What I DON'T Buy As a Financial Minimalist

  • 15 Things I Don't Buy As a Financial Minimalist
Society sells us much more than just material possessions, society sells us ideas and beliefs. In this video, I talk about "15 Things I Don't Buy as a Financial Minimalist;" However, when I say buy I am not talking about literal things I don't buy, but figurative things I do not buy.
    1. Success means money
Most of our lives we are told that you are successful when you have a lot of money. I do not believe that success is money, success is making the world a better place.
    2. You have to be rich to live your dreams
I traveled to 35 countries and paid for it with a job that was paying me $8/hour. You don't need a bunch of money to live your dreams.
    3. Money is complicated
Like most things in this world, we have complicated money and allowed it to control our lives. When you are in debt, money becomes more complicated with interest and payments. It is important keep your finances simple.
    4. Debt is inevitable
Debt is a cultural concept put in place by the man to control our lives. We do not need debt in our lives, live below your means and don't buy anything you can't afford.
    5. I was born broken
Society teaches us from an early age that we are broken and need to be fixed by getting a bunch of material possessions. You were born complete and do not need anything to make you more complete.
    6. Enjoyment is expensive
Many people think that they need to spend a lot of money to get enjoyment out of life. The best things in life are free like spending time with nature.
    7. Life is boring
    8. Millionaires are better than people with $0
    9. A life of luxury will make you happy
    10. Humans beings are serious
    11. I need to be constantly growing
    12. 24 hours is 24 hours
    13. You have to spend your whole life working
    14. We need a lot to live
    15. We own the earth

I don't buy that children need all that stuff the society tell us that they do. I don't buy that I have to get a bigger house in order to raise my children well. I just don't buy it at all.

I am a retired 69 year old man living in Southern California.
I long ago decided that my retirement activities would be near zero costs and be of physical and psychological benefit.
I hike with friends, workout at the gym, borrow books from the library, play piano, and garden. My average monthly cost for these activities is less than $25.
No one needs to spend money to be happy.

Great video. I have a degree, worked 50 hrs a week, had no time, no energy, was stressed. It took me 20 years to pick up a courage to quit my job. Now i work part-time as a cleaner, no stress, lots of time and energy. Guys, I've never been happier! I am frugal, i buy only necessary things. I dont have a car, i got a bus pass, and i walk everywhere i can. I eat out once a month if any. I cook my meals at home, its cheaper and i know whats going into my food. :))) I dont need expensive holidays, i live near a nature reserve and i walk there with my partner every Sunday to connect with nature. Its free for us as we have local passes. I trully achieved a peace of mind. We dont need much to be happy.

Can we talk about how wasteful Christmas and gifting in general is?! I like the concept of family, spirituality, and gratitude around Christmas, but society at large has made it about "stuff" and I despise that.

One trick saved my life years ago, if I really wanted something, I would take a picture of it and look at it for one month. 95% of the time after that month was up I didn’t want it anymore. You are so cute and so smart!!! I am so glad I found your channel! I am sorry for this generation that is growing up in this era of consumerism. I grew up in the 60's and 70's when we didn't buy anything!! No fast food, no Walmart, no designer crap!!! We didn't have a garage full of junk either, only the car lived in the garage!! Houses had small closets because we didn't buy a bunch of clothes that we didn't need!! I had six brothers and sisters and we truly believed that we were rich! (we weren't)
We were happier and less anxious. I literally never heard of anxiety when I was growing up!! Keep making videos and teaching people the true meaning of life..you are awesome!!

I have the same philosophy when it comes to success. Because I've been frugal all of my life, I've managed to retire with quite a nice nest egg. But the best part of my life is having the time now to volunteer at a food bank, and I also make meals for the homeless. It's more fulfilling than any job I've ever had or any luxury I ever had.

I just got to say, we have a lot in common, so many people can’t believe us but, my lifetime dream has finally come true. I’m in my 50s I raise 10 children successfully. All are out of the house and doing well. I raised them without any government assistance from the age of 40. My oldest is 40 my youngest two are 18 and just graduated tonight. When I was a child I knew 3 things, I was going to have a large family, I loved to travel, and I wanted to live my life for the Lord. For the last 10 years I’ve pursued plans to travel. As I saved, I also planned. I sold my house my business and my van and turn it into a camper. God blessed me so much that my van is really about a 45.000 van. But I paid 26.000 plus 9 to build it out and install solar. I guess my point in all of this is to say, if I can achieve my dreams anyone can. I am far from me of money. I just know how to work and I hate any form of shopping. I love to look for the deals on necessity items and I also get that euphoric feeling of saving like people get when they spend money and take something new home.

