Heavier projectiles have more momentum, so it can definitely be helpful for penetration through something thick in length. Energy is more dependent on velocity due to the equation having velocity be squared, while momentum evenly considers both mass and velocity. It’s also why I prefer using heavy for caliber 5.56 rounds for my home defense AR-15. 75gr. BTHP or 77gr. SMK can do a lot of tissue damage due to expansion, tumbling and fragmentation, but will also retain enough momentum to reach minimum FBI gel test penetration standards, which often lighter weight hollow point rounds will not.
@Fraser Fir True, it's not just momentum. Penetration will also be affected by how large the surface area the force is being generated at, hence why a .270 Winchester will penetrate more than a .30-06 with similar momentum. It's also why a sharper knife cuts better and why those Xtreme Hunter/Defender rounds from Lehigh penetrate so well. But momentum definitely does play a role. That's why a heavier for grain 5.56 hollow point will penetrate to FBI standards while 55gr ones do not.
This is a compliment. I know how you felt about the advertising and products but I have love the Poptart image in the beginning, particularly with the music. Anyway, thank you for the videos. I really enjoy the content.
Paul I love all your videos. I appreciate the time you take on them, the expertise and common sense you apply in discussions. I also appreciate how you always exemplify firearms safety and professionalism.
Great video! I've been thinking of getting this ammunition for my dad's M1A. I've got some of their .357 magnum. I'm glad to see you do this comparison.
I found that the Remmington Green and Yellow Box 150 grain hollowpoint was actually some of the cheapest brass cased ammo for my Tavor 7 I could find. So seeing it compared to other brands was a real treat for me.
The M1A/M14 gets crapped on because of it's military history. I'm not going to war with mine (I hope). I love the looks, love the feel and and has a great minute of deer accuracy.
Swiss 7.5x55 "GP11" has a 168 grain projectile which has a good ballistic coefficient of the boat-tail projectile. It is conceivable that although initially somewhat slower at the muzzle (muzzle velocity 2560 fps) that this is still going well after a longer distance. I have had good results shooting military poppers at 500m (1600ft) with the K31 and GP11.
Good info, thank you. And you’ve got a good platform there with the Swiss K31. Missed my chance to get one cheap a number of years ago and won’t make that mistake again.
Not super relevant to this video but I just wanted to say as a point of praise that you're the only channel I've seen use a large variety of different ammo brands and types when reviewing firearms and also the only channel I've ever seen that always provides this information on the ammunition used. Most channels just say "I've got my xyz loaded with .308", which knowing how much of an impact changing ammo can have on performance really annoys me, especially since a lot of those channels do a lot of penetration testing videos (eg "can xyz random object stop abc") which would likely have far different and more interesting results if done properly with different ammo types
As someone with very budget limited range time and only 1 caliber of firearm to train on (9mm pistol and rifle) videos like these are great educational material to learn about other projectiles and how they function. Always feels like I'm auditing a master class watching this channel.
I just brought an airsoft pistol to practice at home. Already had a pellet rifle. It's not a perfect option but it will help with ammo being what it is ATM.
@@mytech6779 I have health issues that have ended my career. I just don't have the money to try to shoot with every caliber that I'd like to try. I try to be proficient with a few of every general type of firearm, but I can't touch them all.
Pop Tarts a gunner's was to start! These 7.62 comparisons/applications are informative. HoP seems noticeably average to me. Tell us more about that M1A; it's very interesting. Great vid, Ty.
For what it’s worth, WWB ammo always seems to perform well and closer to advertised velocities than other brands regardless of caliber. Probably won’t buy any Payne ammo any time soon, but curious what it’s malfunctions were (feeding/dud primers etc).
The meat target is why I come here but the content of Pauls videos makes up my mind of what ammo to use. It is refreshing to see someone who is a old school shooter not relying on modern wizz bang gadgets to shoot his weapons.
