Drinking from the Firehose with Howard Bloom

  • It’s easier in some ways to say what Howard Bloom isn’t than what he is. He’s not dull, for starters. Talking to him gave me the same sense of drinking from a fire hose that I experienced talking to Camille Paglia, who is one of the only people I have ever met who could give him a run for his money for sheer verbal fluency. He’s not someone whose existence you could believe in him if he wasn’t real, either. In fact, when I first heard about him, I thought “there’s just no way all those things can be true.”
    But they are.
His first and longest lasting love has been science. At sixteen, he worked as a research assistant studying the immune system at the Roswell Park Memorial Research Cancer Institute. While attending NYU, he edited an art magazine, to substantial critical acclaim, then an underground rock magazine (even though he knew very little, to begin with, about rock), and then head of public relations at ABC, working for Simon & Garfunkel, Michael Jackson, the Talking Heads, AC/DC, and Bob Marley (among many others). In 1985 the acts he handled grossed a third of a billion dollars.
He’s also cofounded and chaired the Asian Space Technology Summit and serves on the board of the National Space Society.
We talked about many things: the perils of his isolated childhood, his severe bout of chronic fatigue syndrome, his interest in ecstatic collective experiences - and we barely scratched the surface.
    He’s written six books:
How I Accidentally Started the Sixties (2017): an autobiographical work charting a decade of revolution and chaos: Amazon USA (amzn.to/2jDbZnd); Amazon Can (amzn.to/2i723lk)
The Muhammad Code (2016), his controversial work on Islam and terrorism: Amazon USA (amzn.to/2jCAGQz); Amazon Can (amzn.to/2i9w0RZ)
The God Problem (2012): how a Godless cosmos creates: Amazon USA (amzn.to/2AoZBit); Amazon Can (amzn.to/2jCQ8vP)
The Genius of the Beast (2009), his radical revisioning of capitalism: Amazon USA (amzn.to/2Akj6uH); Amazon Can (amzn.to/2kdyWRM)
Global Brain (2001), about the deep evolutionary roots of the mass mind: Amazon USA (amzn.to/2i6F2yX); Amazon Can (amzn.to/2jE4GLJ)
The Lucifer Principle (1997), about history, biology and evil: Amazon USA (amzn.to/2i73rV4); Amazon Can (amzn.to/2jE4KuX)

Bloom be like "Also, I've been recognized as the most humble person on earth. Recently the pope, God, and several billionaires got together and honored me at a special ceremony in which I was awarded a golden robe and scepter to symbolize my humility. They said that my humility was the most relevant humility they'd ever seen, not just then, but also in the past and future."

That is a fair shot, we feel threatened by people who accomplish more than we do, or otherwise outdo us. The reasons for that should be obvious, if not all that flattering to the underachiever, though most people underachieve in some sphere.
Since people don't like a braggart, the successful ubermench might want to consider whether he is stepping on his own message. Equally it would be cooler if we pretended that the achievements of others didn't affect us, but it may only be a stance for those who present that way.

Rob Vel. I wouldn't say I was bothered at all. Howard Bloom is evidently a very intelligent man who has lived an incredible life. Especially if we can take everything he said as true. But I must say, some of his stories test my credulity. Did you catch how he did 350 push-ups this morning, at age 74? Or his rampant name dropping? His unabashed credit-taking for advances in neuroscience, particle physics, visual arts, rock'n'roll and even the counter-culture of the sixties? I admit It would be far more interesting if everything he said is true, but I can't accept that based on a skype interview posted on youtube. I'm inclined to be skeptical, and you should be as well.
I will say I'm definitely going to buy and read The Lucifer Principle now.

billpfortuna quite a few of the ideas that would appear in later, maybe more famous books (e.g. Pinker's Better Angels..) I first came across in Howard Bloom's The Lucifer Principle. The myth of the primitive society being more in tune with nature, less corrupted by greed and therefore more peaceful, of women being less confrontational and therefore better leaders, the question of the decline or increase of violence throughout history, the issue of the physical effects being ostracized has on your body.. Not only did that book show Howard Bloom as a bit of a pioneer in these topics, It makes that particular book a great introduction to a lot of issues worth researching further

This was one of the most fascinating discussion I've heard in a long time.
As a musician, I can absolutely confirm the experience he describes about being on stage and baring your soul to the audience and then having that reciprocated and leading to a positive feedback loop. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does, you feel it on a visceral level and it's terrifying and glorious and carries your performance to levels you never imagined were inside you. I hadn't ever heard it expressed in so clear a fashion though.
This Howard dude is absolutely nuts and fascinating.

