From a veteran star wars fan and a person who obsesses about star wars probably way too much, you can watch the original trilogy and understand what's going on by simply watching the films, but if you want to fully understand the prequels you have to dig a bit deeper. Try watching star wars the clone wars (it's between aotc and rots), that's the easiest and quickest way to understand everything a bit more. I know at this point you know the OT crew, luke, han, leia ect. is the best thing ever, but once you finish clone wars you will understand what i'm trying to say here. It will also make you cry a lot once you hit the end of S5 and S7 😭😭😭
As a child I was lucky enough to meet Kenny Baker, the actor who operated/performed as R2-D2 in the first 6 films, on location in England during the filming of the movie "Time Bandits" in 1980. I was 6 years old at the time. During a break in filming, he spied me from afar (being the only kid on the set that day) and came over to introduce himself. "Do you know who I am?" he asked. "I was R2-D2 in Star Wars!" To which I replied, "Don't be silly, everybody knows R2-D2 is a robot!" 😁
To explain one of your questions, the good guy's force religion are the "Jedi" as you know, whereas the bad guys' force religion are the "Sith", to put it simply, though the lore is far more complex and varied.
@@jenmurrayxo They're, the Sith, sorta like Dark Jedi, but not. It's complicated. Even as a kid in the 1970s and 80s - Vader was called Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith...
@@jenmurrayxo There was a scene from "A New Hope" where Darth Vader is referred to as a Sith Lord. For some reason it was cut from the film. So, the term "Sith" was nothing brand new for the movies.
@@markjuarez1791 Indeed. The term Sith was known already in 1977. Back then as I went to see Star Wars for the first time they were handing audience little pamphlets explaining some of the names and terms in the movie such as 'hyperspace', 'droid', 'force' etc. And in that pamphlet Darth Vader was introduced with the title the Dark Lord of Sith. This was also his title in the Star Wars comic book at the time, and in the two books published shortly after. So even as no one called Darth Vader the Dark Lord of Sith in the movie itself - as that scene got cut - the audiences did learn his title from other media of the time.
Quick Character Breakdown: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor, you eventually figured out who this was) Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson, Obi-Wan's master) Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman, Queen of Naboo who posed as a handmaiden numerous times during the movie) Sabé (Keira Knightly, one of Queen Amidala's handmaidens and the one who disguises herself as the queen for her protection) Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson (AKA Nick Fury) Jedi Master on the council) Senator Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid, Senator from Naboo that councils Queen Amidala and eventually gets elected Supreme Chancellor) Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best) Shmi Skywalker (Pernilla August, Anakin's mother) Supreme Chancellor Valorum (Terence Stamp, Supreme Chancellor until Queen Amidala raises a vote of no confidence in him in which he was then voted out and succeeded by Senator Palpatine) I think those are the main ones that confuse people and/or may need to know in the future. I did leave a few out that had sizable parts in the movie but I just deemed not as important
A clue in this movie: Ian McDermid plays the same character in both the prequels & the original trilogy; iow, the character that he plays in this trilogy BECOMES the Emperor in the original.
Part of the reason Lucas waited so long until he made this new trilogy was a) he was emotionally drained following a divorce and b) was creatively drained as he felt the current technology wouldn't allow him to tell the story he wanted. Apparently, it was when he was watching a test screening of Jurassic Park with Steven Spielberg that he realised that the CG tech had now come far enough to tell the prequel story. Say what you want about him, but Jar Jar was actually one of the first digital characters in a live action movie and the next film (attack of the clones) pioneered the use of digital cameras. Whereas the originals revolutionised practical effects, the prequels revolutionised digital effects. There were still tons of practical effects used though depending on the appropriate circumstances. For example, Palpatines office ( which you'll see more of in the next two films) was a practical set built with a digital view out of the window. Many of the ships flying outside the window were a mixture of practical models and digital effects :)
@@5peciesunkn0wn Aye, they did. They could also use digital tech to do things that couldn't be done in the OT. As much as people whine about the 'overuse' of digital effects, the truth is that a healthy combination of practical and digital was used depending upon the situation.
@@onemoreminute0543 It's true. I do think some scenes were oversaturated with CGI. That being said. So much of everything they did looked sooo good. I think where they messed up was making too many of the aliens with CGI...
It should be mentioned, that Midi-chlorians only connect you to the force (many older fans mistake them as being the force) and the Midi-chlorian count is not an indicator of skill but only potential. Anakin has alot of raw potential due to his high M-count and thus has an easier time aquiring skill with the force but someone like Obi-Wan with a relatively low M-count can still become a proficient Jedi with enough training.
@@jenmurrayxo I treat Midichlorians as the "phrenology" of the Star Wars universe....a discredited older theory they now know is b.s.....that's my head canon anyway.
About the lightsabre battles being better in this one- The lightsabre duels in the original trilogy were in essence between a Jedi long past his prime, a "machine man" and a young Jedi trainee. George Lucas wanted us to see what the Jedi were like in their prime which is why we got this lightsabre duel on steroids! Ray Park who played Darth Maul has been studying Martial Arts since he was 7 years old. And how about that soundtrack! "Duel of the Fates" is one of the best tracks to come out of the entire saga! Glad you enjoyed it! Loved the reaction!
Episode One holds a special place in my heart. When I first saw it. It blew my mind. So I'm really glad you liked it. I also am a fan of Qui-Gon Jinn and the lightsaber battles. Jedi Knights are trained from a very young age and explains why they are much better swordsman than Luke who maybe only had a year of training by the end of Return of the Jedi. Sith Lords like Darth Maul and Darth Sidious are extremely powerful and skilled as well. Can't wait for you to watch the rest of the Skywalker Saga.
