I have respect for a slum life and the humanity and greatness that rises out of it. But that is not what India in its entirety is. Our experiences are very diverse. Ghat is a hindi word. It means range of mountains.
These destinations were not that popular among the westerners simply because the Hospitality industry was not that advanced in India compare to the western destinations you mentioned. Primarily because India was a poor nation after independence. The local citizens couldn't afford expensive facilities and hence businesses never cared.
Now that some wealth has grown...in the past 10+ years the hospitality has improved. Better hotels, restaurants and other commute facilities. Locals are also looking for better places to stay and more business are investing for better facilities.
Next react on Sikkim and Northeast India......those places are raw and beautiful. Even many Indians haven't visited there.

Yes, Rick - it is quite intentional. And it's okay. Anyway. I live in Bangalore (South India) and most of these places are quite near from here, particularly Ooty, Coonoor, Chikmagalur, Kodai, Munnar.. even Goa. And since I work with tea, I pay frequent visits to the tea estates of Coonoor and Munnar. One specialty of the tea estates in India is that they have fantastic Tea Bungalows - which are at least a hundred years old - where you can stay; and these are situated amidst lush tea gardens. So, when you are planning your South Indian trip (whenever that is), I shall be happy to show you around, and if interested take you to one of the tea estates where you can stay in a Tea Bungalow and sip some gourmet / artisanal teas as well. :)

I have moved to mahableshwar 3 years ago for my medical study and trust me it is so so so beautiful that it would be a shame to put it in words. The camera doesn't capture the beauty like your own eyes do. I visited ooty once and I was mesmerized by the forests and wildlife there too. Also when you travel through the ghats during autumn its the most beautiful picture. Whenever travelling, the small streams which fall throughout your journey and the foggy weather is really beautiful. When you travel through mahableshwar ghats during rainy or winter season you will have to put on your headlights of your car continuously throughout your journey. Its so foggy that you can't see anything infront of you. As much beautiful it is, its dangerous too. But you know what, its worth it. Should definitely give it a try.❤️❤️

Unless u make movies like Peter Jackson, I guess there r lesser opportunities of land depictions & it's beauty.

Yeah, 'Ghats' means hill-slopes. Just add 'Amboli' in Maharashtra to make it 10. There are two such major ranges in the southern part of India: The Western Ghats ranging from Northern Maharashtra to the meeting point of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, covering Karnataka and Goa on the way (Sahyadri range); with a 'gap' leading to 'Annamalai' range in Kerala that is home to some stunning and unique sites. The other - the Eastern Ghats - which are not as continuous as the former, run from Odisha down to Tamil Nadu covering Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (both sharing Hyderabad, for reference). Both the ranges are much older geologically than the Himalayas in the North (but not even its one-third in height). Highest peak in Sahyadri range is at 5400 ft (1646 m); while the tallest peak in all southern hills of India is 'Anamudi' in Kerala at 8842 ft (2695 m). Himalaya reaches as high as 29,029 ft ( 8,848 m)!
