RV caulking, how to stop leaks on corner rails / best caulk to use

  • How to caulk your RV. Aluminum sided motor homes, trailers and 5th wheels are a bit harder to caulk then fiberglass sided units. After 15 years and trying 20+ different types of caulk quad max has become my favorite. I use to use dyco 20/20 but noticed it cracked after a year or so. I switched to Pro Flex caulk which seemed to last longer but didn't bond well unless the surface was super clean. After using quad for the past 3 years its my favorite caulk for aluminum and fiberglass siding

    Man I’ve been searching for this video and technique for 3 years! I bout a used TT and the prior owner made a huge mess w caulk/sealant. Trailer has never leaked a drop but it is the only eyesore on an otherwise perfect camper! If I can get the old stuff off and cut back like you showed, I can re-seal! Without removing the corner trim.

    I had to fill screw holes with caulk and ran some around the shaft and screwed in extruding the caulk under the head making a good seal.

    My little tow trailer is dark silver with black corner trim. After going through Ida I noticed some hairline cracks in the factory caulk next to corner trim, especially around edges close to bottom. That white caulk will really not do. Does it come in grey or black?

    Dude, I have tried just about everything and every gadget for wiping caulk and a few years back an old guy says "try watered down dawn".... darn if it don't work.
    Mind you, don't get too much on yourself as you have said in the video ... if it runs down into any gaps, when you try to push the caulk into that gap it won't really stick. It might fill in but it's gonna peel or even slide down. Potential leak. Use just enough to wet the fingers.

    So why wouldn't you take the trim piece off and get some butyl tape underneath first? I would think cleaning off the old stuff would be faster with the trim off than trying to do surgery.

    • @ModernMessiah
      @ModernMessiah 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The wood is probably too rotted. I tried doing that one time and boy did I regret it. You have to rebuild all that wood.if you go to an rv place theyll charge you $5k to rebuild all that.

      I am pretty sure it will turn grey/yellowish tint in a few years. Our neighbor did this. His clear caulk now has a grey tint that stands out against the white trailer paint. Makes it look really dingy.

    • @Redfour5
      @Redfour5 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I asked a couple years ago and you are correct. Now at three years on mine a warranty fix at six months age they did with the clear stuff pretty much stands out as you described particularly since they were not very careful in how they put it on. @@keylockwood9487

    How do you bid on trailer recaulk jobs?

    • @ozzymandius666
      @ozzymandius666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look at the job, make a generous estimate of the time it'll take to do it, ad 50%, double that total, multiply by what you want per hour, and that's your bid, + materials.

      @@wheresbrent I'd go more often in harsher environments. Places that have more extreme temp changes will test those joints more. I use DAP extreme ultra in clear for areas that appearance matters. I use OSI QUAD in areas where I need extra stretching capability and can't wait for good weather to apply.

    Great introduction. "I've scene a lot of garbage video's so I thought I'd do one of my own". After viewing your video I do believe you have contributed nicely. To garbage video's that is. Removing the corner moldings is easy and the best method for cleaning out caulking. While your at it you may as well do it right and use the tape sealer on the corners prior to re-caulking with Dicor. Out of all the videos on this topic I've reviewed yours is one of the worst. Just saying.
