From the sounds of it, Chrysler did a good job renovating the hemi. I'd honestly take a tick over a dropped valve seat (most likely because of the mds and/or overheating). Both expensive jobs yes, but youre basically not at a complete loss if a roller fails (as far as I can tell). I did enjoy this in depth video. :)
I agree with you, I had the dropped valve seat and motor was toast. At least with the lifters and cam you can be back on the road within a week instead of needing a complete rebuild or dropping in a new motor. Thanks for watching :)
You're a dummy if you think a roller isn't gonna cause wear in the cam (which means metal being shaved off your CAM and getting into your oil meaning getting everywhere inside your engine) and it not being a total loss if your smart. There's a reason why mechanics worth their own salt and sweat say get a new engine instead of doing "just the lifters", your cams already been shaved down
My 06 5.7 ran great to just under 200K miles, then some guy rear ended me and it was totalled. It was actually quite reliable. I believe it’s because I switched to full synthetic oil early on, never missed an oil change, made sure sparkplugs were always good, and installed the SRT radiator. Never overheated.
MDS was available on the early LX (pre-2006) cars - my '05 300C (June 2004 build date) has it - never had an issue with that system, but disabled it electronically for aftermarket tuning and better long term longevity (the 5.7 is still running perfect today).

So to confirm, the newer 5.7 eagle hemi, has eagle heads? I am from Australia and have a RAM 1500 2022. We don't get much information, so this was absolutely great.
The exhaust manifold bolts break usually near the rear of the manifold because of the design of the manifold. All the cylinders exhaust collects to the rear exit chamber causing that portion of the manifold to expand much more than the the front cylinders. The needle bearings in the lifters fail because of low oil volume being produced at idle . The best solution for that problem is a high volume oil pump in the pre eagle engines. However in the later model VVT engines because of the lengthened crank snout those oil pumps will not fit . There is currently no manufacturer making high volume oil pumps for those engines. Although a K&N high volume oil filter is available bringing a higher volume of oil to the lifters at idle. Switching the exhaust manifolds to a header and increasing the oil flow makes these engines much more reliable engine.

13:21 Chrysler has had a bunch of different engines with valve seat problems. I can’t speak for them all simply because when they fail the heads are trashed so I’ve never had them milled but I just did a head gasket job on a dodge 3.6 which are known for vale seats and when the heads were on the mill you could tell the aluminum was super soft it came off in long string pieces like when ur drilling through soft metal and so much so the pieces we’re scratching the head surface. You take soft aluminum and over heat just a little and that’s it.

Hey brother been watching your videos for quite some time big fan of your content my question is are theses hemi’s reliable or not I would really appreciate your response thank you and god bless
Hey man sorry I can’t get back to many comments but was scrolling through and saw this now! I would say they are fairly reliable but there is simply a higher likelihood you’ll have to fix things down the road. The 5.7 and 6.4 have the lifter and cam issues around 100k miles, doesn’t affect them all but it’s something to look for. The 6.1 Hemi is pretty much bulletproof though. Tough to say because I’ve Seen lots of stories where peoples’ Hemis last 200-300k miles, and lots where they fail prematurely. I wouldn’t say it’s the most reliable engine out there, and I wouldn’t say it’s the worst. What alternatives are there for a performance V8? Most will be in the same boat for reliability in my eyes.
I liked this comparison between the two engines, I have seen the flaws in both. Sooo the question is can you mount the Eagle heads on top off the Pre Eagle engine and have the best of both worlds. The MDS is a failure waiting to happen, so it will not be used. What do you think. Will it work, and what other parts would have to be changed??
Old ones had a cover as well, just a slightly different font/Dodge ram-head logo for the LX vehicles. Trucks always had the cover but looks way better now
Was it ever released as to why the car versions of the Eagle have a passive intake manifold versus truck version? The 6.4 has an active IM from the factory.
