I like it! It's refreshing to hear the honesty.
Other racial demographics, particularly whites, have largely been convinced to very, very carefully lie publicly (and often even privately) about any non-politicly correct opinions they may have regarding race. Black people are the only demographic in America given carte blanche freedom to say whatever they think, no matter how disparaging or hateful, toward any other race that they wish.
I WANT to hear it. We should be striving toward that standard of open honesty for every race. Racism will never go away, it is an intrinsic part of the human condition, and we will never surpass our difficulties with it by trying ever more assiduously to publicly hide it.

Telling a young boy that he's doomed right off the bat, that his chances of success are very small, that the system is designed for him to fail is not the way to go. I think that's just as harmful as telling him that racism doesn't exist. Both extremes are bad.

What's interesting about these street conversations is that talking to random people allows access to their unfiltered thoughts. What they spontaneously believe without prior reflection. And so, it provides a glimpse into the prevailing mindset, cultural narrative, and the collective fictions that society propagates. What's particularly intriguing in this specific case is that these African Americans, all of whom seem quite friendly and open, grew up in a context where they were taught that they were second-class citizens and that the system was against them. It's quite understandable: the history of the United States is still freshly marked by segregation, which some grandparents or great-grandparents still remember. Society has evolved too quickly for the collective narrative to catch up. Today, it's the opposite: the system is actively working to rectify its mistake, and numerous measures are in place to favor (yes) Black individuals in the system with the affirmative action, which is essentially positive discrimination, or with all the diversity and inclusion policies all arround campuses and the corporate world.
Furthermore, the notion that whites are generally racist is a fallacy. Whites are the racial category that self-loathes the most: they are the only ones with a negative self-opinion, meaning below zero, while all other racial groups are above the bar at varying percentages. So, far from being racist, today's white individuals are feeling remorseful for a situation to which they, in reality, didn't contribute at all.
However, what a pity it is for these individuals to be so deeply ingrained with these limiting beliefs! It's impossible for this not to have an impact on their future - growing up believing they are destined to fail in a racist society. What a psychological hindrance, what a stumbling block, when in reality, that's not the case! Especially for individuals like this boy, who seem to be so full of potential. But kudos to Peter Boghossian for skillfully leading this conversation (and all the others), which will undoubtedly make them reconsider their assumptions and perhaps encourage them to fact-check their statements with a discerning eye.

When I was on government assistance, no one gave me a break. They checked EVERYTHING. If I made two hundred bucks freelance, my welfare would be reduced. So...where was my white privilege all that time? In fact, government assistance programs are designed to help POC a lot more, with grants that go towards them, helping them buy first-time homes, etc. Right now in California, there's a program that is helping ONLY POC buy houses, the cap being a house at 1.2 million. My privilege is I don't have to worry about that, but women do. They watch and react to videos of subjects from comedy to history to current affairs. They’ve watched a Thomas Sowell clip and it’s so cool to see them learn and discuss things that are mostly never talked about. People are taught the same narratives and talking points that we hear from the people in this video and these claims are usually unfounded or at least exaggerated. I found it awesome to watch these guys learning facts that have been hidden away. I think Peter's resolve in these conversations is admirable because it isn't easy for people to see things from a perspective they haven't experienced and we all have a tendency to view issues outside of any sort of moral standard and view it through the lens of the ethic's direct impact on ourselves.

I was invited by a friend of mine who took a class from him during his time at PSU. We had a coffee with Peter and spoke to him for a long time. You can easily look up Peters politics and beliefs, but this isn't the point of his videos.

And I agree with that sentiment 100%; the only point of contention I've ever had with some people who make that argument is how much that failure/victim mindset is self-perpetuated by the black community and how big a percentage of the problem it is.

This is told to them by their parents and grandparents, their politicians and community leaders, and by music and media.
It comes from all sources. And what the ears hear, and the eyes see, the mind believes.

I had my car towed 2 months ago by a Hispanic man who came to America illegally. He owned the truck we were riding in, as well as two other trucks in his small company. He also had just purchased a limo so that he could start a small limo business on the weekends. We passed his home as he was towing my car, it was a VERY large home probably in the $450k-$500k range. In the State of Alabama very large homes can be purchased for this amount. I asked him what he thought about America, since he was a 1st generation immigrant. He stated that he loved America, that he was able to work hard and provide for his family in ways he could never do in Mexico. He then stated that he could not in his mind understand why people come to America, or live in America, and expect free handouts. He even went into a rant about some of his own countrymen who have come to America and have refused to work hard, thus they stay in poverty. This guy got it, he understood, even better than me, what it takes to succeed and how to do it. When I got out of the vehicle I had a new respect for those that work hard in this country, those that refuse to be coddled by the government, and refuse to live off handouts. If this guy could succeed and start from nothing then there is ZERO excuse for the rest of us.

