@@JamesRBurnsVLOG Haha sorry. That was a reply to another TH-camr on another channel. It was 62 year old guy looking for a "beautiful young girlfriend" in Colombia. Haha.
OK I'm being drawn over to the dark (mono) side! You had me at 11:42. And then again with the horseshoe. I suppose, given the routine solid greyness of my local patch, I'd at least be able to get more out of my work, more often. Very inspirational, James. I really appreciate that you go to so much trouble with these ... 👍😀
Thanks David, I can feel you’re slowly getting the mono bug. Once you conform there will be no looking back! Anglesey in Black n White, the desire is too tempting! Really appreciate it matey. I enjoy doing these and putting the effort in, its turning into more than a fad. 👍👍😄
Came across your videos and immediately recognised the hallmark of a real artist--or poet, if one is a fan of Robert Burns (as I am) or of a writer like Sir Walter Scott. This video, replete with numerous scenes of matchless beauty (3:15; 4:50; 6:50 etc) was like balm for my 72-y.o. Covid-scarred soul, here in India. Thank you, James...thank you. Stay well, atb and keep going...
Take care Subroto, there is hope. Appreciate your kind comments. This video is going back a while now but still pleased it offers entertainment to many. Be safe and thank you 👍👍
Nice images, especially the first one. Looks like a cracking place. With that in mind, I've been thinking of going up Helvellyn again, last time I went via Striding Edge but this time I'm taking the dogs and imo, the edge is no place for hounds, this time I'm thinking of either going via Patterdale and up Dollywagon Pike via Grisedale Tarn or parking at Dunmail raise and going that way to the tarn, I know you didn't go up but any idea what the route is like?
Cheers Mikey for you comment first of all. I’ve never been on Striding Edge but I did Helvellyn from Withburn, Thirlmere side. It’s a fairly easy route to be honest. Dunmail raise is the shorter route.👍
Aye, I was leaning more towards Dunmail Raise, then Dollywaggon. Striding Edge isn't actually as bad as it looks to be honest, a bit exposed in bad weather and far too busy at times but I just couldn't put my dogs through it, especially my 13 year old lurcher, even though she's a mountain veteran. Right, that's my mind made up! all I need now is the weather and the light :D
I climbed up Helvellyn on a bank holiday and the numbers on Striding Edge have put me off, such a shame really. I will go one day and try and get a good shot of it, probably via Birkhouse Moor. Have fun, fingers crossed for the light.
James R Burns yes I’m looking forward to autumn too. Hoping to get to the Lake District to shoot some autumn or winter stuff 👍. Really like it there. Ta
Nice video James, looks like it turned out nicer than the forecast said, at least the thunder didn't happen. You got some good shots in the moody weather!
Thanks Adam, I kept my eyes peeled to the forecast before I set off. I got lucky until a deluge when coming down from Seat Sandal. My GoreTex coat needs replacing, I got drenched. Quite pleased with the shots but it would be good to be there for a sunrise. 👍👍😄
At least it was just one downpour and not start to finish haha Makes for the moodier photos though, you've got a good excuse to get back up there again now then 👍
James, I recently started to watch your instructive videos and can only said that I wished I would has started sooner. When knowledge and inspiration comes together it is rewarding. Thank you .

James R Burns we stay at Coniston and then travel every day. I want to revisit low water as I took an image there at Easter, but wasn’t happy with my composition. I’m off to Dublin on Saturday and as soon as I get back I’ll start planning for October. See you on the 8th mate 👍
Thanks for the shoutout and instagram share James 👍. I have just returned from a family trip to Cornwall and managed to capture some nice black & white images using the moody skies and dramatic seascapes to full effect. My favourite of this vlog was the tarn shot, very nice mate
Hi James, Thanks for another great video which was beautifully produced. You really suffered for your art on this trip with the hard terrain and heavy rain, but the photographs you got surely made it worthwhile. The first photo at 4:47 is superb, it is both powerful and dramatic. looking forward to your next vlog.
Thanks Andy and thanks again to your featured comment. It was hard going but now that I’ve now got a feel of what to expect, I will return. Without the downpours, it would have been a great day. The clouds definitely helped the first shot and wouldn’t have been the same without. Cheers again Andy 👍👍😬

Great video, James! Very top fine art photos, you have a great eye for b+w. Love the tilted horizon and the river wandering one after the horseshoe. Cheers!