@@docsavage8640 That's only if you didn't notice Luke leaping inhuman heights and Vader killing people from far away or the Emperor shooting lightning, never mind other abilities displayed. There weren't as many examples in the OT, but that's the point. The prequels have an abundance of jedi - and they're doing jedi things - which even better illustrates the dark times that the OT takes place within.
there was a race that was like that for a while, a race in Italy on twisting mountain roads called the Targa Florio, during the race local bandits would come out onto the hills and take potshots at the drivers as they went by, after several drivers got shot, wounded and even killed the race organisers found a very unorthodox solution to the problem, they employed the bandits as race Marshals.
I love to see you watch Jar Jar Binks and knot notice he is...the Phantom Menance...but watch the end closely when Mace asks who was destroyed...the master...or the apprentice? And yes, Samuel L Jackson is in e’er thing...lol...he hold the Guinness Book of World Records for the most revenue created from any one actor in his roles! His movies always ROCK!
Hey Jen! Enjoyed your react. I really like the prequels myself. I like their expansivness. And unlike the newest ones, at least these were George's vision. They were tied together and followed a cohesive arc. George should have made the final three, in my humble opinion. Anyway, great job!!! Hello Boston!! 🐶🐶🐶🤘😎🤘
@@docsavage8640 George planned to make the sequels but sadly that never happened.... it's even sadder that Disney took George's plans and threw em aside for their own.
Another great reaction. The death of Qui-gon is the key to this movie during the lightsaber battle that is known as THE DUEL OF THE FATES, as this influences the fate of ANAKIN SKYWALKER. Had Qui-gon lived, he would have shown the maturity and patience to train Anakin properly, but because he dies, that responsibility transfers to OBI-Wan, who has just barely become a jedi knight himself and doesn't train Anakin as well as Qui-gon would have, according to Dave Filioni, who currently works on Star Wars for Disney. This duel of the fates changes the fate of Anakin Skywalker and leads to, of course, the rise of Darth Vader and the Emperor ruling the galaxy and everything you see in episodes #4-6. Hope you enjoy watching episodes #2 and 3. Epsiode#3 is a really amazing movie and hopefully will answer a lot of your questions. Keep smiling 🤘 🙂
The shields stop high speed projectiles and energy weapons so you can walk through as long as you move slowly while penetrating them - same idea as in Dune. Not only is that a helpful plot device but it also makes more sense in terms of physics ... I believe for the early movies they didn't have an actual sword expert to choreograph the fights but in the later movies they had a martial arts weapon expert to work with them.
Bob Anderson was an Olympic fencer and world renowned swordsman, and he was the fight choreographer on both Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. George is on record saying that the OT movies the fights were supposed to be between students and old men where as with these movies is was very important to portray the fighting style of Jedi at the peak of their power and in their prime!!
Episode 1 was my first Star Wars movie theatre experience. So this movie has a very special place in my heart. Duel of the Fates (the song playing during the lightsabre fight between Qui-gon, Obi Wan and Darth Maul) is so iconic and in my top 3 of Star Wars music. Both, Jar-Jar and Anakin worked as good characters for me. I don’t share the hate some purists put on those two characters. Anakin was adorable.
I've been thinking that Anakin, as talented he was, didn't build C-3PO from scratch but rather from a kit or using a blueprint or so. There are after all several other protocol droids of the same type around. Good job still for a kid, especially compared to MY model kit building at the same age! XD Glad to see you enjoyed it and felt the same it can't quite match the old ones in characters and plot - the battle choreography was obviously more elaborate by this time, I think it may be due the influence of martial arts films having gotten so popular in the West in the 90's. Oh, personally I enjoy Palpatine and his slitheriness so much! :D
Several years ago, George Lucas spoke about the differences between the lightsaber battles in the original trilogy and the ones in the prequels. He said something like, "In the originals, there was an old man, a guy who was half man/half machine and a relatively inexperienced apprentice doing the fighting. In Episodes I, II and III, we have fully trained Jedi in their prime fighting." It totally makes sense why there's such a big difference in style and intensity. And I absolutely LOVE Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine! He's so good as that character. You're **really** not going to like him after you see Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Nothing better than a really good baddie. 😁
My parents took me to the theater when they re-released 4, 5 & 6 in theaters so I already knew and loved Star Wars. However in 1999 when I was 9 years old and I saw this along with 2 & 3 I was so excited because it was MY Star Wars
Great reaction to this film! 😀 You may hate Palpatine, but a key to a great story is a great Villain. Follow Palpatine's story too. He is surprisingly powerful and cunning.
Artoo is the MVP of the whole saga lol. I think I fall into a weird bubble which may be more of a minority - this movie came out when I was almost 8, so I did grow up with the prequels and didn't hate them like a lot of older fans did, because they (this one especially) were written more for kids. However, even before then, I had watched the original trilogy so many times on VHS and even remember seeing the Empire Strikes Back special edition release in the theater when I was 6(?). So I was super excited when this came out, but unlike probably most 7 or 8 year olds I already knew way too much about Star Wars and am an OT fan above all else. I think George had written himself into a little bit of a narrative corner telling the story this way, because the prequels had to tell Vader's backstory which meant certain things were pretermined by lines in the OT. However, I still think they are pretty well done overall, especially Ep. III. I'm glad to hear you say you don't care if people say they hate them, and really hope you'll keep that attitude and watch the sequels as well (I still love them and I think many fans do, but the more vocal ones are the haters you see all the time). Whether you do or don't like them, at least you can have your own opinion.
