    One soldier who was interviewed afterwards said he came up to something he couldn't identify because its skin was basically melting. He recognized it was a cat when it meowed. It was a mercy what they had to do.

    They were drafted. They simply used a school as an assembly point for the draft in the previous episode. Regarding the "egg baskets", it's uncertain if this was a real thing, but the idea is that although they were not expected to get any high dosages of radiation, they were worried that even a low exposure would damage their cells in the long run, and the cells producing sperms (and eggs) in particular are more sensitive. It could prevent you from getting (healthy) children later in life. At least that's what they thought, and better safe than sorry I guess...

    Dyatlov wasn't near alot of heavy radiation. Akimov and Toptinov were literally soaking in it trying to open the feedwater valves. Sitnikov looked down on the reactor from the roof into the radiation field, the two trainees were in the same area as the exposed reactor. That's why they all died and Dyatlov lived.

      Sitnikov didn't look down on the reactor. He wanted (by himself) go to the roof but never managed opening the metal door closed to access the roof of Unit 3. He got his dose with Akimov and Toptunov when he joined them to open the valves.

    In Russia (and the soviet union) 2 years military service is required for all men 18-25. When chernobyl happened, new conscripts were given the choice of 2 years doing service or 6 weeks at chernobyl. It seemed like an easy pass on yhe service but the real dangers were not told to them.

      This is the first time I hear about it, although I live in Russia and met several times with the liquidators of this catastrophe. I know for sure that they took men from 35 years old who already have children.

    Bacho may talk tough (and probably really is a tough guy), but he is actually quite kind-hearted. I don't know if he was based on a real person or not, but if so, I bet he became a kindly grandfather.

    I think you will get many of your answers in the final episode (5). As noted several times...this series gets the details "mostly" right. Some things were "simplified"...as the details would be lost on most of the audience. The lady physicist is NOT an actual person in reality, but she represents a "composite" of many people who figured out "what" happened. As I believe I noted in comments on episode 2 or 3, you should check out the videos Kyle Hill has done on his channel (he's actually BEEN inside the current containment structure at Chernobyl). Thanks for the continued review. More details, less "difficult" scenes in Ep 5.

    At the current exchange rate, their 800 Ruble bonus is worth slightly less than 7£. Even in 1986, the real world purchasing power, if exchanged, would only be about 150 to 200 £.

    the effect of radiation on electronics. electronics are tiny machines for shuffling electrons around. when you shoot highly energized particles into the middle of this the energy from the particles bleeds off into the electronics & disrupts the delicate flow of electrons causing the machine to fail. it's like it's like taking a firehose & pointing it at an irrigation system. the hose washes away the walls of the channels disrupting the flow of water.

    The main interest of the Soviet state is to avoid being embarrassed. The information that was censored pointed to failings on the part of the U.S.S.R. in constructing the nuclear plants, which would contradict the basic tenet of the state, which is "In the U.S.S.R., nothing can go wrong." The main interest of the bureaucrats is to shift the blame elsewhere when something does go wrong. Such is life under a dictatorship that imagines itself a Utopia.

    I think they show us the people shooting dogs and cats because these people were hurt as well. Many got radiation sickness, but even those who did not paid a heavy emotional price. Imagine having to do that, for three years. Imagine what it would do to your soul.

    Oh, and those three men who went into the reactor to drain the water? They not only survived, they didn't even get radiation poisoning. I can only attribute that to a genuine miracle.

    • @voiceofraisin3778

      They were wearing full rubber suits and breathing gear. The water soaked up a lot of the radiation, the survival gear kept them seperated from the water.
      When they went down there it was expected to be a death sentence, it turned out they werethe best protected guys around.
      Its shown in the series that eneral Pikalov took a truck with the dosimeter into the facility, in real life he used a specialist armoured car and had his own team of military analysts with him, he was head of the Soviets chemical and radiation warfare devision so had access to all their specialist gear.
      He's another one who was exceptionally well protected although in his case he picked up a cripling dose of radiation damage from working round the reactor in the weeks after.

