Greetings from South Georgia USA. I live about 45 minutes from Okefenokee Swamp. We have hot Summers and lots of humidity. We also have a few really cold Winter nights at least every other year - coldest I remember is two nights in a row of 17 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a great video and I have watched it several times. I just purchased three Better-Gro Cattleyas in 2” pots from our local Loews. They were only $10 USD each and the leaves look very healthy. They were really well-packed, completely encased in protective netting with wire hoop to keep them from getting damaged. These are my first Cattleyas. I am watching your helpful videos today, trying to decide on medium for reporting either medium bark or LECA. I am almost sure I have decided against sphagnum moss for this variety. I have some new 4.5” breathable slotted pots, I am hoping they are small enough since these are in 2” pots right now. Currently they also have a layer of green moss - my first time seeing this. I love my orchids and I added a Cattleya to my orchid family about six months ago. I purchased it in full bloom and it was beautiful. I watched this video twice until I felt comfortable and was now sure that it needed to be re-potted. The steps provided were excellent and I know just what to look for as it begins to bloom again. I live in a very warm climate so I grow them on our lanai. Last year I purchased all new pots from ' Repotme' and all of my orchids now have new homes. I had some bad luck with Cattleyas here as they needed repotting soon but the plant would always shed all old roots in a new pot. After I repot one when this video came out, it grew two plump canes and the roots have spread all around, a lot of the tips peaking near the sidea of the pot. I'm so happy!
I have a HUGE Cattleya. It's in a 14 inch terracotta pot outside and it fills it completely up. I bring it inside in the winter. It was given to me at least 15- 18 years ago by an elderly real estate client of mine who had to move in with his niece in Kansas. We are in Houston, Texas. How do you separate or divide one...or is that even possible without damaging the orchid?
Bought one from the plant store today, it's my first ever of this type. It was originally planted in wet dirt covered in green moss. Instantly repotted it at home with bark

Hope yours are doing well a year later!!! I got my first one today (Proc. Golden Peacock). Curious how long it will take for a Seedling plant with a few leaves and some decent roots formed to mature with bulbs and bloom. I've just purchased 2 very small catts plants , these are new to me. Loved the video on their care. One is orange and the other one is green. They are very small, each in a 2 inch pot. The potting med seems dense to me. Thinking of repotting them.
This was really useful for a relatively new cattleya grower like me! A greenhouse in the UK isn’t the best place for cattleyas! Nevertheless, I’m giving it a go. Great video.
Hi Danny! I just found your TH-cam channel last weekend and I find it so helpful and informative even though I’m already familiar with phalaenopsis orchids. I just got my first RLC and I need to repot, as the roots are growing over the side of the current pot. I am concerned about repotting at the right time. It currently has a new, well- developed spike (I’m not sure if it is fully developed though, but it is pretty big and is growing a new sheath). I’m a bit scared to repot (I don’t want to set it back before it has a chance to bloom this fall). What do you think would be a good time to repot? Should I fertilize after to minimize shock? Any help would be appreciated, thank you!
Great video. My Elmhurst Catt has bloomed when I bought it but hasn’t had any blooms in over a year. It’s on my East facing terrace in South Florida. It’s a healthy plant but no spikes

Fantastic video. Just so you know, there are a few Cattleya species (and I guess hybrids too) that tolerate and even thrive in cooler, or at least more seasonal, climates. Cattleya intermedia is a great example, there are many people growing them as backyard plants in my city, directly mounted on live trees. And I live in Buenos Aires which although considerably humid and not too cold in winter it's not tropical either. Just so you get as a refference that might be usefull for comparing in your area, many Oncidiums (bifolium mainly, which is native to the area, but many others too like flexuosum and fimbriatum), Miltonia flavescens, Brassavola tuberculata, Dendrobiums (nobile, moschatum, loddigesii, kingianum), also grow well here (also Phaius, Bletilla and Cymbidiums).
My goodness! Thank you so much for this!! I just recently purchased a Cattleya Orchid at Lowe’s and it was the only Red one left but it looked like it needed assistance. The pot it was in, the medium smelled musty and terrible. So I replaced the medium and clipped away the rotting roots. It seems to be doing well and there’s a new leaf growing! I’m so excited to see these babies bloom and now I’m inspired to get more! 😂
I was checking the comments because I just got my first cattleya from Lowe's and it's in regular soil. I've had it for 3 days and it looks fine but now I'm thinking I should repot it🤔

I have majority of cattleyas in collection, they r the easiest Orchids to grow, and they were also the first to adapt in semihydro,i grow them in semihydro, and just lovee it..

