For those of you who do not know what Zerodha does, it is basically a stockbroker that offers the cheapest brokerage rates for futures and options, commodity trading, equity, and mutual funds. To understand how well they are doing let us take a look at their numbers for FY 2020:
Total net revenue: 2776 Cr
Total operating revenue: 1034 Cr
Total expenses: 500 Cr
Profit: 443 Cr
Here is the biggest reason why it’s mindblowing
Total money raised : 0
Valuation : 1B USD +
Okay, so was this made possible for a bootstrapped startup? Bootstrapped startups are startups that do not raise money, just like my company Think School is. To understand how Zerodha did this watch this video till the end.
Zerodha is definitely the best case study in the Indian Startups ecosystem. From being completely bootstrapped to funding, incubating and grooming a number of other fintech start-ups like Smallcase, LearnApp, etc. and now with plans to launch in UAE as well, Zerodha and Kamath brothers have been a great inspiration for budding entrepreneurs!!❤️❤️

This is just another copy pasted idea of us stock trading apps....no innovation here....Zerodha invested millions in marketing actually initially....but being the first one in smooth interface and with no competitors helped them gain good speed. Robinhood and other apps which are working in us are way better than Zerodha. This video was just a clickbait.

Zerodha was founded in 2010, while the US counterpart, Robinhood, you mentioned was founded in 2014. That's a 4 year age gap.

You should also highlight that the main reason that zerodha was able to maintain consumer loyalty was the absence of ads and the zero commissions which would have been impossible if they were accountable to outside investors.
The 2 major lessons that were missing here are:
1) that entrepreneurs should try and avoid outside funding as much as possible as this tends to dilute the founders' vision and creative control.
2) The second one here is to find a moneymaking niche that will be able to compensate for your seemingly money draining operation done to transform the ecosystem. In case of zerodha, the main earning of it comes from intraday and options trading which these guys have done so well and easy that they can afford to keep equity delivery and mf fees at 0 which is frankly the big money drain for all discount brokerages and the main reason why all of their competitors are running at loss and burning cash.