    Yup, Dyatlov was the one who actually survived the accident since he wasn't that contaminated by radiation. All others including Akimov and Toptunov died within the next few months who got lethal dose. Bryukhanov and Fomin survived too, but Fomin was suffering from severe mental illness, which caused him to lose his mind, and only in certain moments he could regain his mind back to normal.

    I recommend the movie "The Chins Syndrome" for fictional suspense movie based around nuclear energy. Although, I am pro nuclear power, i thought it was a good watch. In a bizarre twist, around the time the movie was released, Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Station in the US suffered a near meltdown that was caused almost exactly like the incident depicted in the movie.

    "Miscarried that baby after spending time with her husband."
    The show got that completely wrong. After taking a shower and changing clothes, the firefighters would not be dangerous to anyone. Lyudmila's problem is the radiation she absorbed while at Pripriat.
    And no, the baby absorbing the radiation made no sense.

      The problem is that we're discussing what we know now, back then there was a lot more confusion, misinformation and folk myths, they tried to show it with the old time doctor trying to use milk on burns which is great if your a peasant mother out on a farm, maybe not the best idea if your a trauma Doctor.

    • @jalfd1

      It's not completely stupid. At this point, the radiation is coming from below them, as radioactive particles have settled in the soil. So shielding your groin effectively protects the rest of your torso as well. Your feet are somewhat less susceptible to the radiation than your genitals and internal organs are, so it's a decent way to protect the parts of you most at risk from the radiation.

    • @nickmiller344
      @nickmiller344 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jalfd1 I don't think that's how it works during a radiation leak of this scale lol

    • @jalfd1
      @jalfd1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nickmiller344 Ok. You're allowed to not think that. It's true though. Keep in mind that this was months after the explosion. Remember the footage of the liquidators sweeping the area with geiger counters. Why do you think they did that? Could it be because the radiation was largely coming from the ground at this point? Fragments from the reactor were scattered across the area, on the ground and in the soil. And of course, a bit of lead under your balls wouldn't work miracles, but it *did* provide a small bit of shielding between the source of the radiation and your torso. That is a good thing.
      But if you prefer to believe something else, I can't stop you.

    • @nickmiller344
      @nickmiller344 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well thank you for "allowing" me to think that covering your balls isn't gonna prevent any harm even months after the explosion. It's not me "choosing" to believe anything. It's just how it is. Based on factual evidence people that went there even a year after the explosion without protection died within a couple of years due to exposure. Your logic doesn't beat evidence of my point being proven right. Don't try to tell me if those people covered their crotch that they'd still be alive

    Who signed up for this?
    All Soviet males had to do military service. This involved a lot of full time professionals running a never ending stream of half trained conscripts, the system got abused and as did the conscripts, the amount of corruption, extreme bullying and even rape and murder of of young men still goes on today but it was worse then.
    If you were in the infantry then the chances are you would be sent to Afghanistan with its contant risk of ambushes, landmines and the chance of being crippled in a system which claimed it looked after the sick and injured but left them in badly funded hellholes instead.
    Compared to that volunteering for a 90 second job that meant you could never do military service again seemed like a good idea!
    Some of the senior troops found out the risks, General Tarakanov lists examples of at least one sergeant who made four trips onto the roof to save the kids from having to do it, other men made the same choice.

    Brutal episode this one , sad for all the animals but if they hadn't done what had to be done it would have been just horrific for the animals. I have no idea mentally how anyone would cope with losing a baby to find out the baby had saved your life but at the same time knowing you did this by not doing what the doctors said 😢 what a mess . One episode to go Liv by this point as great as the series is I just wanted to finish it and watch something happy 🙂

      That incident is complete fiction not based on reality. If a human body is too radioactive to be next too the person is already dead within minutes, like the guy shown opening the door and then bleeding out soon after.