A great video as always, there’s always something special in your channel. When I look at your work the fist word that comes not my mind is 'soul', you feel the image and the essence of what you are capturing. An eye for an image is a wonderful thing, something I really need to work on at all times because of my limitations. But I’m not sure that soul is something that can be taught or learnt. I used to have a Paterson, and since I was young I named all my animals after the greats, like Otis and Wilson (that one was a double up), my Paterson was called Franklin after the great lady herself.
James R Burns James R Burns Oops I meant Patterdale ☺️🤭🤓, I had a Patterdale Terrier. I was developing two rolls of film this morning using my Paterson kit, I’ll blame it on that and old age.
Great video James. I saw a couple of these on Instagram this morning. I really liked the horseshoe bend in the river. That one is a wall-hanger for sure. I have enjoyed the black and whites. Seems the weather there often presents you great opportunities for mood and atmosphere and black and white excels in those.
Thanks Philip, very pleased with the horseshoe. My favourite was the last shot if the Tarn. I’ll soon be opening up an option to purchase prints on my website so people will have chance to hang up on their walls. The conditions were spot on for mono and enjoying it. Hopefully we’ve seen the last of the hot, cloudless skies for a while. 👍👍😬
Adapt, create, deliver one of many emotions via a creative medium. Grisedale looks superb 4:52 👍 horseshoe and Grisedale tarn, you made it magical. You really captured the area, with every shot James. My two little uns decided they liked the half of the horseshoe, we had a debate on why and we didn’t agree, daddy likes the horseshoe more 😁👍 no one captures the lakes quite like you! All the effort shows and thank you for taking us on this journey.
Cheers Mali. I’m still in 2 minds about them 2. Half the horseshoe could do with a better sky and the whole horseshoe seems slightly unbalanced. I’m very critical though. Always room for improvement. My favourite is the tarn shot as it’s the simplest yet so atmospheric. Whatever emotion, as longs as it brings one. Thanks as always 👍👍😬
Loving your extended foray into moody mono images James, the image at 4.48 is another belter - you really are hitting the spot with these. Well done on getting out in this weather - I have almost given up getting out in any weather these days - but am still enjoying the images coming from yourself n others. Hope the injury wasn't too bad.regards Al
I’m definitely loving the mono moods myself Alan. The conditions worked just fine. I just had to dodge the rain but as they say, the bad weather often brings better images. The injury is temporary, hopefully. Cheers Al 👍👍😬
Hi James, fantastic video, one of your best i think. Really loved the production and some cracking images. Personal favourite was the horse shoe stream!👍👍
You make great use of the low lying mist in this video James. Really like the shots with the horseshoe and s-curve. Music choice captured the mood very well too. A bit of a unique vlog as I saw two things that I rarely see: 1. A fell walk where the telephoto never comes out, 2. A very knackered vlogger. It must have been some rain as that descent almost got the best of you! Thanks for another entertaining video James. Cheers, Jeff
Thanks Jeff. Yes it was a struggle at the end. To be honest I think I spent a lot of time trying find the first composition and dodging the rain. It was a long walk and I probably underestimated it. The first vlog for a long time with no telephoto. I won’t be making that mistake again 😬 The conditions made up my mind that this was going to be another BW moody episode. Thanks for watching Jeff 👍👍
Well done on getting out Jame's, on not the best of days but you definitely made the most of the conditions. After a fantastic summer, I whimped out of a walk today, due to a rain forecast, after having two different hike invites. Woke up to dull but dry weather and missed my chance, so good on you! Despite the conditions, you still captured some good shots, especially the first one, which I really enjoyed. Cheers Alan
Cheers Alan. The weather conditions wouldn’t have been that bad if the heavens hadn’t have opened from when I started descending Seat Sandal. I prefer overcast when there are lots of detailed clouds. The hot cloudless summer wasn’t my idea of fun. A great walk. Have you done it? I’m going to climb Dollywagon Pike from Thirlmere. 👍👍😬
Very good mate, some smashing images there, you're black and white stuff really is superb. Still can't really get my head around the concept of fine art. For me the moment I start thinking of my images as fine art is the moment I've started taking this all too seriously!