I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 5.7 Hemi. I love it! My daily, or least it was until recently. I let my wife take it to work and take her Jeep, a 2015 Jeep Patriot. Good car but no balls with the 4 cylinder
Great video, very detailed, thank you. Simple question - will the cylinder misfire in the Eagle trigger Check Engine light, or should be recognized by the consequences as power loss, low RPM or rough idle?
Simple question without a simple answer unfortunately! That one I’ve heard that it can be tough to detect. So it won’t throw the code every time, what you describe can also be symptoms. It’s tough because it’s a gradual thing as it wears down and taps over time, and eventually it gets to the point of replacement but you don’t always get textbook symptoms. Anything power loss would signal something major to me though especially when combined with the other things you said
@@MarspeedCars my 2011 5.7 hemi jeep grand Cherokee has MDS with vvt. @5:47 your pic says vvt with no mds but I can assure you when it goes into eco mode it's shutting off 4 cylinders and isn't as snappy in throttle.
Yes, and yes. The 'tick', as mentioned in the video, is a result of the roller slapping the cam instead of rolling across the surface of the cam lobe. As this progresses, it is literally wearing the surface of both the lobe and the roller on the lifter which will result in the valve not opening as far as it should. This will cause power loss on that cylinder (as a side note, more than one lifter of the 16 can certainly develop this issue at once) and eventually lead to power loss as there is not a proper air/fuel mixture entering the chamber. Once the computer detects the cylinder imbalance, it will show a code and the dash light will come on. It can happen quickly, and it could seem fine for a long time. It all depends on how "stuck" the roller is, but any indication is a sign of a downward slope towards a costly repair.
@@Nick_Gir rule of thumb, most all automatic equipped hemi's have MDS, except for the 6.1 SRT engines, and the heavy duty truck engines. Manual transmission equipped vehicles did not get MDS. All Hemi Jeeps will have MDS, except for the 6.1 SRT. To the best of my knowledge, all auto equipped 6.4 SRT's will also have MDS, which would include the SRT Jeep GC.
Thank you for the excellent video and valuable information. I put pre-eagle engine into a 2009 Cherokee before I knew about the crank sensor changes from 32 to 58 teeth. The engine starts but stays in limp mode. Anything I can do besides tearing the engine apart to swap in the correct ring?
I have a 2003 in my truck. Has run perfectly and just turned over 200k miles. The only repairs have been the front seal, water pump and alternator. I keep it properly maintained and have been using 15-50 oil. Compression has only dropped by 5lbs. I understand these later engines have had multiple problems. I will keep my 03, I am the only owner as well.
Watching this cause i might be able to snag a beat up 06 ram big horn hemi was going to get it and put the hemi in my 01 ram 1500 4x4 ram if you delete the mds so it runs all 8 all the time and is the pre eagle a good engine or would i be wasting money
Absolutely, I wouldn’t do 3inch unless you’re pushing over 500 HP. 2.5” all the way, with a mostly stock motor you just don’t need that extra room. Might sound good but 3” won’t be optimal for performance. Even SRT and 6.4 cars have 2.75” not 3
I have a slight exhaust tick on my 09 300c. Goes away within 15 seconds, headers and OEM gaskets with new bolts will fix that up. How much is a header install ?
I’ve got a 2019 ram classic with 280000km all highway kms I do not let my truck idle for more then ten mins if I’m sitting around waiting for some one I think that the oil pump should be the same one as the 6.2 L . At idle there isn’t enough oil glow to the cam at idle i believe that this is what causes the hemi tic the valve tic not the exaust manifold crack , that also causes a tic at start up , I’ve noticed that staying on the oil changes I do mine every 7000 to 7500 km full synthetic oil only and like I said I do not let the engine idle. And the fix for the exaust is just change it to some shorty headers they are not as thick of metal and i haven’t heard of those ones having that problem of broken bolts on the header I’m guessing because of the thinner metal less movement for the bolts to brake right . Makes sense .
