The Pocono and Catskill Mountains on both sides of the Upper Delaware River have a rich and colorful history filled with stories of adventure, innovation, survival, and conflict. The story of Fort Delaware brings to life the story of the Cushetunk Settlement, from the first settlers that arrived in the Upper Delaware River Valley in the 1750s through its growth and to its ultimate demise in the 1780s. For over thirty years, Cushetunk thrived with most of its residents maintaining loyalty to Great Britain and they built two defensive forts, the Upper Fort and the Lower Fort to protect settlers from raiders. When the Revolutionary War broke out in 1775, loyalists from Cushetunk fought for the British and patriots fought for America. When Great Britain lost the war, most of the loyalists including those from the settlement moved to Canada. A few Patriots returned to Cushetunk but the settlement dwindled in size and the buildings and forts eventually fell into disrepair and were abandoned. Fort Delaware, built in the mid 1950s as a replica of the lower fort, was intended to preserve the history of the Upper Delaware and to attract visitors to the area. This segment is made possible by generous contributions from The Tianaderrah Foundation, Elsie Kopcha, in Memory of Herbert P. Hofmann, and Catskill Veterinary Services, providing life changing to life saving veterinary care. Visit catskillvetservices.com. Lacawac Sanctuary has a long history in the Pocono Mountains. From it's connections to the creation of Lake Wallenpaupack to being the first second home in the Poconos Mountains and quite possibly the Pocono's first vacation property for rent. Lacawac is not only a great place to explore but it is also an important scientific resource known for being the southern most protected glacial lake in the United States formed during the Ice Age. This segment is the final part of a 4 part series written and narrated by Chad Reed Watres, the great grandson of Colonel Watres, who had the original idea to dam the Wallenpaupack River to harness the Hydroelectric potential of the river to power local rail transportation. Part 4 covers the growth and accomplishments of Lacawac over the last several years as the sanctuary prepares for a bright future.