I agree, the Saber battles are more epic in the prequels. Just wait ;) Most people really dislike Attack of the Clones, but I think it's way better than Episode 1 so I'm looking forward to that reaction!
I just love when Obi-Wan kicks it into gear, when it's his turn against Maul. It's truly incredible that all of the saber fights were done by the actors, and it wasn't sped up.
I thought the lightsaber duel was pretty epic, until I saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. There’s no comparison. It was faster and flawless. Lucas should have hired Woo Ping Yuen for the fight sequences in the prequels.
@@jenmurrayxo Many of the fictional weapons are less practical than their looks: Darth Maul's double-ended light sabre is one of them. Being almost twice as long as a regular one, it is effectively a long staff, and yet without the advantage offered by one, as the hands are stuck in its middle section rather than free to hold it along its entire length. So you end up not being able to utilize the extended reach offered by a staff, and having an extra blade that has a good chance causing damage to yourself.
The last piece of music with the parade is the Emperor's theme from Return of the Jedi but played in a major key with additions. A wonderful little musical nod, just like some of the music during Anakin's space battle is a major version of the notes from Vader's theme!
People hate on this one but I love the call backs to the beginning of the originals, while making a sensible storyline, like the loss of a mentor, ending with a big celebration. And as to the lack of practical effects at times, you can’t always have the good without the bad. It had great scenes like the underwater journey, and it’s important to realize this wasn’t a time when we were still early in the visual effects game. ✌️
I can sum up my feeling on the prequels in one word: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Natalie Portman played the queen, her handmaiden was played by none other than Keira Knightley. At the time it was VERY difficult to tell them apart, even in real life.
Hey Jen!! I am a huge Star Wars fan, and I can say I actually did like this movie. It's pretty awesome seeing the Jedi in their prime. I loved the lightsaber battles, although I could have done without JarJars high jinks LOL. Qui-Gon and Maul were really cool characters, too bad they died so soon. The next movie is my 2nd least favorite out of them all. 😬Anyways, keep up the great work, really love your reactions! Cya! 💖
Nice Jen. Ah how I hope you'll like this. I think you will. Lots of people were harsh to this one when it came out, including me but, I've come to appreciate it over time. I think us old people's expectations were tainted by our adoration for the earlier films. And the three in this new trilogy just get better.
I know this is 2+ years old. I read through the comments and hadn't seen any anything that mentions this. The Rodian that was dancing when Anakin win the Podrace, is Greedo. When the door opened in the Hanger and Darth Maul was standing there. The Cast hadn't seen him yet and wasn't expecting anybody to be there. So the look on their face was genuine. The Blanket Yoda covered up with I Return, was Qui Gon's Robe. The saber fights have an awesome explanation from George Lucas. In the OT he said we have an inexperienced Young Boy and a mostly mechanical Sith. He said to the cast that they are heavy and hard to swing around. This is in the heyday of the Jedi Order. One thing that doesn't make since, after Qui Gon's Funeral, Anakin got his Padawan Lerner haircut + Braid; how did he get the Braid when his hair wasn't long enough.
Boss Nass was voiced by Brian Blessed! On another note, the version of the film shown here incorporates deleted scenes, including some of the podrace footage. The extended podrace footage (Lap 2) is inconsistent with the geography of the podrace track, whereas the original theatrical version of the podrace makes perfect sense. Btw, the reason why Sebulba sabotaged Mars Guo (around @15:15) during the race was bcos Guo was flirting with one of his Twi'lek girlfriends XD
According to a series of books centered around Jinn and Kenobi, Quigon Jinn had another apprentice who turned to the dark side as a dark jedi. I don't think he had any affiliation with Sideous.
Hey Jen, okay, so I'm a Star wars original I saw Star wars / a New Hope when I was 10. Where did three years for empire waited three years for Jedi. Then waited a lifetime for the prequels. I knew what I was getting into was a character development pre-story to Star wars. I enjoyed them one was okay two was good three is great. The people that hate the prequels p don't understand a story. A lot of them were what we call second generation Star wars fans who watched them in the '80s and didn't grow up with them. So they expected so much more. The phenomenon of the original Three cannot be duplicated and I think after waiting so long we're looking for that nostalgic satisfaction. And they didn't get it. If you're a true Star wars fan you enjoy all the movies for what they are and you understand the story cuz it's a huge universe not just a nine movie series. Speak English 8 9 and 10 people hated but if you watch them for what they are and you understand the Star wars universe they're not horrible they're actually good. So don't listen to comments watch everything I enjoy it for what it is it's an epic story of good versus evil. Anyway that was a long ramble. I'm so glad you're enjoying them you're awesome ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦
I think of Midi-chlorians as Force power potential. Someone with a higher count can become very strong with the Force, but they still have to train to reach that potential. Where someone with a lower count can reach a high level as well, but has to train harder to reach the power level. Sort of someone with a higher athletic potential will do better in sports naturally, but they can be beat by someone who isn't as naturally gifted who works harder.
Movie and music are forms of art and art is very subjected to one’s individual taste .... I might like a movie and others not so much and that’s ok ... but don’t ever feel weird about liking a movie because others don’t like it... we are all of us the lead character in our own personal saga and connect to different things in different ways 🙏❤️🙏
I've found enjoyment in every Star Wars movie I've watched. I just have fun with them and don't go in with particular expectations. Looking forward to your next outfit Jen. 👍