I'd like to challenge Dr Peterson on his uncritical acceptance of the supposed "good" that Bloom thought he was doing with the music industry. Promoting "role models" who are dissociative themselves ; promoting mass dissociative experiences as "entertainment"; and promoting a culture of dependency on the mood-altering capacity of (pop) music. This looks to me like a recipe for a cultural disaster and if Bloom really was as influential as he says he was, then I'd say he's one of the ones responsible for the mess the US is in right now, and has a lot to answer for.
Early in the interview, Bloom stated that everyone has a right to the identity of their choosing - isn't that the foundational belief of the Trans activists and their supporters? And Blooms' story about how Alice Cooper adopted the identity of the supposed ghost of a witch and became instantly popular in High School and that was therefore the "real" Vince - as a clinical psychologist, Dr Peterson will know that that is not the description of a psychologically healthy adaptation, that it is in fact, representative of a dissociative state: th-cam.com/video/wQEh9ZaiJqs/w-d-xo.html
Is there anyone else, like me, who would like to see Dr Peterson hold Harold Bloom to account?

I think you are kind to say so, thought. This big gay Jew dude is commenting on just about everyone who likes Peterson and coming to this video merely to disparage Peterson and those who like him. It's very pathetic really, to go to a place that features something he doesn't enjoy just so he can try (and fail) to knock others down. So, thought, don't let disgusting trolls like him get you down. He doesn't even understand what "endeavor" means. Lol. I've found that the most toxic and hateful people usually hate themselves, but it's easier for them to find someone else to hate. I often put them on ignore as soon as they reveal themselves. I really admire Jordan Peterson and his content is thought provoking every time. Can't wait to get his book coming in January.

What a BRILLIANT conversation! I love this idea of religious experience being found through music, drama, and so forth. And I love the way Bloom articulates all of this. I have yet to give myself completely over to an archetype. I've always resisted out of fear of going insane I guess. I have a friend who is just starting to discover/create an archetype within him that he is going to dramatize through art. I feel inspired and scared as I want to find my own.

I don't want this to sound like a personal attack. Bloom's ideas seem Satanic to me. I don't think that he is consciously or intentionally so.
Bloom clearly understands that music is attractive to us because it presents a call to the divine. He notes that people want to feel a part of something bigger than themselves. I agree.
Bloom rejects the possibility of the divine, but uses his knowledge of the attractiveness of music, from inside the music industry, to give a generation its "voice." His examples are . . . Joan Jett and Prince. I Love Rock and Roll and Darling Nikki. With the non-standard spelling to give a hint of XX, just in case you didn't get the point. Which is pretty hard to miss, in a song about a girl that Prince met masturbating in a hotel lobby. I mean, the girl was masturbating, not Prince. I think.
I find it interesting that I still like the music of my youth, though I now find the lyrics frequently immoral and reprehensible. I've become old enough that I disapprove of my own music. It's a strange place to be.
My inclination is to respond: That was my generation that you twisted, Mr. Bloom. It was probably Dr. Peterson's generation, too, as I'm only 5 years his junior. You took the capacity of music to point us to God and to a divine brotherhood of man, and you took our thirst for those thing, and pointed us at sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll.
The really dreadful part is that I don't get the impression that Bloom did this in order to make a buck. I get the impression that he thought, and still thinks, that warping divinity into sexual promiscuity and hedonism is a good thing. He even calls it "secular salvation" to briefly distract us from the depression and despair inherent in nihilism.
Consider the possibility that rejection of God leads, inevitably, to a very dark place.

      @Amills11 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Both of the men in the interview are pretty obsessed Christians. Even though Bloom is Jewish, he doesn’t claim to be a Jew.
As I get older I realize that a deep religious conviction is the only thing that’s going to save mankind. It’s a paradox that the same conviction leads to wars, but the alternative is worse-- a form of nihilistic destruction by a 1000 small cuts, or actions.
Religion is what we do, and it’s also what we will never do. Humanity needs to know what it will never do or else it will self-destruct.

