    First actual video process of my Lol splash art process!
    I spent a lot of time on the thumbnail stage because we were not yet sure about the story idea. At first I tried to balance the 3 characters before getting a new sketch from the Riot artists where Rengar is more prominent. Unfortunately, I did not record thumbnail stage.
    3 Characters in one splash is very challenging but also very rewarding! Really love how this turned out. Couldn't have done this without all the help from everyone!
    Huge thanks to West Studio for this rare opportunity! Thanks to the Riot team for all the support!
    Some painting stats:
    -This video is sped up 95 times. The actual video time is 56 hours.
    - I use 10,000 x 5625 pixels as my Canvas size. It's a bit larger than what is required so that when it is downsized, it will be sharper.
    - This took around 100+ hours of labor in total including the research, referencing and thumbnail stages which were not in the video. I usually spend around 24 working days on a splash like this. I only work on weekdays and on a 8-am to 5pm schedule. This takes a long time to do due to the revisions and the amount of details needed.
    - This is a team effort because I regularly receive feedback notes and paintovers from the artists at West Studio and Riot Games so we can get the best possible result.

      Yeah that happens because I use one psd from the start and it inherits all the layers from the work I did from the past weeks. Including deleted sketches and some reference images, etc. In the end, only around 100 layers more or less are left. I'm aiming to reduce that hopefully!

    I thought the reason people didn't show the rendering process of the splash art was because of some contract laws, it's the first time I ever get to see it and it's extremely helpful!

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +114

      Luckily there are no contract terms about not showing the process. I think the only reason most splash artists do not share their process is because it takes time, effort and lots of HDD space to make these. Hope I can do more! Glad it helped you!

      @@deivcalviz Oh thats really nice! Makes sense, most people just wanna see a 10 minute video where you can see a lot of change happening, in a 30ish minute video like this you stop seeing that "change" happening at around 10/15 minutes, but in actuality thats because the details and rendering is being added so that the final work looks as breathtaking as it does! It's extremelly helpfull since me, an artist, gets really overwhelmed when i see a video of a splash that looks doable and then they show the final result which is miles above my current experience, that makes me just sit there confused. Videos like this one help me understand a lot more of whats going on so thank you a lot for this! And please do make more! Oh yeah i forgot to say the most important thing, great art! I really love what you do keep up the great work ^^

If there is a way you could do an explanation vid of what steps you do or just a general outline that would help me a great deal. There's just so much i don't really know where to start. Your work is absolutely stunning by the way-- this splash is probably one of my favorites in the game.

      @deivcalviz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can also do this using minimal layers but because of the nature of this job, I need to be able to easily revise stuff around. Having more layers means it is easier to move stuff, to change colors of some light effects, etc. To simplify how I layer, It's usually a ton of adjustment layers on top, then the character, and finally the bg. In between those, I also have some effects and some lighting adjustments. Also, I do have a gumroad tutorial which explains my process and some layer logic. It is called Overwatch Fan Art - Daylight Coloring Techniques if ever you are interested. :D

    Do you blend/overpaint your lineart into your painting or you just keep it in separate layer and then delete it later?

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually just overpaint and blend my lineart because it can be useful for crevices. The lineart can be used as an AO shadows if properly blended.

    Sorry for asking late but how did you manage ram usage for this piece? At this size and that much detail, my pc will break and brush lag makes it incredibly difficult to paint anything

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I currently have 32 gb of ram. Anything lower than that is not recommended. I think you can still work even in just half the size of what I do and still be able to do decent details. Then once you finished your image, you can just upscale it and sharpen a bit to compensate. Another method you can do is to separate the PSDs for major elements. When my PC was slower, I sometimes separate the BG psd and the Character PSD and then combine them at the end. Hope that makes sense!

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think during this painting, I only had the concept art to reference. The concept always comes first. The splash can be done simultaneously with the 3d model. :)

  • @C.Sc20
    @C.Sc20 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I notice a lot of splash arts/semi realism art the lineart just blends in with the coloring layers. How do you manage to do that?

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually merge the lineart with the rough colors once it is approved. Before merging the lineart, I recommend tinting it first with a similar color. In this case a brown hue. Also before merging, I suggest erasing the lines along the edges of the character so it doesnt interfere with the rim light. Then I reduce the opacity to around 50%, set it to multiply and merge it down.
      Finally once everything is merged, I treat the line art as if it was an Ambient Occlusion shadow and just smudge it into the shadow while I paint.

      Oh it's there. Maybe the video is just too fast. Its near the right middle area popping up sometimes. I use the color picker more often during the first few hours.. after that i mostly just use the eyedropper and use existing colors to "sculpt" out the forms.

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheMihig Hey, I think if you are in the early stages of learning art, I suggest focusing on reading up anatomy, perspective, color, etc before jumping into any type of specific tutorial. When you can already make your own stuff and just need a little push and learn efficient techniques, that is the time to get tutorials like what I have. Hope that makes sense. Also there are too many things I can recommend, for anatomy try to find the book Force, are go to more basics like andrew loomis, for colors, try the book Colors and Light.

    • @TheMihig
      @TheMihig 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deivcalviz OK thank you so much, i'll look these up.Though i already try to make my own stuff, it usually takes a very long time for me to finish it(a few weeks), and the result is never as good as yours for example. This is due to my fundamentals like color and anatomy not being that good yet so i keep erasing and fixing stuff, as well as me not knowing how to utilise photoshop and all it's functions.

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What comes first is the concept art. Once the concept art is finalized, both the model and the splash art can be done simultaneously. Although, it would be best if the splash art is done last because the model changes sometimes in the middle of production.

    I'm not sure why you used Akali's face as reference for Janna's?
    She basically looks like Akali now. Amazing job nonetheless though.

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good observation! The truth is that I referenced a lot of faces off screen including all of Janna's older splashes. What you see in the video was just half of my screen. In the video, I was mostly copying the low angle view of akali's face since that angle is really tough to draw.
      To be honest, I think most female characters in this style look alike. For example, in FF7.. Aerith's face is also very similar to Tifa's face. or maybe look at the female characters of Sakimichan... People like that style for a reason and it is not going away anytime soon but I totally get that the art world needs more diversity.... XD

      I use many layers so that revisions are easier. Don't mind the layer number. The actual amount of layers in the end is less than 100. Sometimes i separate highlights in case the lighting needs to be adjusted. I also separate parts that intersect with other parts so its easy to move.
