The best part about RDJ saying "I don't break character until I do the DVD commentary", on the DVD commentary for this movie, he does the whole thing IN CHARACTER.
He breaks character and speaks as Neil Armstrong while saying "the script reads me." "I'm a dude (Neil Armstrong) playing a dude (Father O'Malley) disguised as another dude (Sgt. Lincoln Osiris)." Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) has completely forgotten who he is... Kirk Lazarus was pulled from the refrigerator upon reentry to Earth's atmosphere and through his agent found he had to be a gay priest. Of course Neil Armstong lacked acting experience, but went for Immersive Acting, but without the ability to remember his lines he dropped that and let the script read him. Why not? He's a strong astronaut who usually succeeds at things, but Neil Armstrong found it was hard to lose the persona of being gay and not knowing how to be a black man chose the "Roots" character of Chicken George for his accent, but no doubt it was unnerving to see himself in the mirror when he heard he was scared of himself. Neil Armstrong probably found it hard to understand himself as a black man. You gotta give credit to Tugg Speedman for knowing how to crack his opponent during an argument.
The part where he’s drawing on some dudes back in a bathtub explaining how they built the pyramids almost killed me. And yes you read that correctly, it’s a fucking trip.
I remember. He did most of the commentary with the Lincoln Osiris voice. Then near the end, when he pulled off the wig and contacts, he started doing the commentary in the Kirk Lazarus (Australian) voice. Then in the credits, he talked like himself. :)
The beginning of the film started seamlessly after the real trailers. It took a very confusing minute to figure out it was actually the movie. It was the funniest start to any movie I've seen!
I hope at some point you have or will find your way to the DVD commentary, he in fact did NOT drop character while watching the movie with Ben and Jack. Has to be one of the top 5 commentaries of all time!
This is one of the funniest movies of the 21st century. And actually, true to his character's bio, RDJ DID actually get nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in _Tropic Thunder._ Unfortunately for him, nobody was going to beat Heath Ledger as The Joker (in _The Dark Knight,_ of course) that year, but any other year, he'd have won. I think the biggest credit to his acting is that, even 15 years later, this film remains a comedy classic, rather than a film we'd all rather forget due to its controversial nature. Stiller wrote a comedy masterpiece, and I love to experience people realizing just how intelligent his writing is, in seeming contrast to his reputation as an actor.
RDJ is really good for playing an Australian who plays an African-American disguised as Vietnamese. But Tom Cruise really stole it with his big hands and dancing moves 😂
Tropic Thunder is a movie that has no right to exist, never mind to be as good as it is. If you want another fantastic comedy film, though it's not as absurd as this one, I suggest "Wild Hogs". Another great cast on top of their comedic game.
Probably my #1 movie (The Expanse is my #1 for every visual story telling medium). Only movie I can re-quote line for line, because almost every line is funny, quotable, or memorable. Yeah, Tom Cruise going to town on the first call and then dancing, still top-notch. I was lucky enough to have seen it in the movie theater back in college with friends. We only heard about it being funny, that was it, nothing else, so it was the perfect experience: The opening with the fake movie trailers is something that just works better in the movie theater, as it really took you a bit to realize that it was part of the movie. And most people didn't realize it was Tom Cruise until the credits, so the whole crowd in the movie theater let out a "wow" when the credits rolled, revealing him being Les Grossman.
Apparently after Tom Cruise read the script and Stiller asked him if he'd want to do it, his reply was "I wanna have fat hands... and I wanna dance." lol
This movie could have absolutely been made today, RDJ never got in trouble for being in black face because it makes fun of actors in black face, always punch up never punch down. Just like how Blazing Saddles makes fun of racists this makes fun of actors in black face.

This is a masterclass in comedy writing.
And snark🤣
Haha Robert Downey actually did the commentary in character. It should be on youtube.

@@BillionSix yeah that was both amazing and funny as hell

I heard Tom Cruise did all the dancing himself, without the help of stunt doubles or wires.
And Bill Hader was replaced by a nutless monkey.
😂
He usually does...
It's a bummer satire nowadays that shed light on injustices are overlooked when just taking it in at surface level.
Fantastic, really really enjoyed your takes. This is The Best Review of Tropic Thunder I've seen. Keep up the good work!

Platoon, apocalypse now, saving private Ryan, mission impossible, deer hunter, all referenced here. I’m sure I’m missing some
Tom Cruise looking like David Cross though.
RRR is a great Indian movie to watch.
First time i saw this i didn't even recognize that was Tom till the credits😅😅
Al Capone - the Rapper
Crazy you’ve never seen it, cool video
You have to watch Bill Hader talking about meeting Tom Cruise at the table reading for this movie. Btw, it’s Alpa Cino not Alca Pone 😂 👍🏻
The movie is amazing
