TNG Best of Both Worlds Battle Scene in 2.39:1 aspect ratio

  • I got bored and decided to edit the battle scene from BoBW into a cinematic 2.39:1 aspect ratio.
    Some scenes have awkward framing in this format, but this proves this amazing show wouldn't have many issues getting it to a 16:9 format.

      100%. It's baffling that they never again had an episode that was at once so thrilling and so dark. The stakes weren't ever as high for the remaining 4 seasons. Even two of the four TNG movies failed to achieve the same gravity.

      I agree. You know, as divisive as the show is, it would have been inspired if Shelby was the Admiral in ST: PICARD. She has such a strong baseline of characteristics that she would totally run over "Admiral Picard" or anyone else in her way if given the authority.

      I remember Shelby well. Would have been nice to have more friction, but that wasn't what Gene had in mind. It was good that she was there for a short time though.
      Nowadays she would just be seen as yet another feminist and they would probably ruin her with purple hair or some bullshit, but I think she had more under the hood and carried her own with attitude alone.
      She was right too. Riker was quite the little lapdog for Picard, but then again, that was his job. And when it came time for him to step into a bigger set of shoes, he showed he had the mettle.
      Shelby had the backbone for it too, but was a little too militaristic. That wasn't a failing of her feminism though, that was a characteristic she carried with her as a ball buster.
      Janeway had this too, but mellowed.
      Now, seeing Janeway and Shelby on the same bridge... Now that could have been interesting.

    • @kadindarklord
      @kadindarklord 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe Shelby was taken from a novel and the novel's author politely asked them never to use Shelby again. Something they largely honoured. The 'Shelby' mentioned in DS9 is MEANT to be her, but was never given a full name, which is good, because of the request.

    I'll say one thing, Geordi's commando roll looks WAY better in this version. In the original it was always pretty lame because he could obviously just duck under it, but here I think the fact you can't see the descending door until he's already rolling makes it look a lot more dramatic and urgent.

    The Enterprise D bridge set was modified for Star Trek Generations by raising the command seating areas onto a platform which raised them closer to the level of Worf's station behind the rail. This allowed better framing in the wide 'scope aspect ratio the film used.

Data being the one to rapidly switch frequencies, and it been shown by colour, makes it feel like an invincible foe has been (briefly) overcome by genuine ingenuity - rather than it feeling arbitrary and unearned when the previously invincible foe is suddenly defeated, like it often is when they try to write scenes like this nowadays.

    • @MrPaladino
      @MrPaladino 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not always. In "Balance of Terror", Kirk makes a lot of very specific moves where he spells out his orders, explicitly. Same with Star Trek II when they have to trick Kahn with the prefix code. And again when he's carefully guiding Sulu's moves while the warp drive is sabotaged in "Elan of Troiyus". Much like the "Shatner Cadence" (which Shatner himself mocks starting in the 80's on SNL), I think this is a case of the Star Trek "Mandela Effect" where people collectively misremember actual events.

      While I may agree she had quite a role in it, it's worth mentioning she was also surrounded with experienced officers who knew the gravity of the situation. Her smug look about the little victory over removing the tractor beam is probably arrogance and ignorance of the fact that the Enterprise does not have the tactical advantage at all.

    Nicely done. The 2.39:1 might be a little much for TNG but this does show that 16:9 would have worked fine. I can understand them not wanting to do the series itself in 16:9 but the feature releases like this could have easily been made 16:9 and people would have been happy.

    • @guspaz
      @guspaz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not that they didn't want to do the series in 16:9, it's that the show wasn't shot 16:9 safe. Many shots have c-stands and lights and other stuff just out of frame that would be visible if they had extended the framing. The only other option would have been cropping down, and that would have produced quite the outcry.

    • @dcb_75
      @dcb_75 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guspaz Yeah but they could have simple zoomed into the image slightly and avoided the stands and all that. And the excuse of image quality going down is just that because it was filmed on 35mm film - tons of movies use an open matt and then crop to 1.87 or 2.39 and there is no issue with the quality(Star Trek 6 is a great example as it was been released in a couple different aspect ratios over the years). We are talking a slight zoom, not doubling the image size. I think they even did that for the DS9 documentary on the HD stuff they had scanned so it was more than possible. As for the outcry, why would have complained on the special feature-length releases? BOBW was never released as a 90 minute episode so they are not actually changing something for the people to be mad about. They could have had that release in 16:9 and the episode on the season releases in 4:3 and there would have been no issue. Or just release 2 versions on the same disc - wouldn't have been tough to do. Like I said, I can see the not wanting to do the whole series like that and I agree but they missed a golden opportunity with the individual releases.
