  • The 406 Duo may be getting discontinued and these new iCharger Duos will be the replacement. With a 45 amp charge/discharge rate and 2200w ability, I’m all for it!!
    LiPo, LiHV, LTO, NiXX, you name it, these chargers do it! I'm super impressed with the review unit I have. I'll tear it down and see what's different. Stay tuned.

    I like the idea of getting more power out of a lower voltage power supply, but would have liked to see a modernized redesign over a 5 amp per channel upgrade. A big update I would like to see is a bigger/better screen along with smartphone connectivity. It would be amazing to be able to program all your presets and copy between chargers directly from your phone. Though I love my 406 duo, the interface feels like it's straight out of 2013, not 2023.

      Solid points my dude. ISDT has app connectivity and even smart plugs to monitor individual batteries. FMA had a system years ago that pioneered this.
      iCharger could have definitely done something along these lines. At the same time though, it’s nice to have an interface that people are already familiar with. And I haven’t actually opened this thing up yet, it could have a Bluetooth module inside or they could even have something via the USB C. Will report back 🤙

    Probably going to pass on these. I bought a icharger dx8 to play around with the high external discharge so I could cycle batteries to determine health. However, I was dissapointed with the small LCD and the menu setup is very cumbersome compared to my ISDT P30 chargers. So far the P30 is the best user experience and I ended up going with a dedicated discharger (East Tester ET5410A+) which is very accurate and has made my process reliable. The touchpad of the ISDT chargers is much nicer than the button/scroll of the icharger.

      Fair, that the p30 has a nice interface 👍 But the 458 is not the same as the DX8. The screen is bigger, the scroll wheel is nicer and having a TAB button makes accessing parts of the menu a little easier. Plus, you can test individual cell capacities which I’m not sure you can do with the ET5410A+. Please correct if wrong 🤙

    Hello, how many cells for Toyota Prius cars can be charged at one time?
    The cells are nickel hydride, abbreviated as nimh. Note that the capacity of one cell is 7.2 volts, or 6.5 amperes.
    Thanks.❤

    • @ChaddRainsFPV
      @ChaddRainsFPV  ปีที่แล้ว

      So the thing with NiMH is their ‘charge termination’ is decided by a thing called Delta V. This basically means that you have to charge above ~0.5c and below 1.1C in order to get it to activate and stop at the correct time, and also you cannot charge NiMH batteries in parallel.
      So the max is two Prius batteries at a time, one on each channel 🤙

    How do you get to individual cell capacity mode?

    • @ChaddRainsFPV
      @ChaddRainsFPV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s actually not a mode. You just charge the battery (lithium batteries with balance leads) and press status while charging. It will show IR and cell capacity

    Hey Chadd,
    I guess the ultimate question is will the 456 be a bit more powerful of a charger? Or do the 458 and 456 carry the exact same specs?
    Love my 406 DUO's and would like to get one as similar to this model as possible, especially if the 456 will be worth the wait vs the 458.

    • @ChaddRainsFPV
      @ChaddRainsFPV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the manuals say they will both have the same output amperage: 45 amps on both channels with a max of 2200w. So technically, the 458 will be more versatile because it can charge higher cell count batteries, but both will be limited to the same output amperage/wattage; The highest available by any iCharger 🤙

    Hello Chad. I currently run both iCharger 4010Duo's and discontinued PowerLab 8 Touch II's off 3 LiFePO4 100Ah batteries connected in series (40.8V maximum input voltage). I always liked the small size of the iCharger 308's (I often charge 7S 4500mah and 8S 4000mah LiPo packs), but the 30V input voltage posed a limitation for my needs, so eventually replaced them with larger size 4010 Duo's.
    Will this iCharger 458Duo work well with my 3 LiFePO4 batteries connected in series (40.8V at full charge)?

    • @ChaddRainsFPV
      @ChaddRainsFPV  ปีที่แล้ว

      So far the 458 has shown to be more reliable at 40v than the x12 and x8. I would still recommend not charging low voltage packs with such a high voltage power supply, as it’s a big job for the regulator circuit in the charger (if you’re only charging 7s and 8s packs you will likely be fine with a 40v input).
      Would love to hear your experience over the course of a year or so, if you chose to go this route 👍

    Hi, can these also be usde to charge 12 volt 120 AH batteries for the camper eunning off a 3.2KVA generator? Would save me some monies...cheers

    • @ChaddRainsFPV
      @ChaddRainsFPV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These run off of DC only, so your generator would need to be able to supply a very steady dc voltage, in order to run directly off of the generator.
      The charge would also need to be manually started, unlike something like an IOTA DLS-90, which I would recommend for your setup, over an iCharger. If the batteries you have are LiFEPO you can get a module for the IOTA. They’re generally a way better option for RVs 🤙

      @@ChaddRainsFPV thanks mate I will check it out. I have gone to lithium for the camper which has small solar connected. Going gold prospecting and want to deck it out. Have drones( just beginning my journey into fpv) so was thinking since I have a 3.2 kVA generator I could just get a server PSU and the icharger and blast in some power when I fire up the PS5 or just need to top up the bank. Otherwise I'm could go DC to DC charger @40 amps and more solar. I would like to have a dual purpose set up and most cost effective. I have some research to do...cheers from Australia

    Will there also be a replacement for the 4010 Duo ?

    • @ChaddRainsFPV
      @ChaddRainsFPV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe they will make something like a 4512 Duo or a 3012 Duo at some point. Which will be a dual port 12s charger.
      iCharger has not given me any info on this as of yet. But I did get confirmation that they could not make the 308Duo either, so that and the 406 Duo are (almost definitely) discontinued as of 3/2023.

    • @ChaddRainsFPV
      @ChaddRainsFPV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These chargers are not BMSs. You can’t leave batteries plugged into them when they’re powered down. They’re called smart chargers because they can charge just about any chemistry of battery but a thing people miss is that need to be semi-monitored during the charge cycle.
      There is a no Bluetooth connectivity with this device. The manufacturer intends for you to be in the same room with it while it is on all times.
      Hope this clears some stuff up 🤙