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I had to wait 16 years between Return of the Jedi and this one! The lightsaber fights are better because you’re seeing fully trained Jedi Knights. Luke got a late start and had lots of self doubt to overcome. The Sith are the natural enemies of the Jedi. They use the force for power and control. There used to be armies of Jedi and Sith until the latter were defeated. Then a Sith Lord learned from that defeat that to be more effective there can only be 2. It took them 1000 years but well, you’ll see.
Luke's doubts don't really account for the differences. For one thing, Obi-Wan and Darth Vader are extremely experienced with lightsabers, two of the best of their time. A lot of the original trilogy was influenced by Kurosawa movies, from cinematography to themes, and this includes the lightsaber battles. They are much more in line with the portrayal of rigid form duels between samurai in those movies while in the prequels they use movement more reminiscent of the Kung Fu from Hong Kong action movies.
Nice to see a balanced and unbiased take on this movie. Some love the prequels completely, some hate them entirely, but the truth is there is some good and some bad. OT still the best, though!
"With Palpatine, we all know what happens with him in the future." Confession: it took me a long time to realize Senator/Chancellor Palpatine here was the same hooded figure in the holograms and later the Emperor.
11:48 should be more like the incarnation. The Immaculate Conception involves the conception of Mary, who had two biological human parents. It's an easy mistake because so much of popular culture conflates the two.
Yoda was a practical effect puppet in the original release but was later changed to the digital version to be more consistent with the other prequels. It seems like whichever trilogy your grow up with tends to be the one you think is the best, hence all the polarized opinions. Glad you're exploring this universe more!
@@gawainethefirstar Jar is a precious cinnamon roll who needs to be protected at all costs. Phantom is not just my favorite SW film, but my favorite film period. Good reaction. Never appologise if you enjoyed something that others dont. I think these movies are very good. Sure there are some really odd, bad, bits, but overall it was great. They just way over used the CGi that was the main issue I think. When you watch 7-9 just enjoy it and dont let others sway your viewing! ;) x
Bit late to the discussion, but to answer your question as to what the Sith are: Some 20,000 years before the movies, there was a schism in the Jedi Order and a massive group of Dark Jedi rebels were eventually defeated by the rest of the order after a prolonged war. Rather than execute the survivors, the Jedi Council instead had them launched into an unexplored region of the galaxy. By shear bad luck (or perhaps not, given the exiles’ strength in the Dark Side of the Force), they landed on the homeworld of the Sith species, which were a race naturally strong in the Dark Side themselves. After being conquered by the exiled Jedi and having their cultures blended, the Sith then spent thousands of years in isolation preparing for a conflict with the Republic which would eventually happen. After multiple wars with the Republic (most of them instigated by fallen Jedi who took control of the Sith), the Sith species was driven into extinction and instead became a force using ideology; one that focused on the strong ruling over the weak and the idea of “might makes right” taken to its most extreme. The Sith Order has been destroyed several times in the past, only to be revived again and again by Dark Jedi who who discovered hidden caches of information left by the ancient Sith and used it in the pursuit of greater power. So, they aren’t simply reverse Jedi, but a distinct (albeit heavily Jedi influenced) order of Force users whose goals are to become strong by conquest.
Jedi in their prime at the height of their abilities so the light saber battles are taken up a notch in this time. NGL I love the aesthetic of the Prequel era and of course the music is top notch.
This one was my favorite lightsaber battle of the whole franchise. Darth Maul just has unmatched style, and was such a great cinematic intro to the classic Sith warrior concept. I was also disappointed in Qui-Gonn's death and also sensed it early on in that duel, but I was equally disappointed in Darth Maul's death, he was just too impressive to be thrown away like that...
The lightsaber battles are better, and they get even better as the prequels go on. Just wait for Episode III! Just discovered your videos, and can't wait for you to keep going. Love the reactions!
- Protocol droids are common in the Star Wars universe, TC-14 is the silver one in the trade ship - Jar Jar is the worst and George Lucas added him for his kids, they kinda write him off in the later episodes - Kiera Knightly plays Sabe, Padme’s decoy - R2-D2 is an astromech droid and like the protocol droids they are very common in the Star Wars universe, they are used for ship repairs and navigation. - It was revealed in the comics recently that Anakin was birthed by the force because Palpatine (Darth Sidious) manipulated the force to essentially create him - Midichlorians are never mentioned again after this movie and is speculated Quigon had a theory about them but that they are actually meaningless - You missed the greatest quote in all of Star Wars - "The ability to speak does not make you intelligent" which I have adopted as my mantra - Anakin is 100% the chosen one, do not let anyone tell you otherwise - This is not the end of Darth Maul even though you see him get sliced in 2 pieces, he has a major role in the Clone Wars, Solo and basically leading up to the entire Mandalorian story line. - Quigon skirts the rules of the Jedi and is why he is not on the council. He is basically Anakin’s father figure, Obiwan takes Anakin on as an apprentice because Quigon requested it, he is more of a brother to Anakin than a father. - Sith is the order opposite of Jedi, they are everything the Jedi are not. Once in the thousands like the Jedi, they had a civil war and under the leadership of Darth Bane declared the rule of 2, a master and an apprentice, no more, no less. Darth is the title they all have. By having a rule of 2, there is always the presence of betrayal as the apprentice cannot become the master without destroying the master. Their lightsabers are ALWAYS red because to become a full-fledged Sith lord you must kill a Jedi and acquire their kyber crystal (what makes the light of the lightsaber) and through their hatred they corrupt that crystal and make it “bleed” becoming red. I am like 95% sure you won’t read this, but there it is, your crash course in things you probably don’t care about 😁

