Thranduil’s entrance into Ravenhill is so emotional because he’s clearly looking for Legolas and terrified that he’s about to see his only child lying among the dead.
If you think Thranduil is insane for wanting to go to war for some gems, then allow me to present to you Fëanor. He made some jewels called the Silmarils which were stolen by Morgoth. To get them back, Fëanor caused multiple genocides against his own people, crossed the ocean to fight off Morgoth, fought off multiple balrogs before finally being put down but not before commanding his sons to carry on the fight, resulting in the death of his entire line. Elves love to be all high and mighty with everyone else, but some of them are just dwarves with better hair.
In the original script, Thranduil was given a far deeper motivation for seeking those gems: it was not greed, but love. The gems were in fact gifts for his wife that she never got to wear and were later stolen. He wants them back as he feels they’re all he has left of her.
Its so emotional to see Thranduil act so confident and so sure of himself, even go so far as to banish the woman he practically adopted for daring to defy him and commit treason, until the moment Legolas defies him and turns his back in him. You see his entire being suddenly shift. He becomes this raw, fragile and absolutely broken expression of hurt and betrayal and guilt. We finally see Thranduil with all his walls removed and his true self is revealed.

Thranduil and Legolas are so alike when it comes to stubbornness
