Dr Jordan B Peterson and Dr. Del Paulhus delve deep into the Dark Tetrad: Machiavellianism, Narcissism, Psychopathy, and the newly added Sadism. From these four traits, researchers can quantify much of the darkness of humanity, and begin to study it in a way that yields numerical results, and the potential to make substantial predictions.
Dr. Delroy Paulhus is a personality researcher whose work in dark personality traits, via a variety of psychometric methods, has yielded measures of the Dark Tetrad. His work has also validated measures of socially desirable responding, perceived control, free will and determinism, and over-claiming. His work has been published in over 150 articles and books, and his current citation count exceeds 43,000.

I met Dr Peterson on the street in Louisville before one of his speaking events. I was starstruck and stuttering and barely able to put a sentence together but my god, I was blown away with how nice and completely attentive he was to me in those brief moments. The attention he paid to me was like I was the most important person on earth just for a couple minutes. A wonderful human being.

I had the pleasure of hearing him speak in Dublin and had a wonderful opportunity to chat with him briefly at a meet and greet afterwards. I think “the story” is also extremely important concept for men to grasp when interacting with women. The steps men take to go from a to b with small things socially gives context of their reasoning- which will potentially send red flags to women and interpreting that correctly is more useful than blaming women for the reaction if not understood immediately.

I've lost a lot during this coup (government lockdowns) so I'm climbing back up. I let go of my career in policing due to mandates and unconstitutional actions but, on the contrary, this suffering and loss has also brought on a new sense of responsibility within my community and more importantly: within the home front for my 2 boys. Thank you Dr Peterson. I have learned so much about myself each time I watch you. I come from a very confusing, controlling, violent, alcoholic childhood. While I left home at 15 & have had a successful life, well educated, raised beautiful responsible Christian children, I have often been haunted by my childhood. I spent my entire life trying to get my father to say a few nice words to me. “I love you or I’m proud of you”. I worked hard & was an Executive at the top of my field in both a non profit & corporate. But never once did he accept me. If fact, a few months before he died I asked him if he ever loved me. His answer was “yes, but….” I got up from my chair & told him there was no “but” in love. I did not see him again until he was hours from death. In his will he made sure I knew how much detest he had for me. Yet, I was the only child that was free of drugs, alcohol & had an extremely successful life & raised children that did not end up in jail.
For years I have been in emotional pain over this. Your videos are finally helping me move past this.
Just a note, I did keep my children away from my toxic family & I raised them without violence. They were raised in the church with parental supervision & guidance. I was heavily involved in their lives. A childhood the opposite of mine.

I worked directly for the psychopath and watched how effective his methods were at destroying people and achieving his goals. My competence made him look good so we had no issues but I was always aware that a bad day was all it would take for me to come into his focused wrath. I would tell people that mistook his smile for friendship that he had no friends but they would not believe me until it was to late. Later when I no longer could lose my job at his command, he said something about us getting along, and I told him it was because I always understood we were not friends and I was expendable every day he laughed and smiled.