I actually have an Aspen. I’m thinking about exhaust, cold air intake, Diablo tuner. If you wanna put more $$ in then definitely do a heads and cam package and add headers, it’ll be a beast
Well some how I'm confused. my 2005 Chrysler looks like it has the eagle not the pre-eagle but I must be looking at it wrong. got like 230,000km on it an it sounds brand new still.
Why didn't you discuss the timing components as a defect? I am no mechanic but from my understanding is nothing changed, yet a recall to replace parts was issued for 15 to current, yet nothing for earlier years.
@@snek9353 Chrysler has recalled the timing chain assemblies in just over 50,000 5.7-liter Hemi-equipped Dodge Challengers, Dodge Chargers, and Chrysler 300C models built between 2009 and 2012. (SRT vehicles are not named in the recall, at least not yet.) All have the MDS feature with automatic transmission, and can encounter sudden, catastrophic engine damage when in fuel-saving mode. We know this first-hand as our very own bone-stock 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T recently encountered engine failure on the highway at speed.
@@doyleedward76 First I've heard of any issue with the timing chain. I looked into it and it appears this recall was in '14 and you post is a copy/paste of a motor trend article. As stated the recall is of '09-'12, so then what are you talking about in your first post of "a recall to replace parts was issued for 15 to current". From the MT article it stems from "a known fault in the oil-control valve assembly for which an updated part exists". So if everything from '12 on got the updated part(s) then what's the issue? FWIW I have a '14, that I purchased as a Chrysler certified in '19 dealer records show no unresolved recalls.
What do you mean by "this"? The lifter thing, no not really, they updated the lifters it shouldn't be an issue. Just do your oil changes and use good oil.
Awesome video. If you do a cancellation video of the dodge viper you probably going to have split into 2 or 3 parts, because the viper had 5 gens & i know you don't want to cram everything into 1 video.
Thanks for the support! Yeah I have been trying to start that Viper vid for so long but it will be a huge video so we’ll see, maybe the 2 or 3 parter is a good idea
Yeah I just doubled checked and was actually wrong on that, it first started in the 2005 300C, Magnum, and Grand Cherokee. 2006 was the first year for the trucks, Durango, Commander
My 05 jeep I recently bought has a 5.7 hemi nice clean Florida, has 190 k I have a diablosport on it and it had mds on it which I tuned out, after watching your great video does that mean I could possibly have had my engine replaced before I bought it?
No way of knowing really unless you pull it out or have someone super knowledgeable look at it and recognize some weird shit. I would assume the previous owner would have used the “newer” engine as a selling point though if they had changed it out
@@MarspeedCars figured as much bought it at an auction, just after watching this saying the 06 and up had mds and the 05 wasn't mentioned, gonna do some hunting in the pcm w a scanner and see if I find any, cool channel pal
I had the lifter issue but mine hit right around 65k to 70k miles thankfully I caught it super early apparently so no damage to the cam just a teardown and replace the bad one.
No not really, you need a new harness and PCM since the older computer can’t run the VVT, and the crank differences are another thing. I think it’s possible but would be a nightmare and wouldn’t run right. If you want the VVT motor just buy an 09 and up body.
Just the beginning part I compared in the Hemi Flaws video (I feel the need to do it again in case people only watch this video and not that one), the rest is entirely new/different
1. Pay attention to listen for the tick. 2. Get good answers about manintence and use. 3. Check the hours, there's an hours meter you can pull up in the EVIC. This will tell you if it's idled a lot. 11-13 are the most susceptible years for the lifter failure. The issue isn't as common as many on the internet like to make out but it is something to be warry of and work to prevent.
I’d much rather deal with a hemi tick over all the issues the modern Chevy 5.3s have, seen too many videos of them having less than 10k miles and be completely toast😂
The only thing that separates a ram 2500 and 3500 is the leaf springs. Otherwise it’s literally the same truck, same weight. I have a 06 ram 3500 with the 5.7 hemi. It runs fine
Some or your information is not accurate. For instance; the first gen 3 Hemis were offered in 2002 - 2500 and 3500 trucks only. In my professional opinion, the quench areas in the heads do NOT negate the basic Hemispherical design.