Our privliged access to all of these life luxuries??? Are they victims or success stories? Me and my wife home schooled 4 children, saved our money for their education, quality food, modest clothing, and sacrificed our 'best' youngest years simply in each others humbled but loving company to pay off a mortgage while others (of all types) splurged on dining out, new car leases, vacations multiple times a year, and so on. In both incidents the facts were ignored by the media and what amounted to minor squabbles were turned into national news and were made to fit the narrative. In my opinion the establishment intentionally incited racial divisions and riots for political purposes. (Mainly against Trump and his supporters) It won't be easy to put the genie back in the bag.

Incredible how glaringly obvious what Peter says at 30:20, or what he wrote in the firsr pinned comment, is not taken to heart by many in the comments. One of the tenets of How to Have Impossibe Conversations is to avoid being combative. The goal isn't to challenge or win in a conversation; it is to understand their position, ask them probing questions to allow them to examine their viewpoints and to always remain open to having your own views challenged and possibly even changed if presented with convincing enough evidence or information. Overtly challenging them puts the people in the conversation on the defence and less likely to challenge their own beliefs when they leave the converation. Peter ends at the perfect time when he has planted enough seeds to get them to examine their strongly held positions on their own time and terms.
What I have found extremely interesting is the willingness of Peter to let go of any attachment to an outcome, especially how this quality has evolved over time as his street epistemology method has evolved. Truly an admirable goal to work towards in my own communication skills.

I agree to an extent. I think if we all would have the possibility to have a conversation with these people we would be more socratic in our approach. But since we are only passive observers of this event that took place in the past, I think it's fair to criticize some of the statements that have been made by those people in the past (especially the blatant racism and sexism). Additionally, and most unfortunately, Peter's audience is probably aligning very much with his personal views most of the time so it's to be expected that people will say what Peter might have thought but didn't say during his interviews.

I bought and read (well, listened) to his book as well, and while I'm not disagreeing with you completely in your assessment? I AM curious as to whether or not you recognize that he didn't "plant enough seeds" in this instance at all (no pushback, critique, leading socratic questions, or "devil's advocacy", in any capacity for these people to critically assess, let alone justify, their positions, or what it would take for their minds to be changed by a small amount). Just a hot mic for "white ppl think black ppl are inherently dangerous", "we built this country for free", and "obviously, cops shoot unarmed black men". He didn't even bother correcting the first lady in here when she kept collectivizing, and calling him white, which I've seen him do on numerous occasions. I'm NOT attributing intent, by any means here, as he very well may have just gotten distracted with all the tangents that kept creeping in? I AM saying that this wasn't his usual video style (at least, of the street epistemology variety).

The tall dude was almost coming around though, like when he was asked "what resources would help". He answered that "we need to tell black kids that they're not destined to fail"(paraphrased) And he's right. But they're not told that. They're told that cops are actively hunting them, so they're automatically on edge in any encounter, increasing chances of things going south. They're told that white people hate them, increasing animosity and violence. They're told that the "system" is against them, so why even try, right? Just go for the easy money.

Up until 1965, the United States was 90% white. So, in a way you _can_ say that the USA was "designed" to privilege white people, but that is because culturally and institutionally, the USA was built _by_ white people. That white culture is why so many people from around the world want to immigrate here, too, which is something _no one_ wants to talk about. If the entire country was like Detroit, _no one_ would want to come here. We're gonna find out how this works real soon, too, because the under 15 children cohort is white minority.

Black History Month was recognized in 1976 by Gerald Ford and that is the only involvement outside of the black community. Black History Week was started by Carter G. Woodward in February to coincide with the birth date of Frederick Douglas. It later expanded into the entire month of February within the black community.
Saying "they gave us the shortest month" suggests to me something that is all too common. People start with a premise they thing is true (e.g. systemic oppression) and then they assume a bunch of other things must also be true. If systemic oppression is true, and it's true that February is the shortest month, then it must be because of systemic oppression that Black History Month is in February.

Where else would they be taught that? With that mindset in place from a young age, its no wonder things go the way they do in some situations. They are learning this stuff with no recourse, its something that is implanted in to them from a young age and seems to be something that is taught across the board. That is whats setting them up to fail.
Some extra education, some showing of other perspectives could really go a long way but at the young ages where this is important, the opportunity is being missed. The chance to show them otherwise is sailing on by and no-one is doing anything to correct it.