Cheers Christopher. The day I start to take things seriously is the day I give up. I am getting rather moody lately though. Fine art is just good photography (as featured in my latest blog) 😬😬👍
Absolutely stunning photos mate, one of my favorites so far, really nice video ☺️.. and hopefully you didn’t hurt yourself to badly on the way back down
Cheers Clifford. Good conditions for the shots I wanted, excluding the rain. I was definitely struggling with the foot when coming down. I may have overdone it after no hike for several weeks. Think it’s an age thing 👍👍😄
James R Burns well you got the best out of it for sure ☺️☺️ Haha yeah not doing it for a while can be the problem 😅 and age I guess but you seem pretty fit 👍🏻
Just re watching some of your videos James. I love this one as I'm just getting in to what I think is fine art black and white photography. I'm still not sure what "fine art" is, but my images look good to me.
Cheers Martin. As long as you’re happy with your images then job done. There are many definitions of fine art, one of which is photography that is not picture card ish. You can really experiment with BW. Have fun and enjoy👍
Isn't your mammut waterproof? :) Loved the image from seat sandals, the lake that is.. Lovely mate. Oh, ang huge congrats for reaching 1000 subs!! Rightly deserved, and here's to the next 1000!
Cheers Oddbjorn, finally got to their👍 The mammut is ok in light rain but doesn’t do well in heavier downpours. The Berhaus coat is losing its Gortex protection I believe. More money😐
Thanks Neil, a good discovery that horseshoe and hopefully will be returning. I enjoy the editing, especially when comes to life with the music selection. 👍👍😬
Asgard Studios Thank you, appreciate it. I have a good idea of what will work well in BW but I do use monochrome profile and live view now and then. I’d recommend to compose in BW when first starting out. Cheers 👍👍
I have a friend who works out of Paris as a documentary photographer but also does fine art photography, over there you have to conform to certain guidelines. you must print all work to the same size and no more than thirty produced, all must be numbered, printed on acid free archival paper, giclee process, all must be signed and carry a certificate of authenticity. Doesn't matter if it's a landscape, Portrait, Abstract, etc, b+w, or colour. I know Martin never prints more than 10 of a Photo, it keeps the prices higher. I hope you enjoyed your day out, not nice being soggy.
That sounds like a pretty well organised system and certainly eases the definition of fine art. My weather proofing has certainly improved since that day. Cheers Iain 👍
1st comment .. whooohooo Another quality episode James That s curve looks like a return spot and I love the explanations you gave throughout Bravo #notificationsquad
I think there is something missing from most of the youtube videos on landscape photography. Many of them are good at telling us how to compose a picture with leading lines and whatever. And they will produce a picture that is beautiful, but they never seek to tell us what that beauty is, what the picture evokes, what emotional response they think is produced by it, what meaning a landscape has. For example, for me a landscape of hills and heather and a babbling brook offers peace, in a setting that is ancient. It belittles our metropolitan concerns and reminds us that nature's most ordinary settings outlive us. It may even challenge us to consider whether our lives have meaning or we can give them meaning by drawing closer to nature. A picture of a grand mountain range may even have intimations of the transcendental. There are enough photographers out there telling us how to use a filter . What we don't have a lot of is interpreters of the meaning of a picture.
A very interesting comment and thanks for your time you have obviously spent. Very points and often it is the easier option for vloggers to speak of compositional choices and the tools needed. It’s hard to talk of emotional responses in terms of words used. We’ve all heard stunning, awesome, fantastic etc etc but does it really share the vloggers experience? A feeling is personal to that vlogger/photographer and can only be truly experienced if there at that moment in time. I’d like to share what I look for and use to have the chance for another photographer to relive that moment, albeit this is also dependent on the conditions. It’s a hard one but a great point and I will definitely attempt it. Thank you very much. 👍👍😄
I know. Thinking about it myself, I realise that you could just as quickly run out of words. Still, this is close to the point that your other comments on Fine Art made, that is is not about representing the landscape but about using it as the material through which you convey feeling. What then is that feeling? I love Thomas Heaton's stuff and he does get slagged off for saying a view is 'absolutely stunning' and part of what I'm looking for is a photographer who can go deeper. James Popsys makes a great point that a good photograph is not 'of something' but 'about something'. Anyway, all the best. I've subscribed and will follow with interest.
I love black and white personally. Great video.
Thanks Tim, you’re not on your own. Mono is so rewarding. Appreciate your comment 👍👍

Thanks Darren, it’s been a while.... 3 weeks! Yikes! Serious withdrawal symptoms. Yes, definitely a sunrise revisit for that horseshoe location 👍👍😬
I am scared your camera will fall :(
Don’t be! It didn’t, everything was fine 👍👍