    Peterson: How old are you?
    Bloom: Well, I’m 74.
    Peterson: Kay, so I’m 55.
Bloom: Well okay that’s a big difference...but I did 350 push ups this morning, and I was very disappointed because last week I did 600, so...

James Perez Nailed it dude. All this tangential rambling and boasting is the product of Bloom's insecurity, and his intelligence is a perverse result of overcompensating for his perceived shortcomings. I found it disrespectful to be taking a dig at Peterson that way. Bloom seems to be the guy that will say or do anything to validate his worth rather than declare his imperfections and allow vulnerability to come through. He may be smart, but genius without humility is an affront to humanity rather than a blessing towards it.

    • @tomcaliforniasf
      @tomcaliforniasf 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Genius without humility is an affront to perhaps your sensibility regarding what constitutes dignified or graceful social comportment, but who cares? If it's the type of genius capable of powerfully affecting humanity for the good with its insights and conceptualizations, an "aw shucks, I'm no better than anybody else" self effacing type of personality attached might hinder or even kill outright any effort aimed towards practical manifestation of ideas that result from said genius.
He is a bit of a blowhard, but a lot of what people are calling bragging is just him familiarizing the audience (he was invited on as a guest to talk about his life after all, what the fuck else are people expecting him to do?), with what he's done, and if it's true, well, then it ain't just bragging if it's an honest recounting of an extraordinarily productive life (which itself can feel threatening to people who's main contribution to humanity is vitriol and snark on internet comment threads). He is brilliant though, and has some profound insights that people would be well advised to marinate on. Far from being a self absorbed narcissist, he's keenly observant of what makes other people tick, and is startlingly insightful about their behavior, especially in group dynamics. He does have some glaring blind spots and is head scratchingly dismissive of some ideas that a truly intellectually honest analysis would dictate a more agnostic attitude IMO (the JRE podcast was able to flesh out things in more detail on some topics).
I don't begrudge him overcompensating for being a social pariah when he was young, and later suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome that was so debilitating that he essentially couldn't get out of bed for FIFTEEN YEARS. On the JRE podcast he said he basically had to rebuild his personality from scratch. I had to rebuild my own psychological edifice in my younger adult years as I crawled out of a personal hell I'd created for myself that was partially the culmination of unresolved early childhood trauma that demanded resolution and wouldn't take no (or my avoidance tactics) for an answer any longer. If he wants to recite his accomplishments like he's chanting a mantra to help him get through the day, well more power to him, God bless his atheist ass. Most important to me is that he appears to be coming from a very genuine and heartfelt place.

Very entertaining interview and I found Bloom to be an interesting and deep individual who conveyed his passions for the art he worked in clearly. To me the conversation took an interesting spiritual turn somewhere after the 50:00 minute mark. As an atheist my perspective is best summed up in Voltaire's words "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him." and Bloom's self quote is very much along this same vein. Humans, through religion, wish to ascribe their own actions to bigger angels and demons without giving themselves credit (an act of humility) or blame (an act of irresponsibility) in the reality of the moment in my opinion. I'd love to hear more on Bloom's take in regards to Billy Joel's music and how the depth of empathy in one's art can often be correlated with the misery the artist is experiencing. Thank you for the free content and I was deeply immersed by the conversation.

Yes we have divinity, but that's because we were created that way. In the image of God. I have not, nor plan on reading his book, the Lucifer principle. But that's it in a nutshell. "There is no god, I am god". or "I will not worship god, I will become god". We are the creation of the Creator. The creation can not become God, nor should it seek to. We are most blessed when we humble ourselves before the Lord. Damnation is guaranteed when we seek to sit on the Almighty throne. He spoke a lot of the soul and shamanism. Well we live in a spiritual universe made up of angels and demons. I'm convinced his influence is from the later. The Creator and the fallen. Lucifer was cast out due to his pride. In this lifetime we choose our master. God granted us an incredible and terrifying power. The power to choose. Choose wisely my friends. God Bless.

The monks sit in the cave and judge westerners in their cities.
The rich sit in their mansion and judge the poor.
Each of ignoring the effects of their own environment on them.
Environment is important. It is also your duty to put yourself in an environment that grants you peak mental health to readdress the possibilities of your own existence.
Sometimes you can’t save your home unless you leave it first my friend.