Impressive brother. Very informative, idk if you’ve done it yet but do 6.1 vs 6.4 HEMI next, cause now I’m curious

Old ones had a cover as well, just a slightly different font/Dodge ram-head logo for the LX vehicles. Trucks always had the cover but looks way better now
I like the police ones with no covers
Hey Marsspeed🙋🏽. Quick question.. Can I put an 05 dodge ram 1500 engine in my 06 dodge charger r/t? I'm trying to see If their interchangeable
Was it ever released as to why the car versions of the Eagle have a passive intake manifold versus truck version? The 6.4 has an active IM from the factory.
Wondering how my 16’ challenger rt manual with the 5.7 will hold up. At 42k miles now
It'll be great, just take car of it.
That's nothing. My 15' Charger RT just hit 96k and feels way quicker and still sounds like it did at 16 miles!
Is the 2008 and the 2009 5.7 have the same connecting rods and crank shaft
Anything power loss would signal something major to me though especially when combined with the other things you said
@@MarspeedCars Appreciate reply and explain. Thank you!
Hello, sir. I have a question. 5.7 hemi engine friendship with gas or no ?
im using an early hemi block with eagle heads best of both worlds!
You got your MDS data wrong, I have it on the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Unlimited.
The one thing the older hemis had was a better sound.
Hi marspeed! Plz do a video on the 2011 pentastar v6 and the newer ones in the 2017+ Jeep Grand Cherokees!?
Thank you for the excellent video and valuable information. I put pre-eagle engine into a 2009 Cherokee before I knew about the crank sensor changes from 32 to 58 teeth. The engine starts but stays in limp mode. Anything I can do besides tearing the engine apart to swap in the correct ring?
is there a difference between truck vs lx style engines? other than the throttle & throttle body ?
I have a 2003 in my truck. Has run perfectly and just turned over 200k miles. The only repairs have been the front seal, water pump and alternator. I keep it properly maintained and have been using 15-50 oil. Compression has only dropped by 5lbs. I understand these later engines have had multiple problems. I will keep my 03, I am the only owner as well.
I think you misspoke around 12:02 but awesome video. It's great!!! Thanks!
Great video! 6.4 next
I have a 2010 5.7 grand cherokee does anyone have any idea how i can reliably supercharge it?
Watching this cause i might be able to snag a beat up 06 ram big horn hemi was going to get it and put the hemi in my 01 ram 1500 4x4 ram if you delete the mds so it runs all 8 all the time and is the pre eagle a good engine or would i be wasting money
Are the 3.6 Ltr dodge chargers having problems?
@marspeed do you think having 3inch exhaust from the cats back on the preeagles loss back pressure?
Absolutely, I wouldn’t do 3inch unless you’re pushing over 500 HP. 2.5” all the way, with a mostly stock motor you just don’t need that extra room. Might sound good but 3” won’t be optimal for performance. Even SRT and 6.4 cars have 2.75” not 3
I have a slight exhaust tick on my 09 300c. Goes away within 15 seconds, headers and OEM gaskets with new bolts will fix that up. How much is a header install ?
Your hearing things....
My 2005 Magnum 5.7 is stock and original running gear. It is equipped with MDS.
If im not mistaken Wasnt the Hemi also replaceing the Magnum 8.0l V10 For the 2003 Model Year as well? Or was it the common rail That did Lol
Valve seat drops from heat because of high revs and poor cooling by the radiator and oil pump, which both were updated.
Good work
I have a 06 chager hemi with 250k miles and its still running with no tick so you can get a lot of miles from the old hemis
I have an 06 Jeep 5.7 with 194k miles and still running strong.
My 14 Charger R/T has 117k mikes and also giving me no troubles
@@H1storybr3akdown Yeah these hemi engines run forever if you take care of them !
