I've been thinking about this lately, and for me, the idea of culling all predators isn't as straightforward as it might seem. So let's explore.
To a considerable extent, I agree with Richard that we can't ignore the fact that predators, by their very nature, pose an ethical problem when considered from the victim's perspective in the context of prey animals. Thus, it is morally valid to want to prevent predators from attacking prey, as this protects the prey's right to life in accordance with vegan principles.
The dilemma lies in the methodology of how we prevent the rights violations of prey animals by predators.
If we adopt the view that all predators must die, we face a moral conundrum: predators can also be perceived as victims too. Unlike humans, they cannot easily change their nature. They must either hunt, forced to adapt by evolving into omnivores/herbivores to survive on plants, or face death. Thus they cannot be blamed for this. The nature of animals is intrinsically tied to their will to survive and it's desire to protect their own well-being. Since there's very little we can do to change this, it may seem inevitable that we might resort to terminating them if conflicts arise between us, them, and the prey victims.
As mentioned before, recognizing that predators too can be seen as victims given their inability to survive on plants, an alternative approach is to contain them whenever possible. In a hypothetical vegan world with abundant resources, we could establish safe zones to protect wild prey animals while tranquilizing predators and relocating them to controlled carnivore sanctuaries. While I acknowledge that there may be instances where predators posing an immediate threat to life need to be terminated, this strategy aims to minimize casualties of both prey and predators. With the advent of lab-grown meat, we can just feed them that. The evolution of carnivores into herbivores is theoretically possible but since the process is highly complex and unlikely to occur rapidly, domesticating them in those sanctuaries will have to suffice.
The problem with this approach however is that the effort required would be tremendous. Firstly, maintaining large numbers of predators in captivity would require substantial resources, including food, space, and medical care. The financial and logistical burden of such an endeavor could be immense. Secondly, without natural predators, prey populations in the wild could increase rapidly, leading to overgrazing and vegetation depletion. This overpopulation could result in starvation, disease outbreaks, and habitat degradation. Unless we can effectively control their population, ideally through sterilization (so that they wouldn't breed) these are the challenges that we must be ready to face.
So far I've only touched land animals, addressing marine life may present an even greater challenge...

Even predators are victims of predators. Even baby top predators or top predators who are old and weak came also become victims of food rivalry or getting rid of older males so a young male can take over.
Honestly Mother Nature is cruel to animals on both sides. Predators can end up unalived when prey fight back.

I feel for Cip, he didn't want a debate but he got one, especially when Richard arrived, locked and loaded... Thanks to all of you, I found this really interesting. Thanks to Cip for representing what I think is the average vegan's position, and to the rest of you for representing an alternative position, which I think is convincing.

Saying we’re not including marine systems in this ideology is like pescatarians choosing to ignore marine life as a whole. I love this subject and find it super interesting but does not pertain to veganism. Veganism is a personal decision to reject unnecessary animal exploitation. Choosing to willingly kill keystone species who don’t have a choice and need to do so to survive in order to not only thrive but to maintain a balanced eco system is completely opposite to the ideology of Veganism . That being said I love this channel and love these conversations , hope to see more of it soon . Keep up the good work

I couldn’t disagree more and am happy to have a debate with you about several propositions in your argument here. I think it does follow logically from vegan values and I think it is morally justified to cull some predators. Write to me privately to debate for a future video.

After watching this I don’t really see why there would be a reason for me to debate since I think this conversation covered all the points i would want to cover, it would just be a mirrored conversation of this one . I think it’s a “agree to disagree” case . But next time I see you we can definitely have a chat about it 👊🏼 hope to see you guys soon

I would already disagree with your statement of veganism being only a personal decision. Are there any other injustices you also just see as personal decision? Because the way non-human animals are treated by most humans is just that: unjust. Veganism seeks to grant animals rights, and if animals deserve the right to life then these rights should logically also apply to "wild" animals, just as human rights are for ALL humans and not just a select few.
