Jackie Wilson took an old, hoary Irish ballad in "Danny Boy," and turned it into a beautiful blend of vocal gymnastics. There will never be another Jackie Wilson.

This is the recorded version. To truly appreciate the man you just became acquainted with you have to hear him sing this “LIVE”. The difference between him and most others is his live performances were as good as the recorded version. There was no one like him. PERIODT!!!!

8:49 Thank you for reviewing this song's performance. I have long been a fan of Jackie Wilson and finally got a chance to see him LIVE in 1967 (yes, I am that old). I was a teenager, who also happened to be a musician, and one of my greatest memories is of going backstage with my friends, who took me to the concert, and meeting Jackie in his dressing room. He was the headliner, but also on the bill were other stellar artists like Aretha "Queen of Soul" Franklin, B.B. "King of the Blues" King, The Drifters, and others. It was a huge Soul Revue and everyone in it, especially Jackie "Mr. Excitement" Wilson, lived up to their reputations with their live performances.

He recorded this song in 1952. I was a young kid but remember my folks watching this on tv. I still have all their Vinyls of Jackie and many more.

I'm really glad someone reacted to this great singer. IMO Jackie was the greatest singer of the rock and roll era. He could sing anything: gospel, rock and roll, standards, R & B, pop, light opera, anything. But most interesting was how everyone stole his athletic stage act, from James Brown to Michael Jackson. Anyone that plays with the microphone stand imitates Jackie. Listen to him singing "Lonely Teardrops", "That Is Why", the incredible "To Be Loved", "Reet Petite", "She's Alright", and his last hit "Higher And Higher". Elvis Presley was a big fan and yes, he did try to imitate some of Jackie's singing style. When Jackie suffered his heart attack Elvis paid some of his hospital bills, which was expensive because Jackie was in a coma for 8 years. Elvis then bought Jackie's tombstone. Jackie was highly influenced by Clyde McPhatter who was the original singer of The Platters. I'm glad you picked that up. RIP to Mr. Excitement, Jackie Wilson. We'll never see his like again.

@@ThePaulieShow Another great and incredibly underrated singer was Lisa Fischer. Lisa was the subject of the film "20 Feet From Stardom". Listen to her live version of "How Can I Ease The Pain" live from the Tokyo Dome in 1990. She was the total package. She is still alive and occasionally performing around my native Brooklyn. She is still a beautiful woman, and she can still hit that F6.

Okay. The song is about a mother saying goodbye to her son who is leaving to fight in WW1 -- "the pipes are calling."
Jackie Wilson was an R&B singer with an almost operatic voice. His range was phenomenal. He influenced every singer who heard him. Had a tragic personal life and died relatively young. They should do a movie about him. He was truly GREAT.
And by the way: this is a live appearance but not live audio. He's lip syncing to his record which is what they usually did back then for TV. Notice there's no microphone or orchestra in the video.

@@ThePaulieShow Jackie Wilson and Tony Williams of the Platters were the best R&B tenors of the past 70 years. One or two of their contemporaries came close. But no one has since. In comparison to the truly talented vocalists of previous generations, today's singers can barely even sing.

No, he did to take opera lessons, but he did record 2 songs, both Top 10 hits that were based on Arias from opera. Also huge hit,"Alone At Last",based on Tchaikowsky's Piano Concerto.th-cam.com/video/7QR_YQGgDWY/w-d-xo.html