I have a 2006 Charger RT. Had a ticking noise just before the engine blew up...... Now looking to buy an engine. 😢
the 5.3 vortec has the same exhaust leak problem
Anyone have a chrysler aspen with a 5.7? If so what have you done as far as performance? I need some ideas for my 07 Hemi Aspen
I actually have an Aspen. I’m thinking about exhaust, cold air intake, Diablo tuner. If you wanna put more $$ in then definitely do a heads and cam package and add headers, it’ll be a beast
Great Info as always Marspeed. A shout out to Reignited aswell. You guys know your stuff. Love this engine
So the scat pack engine is bad ?
Well some how I'm confused. my 2005 Chrysler looks like it has the eagle not the pre-eagle but I must be looking at it wrong. got like 230,000km on it an it sounds brand new still.
Someone probably replaced the engine with that mileage.
I got a couple questions for the Chrysler 300c because I have one my self it’s a 2005 and I got a lot of issues with it
What was wrong with it
Just for info I got a MDS in a 2005 Dodge Magnum so it's not in 2006+ year only
Why didn't you discuss the timing components as a defect? I am no mechanic but from my understanding is nothing changed, yet a recall to replace parts was issued for 15 to current, yet nothing for earlier years.
What recall?
Goggled sorry for the misunderstanding
My 2014 has the exact same motor and did the exact same thing!
Does this include the 5.7 in our 2021 Durango?
Yes it’s the eagle hemi (2009 and up)
What do you mean by "this"? The lifter thing, no not really, they updated the lifters it shouldn't be an issue. Just do your oil changes and use good oil.
Good job👍
Awesome video. If you do a cancellation video of the dodge viper you probably going to have split into 2 or 3 parts, because the viper had 5 gens & i know you don't want to cram everything into 1 video.
Thanks for the support! Yeah I have been trying to start that Viper vid for so long but it will be a huge video so we’ll see, maybe the 2 or 3 parter is a good idea
MDS beginning In 06 would that mean my 05 300C doesnt have it? I thought it did
Yeah I just doubled checked and was actually wrong on that, it first started in the 2005 300C, Magnum, and Grand Cherokee.
My 2017 Ram is having no issues. (Except the unconnect being virtually useless). Only has 57k miles however.
I had the lifter issue but mine hit right around 65k to 70k miles thankfully I caught it super early apparently so no damage to the cam just a teardown and replace the bad one.
What year?
Great info, i've always wondered why the trucks have more power, ithought it was just a tune, but it is the different intake runner and cam.
So can u drop an eagle motor in a pre eagle vehicle
No not really, you need a new harness and PCM since the older computer can’t run the VVT, and the crank differences are another thing. I think it’s possible but would be a nightmare and wouldn’t run right. If you want the VVT motor just buy an 09 and up body.
Can you do a video on the 6.1/6.2/6.4
Do the 3rd gen hemi vs the new 392 hemi
Same engine.
Could you make a comparison video to other boat engines?
Has anyone tried Ceratec in a R/T?
Didn't you already make this video before ? Or am I thinking of a different video but similar swear seen a video by you b4 comparing the 2.
Just the beginning part I compared in the Hemi Flaws video (I feel the need to do it again in case people only watch this video and not that one), the rest is entirely new/different
@@MarspeedCars a okay thought so . Thought I was crazy for a minute tho 😂 keep up the good work man love the videos
I’m in the process of getting a 2011 challenger 5.7 hemi so what do you recommend?
Don't. I just got rid of a 2012 Charger RT. They have issues with cam and lifter failure.
@@dwaynesmith4094 oh thanks that, but this one is a challenger. I’ll keep that in mind
@@gusramirez2960 did you ever buy one? if so how’s it treating you
I’d much rather deal with a hemi tick over all the issues the modern Chevy 5.3s have, seen too many videos of them having less than 10k miles and be completely toast😂
imagine making the financial decision to buy a Dodge ram 3500. And you get it with a 5.7
The only thing that separates a ram 2500 and 3500 is the leaf springs.