The light saber battles ARE far improved over the original trilogy. In fact, I would go so far as to say that there is a light saber battle in Episode 3 may well be the greatest sword battle of any kind ever put to film.
It could’ve been better, too many closeups and it was much too short. Phantom menace was better, but foreign martial arts films have superior fight choreography. Crouching Tiger hidden dragon comes to mind, for one.

The lightsaber fights are definitely better. But from an in-universe point of view, you're also seeing Jedi and Sith at the height of their power. In the original movies, Obi-Wan was an old man, Vader was in a life support suit, and Luke was still a student until the end of Return of the Jedi. And I absolutely love that they had Ian McDiarmid play Senator Palpatine.
Part of the reasons for the lightsaber duels being more impressive than in the original trilogy is that David Prowse, who played Darth Vader could barely when in costume. Also, Interestingly enough, this is not the last we see of Darth Maul, if you include things other than the three main trilogys that is.

Thanks!! I hope to learn more of the lore as I see more 👍👍
@@jenmurrayxo They're, the Sith, sorta like Dark Jedi, but not. It's complicated. Even as a kid in the 1970s and 80s - Vader was called Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith...
"Good" is a point of view..........
Quick Character Breakdown:
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor, you eventually figured out who this was)
Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson, Obi-Wan's master)
Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd)
Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman, Queen of Naboo who posed as a handmaiden numerous times during the movie)
Sabé (Keira Knightly, one of Queen Amidala's handmaidens and the one who disguises herself as the queen for her protection)
Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson (AKA Nick Fury) Jedi Master on the council)
Senator Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid, Senator from Naboo that councils Queen Amidala and eventually gets elected Supreme Chancellor)
Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best)
Shmi Skywalker (Pernilla August, Anakin's mother)
Supreme Chancellor Valorum (Terence Stamp, Supreme Chancellor until Queen Amidala raises a vote of no confidence in him in which he was then voted out and succeeded by Senator Palpatine)
I think those are the main ones that confuse people and/or may need to know in the future.
Many of the ships flying outside the window were a mixture of practical models and digital effects
:)
The prequels actually had *more* practical sets and such than the Original Trilogy lol. Big budgets definitely helped out.
Interesting 👍
@@jenmurrayxo I treat Midichlorians as the "phrenology" of the Star Wars universe....a discredited older theory they now know is b.s.....that's my head canon anyway.
About the lightsabre battles being better in this one-
The lightsabre duels in the original trilogy were in essence between a Jedi long past his prime, a "machine man" and a young Jedi trainee.
Thanks Kevin! Ya that makes total sense why the lightsabering was so much better 👍
immaculate conception, they never spilt a drop
Episode One holds a special place in my heart. When I first saw it. It blew my mind. So I'm really glad you liked it. I also am a fan of Qui-Gon Jinn and the lightsaber battles. Jedi Knights are trained from a very young age and explains why they are much better swordsman than Luke who maybe only had a year of training by the end of Return of the Jedi. Sith Lords like Darth Maul and Darth Sidious are extremely powerful and skilled as well. Can't wait for you to watch the rest of the Skywalker Saga.
Really excited to keep exploring the Star Wars Universe! Starting The Mandalorian on my Patreon this week! 😆
@@jenmurrayxo Niiiiice! You'll love the Mandalorian!
Imagine a race where people are shooting at you and the drivers sabotage each other...
You mean the early days of NASCAR? 🤣
there was a race that was like that for a while, a race in Italy on twisting mountain roads called the Targa Florio, during the race local bandits would come out onto the hills and take potshots at the drivers as they went by, after several drivers got shot, wounded and even killed the race organisers found a very unorthodox solution to the problem, they employed the bandits as race Marshals.
Darth Maul is played by Ray Park, and he's indeed a mighty impressive martial artist.
For sure! 👍

