass won't allow you to add any grab bars if needed.

a solid half wall (with glass covering the other half) would allow grab bars and prevent the door from hitting the glass.

That's a great idea and you even made the new subfloor event stronger the previous floor, This is a excellent idea for updating a kitchen or bathroom floor where a lot of weight is placed and you need the extra strength.

Definitely always best practice to remove damaged materials but On some applications the minwax penetration wood rot prevention is a option. Once it’s scraped out apply let dry and epoxy into area rot free if hard to reach areas - scab on a block to finish off -

A tip from a non pro - ditch all the blades and get Diablo everything. They cut like butter and last forever. Even when you hit nails with that circular saw. Multi tool, saws, everything. They’re worth it.

Liked and subscribed. This *exact* project is what my parents need in their home, but I don't have the skills to take it on. However, after watching this, when I hire someone to do it, I know I'm going to be armed with the right knowledge to make sure that my parents get a safe and quality walk-in shower. Back in the day, my must see Saturday morning viewing was a PBS broadcast titled "This Old House". For anyone redoing a bathroom, making the shower future ready is a great idea. It just take a small event for plans to change. If a shower is already ready at the house, it makes the transition that much easier. Great work guys!
There was nothing New for me in this video, but it has been half a century since I last did any framing. A Review is always nice. I don't remember what I had for supper yesterday, however, it's nice to remember how I did my work in my teens.

Thank you. I’m glad I found your channel. I’m 61 and I plan on buying an older house when I retire in two years. I don’t like bathtubs, so one thing I’m sure I’ll need to do is convert a tube into a shower.
I would have cut out the sheetrock for the top "plate." that way you have wood to wood framing which is much more shear resistant than having the sheetrock gap, and it makes it really easy to spot where you need the nailer. AND you can pass the nailer up through the hole.
I watch many, many videos. This is my favorite video. I am a master plumber of over 40 years. I learned volumes from this video. Great presentation and great cinematography! Keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for mentioning the walk in tub filling/draining issues, as this is often overlooked. We looked into those tubs when we first ran into some health and mobility issues with my mom (and she’s only 70!); the dealer kept calling and trying to pressure us into buying one for over 2 years. We’re doing a completely off grid home so water and energy conservation is a key area, and we won’t even have city pressure levels. I’m looking at having to set up a dual system with on demand propane hot water for summer and a water jacket and tank system off a wood cook stove for winter.
Agreed! the physics of just how much water those things use and how long it takes to fill is glossed over (or ignored) during sales pitches. This curbless shower is a MUCH better option! There's a big business ripping out those expensive walk-in tubs and replacing with regular showers.

@@yvongauthier4409 sorry I can’t find it, there’s a lot of comments! It’s good to know they are improving, but we will be running on rainwater catchment with a very, very small off grid plumbing system. 12v RV pump… we had planned for a bigger system initially, but life happens and things change.

My comment about "My Mom she needs it simple", is that seniors need hand held sprayers for hard to reach areas and it needs to be an uncomplicated "turn this, move that, step here" procedure. Ideally controls should be placed about the same general height as the mixing valve as they can get vertigo from looking up/down.

Stud Pack you guys keep rockin' it! Keep up the great videos, great instruction, great tips, AND great "projects". Your remodels are almost always in the "practical" realm for DIY folks: attacking common "problems" that "we" want (or need) to attack also. Your instructional style keeps it moving quickly but still pauses to cover the key details very clearly, not only explaining HOW you do certain things but WHY. Hats off to your editing that blasts through the slow and repetitive stuff!

Good for you mentioning the ADA standards and especially the space required for a wheelchair to turn around. When you build the ramp for your mom that is another opportunity to share some important information.

Hey Studpack. I worry about your eyes. You both should be wearing the correct tint safety glasses when using lasers. Even low powered green lasers are strong enough to do damage.

Any reduction in strength of the floor joists by reducing their depth is more than compensated for by the members provided to each side to support the floor panels. Love the work you do.
Is that true? I would think that the only added strength related to those members comes from the sheer strength of the screws holding those boards. If the screws break, the boards fall to the ground. Therefore the boards themselves provide no support to fight against gravity, no?
@@m.zehner7145 the boards were also extended to the frame of the house on the far end as well for support, but very good questions.
They put ledger boards, if there’s a leak to rust the screws there’s bigger problems.

Instructions unclear. I built my shower without curbs and my neighbors car drove into it because there was nothing stopping them.
If you are not into construction you should think about starting a new career. You’ve already got the sense of humor lol I’m sure the trades would love to have you.
Thank you for sharing this. I’m actually having a curbless ADA shower built in my 1/2 bath & closet now. Knowing about what all goes into this is really helpful. Mine is underneath the staircase & next to the under stairs compartment so yes lots of things being moved around & relocated such as doors, plumbing & electrical.
