Of course, Sam Gagner scoring 8 points in one game tying the record for most points in a game! That’s a pretty absurd record if I say so myself! It was pretty humiliating for the Blackhawks to go through that embarrassing 8-4 loss!
The zamboni driver was well protected by the hurricanes stacked defence. Still good on him but that game wouldn’t have been memorable if the hurricanes had stacked defence.
And the fact he's a Leaf's practice goalie, meaning he's good friends with the team. The Leafs weren't going to light up a friend of theirs who was playing in his only NHL game. It was a lose/lose situation for them.

It was crazy how many fights there was last season i fucking loved it. I feel like it was cause teams had to keep playing each other so towards the end they just wanted to kill eachother
Should be noted that Kevin Bieksa took the face-off in place of Kellan Lain. Lain was playing in his first NHL game, and, knowing what was coming, Bieksa stepped up in an attempt to prevent Lain from fighting on his first shift. Obviously that didn't happen, and Lain ended up getting tossed for the rest of the game. Lain's parents and brother were also in attendance that night. Unfortunate way to start off, but a good story nonetheless.
The Bruins have lost their bite. I don't think it's the same these days. It's too bad they did so bad then they picked 3 1st consecutively a few years ago. If they hadn't gone off board with those picks they'd probably still be a team I'd want to avoid.
Dave Elenbaas, a backup goalie for the Habs in the 1970's. He has a fighting major without playing in the game. You can't find stats about it, because he dressed for 29 games I think, but never played a minute in the NHL. He can't have any statistics, cause he never played a game. But technically his only NHL stat is 5 minute major.
I'm surprised that you didn't also mention Kellan Lain while showing the Vancouver versus Calgary line brawl. That was his first game and he set the record for the quickest fight in an NHL career as he had his first fight in only 2 seconds of ice-time.
I remember Trevor gillies in the AHL. Bench clearing brawls almost every night. There were even several times where both teams would be in a total 30 man brawl during warm ups before the game even started. It was very fun to watch. Portland pirates was the team
Peak Canucks vs Flames was the playoff series in the 90's that saw Vancouver go to the SC finals for the first time. That was nuts. A number of players were not just hitting to hurt. They were hitting to end careers.
C"mon, don't forget Guy Charron. I guess most fans are too young to remember, but I saw him play. He was a very good player in the 70's. Played over 700 NHL games and never got into the playoffs. Not one playoff game. That shows what happened if you played in the 70's mostly for Detroit & Washington. Sad thing is he originally came up with Montreal, and if he hadn't been traded and had spent the same career with the Canadiens as he played in the NHL, he would have won 6 Stanley Cups. Jay Bouwmeester also played about 10 years in the league before finally getting into the playoffs, but like Ron Hainsey, eventually got to win a Stanley Cup.
I think +/- is useful for looking for defensemen. You can look at the line that defender plays on and see how many goals that line has scored. If that player has a good plus minus as a defender, it likely means they are good at keeping the puck out of their goalie's net, meaning they might be a good defender. If they have a bad plus minus, they might not be great.
That depends. If you’re the best defensive defenseman, you’re likely to get matched more against the top offensive scorers, this will skew your +/- to a lower figure.
How can you be excited about more fighting? Now that we know how prevalent and devastating CTE is, it disgusts me that we cheer on these guys who are literally taking years off of their life every time they fight. Derek Boogaard's legacy apparently means nothing.
I still remember that Ducks/Devils game. That was a crazy game and dyk two of those devils own goals were also two former Ducks players Noesen and Lovejoy which made it more of a twilight zone lol
fighting likely went up cause teams were seeing each other 9 times in their respective divisions. i love fighting but i think the numbers might drop a bit next season. but one can hope that the bad blood from last season will carry over
Correct- it's only illegal to score in your opponents net with a stick above the crossbar. However, if the puck had been above his shoulder and he played it, it would have been high sticking, and disallowed. It's a fine line sometimes.
You should do a video on players who won the cup before they played a regular season game. Are there any who won the cup without ever playing in the regular season?
Doug Mohns record stands out in his last season in 1974-75 which he played. He was a -54 in 75 games while serving as a captain for the Washington Capitals.
Rob, I’m wondering if for your next video like this you can do some research on the 2021 Winnipeg Jets and their 8 game playoff stint (win 4-0 sweep and then lose 0-4 sweep) and see how common it is? I can’t remember any other time that happened
I certainly get the argument regarding the value of plus/minus, but this humiliating record is worth mentioning. The 1974-75 Washington Capitals had 13 players who finished at -40 or worse, including Defenseman Bill Mikkelson who was a stunning -82 in just 59 games. Mikkelson was also a pathetic -146 in 146 career games until he was called up by the Caps in 1977 to play his first NHL game in over 2 years. In that match, which would be the last of his career, Bill was even to finish his NHL days a sliver under his -1 per game ratio at -146 in 147 games.
How did you leave out Kellan Lain?!? Fastest fight/ejection to start an NHL career, and it was the same game that Torts stormed the Flames dressing room! In fact, the only reason Bieksa was taking that draw was because he saw Lain lined up against Westgarth, knew what was about to go down, and switched places with him so that he didn't have to start his NHL career with a fight. Unfortunately it immediately turned into a line brawl anyway, and Lain was ejected just 0:02 into his first game. His parents flew out from Ontario to watch his debut, and he was ejected off the opening face-off. Absolutely brutal.
I remember when Jokinen missed the net on the shootout that could've sent the Rangers to the playoffs. Philly won the game and clinched the playoffs and ultimately went to the finals that year haha
i was at the canucks line brawl game versus the flames it was legendary. my parents took a friend along with us who hadn’t ever been to a hockey game before he was absolutely amazed lmao. then torts lost his shit and the game was delayed for like 15 minutes i’ll never forget that day
There was another record in that Canucks-Flames line brawl, Kellen Lain played the shortest first NHL game ever, getting ejected after two seconds of gameplay
The 2011 Leafs were absolutely horrendous. This was pre-Phil the Thrill IIRC. To lose against them that bad is BRUTALLY and CATASTROPHICALLY horrendous.
I think the reason there was more fights was because only the local teams would play each other 8 times over, back to back too. That got the teams pissed.
Gillies was also known to be un-necessarily violent during play, he slammed an opponents head into the glass while standing next to them grinding for the puck, a couple years ago.
Here's an interesting statistic about Trevor Gillies. He played in 57 NHL games and 322 ECHL games. He scored twice as many NHL goals as he did ECHL goals.
The devils scoring on themselves is the best part of this video lol. Plz make just a compilation of the devils scoring on themselves. I mean c'mon, they must have scored 50or more in the last 3 years or so.
I would argue +/- is even more valuable today given the low scoring totals of even the best players in the league. It gives a macro into who is a liability on the ice and who pays both ends.
The thrashers didn't go out on a totally bad note. You know who scored the last ever goal as an Atlanta Thrasher before they moved to Winnipeg, right???? That would be our boy Tim Stapleton!!
The better record for Hainsey was he played that many games and seasons without losing a playoff series (as of winning the cup). That absolutely has to be a record.

Yea but that's not an embarrassing stat. He didn't get knocked out or anything stupid.
Additionally, had Bieksa not gone up to take the draw, to "save the rookie", Lain wouldn't have been tossed from the game.