You've given me renewed confidence to try catlayas. My situation is not ideal for orchids in general, and catlayas in particular. Lack of light during the winter is the biggest problem, and the winters tend to be cold (typically, home temp below 18c). I suppose I could install grow lights and turn up the heat, but not sure my landlord would approve. In any event, I I'll be trying to use one window that gets more western light during the winter, and is near a radiator. The humidity is relatively high year-round. During the summer, I could put some plants outside on a small patio, which worked well for my cymbidiums last year. Could you suggest anything I've overlooked here? Can you suggest any orchids which might appreciate my environment? Keep running, toots! I look forward to your missives. - Stephen in Santander
Hi, even if temperatures drop a bit in winter, it's still ok. The Catts might slow down a bit, but they will pick up growth in summer. If you can provide bright light, even supplement with artificial in winter, they should do great. Careful to shelter them from direct sun when outside in the heat!
Cattleyas are also my favourite orchids, the favourite species in my collections are Cattleya warscewiczii, with its huge flowers, the largest of any orchid species; Cattleya maxima, because tends to bloom for my birthday, in November, when not many orchids are in bloom; Cattleya trianaei for its very long lasting flowers (almost two months); and Cattleya intermedia alba, for its wonderful fragrance. Of course I also love many Cattleya hybrids!!!

I have a cattleya that I had in a terra cotta orchid pot in bark that never thrived for two years. The leaves fell off leaving a bunch of naked canes and the leaves that were left were always shriveled and yellowish. Then after seeing a friend’s cattleya setup that were thriving I decided to replicate it. I repotted my cattleya in a large wide glass container (like a really big fish bowl) without drainage holes and the medium was a mixture of peat moss, perlite, and small bark pieces, and topped off with a layer of coconut fiber. I lightly water it once a week, feed it once every two weeks with a 1/4 diluted all purpose orchid fertilizer, and since the container is glass I can see the amount of liquid collected at the bottom. I have it next to a western facing window with a sheer curtain which is bathed in sunlight 12 hours a day (I live in Northern California). Lo and behold, the cattleya started shooting up cane after cane, and the leaves are green and healthy. It’s been over 6 months since I repotted it and it’s healthy as can be. I can’t explain it either. I’m just so happy I was able to rescue this baby. Its flower is bright yellow with a magenta lip. Have you ever heard of such a set up for a cattleya? I’m really interested in your professional opinion on this. Thanks for the great videos btw.
Hi, the problem with drainless containers is that they will accumulate salt and organics in time and it's really hard to flush them. They can do great for a while and then everything can fall apart really fast and sudden. If you know how to manage this, then everything is possible. If not, just be mindful it could happen. It's personally not a setup for me, but I'm sure others are happy with it ☺️
@@MissOrchidGirl You are so right. I decided to heed your expert advice and dismantle the closed glass set up. The cattleya looks so healthy above ground but below it had no roots! There were lots of dead and decaying roots but barely any discernible healthy roots. The medium didn't smell at all and it didn't look rotten. I am totally confused how it looks so healthy with multiple new large sprouting canes and healthy green leaves. I trimmed off all the dead roots, gave it a good wash, and repotted it in a mix of mostly medium bark chips with some pumice and sphagnum moss, this time in a well draining pot. I placed the pot in the same glass vessel that used to house the cattleya with a 1 inch layer of gravel on the bottom and added water for extra humidity. The glass vessel is shallow enough to allow for some air circulation.

I live in Bali and grow orchids outdoors. I live on the coast and BLC Cattleya grow best here, they are recommended for the lowlands of Indonesia as they prefer more heat. LC Cattleya grow better in the mountainous regions, they like it a bit cooler.
......another awesome video to start the weekend. :) Thanks Danny. I think I overdid it with sphagnum moss when I re-pot my orchids almost 2 weeks ago. I "tried" your technique (chaining the sphagnum moss throughout the pot w/ bark) but I think I used too much moss. The reason I say that is because I watered it on the day I re-potted (12 days ago to be exact), and I have not had to water it since. The moss has stayed moist for the last 12 days. It's a big difference from when I was watering/soaking it basically everyday. It is winter where and I am at, but of course my orchids are indoors. Is it normal for the moss to stay moist that long? :) Thanks again Danny, for all your help.
Hi, it's a bit long for a Catt indeed, but in summer the moss might just be ideal! Here's my idea: just run some water through the pot at your next watering, just a few seconds. In this way you will deliver a small quantity of water and practically not saturate the moss, but just dampen it. It will hydrate the orchid but it will dry faster! Hope it works! ☺️

The green support is called a “tomato cage” and they’re available at any nursery or hardware store. I’ve only seen the orchid clips at “Repotme.com”; they included one as a gift with my pot order. You can substitute string or cut-up-pantyhose as ties, but clips are more convenient...