I'm glad you've been asked to review the house of pain ammo, because otherwise in this day and age of scammers and the fact that I'd never heard of them I know it's an actual company. As always a great video Paul
Listening to the echos off the hillsides reminds me of my childhood hunting days in Coos County. My step dad gave me a bolt action .308 with a decent scope at 9 or 10 years old. Each year we sighted in our rifles which consisted of me shooting maybe 10 shots or slightly more a year and cleaning the rifle after each time it was shot including if it shot a deer or elk or bear. It was part of the ritual and not dreaded or loathed. And I eventually came to the conclusion that a rifle like that would easily outlast its owner or even several of them. Years later smelling the same gun oil and cleaner (Hoppes 9) still brings me right back. I have to admit and it may repulse some people but now that I am almost 50 and am just starting to get back into rifles again listening to people talk about shooting their guns and not cleaning after each shooting is like someone taking a movement and not wiping their behind (for lack of better words). So I will admit I still have alot to learn.
I can't even tell you how many times I have seen someone sighting in then 3 rounds in... Nothing on the paper. 20 shots later.... Still not on paper. I step in and look at the gun.... Filthy... Break out the bore brushes.... Quick clean... Run some patches till they don't look like aluminum foil. And poof magically back on paper and grouping. I'm convinced that there are ALOT of deer that get hit by cars instead of bullets because people don't clean their firearms.
I'd love to see those normal 9m monolithic hollow points on the meat target. The expansion petals look like they would do some insane damage, and would be interesting to see how much, if any, over penetration they would have.
Extremely widely expanding hollow points, from what I’ve usually seen, typically has a tendency to underpenetrate and not meet FBI gel standards. However, that doesn’t mean the round won’t be lethal, just that it won’t be lethal at all ranges, and if collateral damage is a major concern, it can definitely be a decent choice so long as you know you can land a frontal hit. It’ll be the same as using varmint loads for a home defense AR or birdshot for shotguns.
Nothing wrong with those expansion petals... but it needs more than 300-something foot pounds of energy. The concept works fantastically on shotgun slugs. Might work on an 10mm round. But 9mm is too weak for the concept.
@@gameragodzilla If the MHPs go through anything thicker than a t-shirt then they'll plug and vastly over penetrate each time, but if someone's wearing summer type clothing I think the round will do its job so long as it hits some meat first.
Good to see the Mil-Surp ammo included. In my Brownell's BRN-10 the Mil-Surp is superb. I was also surprised at how consistent velocities were within brands. They seemed to be a lot tighter than in other ammo comparisons. 7.62x51 and .308 have always been my favorite round. Nice work, sir.

Massad Ayoob has written and spoke about the optics of self defense shooting and defending yourself against a hostile, anti-gun prosecutor. The point being that in this day of anything-goes-to-win-a-case, your best choice of defensive ammo are the brands used by "your" local law enforcement. I really enjoy your channel, it’s one of the top 3 on TH-cam in my opinion.. keep up the hard work
I found that the Remmington Green and Yellow Box 150 grain hollowpoint was actually some of the cheapest brass cased ammo for my Tavor 7 I could find. So seeing it compared to other brands was a real treat for me.
I'm surprised you found a Tavor 7, I'm jelly.
Not hollow point. It's soft point.
As much as I’d like to start an AR-10 build, the M14/M1A is just SO beautiful…
Think you'll have more fun with the AR
Thanks for the video. I doubt that I'll ever get to shoot .308, but I enjoy learning about all things related to firearms.
Why not? Its one of the most popular sizes, even used as a NATO standard.
@@mytech6779 I have health issues that have ended my career. I just don't have the money to try to shoot with every caliber that I'd like to try. I try to be proficient with a few of every general type of firearm, but I can't touch them all.
Oh man, did my typical tuesday afternoon just get spicy. Mr Harrell with a M1-A! I'm all smiles😁😁😁
Quite informative... thanks for the 'distraction' Paul.. things be crazy out there
Pop Tarts a gunner's was to start!
Paul, thank you for every informative video.
Just blows me away that I've been watching Paul since this channel has less than 1000 subs.....wow!
Thank you, Paul, and a thank you to House of Payne.
It’s the people who seem to be proud that a firearm designed for self defence is left uncleaned for 1000s of rounds . Why take the risk ?