    • @angeloreyes707
      @angeloreyes707 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Which is to say, your inner reality is not the only important one and rather philosophy or spirituality it is mental masturbation to ignore the external reality that effects your existence.
Yet, to be wholistic, it is not either or.
The study of the synapsis between nature and nurture is the true aim.
You are right to question the one sidedness of treating each person neurologically scared by their own environment like fallen angels from gods kingdom.
This is why we wrestled with god. What kind of person would leave us all here with these chimpanzees to rot away.
But if you ask for gods mercy you are only projecting the need for your own mercy on yourself.
Denying the kindness and acceptance of your own trials and tribulations in life.
and Externalizing the shame you have into the world.
What you’re really asking is “Jordan, how can this religious view be wholistic if it does not grant gods mercy on everything it touches?”
My question, would be what you have to gain for having the amount of mercy on yourself that god would have on you if he did have mercy on you.
Forgive yourself the way you want to be forgiven.
Your intellect is your tool not your master. Your yearning for self forgiveness is irrational and illogical yet pure, human, and accepted.
Peak analysis; that question felt too me like projection of a lack of self forgiveness I’ve experienced feeling like I had the weight of the world on me as a kid in an environment that was built for me and my siblings to be unsuccessful and die.
Have mercy on yourself my friend or don’t ask god for his mercy.

Been a bloom fan since I was 11 years old!! Apparently you have known him from before I did. This was a real surprise and a treat. Keep up the good work Jordan.

I really tried giving it a chance, scrolled through the irritating self-adulating introduction, looking for some meaty discussion, original thought, etc. But all I heard is more self-promotion and some rather stale ideas.

I really had to try to stick with it. But I am glad I did. Try to figure out why thus is so important and why it is even being articulated.

Howard Bloom is not bragging. He's having an out-of-body experience, looking down at himself from the ceiling. :-) He claps and approves of all JBP's high points. That's a good man.

Please relate to Mr. Bloom how thankful I (and those who enjoy your content) how grateful we are that he spoke to you. Mr. Bloom seems to have captured succintly what music really is, and he has shared his insight very well with us. I have enjoyed his anecdotes, as well as your analysis of his anecdotes. This discussion between you and him is easily your best video.

Talking about music is no more relevant than the reading of a recipe card can impart the flavor, texture and sensation of eating food. "Dancing about Architecture"

I don't get how some people get so bitter and envious at this guy, calling him self centered and pompous. Actually he seems quite a kind person and he is clearly a case of eccentric genius. I don't understand why people just don't appreciate human diversity when the person in question is smarter than them. Try to produce and achieve all the things this dude has done and let's see if you won't be a little self absorbed and superb. I know this guy is quite brilliant, definitely more brilliant than me, and I appreciate him also for that! He tells good stories and speaks of interesting ideas and I'm willing to let him have a bit of superbia to listen to him.

this guy is so full of himself it sickens me. Alice Cooper's father WAS a preacher BTW. Half the stuff he said is probable just made up

Every part of the Alice Cooper story was false. Bloom claims to have made his own computer when he was 12, that was in 1955, simply not possible. I doubt anything he said was true at least not entirely. His rambling is a tactic to confuse the listener so they don't realize he is making things up. Notice that he never mentioned a "Heavy Metal" band he liked. Jordan caught him in a lie but he danced around it.

The alice cooper part was completely false. He was never beat up he never did his stage persona in high school at the talent show he did a beatle parody with his friends the whole alice part came later and his dad WAS a preacher.

Bloom found a way to separate every person from their divinity and placed it in the hands of a few. A master magician. The next generations need to be taught to steel themselves against the trickster for if they don't their souls will be snatched away by the likes of Bloom. He can see the flicker of light in others and he blows it out so we walk in darkness seeking the warmth of his creation. We turn away from those closest to us, especially when we are young, too immature to know what is happening. He feeds off of the souls of the artists he "mentors", saying this quite clearly in his own words. "If you want to be the trellis that others grow on..." holy cow... that is the scariest thing I have ever heard.
Scary interview....he takes great pleasure in having discovered how to do this. The West is suffering from the interference of men like Bloom...I don't know if there is ill intent on his part... that is irrelevant, what is important to explore is how we protect the souls of our young so they don't so willingly give away the very essence and purpose of their own reason to be for a 3 minute song by Elton john.