Until one day my friend opened the door to his space and was confronted by the maniac who needed him for another project, my friend declined his former boss did not have the ability to do the work he hired people to do. My friend was verbally abused by the apoplectic he closed the door and went back to work. The next day at work there was an explosion in his office, he could not report the accident as he was too badly injured and burns. Fortunately, his videos have the entire morning on tape until smoke filled his office but video showed what happened when air exchanged and sprinklers cleared the room and showed the old boss reentering the room and using his feel began kicking my unconscious friend around His boss personifies The American Pyscho but in public he has monolithic Public Relations Staff flooding the world with a masked monster behind the charming persona. When they talked about whether certain negative traits can be positive when paired with other traits, I wondered if the different kinds of sadism might be positive when paired with observing fights and also when paired with our instincts towards fairness.
For example, it would be a huge evolutionary advantage for our ancestors to pay close attention to fights between other members of the tribe because of the enormous amount of vital information such observations can give them (who is a strong ally you want to groom and make friends with? who is the enemy of your enemy? is the alpha still effortlessly on top or did he win the last fight by the skin of his teeth, and who is likely to take him down and become the new alpha in the near future? etc.) and since such fights predate our ability to rationalise, it would make sense for us to have evolved a dopamine reward system to make us enjoy watching fights and encourage us to do so again, just as it rewards us for other useful behaviours (eating, having sex etc.)
This would explain the love for violent sports; we're watching two alphas/teams of alphas compete for supremacy and our instincts haven't caught up to the fact that they're doing it for our entertainment rather than because they're going to take over the tribe and have a major impact on our lives. We are also aware that everyone involved in the fight has agreed to it; we can cheer hockey players beating each other up, but if they suddenly started attacking random people in the crowd who were just taking their kids to see the match as spectators we would consider that completely unacceptable.
Also, in terms of fairness, the most satisfying examples of justice (both from fictional stories and from real life) typically involve something unpleasant happening to the villain, ideally proportionate to their crimes; we can cheer and laugh when the mass-murdering monster has a prolonged and humiliating and/or gruesome death, while we would be horrified if it happened to a sympathetic character. Given the importance of the social contract to humans (both today and throughout our evolution,) it again makes sense for us to have a reward system that prompts us to watch and relish something horrible happening to the individual who unforgivably violates the contract. This seems to be true from quite a young age, as kids love fairy stories with a happy ending, but that often involves both a reward for the heroes and suffering for the villains, suggesting that kids can develop a sense of sadistic justice quite early on.
The satisfaction we would take from watching people get hurt in these situations seems very different from the more stereotypically sadistic situation where the pleasure comes from the suffering of a helpless victim, so maybe the term "sadism" is too wide an umbrella? As they say in the video, the theories for why someone might enjoy inflicting pain on someone who is no threat and hasn't wronged them are not exactly self-evident or rock-solid, and things like sexual sadism (where you delight in inflicting suffering on someone who might bear your children, which seems completely evolutionarily counterproductive) may well be a straight-up miswiring rather than a useful instinct. However, in the situations I outlined, the advantage to sadism seems clearer, so maybe the kind of sadism that is "fair" and contingent on a very narrow set of circumstances should have a different label?

Before my career ending accident I was almost always my hockey team’s enforcer. However, I must strongly point out that my reason for taking on that role had very little with the need/want/desire to hurt or dominate others. I fell into that role because of my need to protect my fellow teammates from illegal and purposefully harmful behaviors done upon team.
If you intentionally jabbed your stick into a teammate with the intention to cause pain then I felt the need to say “No. There will be repercussions for such behavior. And you won’t like it”. I never went out to intentionally attack anyone. I was there to let others know that if you try to hurt one of my guys then you’ll be dealing with me. You become known as the one that you don’t want to fight with and that, in turn, greatly reduces the amount of times that force is actually needed to be used.

In hockey no one wants to see an injury and the fighting has a purpose of protection or releasing tension before people start to injure each other. I have never seen a crowd be more excited for a fight than a goal. and I have never seen anyone seriously injured in a fight. I was vulnerable as a young woman to these traits in boyfriends. One reason is that I was raised in a pretty sheltered from the world religious cult and I really was innocent of the ways of the world. The other is that my oldest brother exhibited all of these traits and my mother didn't stop him in any way. She made some ineffective attempts before she just began to tune out his behaviour. She kept saying that because he's the oldest, he gets whatever he wants. (Her family had the same dominance hierarchy so she just imported it, I think unconsciously.) So my oldest brother essentially patterned my brain to this behavior. It took YEARS (years!) for me to finally understand the pattern-imprint. Ultimately I thank God for reaching me and leading me into His family. That is no fantasy (for those who would think so); He saved my life, in every respect. He's brought order out of the chaos, and continues to do so. And he completely and utterly healed me after baptism from the once-inexplicable attraction that I felt, like the moth to the flame, to destructive types.

