8. Here in Canada the dollar is now worth about the same as a 1970 nickel. Pocket change is now worthless. Prices keep skyroketing as the dollar loses value. It's been going on for 50 years and neither political party here (Liberal or Conservative) managed the economy properly.
This is a really insightful video especially the point where we connect our self worth to our net worth. Sadly it has been aggravated by the habit society has of looking down upon people who live more simply and inexpensively compared to those who show off new possessions all the time.
Im here in the Philippines, savings is around $15,000 at 35yrs of age. If I compare myself to U.S standards, Im really left behind and almost poor. But here in my country I already belong to the top 4% of the population as life here is very poor.
I am not broke. feel broke because of my bad financial decisions over the last 55 years. I live my life by baby steps now and, sometimes, I have a lot of fun with it.❤
Good topic Austin ! I’m learning to be more frugal, but my husband is not, so I need to frugal X2. I know, it probably doesn’t work that way. 😂 PS He has improved. I’ll give him that. 🤷♀️
Hey Austin, I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your channel. I’ve seen almost every video now and I just really like how you speak to the camera, I think it’s always well paced without seeming like youre reading something. I’m around your age and also saved up a lot of money when I was younger to do an international backpacking trip, so I just really connect with your videos and learn a lot from watching. Thank you!
The people with the pricey stuff often don't own them. The bank owns their stuff. They want to look rich. My husband and I own everything we bought. Every.single.thing. We do not feel broke.
I (55M) lost my job in July and haven't even updated my resume yet. I have little debt and F-U money--not a million, not a half a million, but enough that I don't have to work for 6 years or better. I live frugally and don't buy crap I don't need. My car is 15 years old (Honda), and even though I hate it, I expect I'll keep it for another 5 years. I have, by and large, been completely unaffected by inflation.
When I started to watch this channel were 38k as far I can rem. Wow growing fast. U deserve it. U place a lot of hours l, hardwork. May Almighty bless you.
The point regarding "infinite growth" is very accurate. We are brainwashed by societal standards. When you are living your final days, no amount of things or money will mean anything. Also, you are not guaranteed another day. Never get too sucked up in the meaningless things. The future is not predictable.
At first I thought you were being repetitive to stretch out the length of your videos. I now am starting to appreciate it. Your style helps get your points across.
Many people are disabled and unable to work. If they’re lucky, they receive Social Security income slightly above $12k/year. Below the poverty line. They are broke! But they are not unsuccessful. They have overcome more hardship than most people can imagine. Every day is a struggle and they still manage to find a little bit of gratitude and joy to keep them going. In a society that ties self worth to net worth, these people do feel worthless. They feel depressed. The best they can do is try to find happiness with only their most basic needs met. Because unless their health and employability improves, they’ll be poor for life.
To some people I live in poverty. Take home $36,000/year. Because living frugal I am able to take 2 vacations a year; one cruise and one land based. Recently been to Aruba, Jamaica, Miami and Pensacola, FL; cruise to Bahamas, Cozumel, Cayman islands. Do I feel broke? Nope, I'm living the good life here in Tennessee.
I’m basically in the same boat. I make around $34k and travel twice a year. I don’t feel broke because I live below my means. Plus I’m single with no kids/pets/car.
Nope. Lived below my means. Saved a little each month. Power of compound interest. Pay cash for everything except my mortgage. Who care what other people have??
I've always said "social influencers" are the most effective advertising that has ever existed. Whether you are comparing yourself to them, or simply watching their advertising that is posing as content, you are much more likely to buy something over traditional advertising by far. I've been a victim of this when I was heavily into watching gaming content -- most all of that content is just advertisements for products. Most live streams are just full blown advertisements as well.
They don't consider them as strangers, and that's the issue. Influencers know how to make you feel like you're friends. They gain your trust over time and show you this amazing life that people aspire to, so they might feel that if they buy the stuff they promote, they might be like them.
Good points! I'm not technically broke but I feel like I never have any extra money (other than automated savings and investing). I'm broke because of lifestyle habits, and I don't mean cigarettes or alcohol. I mean Crio Bru subscription, collagen and fiber supplements on a regular basis, etc. These items add up and can get expensive on a monthly basis.
At risk of sounding reductionist, just don't compare yourself to others. It's always going to come back to bite you since inevitably we all get old and lose our power(s) in some way, regardless of how much money we have in the bank. Unfortunately our capitalist culture fuels this comparison game to keep us buying stuff we don't need. We must unplug and figure out for ourselves what's really essential and how much money we truly need. Great job as usual, Austin!
I felt broke in the USA. I moved to China 12 years ago. It's made all the difference. No car needed, no bills, inexpensive, good food everywhere. I easily save money in China. It was difficult for me to save money in the US.
If money made humans happy, richest countries wouldn't have the highest suicide rates especially among celebs. Money is one of the important things but not The most important thing like society makes it out to be.
It's incredibly subjective. For example - I live in a million dollar house. Sounds great, right? But the house was built in the mid 50s, is only 1300 square feet, has old plumbing and wiring, and is in a borderline sketchy neighborhood. Welcome to southern California.
10/10 would recommend keeping housing to 25% of your take home income! We do this and are much better off that the people around us because it seems everyone’s buying/renting more than they can “afford” and going with the highest they can get approved for making them house poor. Choosing not to be house poor puts you in a lesser living situation with a lot more disposable income and wiggle room, and can help you feel rich.
I'm definitely kind of broke, but it's not because of my salary - I make decent money in a pretty niche job role. It's because of lifestyle creep and irresponsible and wasteful spending. I have a 401k, but also credit card debt as well as medical debt (I have a chronic autoimmune condition). Just recently discovered frugality and simple living. Now I'm doing the snowball method and hoping to be debt free by February, so I can start socking away savings.

I feel broke, even though Im 25 and got $20,000 in assets. No house or business. I guess my baseline is just being able to have a paid off house to be considered not broke.
Broke: because your money just does not go that far anymore. Life is so much more volatile with more catastrophic money issues.
