  • Here are two things you can copy from Roger Federer & Naomi Osaka that’ll greatly improve your serve:

    After tossing, lift your racket up to chest level and have the strings facing down

    Bring your racket in over your head and knock off a birthday hat

    Big thanks to @zenrackets and @wtca for allowing me to use their footage. Be sure to follow them on Instagram.

    How To Serve Like Roger Federer and Naomi Osaka

  • @jkn1951
    @jkn1951 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Excellent footage of Fed and Osaka. My friend was on the court and having difficulty knocking off the party hat. I then remembered the phrase "CHIN UP" . If you look at the footage both players bend their heads backwards so that their CHIN IS POINTING UPWARD. This makes it easier to knock off the party hat. Another important aspect is how they both bend their knees down and outward to make it easier to get that CHIN UP. Thanks Ryan for putting together that footage and your palm down drill. Great Stuff!

    Your presentation skills alone are amazing. I am mainly working on my serve, one-handed backhand, and doubles “strategy.” Your videos have helped. I asked the head pro at the tennis club about taking a lesson, and he replied (partly because of my age) “just keep doing what you’re doing.” I’ll keep the $90 he charges per hour for a lesson, and continue watching your videos.

    Ryan: I’ve started playing tenis after more than 30 years (I was a child) and I had to start almost from scratch. I have been watching your videos daily, some of them, more than twice, even 3 times and make some practice at home. Then, go to the court and start practicing under real conditions. I am having HUGE evolution. My player partners say I’m getting a very solid backhand. I have to improve a lot my forehand control. I didn’t have a clue of how to serve.l but now, I’m starting to serve like you teach. I’m doing the party hat movement in my last videos, but I am very inconsistent yet. Keep practicing. I will send you a video. Thanks for your videos, the best by far in all the internet. Keep going please! Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽 city.

    I looked at this yesterday and went on the court a couple of hours ago and practiced this motion , especially the right arm motion and path from trophy pose and how the racquet head travels over my head.. I think that’s a point to emphasize anyone watching .. wow !! Couldn’t miss a serve.. played 2 sets 2 double faults.. I’m a 4.5 player so not a novice , but always struggled with serve consistency in matches.. thanks for taking the time to do this, best serving instructions... wish I learned this xx years ago.. but at least I can teach my kid the right way.

    Ryan, I've learned from you about coiling, tossing, and strings down close to the scalp racquet head take back. It's starting to sink in to my mid-brain. What doesn't seem to be happening is improvement in the next set of motions to develop increased up and forward racquet speed and controlled contact with the ball. Maybe two minutes on those would help. BTW, I know you wore that shirt Tuesday and can prove it.

    I've tried the "birthday hat" move based on your earlier video a couple days ago in my club league (two sets against two different 4.0 opponents). I introduced this without practicing it, just to see if I could do it, but I was suddenly serving bombs. I normally serve around 90mph, but I think I gained 10mph easy. My first opponent was constantly late. In my second match, I suddenly lost the coordination and had to go back to my previous motion. But as soon as I have time to practice it, I'm just going to work it in stably.

    bedst and clearest explanation I have ever seen..You could say You are making an S when you are hidding the top of your birdsday of.Many coaches leard there students to pull there
    students pull/droar there racket to fare back with a stragt arm which make a hinch / stop in there serv motion. and they don"t let there palm stay down long enough. Your (and Rogers
    way) Secure that your swinning insigt out just before impact wich gives the ball alittle bit of spin and makes the ball hit the box much more safely. (?) Thanks and greetings from Olaf Denmark.

    Right at 1:39 Roger reaches what is called a trophy pose, with the tip of the racket pointing up to the sky and then starts to make a proper racket drop (hitting his "birthday hat"). Osaka does the same at 1:51.

    • @2MinuteTennis
      @2MinuteTennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct! Thanks so much!!

  • @alexbianchi3357
    @alexbianchi3357 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What you say is all perfect till to the trophy position, however there is an unexplained key concept. Much of the power comes from the inner shoulder rotation, which many confuse with pronation. The drive of the legs serves to rotate the internal shoulder in the opposite direction. If you look at Roger, the racquet face turns upward to the sky, it does not remain palm down, because the inner shoulder must be loaded like a spring. In Federer's movement, the racket, while remaining close to the head probably does not touch the birthday hat because the rotation plane is different. Without the inner shoulder rotation it is impossible to serve at 200 km/h

    At what point of the circular swing should you let the body take over? Is it once the racquets gets above the head, I assume the racquet dropping and the arm cocking is a side affect of the body driving upwards not a deliberate movement

    • @2MinuteTennis
      @2MinuteTennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s important to drive the legs up as you hit the birthday hat. That maximizes the racket drop and circle that created. Thanks!!

      I am not Coach but tennis video has proven a player can go from the palm down position in this video to contact and the ball will drop about 1 inch. You may simply be tossing below your contact point but if you get the ball up to the contact point or just a few inches above, you CAN get from palm down to contact very quickly. Try putting your racket up to the contact position and looking at it. Then when you serve, toss into the visual image of your contact point.

      The timing is both crucial and difficult. We have to time it for bending legs, coiling and exploding while the whole elbow, shoulder, wrist motion is happening, not in steps. The misconception it took me long to discover is the "stopping" part of trophy position. It just happens in fractions of second during the whole motion (the "stop" actually happens when players release the ball and they are fully elongated upwards before starting the bending as ball travels upwards). So much timing...but thanks to this kind of videos, thanks man, I realize more the actual flow of things. A good warm up is always handy...lol.
      (Maybe a video of things to drill to have the final motion flowing?)

He gets few things right but then his demonstration is all wrong,, there is no chest up at all, there is no bow and arrow posture, no bend, just compare what Federer and Osaka do - to what he does. Does that look the same or even close? If you follow his advice, knocking birthday hat while standing completely upright - it would be impossible to achieve proper racquet drop.