Just came home from a wonderful orchid show/sale in Westminster Mall in California. Bought 3 cattleyas. All I’m bloom. They were all in 4” pots w roots hanging over the top and coming out from the bottom which indicates to me that perhaps we amateurs repot unnecessarily as long as the medium looks good. What are your thoughts on that?

Hi! I live in N FL and recently started moving my 4 small cattleyas outside gradually. They already have new growth so I'm excited. My question is this: yesterday and today they got rained on so they are thoroughly watered, I was not home to take them in from the downpours. Should I keep them in for a few days and let them dry out? Should I continue to acclimate them to the outside light but put them somewhere where they won't get wet again? I want to have success so I'm nervous about putting them outside when it comes to water. Thank you! I've learned so much from your videos!
Great video, this one was truly necessary as all the knowledge you had shared on Cattleyas was split into various videos, often old ones 👍🏻 Beautiful images as well! Just to complete, I'd appreciate if you could say a word regarding photoperiodism but aside of your mossiae I'm not sure if you have any other photoperiodic Cattleya and you might never have truly looked into it. Apparently, it's possible to trick those into blooming through monitoring day lenght with artificial light but I admit this is not truly for beginners. The thing is it's difficult to know how those photoperiodic orchids would detect living room lights (or not, even pros seem to contradict themselves) and if they absolutely need less than 12 hours of light (or more) to be able to bloom. Some sources seem to say that blooming might be weakened or even aborted if they get too many hours of light (or not enough if they're long day lenght ones)... Have you got any reliable knowledge about that? Short day lenght Cattleyas would include labiata, gaskeliana, trianae, schroederae, mossiae and maybe one or two others... When it's growing and approaching blooming, how many hours of light does your mossiae get? Thanks again, I've been following you for two years now :)
Hi, based on my research on natural habitats of Cattleyas, I do not believe photoperiod is any influence on them. In your example the mossiae is native to Venezuela. Checking daylength throughout the year www.timebie.com/sun/caracasve.php?q=12 we can see that variation is minimal and, in my opinion, unable to produce major effects on these Orchids. Most Cattleya species do come from Central America regions and, as we know, close to the Ecuator there is no meaningful day/night variation throughout the year. So I would not feel comfortable including photoperiod as an influence on blooms in my tutorials about Cattleyas ☺️ as you may know I do supplement light in winter to get it to the 12 hour mark as well, so many of my Cattleyas do not receive a difference in length throughout the year either. You can see the blooming results on my channel. I know sources might tell different stories, they might have their reasons, but because I don't believe they are correct I cannot lie about what I believe on my channel, that's all.

I had some bad luck with Cattleyas here as they needed repotting soon but the plant would always shed all old roots in a new pot. After I repot one when this video came out, it grew two plump canes and the roots have spread all around, a lot of the tips peaking near the sidea of the pot. I'm so happy!

I have a HUGE Cattleya. It's in a 14 inch terracotta pot outside and it fills it completely up. I bring it inside in the winter. It was given to me at least 15- 18 years ago by an elderly real estate client of mine who had to move in with his niece in Kansas. We are in Houston, Texas. How do you separate or divide one...or is that even possible without damaging the orchid?
Bought one from the plant store today, it's my first ever of this type. It was originally planted in wet dirt covered in green moss. Instantly repotted it at home with bark

I've just purchased 2 very small catts plants , these are new to me. Loved the video on their care. One is orange and the other one is green. They are very small, each in a 2 inch pot. The potting med seems dense to me. Thinking of repotting them.

