      Great Superman, pretty good Clark.
      (Cavil) Reeve did such a wonderful back and forth that it's really hard to top. One of the only memorable things about Superman III is his battle with his "alter-ego"

      @@richardrobbins387He was hardly Clark in the movie though.
      Reeves played Clark completely different to Superman (mannerisms, how he parted his hair etc). Cavill played Clark as Superman with glasses. Besides, Lois knew from the start in MOS.

    I think the fact that Henry Cavill got to keep his hairy chest because he cited actual comic instances of Superman’s hairy chest just speaks to how good a choice he was to play the roll.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention the tie-in between Henry and Russell Crowe. When Russell was filming Proof of Life, they filmed part of it at Stowe prep school, which is where Henry went to school. Between takes, Henry went up to Russell and asked him about being an actor. Russell was honest and told him how hard it was, but encouraged him. He later sent him an autographed photo. When they were filming MOS, Russell thought Henry looked so familiar and asked him if they'd met. Henry told him who he was and that Russell was one of the reasons he became an actor. I thought it was a pretty cool coincidence.

      Born in the 80s too and like you Reeve's superman is the one I grew up and still like the best best in many ways. That being said, returns isn't a bad movie and had a lot of potential but they really dropped the ball in forcing Brandon into cloning Reeve's superman instead of allowing him to make the character his own. They let Kevin Spacey do his own thing with Luthor though the look was obilously based off of Gene Hackman's version. MoS is great though imo. I have the blueray and I've probably watched it 100 times over the years lol.

      @@thisisnotachannel But,but,but! He didn'y have red budgie smugglers! If your irony alert is not blaring, please ignore this comment. Henry is a terrifyingly good actor and uber nerd. For my own opinion, I hated the Superman movies he was in, but thought he was by far the best actor to ever play the role. (And I like Christopher Reeve as superman in I and II and I like Brandon Routh in the role, I'm not a Supes hater)
      Henry got a rough deal as he is a great actor. Specifically from the studio execs, as is almost always the case, but also from us fans as we expected more from an actor who is an uberfan, but we all forgot that beancounters and management types with huge salaries and their eyes on 'The Prize" were always going to shout down someone like him. He might know much more than them, he might be the big draw that makes them millions to share out in dividends and bonuses, but to them he is just the last thing they used to load up their own wallets.

      Eh, still prefer Terence Stamp as Zod. He was just as iconic as Reeve was as Superman. "Why do you say this to me, when you know I will kill you for it." The role really demands Stamp's underplaying - if you're all-powerful and you KNOW you're all-powerful, you don't need to provide evidence at every opportunity.

    Personally I think a lot of people miss the point of MOS- most of the complaints you hear is Superman wouldn't do this Superman that, but the thing with this movie is he's not actually Superman yet. He's just learning his powers, how to control them and how or if he should even use them. The things that happen in this movie should have shaped him into the Superman we all wanted to see and I honestly think that was the plan until WB shat all over everything trying so hard to catch up with the MCU vs just making great movies with the arsenal of iconic characters at their disposal.

    For the most part, I really liked the Man of Steel movie. I have heard people hating the fact that Superman killed Zod and that Superman has a no kill code. My argument to that is that most people who have a no kill code usually have been closely affected by the violent death of someone in their lives. With Batman it is his parents. In this case, it's Superman with one of the few surviving members of his race. He did the only thing he could think of to save the people Zod was about to kill with his heat vision. I can imagine Superman wracked with guilt over what he did. I can imagine him locked away in his Fortress of Solitude for hours on end going over the death of Zod and try desperately to see if there were any other solutions to the dilemma that he overlooked in the heat of the moment. That would be where Superman no kill code could stem from in the Synderverse.

    • @oldandtiredskater
      @oldandtiredskater ปีที่แล้ว

      For the no kill code, when anyone complains about it to me with MoS, I just point them to Superman 2 in which, after Zod has literally become a normal human, Christopher Reeve's Superman tortures and then outright murders him. Like, straight up threw him to his death in a seemingly bottomless pit. At least Cavil's had a solid reason, was begging Zod to stop and immediately felt bad about it.

