Great, energetic performance with Gabriel in a leather jacket -- I just ordered The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and am looking forward to immersing myself in it.
What's really amazing, is how unusual this song was for Peter's solo career. Unlike most people who leave a popular group and move on to a solo career, Peter built his career on a complete split with his past and not playing music from his time in Genesis, but entirely of post Genesis works. Yet, also was able to reach the level of popularity but still being different, not a pop rock musician but someone who ended up very popular, with well known songs without selling out his musical roots.

Saw this tour in Detroit. It was so great to see PG free of the shackles of Genesis. This song, like a lot of side 1 and 2 of the Lamb is best hard and raw. " I don't care who I hurt, I don't care who I do wrong. This is your mess I'm stuck in, I really don't belong." Gabriel was going punk lyrically in 74.
@@earthling2007 I agree that "shackles" is exaggerated and ingenerous, but it's clear from this video that in those years the desires of Peter were not reconcilable with those of the group, especially Steve's. Actually Genesis, under the steerage of Phil, were going as well to write groundbreaking stuff like "Abacab" or "Mama", but in much later times.
The best thing to ever happen to Genesis and Peter Gabriel was their parting of ways. They both got bigger and improved after they separated. Peter Gabriel always had a highly theatrical flair for his music, especially in his live performances. His performances were not confined to his music playing and singing; he added drama, stage presence, acting, costumes, props, lighting, and visual effects. This man is an actor, director, singer, and musician on the stage, and live performance on stage is his forte.
And Phil Collins wanted something completely different. He wanted to be a commercial pop star. He had to do it carefully though. On Genesis' first release without Peter Gabriel, Trick Of The Tail, Collins had to sound as much like Gabriel as possible.
I saw him live at the Hollywood Bowl back in I think 2013 or somewhere around that time. I was a young teen. He was an old man. He was more incredible than ever, with more energy than most. And the stage art he had was so creative and epic. I was sooooooo lucky.

What's unusual with this? Peter Gabriel solo, doing old Genesis material. He's built his solo career almost exclusively on his solo material. That says a lot right there. He's really had two separate outstanding careers.
this is version from the year 1978 - played by a Peter Gabriel band from that year. It was the punk-era etc. It doesn`t have to Sound like the Album Version. The Artist can perform the song the way he wants. Some like it, some don`t.
You got that right. I like both versions, this one, and the Genesis/Phil Collins one from Seconds Out, which is more melodic. Peter just seemed more full of energy, and wanted to get the crowd going.
It's not even really that different, but I agree. The album he was touring at that time was the closest he'd ever come to punk with tracks like On the Air, D.I.Y. and Perspective and tracks like the title track and Back in NYC from the Lamb sort of fit in with that sound - so it made sense for the encore here and made the old fans happy all at once.
With the young Tony Levin on bass! I saw them in Bordeaux on the same year, or maybe before, there are some smoke clouds on my memory of these times...
It’s a hard job to live up to one of the fastest Tony Banks pieces, it’s a good one. Fun fact, the keyboardist is Tim Cappello, the sax man from The Lost Boys, before he took up bodybuilding.

Saw this tour in Detroit. It was so great to see PG free of the shackles of Genesis. This song, like a lot of side 1 and 2 of the Lamb is best hard and raw. " I don't care who I hurt, I don't care who I do wrong. This is your mess I'm stuck in, I really don't belong." Gabriel was going punk lyrically in 74.
terry blake shackles of Genesis? That’s where this man was at his best and most brilliant.
I realized this sec he included some words from George Benson's classic On Broadway in final verses!
@@monikaszymanowska5142 Well, they were there since the original album 🙂
@@marcofaustinelli7010 Oops, there is no excuse for me:-)
Peter Has so Much Energy and STAMINA It is AWESOME.!!🤗🤗🤗💯💯💯💯💯💯💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
That s the Peter Gabriel that we like it ! Raw and Shock ! Incredible musicians then and now ! We need more of this ! Thanks for the post !
Except it's not Peter Gabriel ...
@@ghostbirdsoundchips 100% Gabriel
AWESOME show...Gabe was peaking !
Peter got better, and Genesis got more popular but most die hard fans would say not better. I liked the Phil years myself.
And Phil Collins wanted something completely different. He wanted to be a commercial pop star. He had to do it carefully though. On Genesis' first release without Peter Gabriel, Trick Of The Tail, Collins had to sound as much like Gabriel as possible.
What I loved about Peter's live performances is how often he forgot to hold the microphone to his lips.
Its because they were Big musicians at the top of their art..but Peter was the driving force of inovation and what a VOICE
Dig the nut-smuggler pants! Nice Pete! These dudes were so high on the blow, obviously! Glorious.
The character of Rael is a rough, punkish character. Gabriel is just doing the character justice.
Mark Terene oh
He does all characters justice.

