I agree with other commenters. I think he was so loyal to his work he wouldn't think of opening the packages until he was absolutely desperate. And one special package he set aside to have some hope of his old life and his own future -- to at least deliver that one package.
In an interview Tom Hanks said he'd choose to follow the girl in the truck. I would too. :-)

Whales are known to help guide boats that are adrift in the ocean in real life. There are many many reported cases of this. Some are on video. The open ocean is actually quite clear, usually. When I lived in Hawaii, even the water close to shore was incredibly clear, most of the time. Deep water isn't murky like it might be closer to shore. They filmed the first part of the movie and then took a year off so Tom Hanks could lose a ton of weight, grow out his hair and beard, to film the rest of the film.

Forgive her she is from the UK. I was born and raised in the South Pacific(Hawaii being one of the Islands i lived for awhile) and I live in the UK now. A bit of a story behind the filming of this movie. You would imagine that the second half of the movie would be filmed first. Logically, Hanks could trim down, and lose weight before the start of filming. You can get out of shape a lot quicker for the second half of filming the first half of the story..However, Hanks wanted to film it sequentially, the way the story is written. Robert Zemeckis (who also directed him in Forrest Gump) was in a bit of a pickle. What would he do with the crew if Hanks had to take off a year to transform himself?..He didn't want to lose his film crew in that time..What he did was sign on to film another movie ("What Lies Beneath", w/Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer) which enabled him to keep his crew working, and gave Hanks the time he needed to trim down..From what I understand it's never been done before..I guess if you're Tom Hanks you can do that sort of thing.

28:23 - This is a genius ending because the director left the ending to the viewers. We get to decide what Chuck is going to do, Zemeckis gave us both options: One half of the screen chuck is looking at the lady driving away with a subtle smile on his face, the other half we see the open road in the opposite direction. Personally I think that this situation in real life would resolve with Kelly divorcing after some time and going back with Chuck.

    2. Can you imagine how much back pay this guy is going to get? He's not a rank and file worker either. He's an executive.
    3. From IMDB: To make himself look like an average out of shape middle aged man Tom Hanks didn't exercise and allowed himself to grow pudgy. Production was then halted for a year so he could lose fifty pounds and grow out his hair for his time spent on the deserted island. During this hiatus
    4. Extremely resourceful
    5. In a recent interview Hanks says that Chuck went back to Belinda (the Winged lady). Inside the first package was her divorce papers.
    6. The speech that includes, "I had power over nothing...." is what gets to me.
    7. Wilson was Chuck's connectivity to sanity. That's why he kept talking to him.

Thanks so much for reacting to this movie! One of my favorites of all time. One thing that goes unnoticed by some people, the movie isn't named Castaway...it's Cast Away. Many people have that feeling of being left behind, alone in their little world, cast away from society, perhaps during the loss of a relationship or whatever. This movie is ultimately about hope and endurance, do NOT give up. Who knows what the tide might bring. The area of the crossroads at the end of the movie is right where I grew up in the panhandle of Texas, near Canadian TX. It's such a wonderful choice to shoot that scene A literal crossroads where one can choose any direction to head out with no landmark to judge by. You do a great job, love your reactions.
One other quick thing, "Wilson" was the result of the writer purposefully stranding himself on an island for a couple of weeks alone to see what it would feel like. There really was a Wilson, he adopted the volleyball as a companion and wrote him into the script. I love that.1

I remember watching this in the theater back in 2000. As bad as he wanted off that island, after 5 years it would actually be hard to leave. When we was in the military and would deploy overseas, we missed home and I missed my wife. But, when it came time to rotate back, it’s a wierd feeling, even after
Only 5-6 months. Once we get into a routine,it’s hard to break. I don’t know how to describe it. It only last for a little while and by the time the wheel are up and your in the air, you can’t wait to get home. He was in that island for 5 years. When he looks back, the music isn’t triumphant, it’s sad, like it he’s happy to have escaped, but sad and maybe scared.

The ending scene between Kelly and Chuck is heartbreaking.💦 Love has always been a double edged sword. If not wielded responsibly someone will always get hurt. Kelly realized that the injury had already occurred, however not intentional. But she did the responsible thing. She knew to sheath the sword for the greater good. No further injury required. great movie, great reactin as always Liv. I see you are a Tom Hanks fan. If you never saw Forrest Gump I would recommend to do a reaction on that next. Also an underrated movie with Tom Hanks - The Terminal

If you want to see a man alone on an island for a period of time but in a lighter vein, you might want to watch "Father Goose" starring Cary Grant.

    1. It's a good thing he wasn't strapped in that plane. He would have died.
    2. Can you imagine how much back pay this guy is going to get? He's not a rank and file worker either. He's an executive.
    3. To make himself look like an average out of shape middle aged man Tom Hanks didn't exercise and allowed himself to grow pudgy. Production was then halted for a year so he could lose fifty pounds and grow out his hair for his time spent on the deserted island. During this hiatus
    4. Talk about using realistic tactics to survive.
    5. Wilson is exactly what he needed to maintain sanity.
    6. In a recent interview Hanks says that Chuck went back to Belinda Wings. Inside the opening scene package were her divorce papers.
    7. The speech where he starts with, "I had power over nothing...." is what gets to me.
8.Tom Hanks is the best actor of my lifetime. I'm 61 years old. If you want a serious movie The GOAT to first time/share do "The Green Mile". You WILL cry. I promise.

Certainly the film has a few plot issues, which we can forgive, but the timeline with Kelly always bothered me. We know that Chuck is missing for four years. We also know that Kelly is married and has child, over a year old, when he returns. If we assume that she didn't get pregnant until after she was married to Dr. Lovett then she had to have married him within two years of Chuck's disappearance. That seems very quick to lose the "love of your life", search for him exhaustively, decide to move on and meet someone new. I can see her being with someone else, or even being engaged, but already being married and having a family seemed rushed. Just my two pennies.

in the original script, the package was divorce papers. Kind a campy. I'm glad they left it a mystery.

The terrible irony of the contents of the package is that it was a satellite phone the wings lady was sending to her x husband.

Yes, this movie was very sad, but at the same time very "uplifting".
After 20 twenty years of thought, I think the ending is very good and positive. 😉

Awesome reaction Liiv!! If you wanna check out some more light hearted Tom Hanks films, 'The Burbs' is great (could be a good one for halloween season) and 'The Money Pit'
