One of my favorite aircraft to travel in; back in the day regional carriers flew many of them in the congested USA East Coast airspace. Then many major airports had an older, shorter general aviation runway; the Dash-7 could "jump the queue" using that runway to avoid air traffic control delays at peak hours.
I was living near Denver Colorado as a young lad when Rocky Mountain Airways inaugurated the world's first DHC-7 service in early 1978. I was a budding AvGeek and not knowing at the time what they were, their Twin Otters would be flying high over the house, coming in over the Front Range about 20 miles out from Stapleton. Eventually I found out what they were. Somewhat surprisingly to me, I've never flown in a DHC-6 or DHC-7...only a scant few DHC-8 flights. I'd really like to rectify the DHC-7 shortage by getting up to Canada and flying aboard this service.
Had the pleasure flying on many Dash-7's with Air Niugini in PNG years ago and then on the Dash 8's as they phased them in. Again the STOL capability was perfect for many of the remote grass strips in PNG, especially in the mountainous highlands region where the plane or chopper are the only way in. Always interesting cargo too, pigs, chickens, drums of fuel, vegetables. Great scenic country to fly in especially in the highlands were a lot of flight is just above the jungle canopy or through mountain ranges. Great workhorse plane, just a little before modern sound proofing, ear plugs come in handy!
True I agree. Air Niugini use to use these aircrafts and now move to Dash 8 aircrafts and jet engine Forker 100. It's good learn where the old dash 7s are used now
I flew the Dash 7 for a few hundred hours as First Officer up in Alaska during late 1980s. It was great watching these guys work! It’s a cool plane, for sure.
Great presentation of Air Tindi and the fantastic and underrated Dash 7 ! Enjoyed this short clip of our exceptional Canadian crews who really work hard !
the red Dash-7´s from 14:57 looks like ex Airgreenland birds, red colour and the white dots on the tail was the livery of Airgreenlands Dash-7´s, flown these quite a bit since childhood as a passenger, a few flights in some pretty memorable weather during winter from Nuuk (GOH) to Kangerlussuaq (SJF), flights here now operated by DASH-8-200´s.
I start going to work in Convairs in 80 (what a bad ass machines), Since 2000 we have nice dash 8 Q 400 a high performance prop airlplanes. I know that those dash 7 are the grand pa off those famous dashs. I saw the government red Dash 7 in Radison and they were parking it in a corner way from view. What a bad idea to hide a so beautiful airplane. I discover that those dash 7 can be run with two pilots. I thouth that they were tree, no mécanic needed its a nice inprouvement.
WOW WOW WOW! the shadow Gods were with you on these flights! spectacular footage, beautiful shadow silhouettes right under the landing gear and just outside cockpit on approaches! are you kidding?? you couldn't have planned it better! Agreed one of the best yet!!!!
nice Comment Dale, im always happy if someone likes my work. feedback like this or suggestions for improvements gives me this motivation to continue making this videos. Greetings from Patrick
Nice to see C-GUAT (the former OY-CBT.). Had some great years working with this Dash7 in BGSF (Søndre Strømfjord, Kangerlussuaq, Sondy air base.) as a former employee in Greenlandair. Those were some great times, these Dash7´s are truly amazing airplanes.
Your welcome. Handling, loading/offloading, start up, groundpower etc.Was a fantastic job, worked around the S61, the dash7, Dash6, dc-10 and later the 767 all that on the apron at BGSF. one of the best places on this planet, the scenery is awesome on the worlds biggest island. Regarding the Dash7, very few are still in action these days. Imo, its one of the best STOl airplanes around, and they sure looks good.@@AirClipscom
I bet Dash 7 is the best STOL in the world! 👍 The low pitched engine sound from the low propeller RPM is very attractive. 21:10 - It looks like a pivot turn on a tank. I wonder how much the steering angle of the nose gear rotates.
Wow! They weren't overstating things when they say STOL. That thing felt like it landed on the head of a pin. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating but damned impressive aeroplane. Did get a little whisper of concern at 7:14 when the number 4 engine started puffing out some "smoke".
