I’m sure the writers brainstorm, they probably pitch obvious stuff that gets pushed off because there’s not much there and well it’s rick and morty you can’t be obvious. They sift and sift until someone says something completely hilariously batshit crazy and it sparks laughter and discussion. The idea probably gestates for a while and they all come up with concepts until they get to the root of the idea. Then they stack characterization and story on top of the original idEa until eventually they have something they can criticize to see if its good enough. I’m sure it’s a hectic and combative process because people have egos and they think their ideas are all the best. Harmon probably has to tell a lot of people your idea sucks. Until it all comes down to something that works thematically and has a logic to it. Rick and morty is more layered than people care to notice. There’s a lot of subtext that I’m sure needs to be sharpened so it’s not hit you over the head obvious or preachy to the point of eye rolling.

No way man, you guys nailed the Pickle Rick episode. As a first time watch it is absolutely entertaining and hilarious. Watched it 3 times the night it aired, I've taken the magic out of the episode now.
Rick and Morty is probably the most brilliant cartoon to date. It sits perfectly between funny and tragic, its storyline are well written, all the characters are loveable even the less common ones aren't hated. Every plot ends perfectly and doesn't have unanswered questions. I could compliment this show for hours!

That season 3 April's fools was a trip man. I remember I was a freshman I'm college, and me and the boys had seen tweets that season 3 dropped but we chalked it up to April fool's. We loaded up the adult swim stream and it was just static, we left it up for about 30 minutes then out of nowhere the season 3 premiere drops. Low key a day to remember and I'm not even the biggest rnm fan, they nailed it.
Dan Harmon is so great. I used to love Community, then there was a season that really sucked and I stopped watching. Found out later that that was the season he stopped working on the show. He's critical for the quality of a lot of the projects he works on.

If you never went back to it, watch Community Season 5. He came back to the series for it (and the subsequent season 6). Also, one of the reasons we got Rick and Morty is because Dan Harmon was fired for season 4, during which Rick and Morty Season 1 was developed.
Agree with other poster...go back and watch the final 2 seasons. Not quite as strong as S2 or some of S3, but waaaay better than 4 and a nice end to the show.

Mine is when Dan Harmon goes to town on that doll. The way he pulls down his pants and thrusts really shows how experience and talented he is.

@dan hammon - no way that teasing pickle Rick was the reason why it went viral. I’ve never been to Comicon - but I’ve seen every episode of Rick and Morty and as soon as I saw the Pickle Rick episode, it was the only one that I rewatched over and over and over and over and over and over. I have shown it to everyone that will let me, and have watched it again by myself again. It’s amazing. And then I saw that EVERYONE liked it to. It made me feel a little less crazy. The episode is the best thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life. It’s incredible!!!!!!!!!

He was a smart man, Rick and Morty contains intelligent humor that helps to switch your brain off to get every one of those brilliantly crafted connections throughout the entire plot.
