    Great vid, I think you're right, the P line really is the best of all the bromptons. And luckily, as it uses road bike sprockets... I just swapped the large cog on the back from a 17T to a 21T for climbing hills, make gear 2 a 19T, and put a 54T on the front. Now mine is great on hills and flats!!

    Great Video as always. Glad you got your commuting times down again.
    I carry my brompton unfolded, with the saddle on the shoulder. This is great for taking stairs and what not, it just hangs there and one can even use both hands with caution
    Rolling around with a rack on flat surfaces is great too

      That’s a very valid and tried tested method for stair climbing for sure! The rack is an absolute dream IMO and works amazing on a very smooth shopping centre floor

      Same Here. Best method for carrying a Brommie. For pushing it around, I exchanged those quirky awkward little plastic wheels for decent Rollerblade wheels. Works like a charm. I push it around like a wheelbarrow through those horrible Berlin subway stations and it's actually fun and I always never miss a train 😅

    That was a great review, you packed so much useful and comparative information into this video. You got a sub.
    I love bikes, love just using them as a mode of transport to get from A-B, not too fast, not too slow, enjoy the journey.
    On your comment that you would start with a C-LINE, Im very much a leisure cyclist, 3-4 times a week . Ive test ridden Bromptons and am 6'3 100kilos.
    But even with 4 bikes some quite old, Im not a bike mechanic.
    Id like to use a Brompton to do some of my daily spins in the neighbourhood (30-40km urban with some light trail) and also pack in the car to take on holidays .
    Could I bother you for any recommendations you might have. My budget would lean me to a C-LINE.
    Should I go with an off the shelf setup or get some shop customisation done.
    Good luck with your channel.

      Thank you so much for the comment and for the sub 😁. Depending on your terrain you might want to wait for the 12 speed c line but the 6 speed c line is a great bike with little maintenance but sometimes the chain pusher needs small adjustments. For sure get it with a telescopic seat post and with a High handlebar configuration. At 6ft 2 these were key for me. Hope that helps

    I got an emerald green P line mid rise a month ago, about 1 year and a half after getting a C line electric 6 speed to commute from West London to North London. The P line is an absolute joy to ride, and I would say that the 4 speed gearing is very suited to a flatish city. I really enjoy the smaller steps between gears, especially compared to the C line, where I would often be missing something between 2- and 2+ and 2+ and 3-. That said, it’s lacking range to climb hills, which is why I’m planning to replace the crankset for a double (have a 33/50 on order, might change the 50 to a 53 or 54 late), and attempt to install a front derailleur. If this works, I think this will be just perfect for me, good gearing range, and still lighter than the new 12 speed offering from Brompton!
    Once this is done, I’m hoping to take it to Cornwall and Alpine passes this summer :)

    • @TheBromptonGuy
      @TheBromptonGuy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Alpine passes sound amazing!! Good luck with that and also thanks for the comment. Great read. I also enjoy the closer gaps and have now just ordered a 40t chainring for my hilly sportive days

      You’ll have to give the five speed mod a try! I just did it on my P Line, along with adding an H&H 54/33 front chainring. Works well, but shifting back to the 54t chainring can be tricky. Can’t complain about 312% gear range though 😊

    I test rode a P Line and C Line courtesy of Hannah at Brilliant Bikes. I think the P Line is a lovely ride and suitable for flattish urban riding, but I found the range of gears limiting when I hit the hills. Plumped for the C Line because of the additional gears.

      @@TheBromptonGuy As an owner of a now more, well actually - much less than a former 2019 Superlight 6 speed, I would hardly know for what use I had the more gears? I think I would just find it extra complicated to find the gears to use!!
      After all a Brompton isn't an MTB or Racing bike, but mostly operates inside a much more limited speed range, on the small and - heavy rolling wheels!
      And it is a lousy "bike" from those!

    Rear rack/bag reduces the practicality greatly for me while adding cost and weight. Front bags hardly at all. If I had thousands to spend I'd probably go titanium not P line. My battered old Brompton works fine for intercity train trips and sub 5 mile links but I don't use it for "normal" biking, too inefficient. Thanks for the video.

  • @SingaporeUntold
    @SingaporeUntold 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    20:13 weird. my impression is that titanium is actually not stiffer than steel. you get the benefits of the lightness and corrosion resistance. but not stiffer. being on the fork and rear section could add compliance.
    I always viewed I think it was the chpt3 v2 as the best performing Brompton ever made. I suppose now you could argue it's the 12 speed p line. essentially an external only setup can never match an internal Brompton in speed. at most you have 60t front chain ring with a 11t rear cog limiting the top speed. a bwr sturmery archer will always drop an external.
    in terms of weight, it's a pro and con thing. basically you should match the bike to your needs. if you are hill climbing or carrying the bike a lot commuting then lightweight makes sense. I've talked to people with t lines who say you can only feel the lightweight in the acceleration from a stop. even then there is a compromise of ride quality as a lighter bike is more pounded by road imperfections compared to their previous c line. so it depends on your need. riding up a hill on a t line , the stem flexes so the person mentioned not to pull up on the handle which seems counterintuitive. anywho it's more of people who need to carry the bike.