Hi Danny! I just found your TH-cam channel last weekend and I find it so helpful and informative even though I’m already familiar with phalaenopsis orchids. I just got my first RLC and I need to repot, as the roots are growing over the side of the current pot. I am concerned about repotting at the right time. It currently has a new, well- developed spike (I’m not sure if it is fully developed though, but it is pretty big and is growing a new sheath). I’m a bit scared to repot (I don’t want to set it back before it has a chance to bloom this fall). What do you think would be a good time to repot? Should I fertilize after to minimize shock? Any help would be appreciated, thank you!
Great video. My Elmhurst Catt has bloomed when I bought it but hasn’t had any blooms in over a year. It’s on my East facing terrace in South Florida. It’s a healthy plant but no spikes

Just so you know, there are a few Cattleya species (and I guess hybrids too) that tolerate and even thrive in cooler, or at least more seasonal, climates.
Cattleya intermedia is a great example, there are many people growing them as backyard plants in my city, directly mounted on live trees. And I live in Buenos Aires which although considerably humid and not too cold in winter it's not tropical either.
Just so you get as a refference that might be usefull for comparing in your area, many Oncidiums (bifolium mainly, which is native to the area, but many others too like flexuosum and fimbriatum), Miltonia flavescens, Brassavola tuberculata, Dendrobiums (nobile, moschatum, loddigesii, kingianum), also grow well here (also Phaius, Bletilla and Cymbidiums).
My goodness! Thank you so much for this!! I just recently purchased a Cattleya Orchid at Lowe’s and it was the only Red one left but it looked like it needed assistance. The pot it was in, the medium smelled musty and terrible. So I replaced the medium and clipped away the rotting roots. It seems to be doing well and there’s a new leaf growing! I’m so excited to see these babies bloom and now I’m inspired to get more! 😂

I have majority of cattleyas in collection, they r the easiest Orchids to grow, and they were also the first to adapt in semihydro,i grow them in semihydro, and just lovee it..
My parents have them growing outside all round the year but they live in the tropics LOl. I have to grow them inside! Great video.

You've given me renewed confidence to try catlayas. My situation is not ideal for orchids in general, and catlayas in particular. Lack of light during the winter is the biggest problem, and the winters tend to be cold (typically, home temp below 18c).
I suppose I could install grow lights and turn up the heat, but not sure my landlord would approve. In any event, I I'll be trying to use one window that gets more western light during the winter, and is near a radiator. The humidity is relatively high year-round. During the summer, I could put some plants outside on a small patio, which worked well for my cymbidiums last year. Could you suggest anything I've overlooked here? Can you suggest any orchids which might appreciate my environment? Keep running, toots! I look forward to your missives. - Stephen in Santander
Hi, even if temperatures drop a bit in winter, it's still ok. The Catts might slow down a bit, but they will pick up growth in summer. If you can provide bright light, even supplement with artificial in winter, they should do great. Careful to shelter them from direct sun when outside in the heat!
Cattleyas are also my favourite orchids, the favourite species in my collections are Cattleya warscewiczii, with its huge flowers, the largest of any orchid species; Cattleya maxima, because tends to bloom for my birthday, in November, when not many orchids are in bloom; Cattleya trianaei for its very long lasting flowers (almost two months); and Cattleya intermedia alba, for its wonderful fragrance. Of course I also love many Cattleya hybrids!!!

I have a cattleya that I had in a terra cotta orchid pot in bark that never thrived for two years. The leaves fell off leaving a bunch of naked canes and the leaves that were left were always shriveled and yellowish. Then after seeing a friend’s cattleya setup that were thriving I decided to replicate it. I repotted my cattleya in a large wide glass container (like a really big fish bowl) without drainage holes and the medium was a mixture of peat moss, perlite, and small bark pieces, and topped off with a layer of coconut fiber. I lightly water it once a week, feed it once every two weeks with a 1/4 diluted all purpose orchid fertilizer, and since the container is glass I can see the amount of liquid collected at the bottom. I have it next to a western facing window with a sheer curtain which is bathed in sunlight 12 hours a day (I live in Northern California). Lo and behold, the cattleya started shooting up cane after cane, and the leaves are green and healthy. It’s been over 6 months since I repotted it and it’s healthy as can be. I can’t explain it either. I’m just so happy I was able to rescue this baby. Its flower is bright yellow with a magenta lip. Have you ever heard of such a set up for a cattleya? I’m really interested in your professional opinion on this. Thanks for the great videos btw.
Hi, the problem with drainless containers is that they will accumulate salt and organics in time and it's really hard to flush them. They can do great for a while and then everything can fall apart really fast and sudden. If you know how to manage this, then everything is possible. If not, just be mindful it could happen. It's personally not a setup for me, but I'm sure others are happy with it ☺️
@@MissOrchidGirl You are so right. I decided to heed your expert advice and dismantle the closed glass set up. The cattleya looks so healthy above ground but below it had no roots! There were lots of dead and decaying roots but barely any discernible healthy roots. The medium didn't smell at all and it didn't look rotten. I am totally confused how it looks so healthy with multiple new large sprouting canes and healthy green leaves. I trimmed off all the dead roots, gave it a good wash, and repotted it in a mix of mostly medium bark chips with some pumice and sphagnum moss, this time in a well draining pot. I placed the pot in the same glass vessel that used to house the cattleya with a 1 inch layer of gravel on the bottom and added water for extra humidity. The glass vessel is shallow enough to allow for some air circulation.

