- Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) - Piano Trio no.2 in C-Major, op.87
1. 00:15 - 09:38 Allegro
2. 09:50 - 18:16 Andante con moto
3. 18:30 - 23:00 Scherzo. Presto - (Trio). Poco meno presto
4. 23:05 - 28:45 Finale. Allegro giocoso
Brahms wrote the first movement of this piano trio in 1880, and finished the other movements in summer of 1882. Neighboring works are the Piano Concerto no.2 op.83 and the first String Quintet op.88, among others. When Clara Schumann heard Brahms perform his op.87, she noted: "...unfortunately, his own playing is not much anymore but grappling, pushing and shoving." She particularly disliked the first movement and had doubts about its structure and the sheer mass of ideas, many of which seemed to be left undeveloped.
With its melancholic slow movement with Hungarian undertones, its darkly hushed Scherzo and humorous and brilliant Finale, the C-Major Trio op.87 has become a favorite of many audiences since.

The passionate spirit of Brahms comes alive in this stunning performance. Though I’m familiar with this piece, their interpretation was as revealing as it was exciting. Most enjoyable. Thank you!
Is anyone supposed to care what Clara Schumann thought of this unsurpassed masterpiece?
Since she and Brahms loved each other with great passion, as I'm sure you well know, so I expect he cared very deeply for her profound comments and insight. One musical genius in dialogue with another.

This is classy musicianship and very artistic and informed playing. What a treat.
Particularly in the first movement, one often feels that Brahms is alternating passionately forged and inventive melodies, with almost satirical quotes of Schumann-esque or Schubertian frivolities. Brahms the ironist, as well as Brahms the titanic romantic and formal genius.
Thank you for this exemplary performance!

atos + brahms = gute laune !!! ( phantastischer brahms-pianist ! )
Fin musik verkligen!
bravo....I listened this morning while kneeding bread dough

Love the Scherzo
This is wonderful. I love Brahms' piano trios but was unfamiliar with this one (came here from the TwoSet Violin manuscript sight reading video to hear what this trio really sounded like). It grabbed my attention right from the start. I'm by no means an expert but I'd love to be able to play my piano with 1/10th the skill of these musicians. Thank you for posting!
I'm from Two Set, too. I came here because of Brett's recommendation. So glad I did. Now I want to learn this beautiful piano part and hope to meet a cellist and violinist to play it with someday. :)
Deeply fall in Love.
My god that cellist is phenomenal!