    • @TheBromptonGuy
      @TheBromptonGuy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great input and detail thanks for contributing. I think the perception of stiffness maybe comes the suspension block then? Never looked at detail of how the difference of titanium and steel for stiffness but can just confirm from feel the p line feels way stiffer.

      @@LoostycYes, and yes!
      I bought my P Line in mid February, about two weeks after this video. It’s totally worth the extra money - to me at least…
      My P Line has no rear rack, and I got the shop to fit a 44T chainring, remove the mudguards (I prefer it that way), and replace the pedals with Speed large platform pedals - but I will replace those with the MKS Allways Ezy Superior pedals when finances permit.
      I found the Ultralight grips to be, well, ‘not good’. Replaced them with Ergon GP3 Biokork grips which are the best grips I’ve ever used. Huge difference in the handling; the Ultralight grips do the bike a disservice.
      I regularly carry it up and down stairs, and every single time I pick it up, even after three months, it still surprises me with the low weight and brings a smile to my face. Every time that happens I realise what I spent the extra money for, and appreciate it further.
      The performance is phenomenal, but it does require weekly chain cleaning and so on - as mentioned in the video. During the first month I had a few issues with the derailleur adjustment, but all of that has settled in now. I don’t want to speak too soon, but it’s starting to feel far less needy than it did during the first month.
      I chose the Midnight Black because I wanted something ‘stealth’ that wouldn’t draw attention to itself (a reaction to having the C Line stolen). Well, that was the wrong thinking, LOL! This bike is absolutely beautiful to look at, especially around sunrise and sunset or whenever the light is low and sets off the sparkles in the finish. I have often had people say “Beautiful bike!”, those very words, always the same. Just “Beautiful bike!”, that’s it!!
      I’m very much into lightweight since losing the C Line and getting this bike. I think it is addictive. You might find this interesting:
      My C Line had a 44T chainring, and my favourite gear was +2; on a flat road with no wind I felt like I could ride in that gear forever. On the C Line with 44T chainring, +2 has a development of 56.2 gear inches. I got the 44T fitted to the P Line so that 3rd gear would match the C Line’s +2, both 56.2 gear inches. Here’s the interesting part… On the P Line, 3rd gear feels too easy! I attribute that to the lighter weight, OR there’s something wrong with how the Hub Calculator on-line tool does its BWR hub maths LOL!
      I have the S bars and love darting through traffic, butt slightly off the saddle and crouching down to put a bit more weight over the front for steering. I enjoy riding this adroit little bike like a rocket through traffic congestion, and I especially appreciate the light weight when quickly stepping off, lifting it over a curb or barricade, and riding away. So much fun!
      TOTALLY WORTH IT.

    Some very interesting and useful comments (if somewhat discursive).
    You could install the Cateye in the recommended position over the front of the mudguard.

      @TheBromptonGuy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Short answer I’m unsure and doubt Brompton would ever disclose a figure because there are so many variables in let’s so road conditions, pot holes, jumping up and down kerbs etc. however my guess would be it would comfortable take 100-110kg prob getting worrying at 140kg above(have to obvs include any luggage weight). That being said I think if you are over the 110kg weight I would maybe question how great a Brompton would be as a choice unless you really need the folding options.

      Tern Verge X11...???. You cannot compare with a Brompton, they are different designs and engineering.
      If you could evaluate probably with a Dahon, top class, perhaps, but still they are different. Compare your Tern to Dahon, such as the "30th Anniversary Special Edition Dahon" model or the "Dahon Speed Pro TT" model.
      Remember that Tern is born from Dahon, after a family dispute. Do you know the story..??

    • @platypushatstand
      @platypushatstand 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Come back when your Tern frame has broken, because it will as it’s just a Dahon copy that was licensed to Ridgeback and Raleigh as well as other manufacturers.
      I brought my Brompton H6R new in 2012, prior to this I researched Dahon exhaustively for 18 months and joined their web forum as I was interested in the Speed P8 with a 4130 chromoly frame. But shortly afterwards, forum users stated that 4 year-old steel bikes were regularly breaking around the seatpost collar and/or at the mid-frame clamp point, whereas the Alu frames break around the mid-frame clamp point. The solution was to take it back to the dealer, who gave them a new bike and the broken one was thrown away, no attempt by the manufacture to rectify the problem, just hand out a new bike. Contrast that with Brompton, who feel confident enough to offer a 7-year warranty against the frame?

      Excellent answer, I like your comment. As I have noted, Tern was born from a dispute with Dahon's creator, Dr. David Dahon, a former NASA engineer.
      Personally, Tern is excellent in other models, such as the GSD and HSD cargo bikes. This is my impression and I have been able to test the models live, they are electric and fantastic.
      I agree with you on the comparison of the "Tern Verge X1" model with Brompton.
      Regarding Dahon, 4 years ago I bought the "Vigor P9 - Year 2020" model. Until today, I have not had any problems and it is very robust, has excellent/smooth stability and rolling. According to the dealer who sold me the Dahon bicycle, he told me that the Vigor P9 and D9 models have a very resistant frame, it is not very suitable for folding and traveling by plane, like a Brompton, but I can fold it to enter hospitals / anywhere, without inconveniencing access and security personnel. And the original grill resists 18 kg. Brompton resists only 10 Kgs., according to the manufacturer.