    Man of Steel is one my favorite comic book movies. It has a depth that not even the first iconic Christopher Reeve Superman movie has.
    I never understand the criticism this movie receives. Things like:
    - Why can't SuperMAN have doubts - he may have powers but at heart - he is still a human being. Note: He always does the right thing and just has moments of doubt (don't we all)
    - Superman doesn't kill: Why doesn't he kill? I think it's boring that he just doesn't do it. It makes more sense that he allowed the circumstances to occur that forced him into having no choice and he never wants to feel that way again! Much more interesting.
    - Destruction of Metropolis: Anyone who ACTUALLY watched the Avengers movie - there were buildings being destroyed - people were getting hurt - they just didn't show it. I think it raises the stakes if you ACTUALLY see the destruction. The World engine is raising people up in the air and pulverizing them into the ground into pieces. Yes - when Zod said he was going to terra form the earth - that's what it would be like. That's why when Superman stands up - after being tossed around like a toy - and defeats the world engine - it makes it more satisfying.

    I have several issues with Man of Steel. 1) Superman should always do the right thing no matter the personal cost, as well as always defending the weak and innocent. These were values that he learned from Pa Kent. Yet in the movie, Costner's Pa is telling him to hide, never use his powers, be selfish to protect himself. 2) Superman and Zod's battle destroys half of Metropolis. The Superman from the comics would never recklessly endanger innocent bystanders, let alone cause such wholesale destruction. Instead, he would move the battle to somewhere where no one else would get hurt. 3) Man of Steel misses the heart of Superman, which is hope. Batman is and should be dark and gritty, as Bruce Wayne's origin is born of tragedy, and he is a mere mortal driven by revenge. Superman was created to inspire us to be the best we can, yet Man of Steel is consumed by the grittiness of the Dark Knight trilogy. None of this is Cavill's fault, as he gives a great performance. The fault lies with the script and the fact that Zack Snyder doesn't believe in heroes, which is a real shame.

    • @yehyafakhro266
      @yehyafakhro266 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      1.Pa Kent is literally right, though? Imagine how the world would react to such a being (BvS). Martha Kent even said this: "Martha Kent: [about Jonathan] He always believed you were meant for greater things, and that when the day came, your shoulders would be able to bear the weight." And Pa Kent said this too: "Jonathan Kent: And I don't blame you, son. It'd be a huge burden for anyone to bear, but you're not just anyone, Clark, and I have to believe that you were... that you were sent here for a reason. All these changes that you're going through, one day... one day you're gonna think of them as a blessing; and when that day comes, you're gonna have to make a choice... a choice of whether to stand proud in front of the human race or not." During the end of the movie, Pa & Ma Kent would watch young Clark playing with the dog, doing the classic Superman stand, showcasing that he'll be something great.
      2.Most of the destruction is caused by General Zod. Superman literally tries to take the fight outside of the city and even to space, but he failed. And even if they didn't cause any destruction or fought in a big city, and instead fought in a barren land, that would look extremely boring and uninteresting, to say the least.
      3."Man of Steel misses heart," really? You can see the guy smiling when he flies for the first time, smiling when he discovers his origins and learns about his real name. Smiling multiple times to Ma Kent, telling General Swanwick not to spy on him in a funny way. The girl says "he's kinda hot." And also much more.