Amanda Seyfried: Who's that?

Loved, loved, loved..."uuuuuuuh, kinda miss practical effects." Coming from a first time viewer, this was the best line ever.

Thanks Neal! Boston says hi 🦁💙
@@docsavage8640 George planned to make the sequels but sadly that never happened.... it's even sadder that Disney took George's plans and threw em aside for their own.
the saber fights in this are BRILLIANT
Agreed 👍
Thanks Kevin!! I enjoyed these! Ep 2 will be up Fri 11th 👍👍
I've just given this a rewatch for you, Jen, I'll try to rewatch all the prequels before I go to bed tonight. 🙂
I saw This with my dad and I was blown away by how fun this movie is!
That must have been awesome to see this in theaters! Ya I had fun with this movie & definitely think it's worth giving the prequels a chance! 👍
I love your reactions. You're so chill and laid-back. Don't change. 😊
Thanks Derek, glad you enjoy hanging out with me ☺️👍
I've been thinking that Anakin, as talented he was, didn't build C-3PO from scratch but rather from a kit or using a blueprint or so.
Ohhh Palpatine is a slimy villain indeed! 😆

The Podrace scene and the Lightsaber Battle are the best part of the movie!
Oh yes he's a great villain!! True true the lightsabering being so much better makes total sense 👍👍
@@jenmurrayxo Lightsabering! 😂 That's great! I'm gonna start using that.
My parents took me to the theater when they re-released 4, 5 & 6 in theaters so I already knew and loved Star Wars. However in 1999 when I was 9 years old and I saw this along with 2 & 3 I was so excited because it was MY Star Wars
The "immaculate conception" is alluded to and explained in episode III.