I live in Bali and grow orchids outdoors. I live on the coast and BLC Cattleya grow best here, they are recommended for the lowlands of Indonesia as they prefer more heat. LC Cattleya grow better in the mountainous regions, they like it a bit cooler.

I think I overdid it with sphagnum moss when I re-pot my orchids almost 2 weeks ago. I "tried" your technique (chaining the sphagnum moss throughout the pot w/ bark) but I think I used too much moss. The reason I say that is because I watered it on the day I re-potted (12 days ago to be exact), and I have not had to water it since. The moss has stayed moist for the last 12 days. It's a big difference from when I was watering/soaking it basically everyday. It is winter where and I am at, but of course my orchids are indoors. Is it normal for the moss to stay moist that long? :) Thanks again Danny, for all your help.
Hi, it's a bit long for a Catt indeed, but in summer the moss might just be ideal! Here's my idea: just run some water through the pot at your next watering, just a few seconds. In this way you will deliver a small quantity of water and practically not saturate the moss, but just dampen it. It will hydrate the orchid but it will dry faster! Hope it works! ☺️

Where did you get the green half basket?
The green support is called a “tomato cage” and they’re available at any nursery or hardware store. I’ve only seen the orchid clips at “Repotme.com”; they included one as a gift with my pot order. You can substitute string or cut-up-pantyhose as ties, but clips are more convenient...

Just came home from a wonderful orchid show/sale in Westminster Mall in California. Bought 3 cattleyas. All I’m bloom.
They were all in 4” pots w roots hanging over the top and coming out from the bottom which indicates to me that perhaps we amateurs repot unnecessarily as long as the medium looks good.
What are your thoughts on that?

Hi! I live in N FL and recently started moving my 4 small cattleyas outside gradually. They already have new growth so I'm excited. My question is this: yesterday and today they got rained on so they are thoroughly watered, I was not home to take them in from the downpours. Should I keep them in for a few days and let them dry out? Should I continue to acclimate them to the outside light but put them somewhere where they won't get wet again? I want to have success so I'm nervous about putting them outside when it comes to water. Thank you! I've learned so much from your videos!

Beautiful images as well! Just to complete, I'd appreciate if you could say a word regarding photoperiodism but aside of your mossiae I'm not sure if you have any other photoperiodic Cattleya and you might never have truly looked into it.
Apparently, it's possible to trick those into blooming through monitoring day lenght with artificial light but I admit this is not truly for beginners. The thing is it's difficult to know how those photoperiodic orchids would detect living room lights (or not, even pros seem to contradict themselves) and if they absolutely need less than 12 hours of light (or more) to be able to bloom. Some sources seem to say that blooming might be weakened or even aborted if they get too many hours of light (or not enough if they're long day lenght ones)...
Have you got any reliable knowledge about that?
Short day lenght Cattleyas would include labiata, gaskeliana, trianae, schroederae, mossiae and maybe one or two others...
When it's growing and approaching blooming, how many hours of light does your mossiae get?

Hi, based on my research on natural habitats of Cattleyas, I do not believe photoperiod is any influence on them. In your example the mossiae is native to Venezuela. Checking daylength throughout the year www.timebie.com/sun/caracasve.php?q=12 we can see that variation is minimal and, in my opinion, unable to produce major effects on these Orchids. Most Cattleya species do come from Central America regions and, as we know, close to the Ecuator there is no meaningful day/night variation throughout the year. So I would not feel comfortable including photoperiod as an influence on blooms in my tutorials about Cattleyas ☺️ as you may know I do supplement light in winter to get it to the 12 hour mark as well, so many of my Cattleyas do not receive a difference in length throughout the year either. You can see the blooming results on my channel. I know sources might tell different stories, they might have their reasons, but because I don't believe they are correct I cannot lie about what I believe on my channel, that's all.
