Antonov An-26 The Traveling Experience (Cuba)

  • Trough this video you can more or less experience a flight in an Aerogaviota An-26B. I say "more or less" because nothing beats the true experience of doing it yourself. But here I leave some information about the trip in case that you want to try it out.
I booked a flight from Miami to Havana trough Marazul (www.marazul.com/). As soon as I booked that flight (personally at a local office), I proceeded to book the flight from Playa Baracoa to Holguin online trough www.cubatur.cu/or Cuba Travel and paid with a VISA Debit Card. In Cubatur's website I chose Havana as departure location and Holguin as destination. Then I chose the flight offered by Aerogaviota. There were flights with Cubana and Aerocaribbean, but Aerogaviota is the one that flies the Antonov-26B and An-24RV, so I selected Aerogaviota. Notice that by choosing Aerogaviota, your flight will most likely depart from Playa Baracoa Airport and not from Jose Marti Intl. Wether your flight is flown with an An-24RV, An-26B, or ATR-42-500 is up to the company to decide. So for you it's a matter of luck if you want to fly in the Russian birds. In this video you can see an An-26B painted in Cubana colors and then at the end an An-24RV in Cubana colors as well. Those two airplanes were retired from Cubana's fleet and given to Aerogaviota, so even tho they have Cubana colors they fly for Aerogaviota.

With the passengers boarding from the rear, it's possible to "hot load" with both the port and starboard engines running, if they are pressed for time. I'm a big fan of turboprop airliners! Many say that driving a vehicle with a manual transmission is "real driving". I say that flying in a propeller driven airliner is "real flying"! I love the sound that the props make over the whine of the jet engines. In full idle speed, and taxiing, they make your basic "box fan" sound. In takeoff and inflight, ;they make what I call the "Bumblebee" sound. I wish that most mainline aircraft, used for most domestic flights, like the Boeing 737, and the Airbus A-320, were turboprop instead of pure jet.
The 60 cycle flicker of the computer or TV screen creates optical illusions of the props spinning slower or backwards.
I see that they are taxiing in on just the starboard engine, probably to save fuel. To equalize engine wear, I would favor the "POSH" rule for one engine taxiing. "Port Out, Starboard Home". That means taxi out on the port engine, and taxi in on the starboard engine.

My dad was flight engineer / loadmaster in these planes. He was a NCO for the Peruvian Air Force during the 80's. Our AN-26s weren't so good for the mountains, so Perú bought AN-32 instead.
What happened with our old An-26s? Well, Peruvian crews dropped them in Cuba. I wonder if some of those were still flying by 2013 :)

Greets from the homeland of AN-26 Russia! I've flew on Antonov AN-24 2 times and AN-26 once. A lovely sovietic plane I must say. Hmmm... Nostalgia

I flew once a windowless AN24 from Santiago to La Habana at night. We got into a nasty storm, and it was such a terrible experience that it took a long time to fly again.

+Fran Camino: My worst experience was on a Cubana flight from Nassau (The Bahamas) to Havana several years ago. When the plane was about to land, we got caught up in some sort of storm and it felt like we were going to crash. It was really scary and everyone started to scream.

That ground crew at 9:59 seemed like walking so near the propeller blades was like nothing!

Never been on one but I would like the experience sometime. Cool paint job. I do like the looks of this aircraft and I'm sure it flies very well.

Amazing footage Wilfredo, and thank you so much for sharing. I would love to be PIC or even a passenger on one of these birds, if i was given the chance. Great video...well edited, and the music at the beginning is perfect. :)

Excellent video . As if I'm one of the passengers of that Russian bird . Never been on board AN-26 , ever .
It's a Russian version of the Dutch made Fokker 27 and Fokker 50 only a bit rougher . But still I damn like it !

Thank You Tyers . Of course , all Soviet/Russian-made airplanes , land vehicles , vessels and weapons or weapon system are ugly looking and tend to break down easily . They don't care about quality .

At minute 8:26 you can hear me ask "what is the cleanest window in this airplane" and the flight attendant proceeded to inform me that the airplane only has 6 windows, and he specified to me that my sit would be 9C. The airplane was packed and I was literally the second passenger to board it. My intentions were to pick my desired sit like I had been able to do in prior flights. But this time they decided to treat the airplane like an airplane instead of a public bus with no assigned seats.

Very nice! It's too bad that the chance to ride on these old Soviet types is rapidly disappearing. I'm wondering, though.... What was an American Airlines 737-800 doing in Holguin?