Great reaction to this film! 😀 You may hate Palpatine, but a key to a great story is a great Villain. Follow Palpatine's story too. He is surprisingly powerful and cunning.
Oh I always love a great villain 👍
Yes exactly! I'm having fun watching these ☺👍
Fear is the path to the Dark Side fear leads to anger anger leads to hate hate leads to suffering lol 😊

I agree, the Saber battles are more epic in the prequels. Just wait ;) Most people really dislike Attack of the Clones, but I think it's way better than Episode 1 so I'm looking forward to that reaction!
Can't wait to see more lightsabering 👍👍 Ep 2 will be up Fri 11th & is on Patreon now!
I just love when Obi-Wan kicks it into gear, when it's his turn against Maul.
It's truly incredible that all of the saber fights were done by the actors, and it wasn't sped up.
@@jenmurrayxo Just wait until Episode 3 🙂
Luke being a good pilot is such a parallel to Ani. Anakin is my favourite person in the whole of star wars
True, I had fun watching this one 👍

Thank you for having a genuine reaction and not talking too long in length or stopping to speak every 10 seconds like other reactors.

On another note, the version of the film shown here incorporates deleted scenes, including some of the podrace footage. The extended podrace footage (Lap 2) is inconsistent with the geography of the podrace track, whereas the original theatrical version of the podrace makes perfect sense.

Thanks Tad! Ya I am enjoying them & I think some will appeal to me more than others but overall a great story & a fun ride ☺👍
You know you're in trouble when the words "Jar Jar Binks, I need your help." come out of your mouth.
Interesting! Makes sense why the lightsabering is so much better 👍
Thanks I had fun watching this! 👍
"With Palpatine, we all know what happens with him in the future."
Confession: it took me a long time to realize Senator/Chancellor Palpatine here was the same hooded figure in the holograms and later the Emperor.
Bit late to the discussion, but to answer your question as to what the Sith are:
Some 20,000 years before the movies, there was a schism in the Jedi Order and a massive group of Dark Jedi rebels were eventually defeated by the rest of the order after a prolonged war.
Hey Jenny Penny, this was fun, I haven't seen the rest of the movies so can't wait to watch them with you 🥰
Jedi in their prime at the height of their abilities so the light saber battles are taken up a notch in this time. NGL I love the aesthetic of the Prequel era and of course the music is top notch.
Ya I agree!!
Yes I was expecting Maul's death to be a little more epic 🤷♀️
Right... death

The Gungan King is played by Brian Blessed. He was the King in Blackadder season one.
- Protocol droids are common in the Star Wars universe, TC-14 is the silver one in the trade ship
- Jar Jar is the worst and George Lucas added him for his kids, they kinda write him off in the later episodes
- Kiera Knightly plays Sabe, Padme’s decoy
- R2-D2 is an astromech droid and like the protocol droids they are very common in the Star Wars universe, they are used for ship repairs and navigation.
- It was revealed in the comics recently that Anakin was birthed by the force because Palpatine (Darth Sidious) manipulated the force to essentially create him
- Midichlorians are never mentioned again after this movie and is speculated Quigon had a theory about them but that they are actually meaningless
- You missed the greatest quote in all of Star Wars - "The ability to speak does not make you intelligent" which I have adopted as my mantra
- Anakin is 100% the chosen one, do not let anyone tell you otherwise
- This is not the end of Darth Maul even though you see him get sliced in 2 pieces, he has a major role in the Clone Wars, Solo and basically leading up to the entire Mandalorian story line.