I love being wrong but it takes a lot for me to admit it. You gotta have facts . My former boss and I used to have great discussions. Former job in the army was filled with debate. All people of similar intelligence. Wish someone would have encouraged me in his way a long time ago. Oh well.

@P in my opinion, with the acceptance of mental health issues in recent times as a normal aspect of life and the encouragement of people to express their experiences, the narcissists have identified the potential attention this can indirectly generate for the sufferers of the mental health issue for support thus jumping on to claim they too are sufferers but always looking for the desired reaction like attention. That's why I've seen countless posts over the years on social media before I nuked them all (bar YT), by people talking about mental health issues but they all want to lift the veil on their depression but no one wants to do the same for narcissistic disorder. I'm speaking from my experience, I don't know about you but I've seen many patterns with multiple people that I would say fit closely to what a narcissist is and they all gravitate toward the centre of people's attention. Social media, mental health(as I've said), gossip and when someone dies being when they really shine.

Abuse has a way of making a person believe that their life does not matter. That's a bad trap to become ensnared in ... Too easy to forget others ... Too easy to forget what's real.
Life's better when we care about each other ...
Although people will sometimes hurt you (real freakin' bad, for what sure as heck seems like no damn good reason at all), I still think that "Looking out for #1" above all else will leave you with even more pain in the end.
Amazing opportunities present themselves when we are vulnerable and loving enough to risk everything of ourselves in order to put others first, or to stand up to evil in order to do what's right and good.
I saw a crappy show not too long ago that had some of the best dialogue I'd ever heard:
"You said I'd be a hero!"
      "I didn't say you'd look like one."
Sometimes evil makes us think that doing the right thing hurts too much. It tries to get us to give up, turning evil inward (which will always hurt others, as well).

I love the fact that the internet brought out my narcissistic behavior reflected in slamming people for their stupid opinions. At first I loved doing it & so did those who watched because I loved taking on bullies & confronting them. Over time I realized it would contribute to my stress levels in a negative way as I found myself feeling apprehensive about the backlash that came back at me. Next I migrated to using more of my non-defensive communication skills but still kept putting barbs in my comments which was more like weaponized altruism. I just learned to set them up to make a comment that was clearly out of line but I'd pretend it was just an elephant in the room & let them conclude they were wrong by not talking about it.
Once I realized that (it was anti-social) I switched to developing a more fact-focused approach, honoring people as if they deserved honor, yet attacking just their ideas & making it plain that's all I was attacking. However once I realized that most people are so identified with their ideas that they are automatically triggered by criticism of their ideas. They get defensive as if I'd attacked them. I found myself explaining I was just going after their idea & that I regarded them intelligent & mature enough to confront - so would they show me that person & just address my challenge of your idea. But I knew I was still subtly manipulating.
I found that when I reverted to a more pure form of assertiveness (total honesty) where I give them the benefit of the doubt on all points & don't reserve any for prosecution. That was my goal - ultimately not to try & punish idiots for being idiots - but to honor whose image in which they are made but still challenge people's ideas. I admit I'm grateful to have practiced on so many strangers & gotten to the point where I like the person I am online & so do many of those who are capable of receiving benefit from connection oriented communication. Or so they have told me.
Frankly I find it odd that your thoughts in this discussion are largely centered around how negatively these topics are affecting us. However I think the fact that our hidden thoughts are coming out to be spoken & heard in the marketplace due to the anonymity & lack of linkable consequences. I'm not saying they are escaping consequences. I'm only saying they are not recognizing how their negative behavior may be setting up failures that they are not linking to the cause - which is always greatest with the behavior's effect on their soul - which is designed to repeat any event (type) that the soul's owner is in denial of.
I think people are learning at a tremendous rate from this confrontational hellhole of an internet. Learning to be stronger, more magnanimous, less sweating small things, & becoming better communicators as well as raising hopes & confidence in our mutual quest for more empathy-driven behavior mixed with firmness of resolve to live ones values openly through maintaining their own healthy boundaries.