I can't even tell you how many times I have seen someone sighting in then 3 rounds in... Nothing on the paper.
20 shots later.... Still not on paper.
I step in and look at the gun.... Filthy...
Break out the bore brushes.... Quick clean... Run some patches till they don't look like aluminum foil. And poof magically back on paper and grouping.
I'm convinced that there are ALOT of deer that get hit by cars instead of bullets because people don't clean their firearms.
Another great video Paul .
At this point Paul is carrying the pop tart company with the free advertising.
For some reason when I saw the title of this video I wanted to jump around
I'd love to see those normal 9m monolithic hollow points on the meat target. The expansion petals look like they would do some insane damage, and would be interesting to see how much, if any, over penetration they would have.
They were specifically made to not over penetrate and there's lots of videos all over TH-cam of the round severely underperforming.
@Paul Harrell. Thanks for making these reviews! It's nice to see you lot the products themselves do most of the talking instead of some over hyped bologna! Best wishes to you and the crew!
Looks like House of Payne specialize in blaster ammo. As someone who loves to plink and prices being what they are, they seem like a good choice.
👍 Thank you Paul.
The shadow of the tree to Paul's left in the chronograph looks like it is flipping me off.
Thank you for the video.
Just started this video, but I wanted to say thanks Paul. I love your videos and how you show us how you get the results you do. Anyone who has a complaint can join our president at the retirement home. Ty again!
Those Pop Tart openings are amazing.
I’d like to thank Paul for introducing me to grape nuts. Tasty and more bullet resistant than your average cereal.
Thanks for the presentation, Paul :)
I always learn from your presentations. Thanks.
As a .308 or 7.62 x 51 junky, I give this video 5
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ /s
That's an impressive echo, rolling off into the distance 👌🏼
Thanks Paul for another video. As always, stating the facts and "you be the judge!"
Sweet rifle, I can still hear an echo while you were taking your next shot.
Thank you..
I love it when I see a new video! I should comment more often Mr. Paul here, Gun Blue, and Hickok are really the only info channels I go to for reviews etc, always a ton of information. I think we need to see more camper smoking haha
The Legend returns!
Anybody but me see a pattern with these demonstrations: the more "hyper" the name of "hyper" ammunition, the more disappointing the "hyper" ammo turns out to be?
I'm just thinking what a jury would say if you used it in a self defense situation. The Prosecution will have a field day with the name "House of Payne"🙄
@@co2gonzo Yeah, Fluffy Pink Bunny Marshmallows of Love is probably a better ammo company name, eh?
@@seanoneil277 yeah & if it was called Acme ammo a prosecutor would say you thought of yourself as Wiley Coyote. They will say anything, it's not about your life or right & wrong, it is a game to them & the goal is to win.
@@tombrown4683 That is the issue today in many jurisdictions. Massad Ayoob has written and spoke about the optics of self defense shooting and defending yourself against a hostile, anti-gun prosecutor. Ironically, Massad's made-up example brand of bad ammo name - "RIP" - was actually produced by some company. The point being that in this day of anything-goes-to-win-a-case, your best choice of defensive ammo are the brands used by "your" local law enforcement. The prosecutor can't call you bloodthirsty without so naming his own police. At least that is the reasonable thinking. Not all these guys are reasonable as we witnessed during the infamous Rittenhouse trial. GOD's blessings.
@@jackuber7358 There's also something about people fascinated with what the Police and Military use. Can't remember which video unfortunately. May even have been here.
Nice video Mr. Harrell
Awesome… thanks buddy…
I trust the House of Payne people are taking note of these reviews and working on product improvement. I give them credit; they seem willing to risk receiving a less than favorable review.
I love the Pop tarts intro! Keep up the great videos!
Great review thank you
Doing a mag dump into a pile of trash is way different when you have a 308. Whether it is a fn-fal, a m14, a scar heavy, does not really matter. The 7.62x51 is a monster
seems to be good people making the ammo, but they need a bit more QC to get rid of the inconsistent loadings. once thats taken care of, they would be a very good company to buy from.
Thanks
Thanks Paul