@@oneironaut420 oops, I get carried away lol. That's good about Anakin, honestly Disney era Star Wars has been disappointing other than the Mandalorian
@@minnesotajones261 i know their mothers had a hard time telling them apart when they were in costume on set
I saw a picture of a Mongolian Queen once. It looked exactly like the Queen in Star Wars episode 1, even the makeup.
Jen if you liked the light saber battles in this one, you better hold on to your seat going forward! You will not be disappointed!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS! Star Wars reaction from Jen to end the day, hot pot of herbal tea and some Millano's inbound.
Sounds great! ☺️👍
When I saw this in the theatres, there were two times where the applause was phenomenal... when the beginning scroll started, with the iconic music-- and when Panaka said: "R2-D2." I swear, the roof lifted for a second on that theatre. :)
GREAT reaction!!! This movie definitely has its imperfections, but I LOVE IT. I was 15 when this came out, I have way too many awesome memories associated with it. Plus, it’s where I literally discovered the beauty that is NATALIE PORTMAN. I left Sandra Bullock for her 😂 I think you’re gonna love the next chapters, but if I were you I would definitely avoid the Disney sequel trilogy 😉
Thanks! Natalie Portman is lovely! 🥰
Not a spoiler, but a timeline...
Ep I - 32 years before Ep IV - Anakin is 9 - Padme is 14
Ep II - 22 years before Ep IV
Ep III - 19 years before Ep IV
Ep IV - Star Wars
Ep V - 3 years after Ep IV
Ep VI - 1 year after Ep V or 4 years after Ep IV
Ohhh interesting thanks 👍
@@jenmurrayxo No prob. I may be wrong, Padme may be 14 in Ep I - can't recall without looking it up - I'm now 99% sure she's 14, not 15... (LOOKED IT UP - SHE'S 14). :o)
@@minnesotajones261 that's why I keep recommending "The Saga Begins"... you'd never make that mistake if the song was in your head...;)
she was 14
@@tommytommy7535 Yeah, I figured that out myself afterwards so I've fixed the original post. :o)
The light saber battles ARE far improved over the original trilogy. In fact, I would go so far as to say that there is a light saber battle in Episode 3 may well be the greatest sword battle of any kind ever put to film.
Amazing!!!
It could’ve been better, too many closeups and it was much too short. Phantom menace was better, but foreign martial arts films have superior fight choreography. Crouching Tiger hidden dragon comes to mind, for one.
@@beatmet2355 Much too short? The duel's like 8 minutes long - longer than most 1v1s in saga.
@@Unknown-hb3id eight minutes? Didn’t seem like it, it wasn’t all that exciting. Duel of the Fates was much better
@@beatmet2355 That's a subjective criticism that very few would agree with anyways.
welcome to the prequesls. yes, the saber battles are amainzg. by the way, something of note. when i went to see this in 1999, my dad went with me. he told me (and i checked the scenes online) that the pod race was heavily influcenced by the charriot race in 1959s ben hurr.
can't wait to see your next 2 videos
Ohhh interesting! I need to see Ben Hur! Ep 2 next Fri & Ep 3 Friday after that! ☺👍
@@jenmurrayxo make sure to see the original version though. charleton heston, who was literally like in pretty much every epic movie of the 50s-60s so it seems lol.
oh and btw. if you tkae that celebration song at the end of the movie, slow it down a bit, playt it in its minor equivelnt key and about 2 octaves lower. it sounds remarkably like something you heard in return of the jedi that is a lot less happy.
Duel of the Fates is the music in the fight with Darth Maul. The lyrics are actually in Sanskrit.
Oh interesting! 👍
@@jenmurrayxo it's a pretty amazing composition th-cam.com/video/ilSqBCx4ygU/w-d-xo.html
@@jenmurrayxo This is the one I wanted to link to. It kind of fascinating to see what Williams actually does in the composition. th-cam.com/video/v5ysBKUC4-w/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ListeningIn
Jen, you missed a clue, Obi Wan's first lines, also they replaced a young puppet yoda with a cgi yoda in 2005, if you want to see what he looked like ,if you can find the vhs of this movie or look on youtube for Lisa Kudrow tries to be a Jedi, there was a skit in the 1999 Mtv movie awards where she interacted with that puppet
Queen Amidala's decoy is played by a young Keira Knightley.
Maul is my favorite character. This was the movie when he was first introduced to Star Wars. Loved your reactions. Can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of them.
Thanks! Ep 2 coming Friday & up now on Patreon 👍
Maul has recently become a favorite of mine too
'Hopes he's a good pulot'
'He was the best star pilot in the galaxy '
The lightsaber fights are definitely better. But from an in-universe point of view, you're also seeing Jedi and Sith at the height of their power. In the original movies, Obi-Wan was an old man, Vader was in a life support suit, and Luke was still a student until the end of Return of the Jedi.
And I absolutely love that they had Ian McDiarmid play Senator Palpatine.
True 👍 I hadn't considered that, makes sense!
Part of the reasons for the lightsaber duels being more impressive than in the original trilogy is that David Prowse, who played Darth Vader could barely when in costume. Also, Interestingly enough, this is not the last we see of Darth Maul, if you include things other than the three main trilogys that is.
Ohhh that's cool, it did seem a shame to kill if such a good villain in the first movie 👍
The decoy queen is played by Kiera Knightley.
Wow, those Jedi wardrobes are pretty spiffy: They don't even absorb enough water to drip on the gungans' floor, or leave wet footprints!
Oh yeah. Her Majesty ain't foolin' around, when it comes to hairstyles.
Seriously!! 🤣
Can someone tell me what the point of those forcefield doors were in the end duel? Why were they built in the palace?
I am also unclear on this ☝️
