Liv, the main thing for you and the younger viewers to understand is that the Soviet Union was a one party system. Nothing was to be done or made known that would make the Soviet Union look bad. Therefore that is the reason for all the lies and coverup for this and so many other things. The KGB was used to "cleanup" the "problems" that occurred from time to time. If you embarrassed the government you literally could find yourself in a Gulag (hard labor camp) or missing (dead). Fortunately there were some very brave people who risked their lives and their families lives by going against the "party line".
Tbh nothing has changed ever since then, the immigration crisis of 2015, pandemic of Covid-19 in Europe, hell even the recent election of Joe Biden has been a disaster. And don't you dare to say that the shit has hit the fan, you're going to be called racist/conspirologist/etc. That's some new level of fucked up, real talk here
The soviet union's first major nuclear disaster was the Kyshtym disaster in 1957. They successfully covered it up, but it's one reason Russia has far less farmable land than it looks like on a map. The KGB didn't realize Chernobyl was worse than that. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyshtym_disaster At around the same time the USA had its own highly classified nuclear disaster at Rocky Flats, which it also covered up as a Cold war secret claiming that Denver has "naturally high background radiation" rather than admitting they poisoned a city. They kept it classified until 2000, and even did FBI raids against protesters in 1989. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioactive_contamination_from_the_Rocky_Flats_Plant
The weird and horrifying part about radiation poisoning is that first you get really sick, then you get a bit better and then your body starts melting.
Well, extreme radiation poisoning is like that. We all get a little radiation poisoning every day from radioactivity in the ground, from radon leaking from the ground, from space, from sleeping next to someone, from eating bananas etc. but pretty much all life on earth has evolved to compensate for that for as long as a species need to survive. :)
@@mscheese000 "Then it's meaningless to call it "poison" in those instances." Not really, it's just really slow working. All life takes damage from it and repairs it more or less successfully. As time passes the chance that something goes wrong increases. In humans that would mean eg. cancer. Part of the reason that half of cancer cases occur in people under the age of 66 and the other half in people over 66. "The incidence rates for cancer overall climb steadily as age increases, from fewer than 25 cases per 100,000 people in age groups under age 20, to about 350 per 100,000 people among those aged 45-49, to more than 1,000 per 100,000 people in age groups 60 years and older." Of course radiation is not the only poison that life is exposed to over time.
They say if your vomiting from radiation it's a sign that it's reached your stomach so your body is attempting to fix the problem by evacuating what it believes is in your stomach and intestines. Much like the flu
The KGB was the Soviet equivalent of the CIA and FBI. They were an intelligence agency and secret police that spied both internationally and domestically. The Soviet Union was a very authoritarian regime, and that they used the KGB to control the population and suppress internal dissent. Also, that line about needing to bury the earth under itself to shield the radioactive contamination is true. In fact in the current war in Ukraine this year, the armed forces of the Russian Federation invaded *through* the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, among other fronts. The disturbance of the ground around the old reactors by the treads of tanks and heavy equipment actually caused the ambient radiation to increase. Additionally, the poorly trained and uninformed Russian conscripts began digging defensive earthworks and trenches in and around the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, and they dug down to where they buried the contaminated soil. Several dozen received acute radiation poisoning and a number of them died, so the consequences of that cursed place are still real.
Nyarf, it's somewhat of a misnomer to compare the KGB to the CIA and the FBI. The CIA exists to spy on foreign countries and the FBI is, essentially, police. PS: Of course there has been misuse by the CIA and the KGB Whereas the KGB not only spied on other countries, but as a rule, also spied on the country's own population. A better comparison would be the East German Stasi.
MI5 and MI6, to put it in British terms. Or the Tal Shiar or Obsidian Order, to put it in Star Trek terms. They also operated as a secret police similar to the Nazi SS.
The KGB ( Committee for State Security in English) was the Soviet intelligence organization for espionage, counter espionage, foreign intelligence. Handling protection of state borders, political crimes and most importantly guarding state secrets like Chernobyl. Anyone who thought about telling anyone the truth would risk the KGB arresting them for threatening the state. What made them terrifying is that they could be anyone and anywhere. Your coworker, the manager, or even your neighbor. They were also the largest intelligence organization with 1 million agents
Thank you for your reaction Liv, just a few points - in reality the divers torches failed for good, but they knew the pipe layout so they managed to navigate in the dark to the valves, obviously complete darkness doesn't make a good viewing experience so researched Soviet hand powered of that era and replicated them. Also, regarding the state of the fireman they toned down his actual appearance and what his wife had to do for him, as it would be far too horrific to show. The story of the fireman's wife was taken from a book of 1st hand accounts of the Chernobyl disaster called "Chernobyl Prayer: Voices From Chernobyl" or also just "Voices From Chernobyl" by Svetlana Alexievich. The contents are girm stuff and recommend having some tissues in easy reach.
KGB was a Soviet equivalent of Gestapo in Nazi Germany. It was the Secret Police of the State, that kept citizens under its iron fist and crushed any sort of dissidence with no mercy. Soviet Union was not any modern Western democracy, where people have their basic rights quarenteed by law. In Soviet Union, the laws were made to protect the integrity and prestige of the Communist Party, to which all the citizens were subjects to. Soviet Union was a totalitarian dictatorship, ruled by almighty Communist Party. KGB was the most important tool for the State to keep its power and citizens in line.
KGB = "Secret Police". The next episode is BRUTAL. The final episode explains (mostly) what happened and WHY it happened. Hang on through the next episode...and you will get some (not all) of your questions answered. Nice job.
The KGB are a security agency that protect the interests of Russia. Through spies, surveillance, obductions, torture, etc. Where the KBG look to prevent the incident from being public (can do no wrong), and ensuring the rest of Russia runs smoothly (no panic or outrage), and help force people to sacrifice themselves for the state (state > lives).

"It never ends!" you say. It really never ends--the 100 sq. km. exclusion zone is and will continue to be uninhabitable by humans for 50,000 years. Civilization has only been around at most for 12,000 years so far--how can we warn people to stay out of the exclusion zone after civilization inevitable falls?

Wales, parts of North England and here in Scotland were all contaminated with Chernobyl radiation thanks to the heavy rain that fell when the radioactive clouds passed. It was only a decade ago the restrictions for farmers selling sheep due to the contamination were lifted and to this day Loch Ness still has alarmingly high radiation levels......

No offense, but I've got to tell the truth, it's disheartening to see something showcasing the Soviet Union and someone wondering why people are being spied on.
Some people don't pay attention and are ignorant to such things, especially since the Soviet Union dissolved well before most people who watched this show could either remember things or were alive at all. In Western Society, the Soviet Union is just taught to kids as being authoritarian and communist, that they were the enemy, and oop now they collapsed because communism sucks. That's really it. It's why teaching history, civics, and social studies as a whole is arguably more important than things like math. Kids should deeply study the institutions of old and why they were replaced so they can secure a better future for themselves and the next generations.

Radiation's effect on soft tissue like skin & muscle is to cook it like a microwave. which is not something you ever want to happen to a living body.
Oh man, hats off to reacting to Chernobyl! Thankfully it's short and concise but still harrowing! Perhaps next Andor! Or Miyazaki animated!
The show chose not to visualize Akimov as he was one of the worst condition especially after the exposure he got.
The flesh on one side of his face had slid off his skull.
The effect of radiation they show us in these miniseries is a family friendly version. In reality everything was 100 times worse and scarier

Russia's KGB is like America's CIA but they were a lot more sketchy during the cold war.
Correct, but in the last several years the CIA/FBI have been closing that sketchy gap with the KGB at lightening speed!
