I fell in love with Tasha Tudor’s books and illustrations when I was 7 and discovered “Becky’s Birthday” at the neighborhood library. My sister and I tried hard to get our parents to promise that they would give us a birthday like Becky’s, especially with the moonlit picnic followed by the birthday cake and smaller cakes lit up and floating down a stream on little homemade rafts. It never happened. “The Corgiville Fair” is my favorite of all of her books. I give it as a gift to little children in my family on both sides as well as the children of friends. Tudor’s illustrations are hilarious as is the story. It starts by stating that Corgiville is east of Vermont and west of New Hampshire which is actually the middle of the Connecticut River. Every summer when we go to New Hampshire and Vermont we always yell”Corgiville!” when we’re halfway across the river which forms the boundary between the two states. I just found out about her farm and plan to visit it the next time I’m in New England. BTW I met TT nearly 30 years ago when she came to my town to give a talk about her old doll collection at our local doll museum. After her lecture I was fortunate to be able to sit by her when the museum held a special dolls’ tea party. She was such a fascinating person to visit with.