I love your wisdom! Before I answer your question, may I tell you that while lots of people, mostly boys, think farts, pooping, and diarrhea are funny, there are lots of people who don't. What I don't buy is that just because I'm a low income elder, my life should be miserable. I have a rich life full of friends, yummy homemade meals, music, movies and books. Most of my medical bills are covered by Medicare, I live in a nice rent controlled apartment, and drive a low mileage car that's nearly paid off. Life is good!

And i no longer follow any fashion and hardly buy any new clothes anymore (except for some underwear and stockings every now and then, and shoes),,,, when i was still working i always bought very good-quality clothing, have been wearing these the last 20 years and i ll use that up the next decades too. .... I only buy now clothes when i gained a lot of weight and need a size i don t have already in my wardrobe.

One thing I do as a financial minimalist - that provides the best return on investment - is read. Reading fiction activates your imagination. Reading non-fiction exposes you to the wisdom of other people. I almost never buy new books. Though used books can be a little more beat up, the content is the same. A $3 used book can give you valuable tools that you will use for the rest of your life. The shame of our culture is that there is so much wisdom in books - but many can't be bothered to read.

I heard a young entrepreneur brag that they never went to college and "I could buy and sell these graduate school kids ten times over." Funny, because I wouldn't trade my education for any amount of money. I don't buy that being rich is an inherently more desirable state than being middle class. I feel pretty good about the decisions we've made and I like my life a lot. That's all that really matters.

I will be 25 this year and I managed to "escape" this script. I got a student loan at 19 (not even knowing what that really meant) and went abroad. I am lucky student loans in the UK don´t require you to pay them off when you earn below a certain amount (excluding benefits for disabilities or unemployment). I finished university, but I realized I couldn´t work full-time because I suffer from a severe mental illness. I basically live off benefits and occasional part-time jobs earning less than 400 $ a month. And I still manage to save around 50 to 100$ each month. Sometimes I don´t earn anything and live off disability benefits that are about 200$. Even in my country, most people would not be able to live on that without ending up on the street. But I manage because my mother had the same ilness and we were always so poor we struggled to keep a roof over our head. She taught me how to be frugal (or life taught us to be more precise). I don´t want to be homeless and my health does not allow me to work as it is expected of me, so not buying things is the only option. But I am not unhappy. I believe my greatest hapiness are the times when I am not very sick. Health is more important than money.

Putting well-earned money into the stock market can be over emphasized for first-time investors, unlike a bank where interest is sure thing! Well, basically times are uncertain, the market is out of control, and banks are gradually failing. I am working on a ballpark estimate of $5M for retirement, and I have a good 6-figure loaded up for this, could there be any opportunity for a boomer like me? I'm nearly 60.

It's a good idea to seek advice at the moment, unless you're an expert yourself. As someone who runs a service business and sells products on eBay, I can tell you that the economy is struggling and many people are struggling financially.

I agree, having a brokerage advisor for investing is genius! Amidst the financial crisis in 2008, I was really having investing nightmare prior touching base with a advisor. In a nutshell, i've accrued over $2m with the help of my advisor from an initial $350k investment.

The decision on when to pick an Adviser is a very personal one. I take guidance from “Gertrude Margaret Quinto” to meet my growth goals and avoid mistakes, she's well-qualified and her page can be easily found on the net.

Number 11… 😯 I’ve pursued “self improvement” relentlessly. Two university degrees, loads of courses, thousands of pounds a year on therapy! It’s exhausting and expensive and it’s never enough. I’m beginning to think it’s a red herring so when you started saying no. 11 I sat up and listened!! Thank you, Austin 🙏🏼

Incredible insight, Austin! Happy to see folks in my demographic chiming in as well. I feel we are living in a modern day Babylon, and my husband and I decided about 2 yrs. ago to work our way out of it. Challenging yet definitely a more rewarding path! Thank you for the inspiration!

You are such a blessing to me to me this year! Your videos will help me stop spending unnecessary things and my goal this year is to save more money than the previous years. I probably have to use cash to really cut the spending because swiping the cards just doesn't work for me. We are not in debt but I can do better. You are an angel saving people from stress, depression and other mental or physical illness. I think the stress that people have nowadays is one cause of the illness people have.