I just love this double-time version!
What a great show, up close and personal with PG and the band. Thank you so much for posting these videos!
is that Tony Levin? yesss. one of the all time greats.
Master class ! 😀
I saw him live at the Hollywood Bowl back in I think 2013 or somewhere around that time. I was a young teen. He was an old man. He was more incredible than ever, with more energy than most. And the stage art he had was so creative and epic. I was sooooooo lucky.
for me ,,,,nobody can replace peter as he is so great
I don't know if it stunned me the most this punk version or Tony Levin without mustaches!
Un artista straordinario, con una voce straordinaria grande Peter Gabriel. 👍
This brings me back to the Lamb tour in England ... I was still at school and we had to que up all nite for the tix at bham hippodrome!!( they only have ballet and panto on there now) ...still one of fave concerts along with Boston at Stafford ...yes that big cowshed....
Wow... this is great! Thank you for sharing this.. Too fast? Too punk-ish? Too rockin'? Hahah.. it's Peter Gabriel! he doesn't give a shit to what you are thinking!
correct
Sooo....is he a punk? ...or is he Cartman..."I don't care! I do what I want!"🤔🤤😜
that is a freeing feeling not to care what people think, I need to get to that place.
Dude the "sax guy" from lost boys Tim Cappella on the keys......great utility musician
What's unusual with this? Peter Gabriel solo, doing old Genesis material. He's built his solo career almost exclusively on his solo material. That says a lot right there. He's really had two separate outstanding careers.
it is 1978 he not had too many albums pusblished and is four years after The lamb album
Dammit! I was 15 years old when this tour happened, How on earth did I miss it?
this is version from the year 1978 - played by a Peter Gabriel band from that year. It was the punk-era etc. It doesn`t have to Sound like the Album Version. The Artist can perform the song the way he wants. Some like it, some don`t.
Well put!
You got that right. I like both versions, this one, and the Genesis/Phil Collins one from Seconds Out, which is more melodic. Peter just seemed more full of energy, and wanted to get the crowd going.
For SURE..punkish, love it man.
That's
It's not even really that different, but I agree.
The album he was touring at that time was the closest he'd ever come to punk with tracks like On the Air, D.I.Y. and Perspective and tracks like the title track and Back in NYC from the Lamb sort of fit in with that sound - so it made sense for the encore here and made the old fans happy all at once.
With the young Tony Levin on bass! I saw them in Bordeaux on the same year, or maybe before, there are some smoke clouds on my memory of these times...
I miss the days when rock stars wore gardening gloves during encores. Kids these days just have no idea :-\
And traffic vests!
I still have some of those gloves, and ARE terrible.

@@joseislanio8910 I remember those ones -dreadful.. I bet he drops the mic
Great rockpalast Konzert von Peter...😎
I’ll wager the keyboard player didn’t look up “ how to play Lamb lies Down” on you tube. He did a great job.
There was no YT then, I'm sure he didn't.
It’s a hard job to live up to one of the fastest Tony Banks pieces, it’s a good one.
Fun fact, the keyboardist is Tim Cappello, the sax man from The Lost Boys, before he took up bodybuilding.
@@juanblanco3187 hilarious!🤣
bloody awful
The Lamb ! quel chef d'oeuvre ! incroyable !
LOL! All these comments crack me up. This was their encore. They were pumped and full of energy after a badass show. Want it to sound like the studio version? listen to the record!
James Faerron yep!
James Faerron - YOU are right !
+1
This proves - you can`t do Genesis song for the encore outof breath :-)
true. this was 78. you could say this was almost a punk version of TLLDOB
Incredible composition!
Tony Levin without moustache…
Now i’m seen everything!
Gabriel always said that composition of the music was 'The centrepiece of all our ambitions!' But he was up there with Bowie for stage presence too. A fearless explorer of the human psyche.
Let's just say it wasn't what I was expecting and that's more than O.K.
The most mesmerizing singer ever.