    • @valentinvasquez761
      @valentinvasquez761 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That is all completely wrong.
      1. Pa kent wasnt telling superman to hide his powers and be selfish, he was a father concerned over and protective of his son, and what revealing his powers would mean, consequences and all. He knew the world would change, the government would get involved, and that society would not leave him alone once he revealed himself. Pa kent wanted his son to be a good person, but he didnt want to crush him with the weight of all that responsibility.
      2. Superman in the comic would never endanger people because he is either already established or campily written to make him be aware enough to move the fight somewhere else as well as have the villains just go along with fighting in an uninhabited area. MoS has a superman that only barely accepted becoming a hero and protecting his home when it is revealed it and everyone in it would be destroyed. He may have had his powers for longer, but zod was bred to be a warrior. The entire time zod kept superman on his toes because superman didnt have the fighting prowess that zod supplemented his jewly found powers with. He may have had the edge in the beginning, but once zod learned to use his powers, there was no hope for superman to move the fight. And even if superman did, why would zod have wanted to fight somewhere else when he could use superman's compassion against him? Zod demonstrated that at the end when he forced superman to kill him and become the last kryptonian with thr alternative being to let the innocent civilans die just to hold onto his morals and hope that things can be resolved non violently. Superman was forced to make that very difficult decision, something pa kent was trying to protect him from.
      3. Zack Snyder doesnt "not believe in superheroes" he just doesnt believe the old comic book tropes of everything working out at the end nice and neatly and without major consequences is realistic. He doesnt believe that heroes should always find a way to not have to compromise their morals and that they must remain squeaky clean. Instead he views heroes as the modern take on the pantheon of the greek gods, faults and all. He knew it was difficult to relate to a character with all the powers ever that tried to enforce and teach his morals to the rest of the world. Of course its easy to be the big blue boyscout to instill hope when almost nothing in existence can stop you. Snyder made superman relatable, he made superman human by having him struggle with the consequences of either bringing his race back from the brink of extinction at the expence of his adoptive home, or protecting his home by sacrificing the last chance that his race has of coming back. Its also why in BvS, batman slowly gives into prejudice and fear and becomes what he fought so hard against, yet you could still easily see things from batman's point of view and why removing superman from the board would be in earth's best interest. Snyder knows heroes arent perfect and he wasnt going to write them as such. The hope in MoS wasnt lost because superman didnt find a way to make everything be wrapped up nice and neatly and not compromise his values, MoS had it all along. It came from him finding the strength to fight for and make sacrifices for what he loves and the hope that we can muster the strength to do the same.

Also I prefer the angle that suggests these characters could exist in the real world. Much as I prefer The Dark Knight Trilogy, Civil is the perfect choice to portray Superman in my opinion.

    I think it would have been GREAT to include the Dark Knight universe in this. I always thought Dark knight should have ended with a scene after the credits where it reveals Superman saved Batman from the bomb at the end.

    DC is my jam. Has been since 1986.
    Nicely covered, Mint Man!
    I may be in the minority here... but I am a HUGE "Snyderverse" fan. It all started with "Man of Steel".
    Zack Snyder translates the pages of comic books and graphic novels to film media better than anyone else ever has. And if WB/DC didn't interfere with his vision, we would be well into "phase 3" (maybe 4?) of the DCEU... and if he could have seen his plans to fruition, most of you would realise how right Zack Snyder was... and continues to be. Most critics don't know their asses from a hole in the ground.
    Henry Cavill IS Superman!

    I really love the amount of research you put into your videos and appreciate your thoughts about why or why not somebody did something during the production. While watching this video, it surprised me to hear you bash the 3D conversion. I was one of about 200 people who did the conversion on Man of Steel. At the time, the company I worked for was known for their meticulous and consistent conversion including the Disney's 'The Little Mermaid', 'Top Gun' and 'Transformers." We were given guidelines from the production company as to how they wanted it to look and feel. I've seen some of our conversions on different screens and they each look different so it's possible that the film wasn't being shown properly. It also depends on where you sit. Dead center (left to right, top to bottom) gives the best results. I'm not trying to invalidate your experience or argue your opinion, just giving you some additional information.
    Please keep up the great work and hopefully you have a better 3D viewing experience in the future.

    As it was going to be entertaining and ask really interesting questions.
    It is a shame Studio Executives forced him to change and rush the project because they wanted to catch up to marvel. And wanted movies with lots of characters. Stupid thinking.

    Bonus fact: The big Kryptonian brute who appears during the invasion is called Nam-Ek. In Dragon Ball (DB) manga & anime, Namek is a planet from which one of the DB's main characters, Piccolo came from. There're a quiet few similarities between Superman & DB's protagonist Son Goku.