Well, people may be learning how to communicate better online. That doesn't necessarily mean that they're able to communicate better offline, in the real world where people actually interact and stand before one another. @@milfology1017 You're wrong about that. Communications skills, if learned at a basic level, are totally transferrable to any other communication. You obviously don't understand how to evaluate transferrable skills. Verbal communication is essentially making sentences that covey clear, unambiguous text, & easily understood meaning. If you can form sentences to write them down you can use the same skills to speak them - if you choose. Not everyone wants to communicate better. Some people just want to be antisocial like you are. Obviously those who are not here to learn anything won't. But of course they don't come online to learn how to improve anything - so they won't. Tough but nothing to do with what I said - which is that your outlook determines whether you learn anything or not. I'm guessing you haven't or you'd probably be saying - "yeah I've been doing the same thing". But you haven't.

@@SeanWysemanyou just did to that person what you said you are trying to avoid. And you make too many claims without evidence to back it up. People may be able to communicate on the internet well but it's not always transferable to actual human to human contact. Your not accounting for the fact that because we spend so much time on the internet, we aren't learning how to socialize in real life. This is happening to the younger generation. Instead of spending time together in person, many kids are sitting at home, in their rooms, connected to the internet. And there are a lot of other factors that come into play with real life communication. And without valid scientific studies, we truly don't know the answer to these things. You overestimate yourself and you make too many absolute statements based upon your own opinions. Without valid scientific studies, you go on to make absolute statements and then call someone stupid for calling into question what are merely your opinions. And further, to call this person "anti-social" for giving their opinion of your behaviors, (by the way, they were also gracious enough to give you credit for attempting to do some self inventory) is problematic. In what way did you come to the conclusion that that are anti-social? You appear to be someone who is quite comfortable with doling out criticism but you are rather unable to accept any. Your opinions, or rather your theories about internet advancing communication skills in real life, are just that, theories. They aren't fact. You've given us no studies or data to back it up. I'm not someone who likes to give unsolicited advice, but I would challenge you to be able to converse with others without having to insult. In my opinion, it shows confidence to be to do this. And even being able to admit your wrongs, not just to yourself but to others as well. That takes confidence and security within yourself. Knowing you can be wrong but still be a valuable, worthwhile person. After all, we are all only human. We all make mistakes. We all say stupid things sometimes, do stupid things sometimes. All of us are wrong sometimes. It's ok to be wrong. It's ok to be stupid sometimes. It doesn't mean we are absolutely stupid people. It doesn't mean we can't be capable and valuable at other times and in other areas of life. That, in my opinion, is a true confident person. The one who can admit they are wrong, especially when and if they're being called out. They don't need to hide behind a false sense of self or hide behind their narcissistic behaviors, for example. They know they aren't inherently stupid just because they make a mistake. I hope you don't take my comment as an attack, it's not. It's just a conversation. I enjoy communicating with others on the internet, especially when it evolves into a worthwhile conversation.

It's hard to talk about sadism when so many people assume it's a purely sexual term. And it's a very important distinction - those who engage in consensual S&M, and those who torture people against their will for fun.

I found that fascinating because as soon as they spoke about sadism, it struck me almost instantly as a good description for my experiences on the virtual web.

1:41:24 I remember in the 90s coming across kids who would play the online game 'Kill Barney' (the dinosaur). I remember that it meant nothing to them to behead, knife, blow up etc the cartoon dino. I was horrified at the time but I would say they all turned out pretty stable people. Same for the majority of violent video game players. How you can simply extrapolate character traits from a voodoo doll where you've already primed the subject to stick pins in it, is beyond me...

25 minutes listening closely while I work. Makes me look at myself a little closer. Thank you Mr. Peterson.