Had two wonderful years flying the Dash in and out of London City when it had a shorter runway. Have a lot of respect for a machine I could put down anywhere. Recommended technique in crosswinds was wing down approach and landing, not crabbing in and kicking off drift. Such slow approach speeds, I began one with the runway in the F/Os side window! Having four PT6’s was very reassuring! Great aeroplane.
That sound like some really nice experinces you gathered :) Really nice to hear that professional information about the Dash 7 from you. Even thoug I am not a pilot it was also interesting for me reading your comment. For waht airline did you fly ?
Saw -7 land at a glider strip at Issaquah, WA. Came in and stopped mid-strip… 10 folks climbed out and looked around at the sailplanes. Back on board, started up and took off from where they stopped.!
I worked at a small general aviation airport back in the 80's and one day we were all shocked when one of these landed at the airport. It looked huge on the 60' wide runway. It appeared to be some kind of a training flight because it exited the runway, taxied back and took off again without stopping. I'm sure it was relatively light but still it got off the ground very quickly.
From what I've read, there's never been a plane before or since that can carry that much while having a crazy low stall speed, and able to land & take off from such short runways. It can also spin on its axis and take off on the runway it landed on. On top of that it's pressurized and is the only 48 pax plane to service Lukla airport.
Nice aircraft. To me it seems as easy to fly as a equivalent turbotwin like the Dash-8 or a Fokker-50 Nice camera setup as well, although during startup i could not monitor the fuel flow. However for the second flight i noticed a overtemp on No-4 at startup (within time and temp limmits though). I really liked all these camera's giving a real good impressing of operating the aircraft. Also the excelent audio helped a lot ! A descent crew completes the picture, althogether an excelent video !
thanks for the Comment Pascal, nice that you liked my setup. Im always adjusting it but on some planes its hard to hit the right camera angel, so you can see everything
I noticed a fair amount of "smoke" from #4 engine at start up. It cleared though. Yet comment here from: Pascale Coole, expertly noticed overtemp at startup also. Great video adventure in a magnificent aircraft!
I loved my flight on the dash-7! The props are smaller and the high wing makes visibility better. I took it from Vancouver to Kamloops on a nice day. Beautiful scenery and a very nice ride. Later on that trip i was in dash-8's. The props are longer and found them noisier and they seemed to move more. Just my impression.
Well I think you got a point there the dash-7 has a much more smoother concept than the dash-8. When I remember correctly the dash-8 was designed to transport even more weight
Flew in Dash 7's from Pt Moresby into Kiunga and then up to Tabubil in PNG, back in the mid 80's. Air Niugini had 2 Dash 7's dedicated to this mining construction project and the trip over the mountain to Tabubil, often required a low level flight along the Ok Tedi River gorge, weather changed rapidly and we often had delays or turn backs due to cloud, The 2 Dash 7's were flown from Canada and they were great to fly in.
I was flying 3 times on the Dash-7 from Beryaja in Malaysia to Tioman. The flight from Subang to Tioman was the best of my life. Due to not good wind conditions we made several go arounds and 2 times we diverted for refuling to Johor Bahru. In the end we went back to Subang. On the next day was a separate flight organized to fly us to Tioman and this time we landed with the first try. It was awsome to have one day just flying the Dash 7.
sounds like you got lucky and were able to experience somer long flights on the Dash 7. Even if your flight plan didn't work out it sounded like you had fun :)
@@AirClipscom I was really lucky on that day. They always tried 3-4 times to land, but due to the special runway on Tioman the limits for tail wind were always exeeded and it was quit bumpy on final. I think in total we were 8 or 9 hours on that trip. For this unique experiance it was ok, that my vacation on Tioman was one day shorter. Unfortunately those flight not exist anymore.
Arkia Israel Airlines used to have these beautiful aircraft on their domestic routes from Tel Aviv down to Eilat and Yotvata, and it was a pleasure to ride on them. Yotvata was a very short runway of about 4500 feet. Did it also in very hot weather.

thats the thing with planes like this. But most of the time they are in really good conditions.

The beauty of a four engine machine, something goes wrong with an engine or propeller, you can do a three engine ferry and always get back home.
yeah that's true, also restarting engines was different back then
I love how you use the cameras, awesome stuff.
